Let me please start out by saying Im easy to please, but hard to impress.
Visiting from New York, I had dinner here with a friend this past weekend. She told me this place was amazing, so my expectations were a bit high.
Maybe too high.
We decided to split a salad, a pasta, and a pizza, and went very basic.
Just had the basic green salad....a light pasta, and the margherita pizza.
Salad was ok...nothing special, but I highly doubt folks come here for the salads, based on other reviews.
The Pasta was excellent. In fact if we had stopped there, I believe this place would have deserved 3.5 stars. Fresh...delicate...simple, but delicious half-moon pastas prepared in a fresh, yellow, tomato sauce. I can still see them and taste them, days later, and thats the sign of a deft hand in the kitchen.
The pizza?????? Folks, if this is what rates as one of the best pizzas in Toronto, y'all need to spread out some and try a visit down south to the US of A.
Only one size? Thats fine. No points off there, but the pricing for one this size is a bit pricey and absurd for ANY quality eatery.
Thin crust? Ahhh my, you had me at "thin". But the problem here is this: the outer edges of the crust were just the right level of crisp....the middle though? Soggy, runny, boredom. Im sorry if that runs contrary to everyone elses opinions here, but a flappy, soggy, thin crust just doesnt do it for me, regardless of the thin-ness. I can think of dozens of places that do it far better, at half the price, here in the Metro area of NY.
Flavor? Here is where Terroni simply baffles me. How can a place do a pasta that blows me away one minute, deliver a boring pizza without character or flavor the next? I cant fault the ingredients. Everything looked fresh and first rate. But blah and boring are adjectives that fit nicely. I was UNDERwhelmed if thats a word! I asked for some grated cheese to add to the pizza to "give it a bit of flavor". Server simply said, "no". We dont allow anything to be put on the pizza.
OK.
Look, I get the "chef-doesnt-want-his-or-her-masterpiece-to-be-compromised" concept, I do. If you spend years perfecting a recipe, the thought of someone tampering with it might get a bit nervy. But pizza??????? My dearest Canadian friends: PIZZA??? Pizza. Folks, pizza was made to be topped with whatever the hell a person could want.....from (God save us!) pineapple to pepperoni. And if a person should, Heaven-forbid, want something as basic as a small bit of grated cheese on their 'za???? Ummm...yeah. Spare me the high-and-mighty attitude until youre officially a 5 star, zagat-rated, world-class pizzeria, which, unfortunately, youre not.
So....sorry for the rant....I tried to be fair and hopefully sincere to a fault. Terronis' had moments of pleasure (the pasta), but sure as hell didnt impress me at all. read more
