This Tentatsu location is good place to go. It well decorated and the ambiance is cool. Their menu has so many options and it was hard to decide what to order. Their service was ok. Their food it was a little bit hard to eat, and the tuna was not fresh. But the rest of the rolls were good. I do like their tempura. It was good. Other than that, I hope you will have better experience! read more

Overall, good price, offers a variety of selections, quick service and ok food. Not extremely impressive but average. Chicken Karaage was a disappointment. It lacks flavour - could use some marinade. Rolls are good but not competitive amongst Japanese restaurants at this price point. No WOW factor for me. read more

This location has been around for 3 decades and has recently changed ownership. It now looks to be Korean owned instead of Chinese. They have renovated the restaurant and it is a lot brighter than before. All the servers have changed with the new management. They have kept what was part of the old Tentasu menu and added new items. Prices have gone up and portions are smaller than before, but that is to be expected with current food inflation. They still have decent lunch specials before 3pm. Food tasted average. Service was friendly and attentive. They accept credit card for payment. Metered parking is available on Hastings or can be found in the side streets. read more

I love that Tentatsu has gluten free soy sauce. Their staff are really great at checking to let you know what has gluten in it and whether or not an ingredient can be removed to make something GF. The staff were super friendly and very accommodating. The sushi was really fresh and we had a great time visting Tentatsu. read more

Nice unagi, service was a bit slow, but we were there on a Friday evening. Good drink specials which included a skewer snack. Cushions on the bench seating slid around a bit and weren't overly comfortable. A bit lacking in ambiance but the food was tasty, so that's fine. read more

The place is a total gong show when it gets busy. No proper method of handling waiting customers. They hand out small little bits of paper with a number on it, but you have no idea when your number is up. So you have no option but to continually ask them. They generally say a 30 minute wait, which doesn't mean much. It is just something for them to say. The solution to this problem is simple, but they don't seem to care about it much. Leave or stay, doesn't matter to them. read more

My 2nd time here, under new ownership, the renovated interior/signage gave a cleanliness and brighter vibe. Food was amazing, fresh, VERY affordable and service was top notch. We all left super satisfied. There's not much parking space available but it was pretty easy to find street parking. Will definitely be back to try more things on the menu! read more

I've dined in over the years and realized I haven't reviewed yet. There are a lot of sushi restaurants in my neighbourhood and it's hard to choose. However this one comes in high on the list because it's always so flavorful and they have fairly large portions. I ordered in using the Skip the Dishes app - even though this restaurant handles its own deliveries. After I ordered they called me to clarify an item, I liked that they were proactive about it. The driver showed up on time. And it totally made my night. We had Bento box A&B, plus Ika Karaage all for $29. I had Bento B - Salad, Tempura, House Roll, Salmon, Tuna, Ebi Sushi, Cal. Roll & Fruit, comes with Miso soup and Sunomono. Yes they serve Bento box lunch after 4pm. Free delivery over $25 after 4pm during Covid. Loved having a nice sized, tasty sushi dinner delivered to my home. read more

Long Time Customer, Utterly Disappointed (and you might be too going forward) I have been a delivery customer of Tentatsu Sushi (Hastings & Nanaimo) for about 15 years. Over those years I have ordered anywhere between $45 and $90 worth of food per delivery. For a long time, I ordered about once per week and over the last couple of years, an average of once a month. I tip well - a minimum of $8 per delivery, more recently a minimum of $10 per delivery. Tonight, I ordered about $66 worth of food (2 miso soup, sunamono, small sashimi, sushi roll, agadashi, and gyoza). The doorbell chimed and when I opened the door the driver was holding up a soaked through, empty, and broken paper bag with containers beneath all askew. He hurriedly tried to find out what could be salvaged. I thought if it was one container I could overlook it, but it quickly became clear that even without the miso or sunamono (which obviously leaked) the rest of the containers were on their side with their contents smashed. Even the driver looked like it was hopeless. I told him I wanted a replacement order. I called Tentatsu and explained the situation. They said they would put a new order together. Another hour wait and the doorbell chimed again. Figuring that all would be well, I told the driver to give himself a $10 tip but then realized there was spillage again. An additional bag was soddened and a quick inspection of the other bag revealed sunamono without liquid and other potential issues. For 15 years, until tonight (for me), Tentatsu carefully layered everything in a paper bag with cardboard between each layer to ensure the stability of the food. The driver mentioned that they weren't using cardboard anymore, hence the instability and spillage. I was a little surprised. Nonetheless, I didn't want to be too ungrateful, so I asked how much it was and pulled out my credit card to pay. The driver had no idea. I offered $50 for the food. He called Tentatsu, and while waiting, I was getting a little miffed that the miso was getting cold (and quite frankly, after 2 hours, I was hungry). He was told $66 by Tentatsu. Again, I offered $50 given all the grief. The driver handed me the phone. I explained that two mangled deliveries were not worth full price, but I was willing to pay $50. The person I spoke to passed me onto another person that I had to explain to and then ANOTHER person. The final person told me they wouldn't leave the food with me for $50. I handed the food and phone back to the driver and that was that. I shut the door and heated up some canned chili! Tentatsu wasted about $130 worth of food and lost a regular customer of 15 years. And for what? No, I didn't want to scam them, but I felt my offering was fair for a partial order and all the hassle. Clearly, Tentatsu are not interested in providing complete meals by delivery any longer, nor do they care about losing customers. I guess business is THAT good for them. So, if you receive delivery from Tentatsu, be aware that they don't use cardboard between layers of food any longer, which may be a problem - depending on your order. Now to find a new sushi place that delivers... read more

This is a hard review to leave. I can't help but only give a 1-star rating this time. I came for an early dinner with my daughter. I ordered Sashimi and she ordered a salmon roll and the Fire Roll. My Sashimi was delicious and well plated, but we had major issues my daughter's Fire roll. First ... it took 55 minutes to arrive. I know my timing was correct because I was keeping an eye on the clock due to my parking limit. Second ... after taking two pieces ... we found a piece of paper stuck to the plate hiding under the roll. We sent it back and they said they'll replace it. It took another 10 minutes. The second roll seemed fine, My daughter ate half and asked for a box to pack the rest. She found a human hair in the remaining half of the Fire roll she had just packed up. That was the final straw. We insisted that we not have to pay for the roll, so they took it off the bill. The salmon roll she ordered was plated HORRIBLY. It looked like it was cut in a huge rush. Not evenly cut, it looked unsavoury. You can see the kitchen from the seating area and not one of the five chefs back there were wearing hair nets. Isn't this a Fraser Health Violation?? So I'm giving a 1-star rating. Due to the circumstances, I think I'm being generous. We will not return to this restaurant. read more

I came here because my best friend has been coming here for 6+ years and has sworn by their delicious sushi. I have to say... I was impressed. To be fully honest, I'm not sure why their ratings are so low. I think Vancouver is spoiled with fantastic sushi and as a result has turned us into sushi snobs, so we judge these restaurants a little harder. Hey, I can say this, because I'm one of those sushi snobs. Anyways, I've come in for both lunch and dinner and had great experiences both times. They don't take reservations, so I'd suggest coming in early to beat the lunch/dinner rush, because there will be a rush and it will be busy. Trust me. For lunch I decided to get a bento box, their fire roll and a miso soup. I paid $18 for all of this and the portions were GEN-ER-OUS. I had to take home half my box and roll - there was just so much food. Their lunch specials are such a great deal, I'm not sure why more people haven't taken advantage of this. As for dinner, their boxes are a bit more expensive, but I didn't get a box that time around. Quality wise, I think this sushi is pretty damn good. The rolls are huge and the fillings are fresh and tasty. Plus you can take some home with you if you can't finish it all. If you like good quality sushi for a decent price, visit Tentatsu. This sushi snob was impressed. read more

Like a couple of others, I have been a regular customer for years (I have a lot of their chopstick packages to prove it). Lately, we keep missing minor side items with combos, to the point that it is time to find another place. It's too bad because I really liked this place. During the big C, I would do pickup and leave a decent tip, happy to support a local business. I hope management reads the comments here and smartens up. read more

we ordered pick up and it was an absolute disappointment. The tempura was cold, greasy and the vegetables were cut so thin. We ordered a dinner combo that indicates a sunomono included. It was not. As J N. said, the reviews seem to be hit and miss here. Only 1 way to find out. Parking is available on the streets, such as Hastings. The staff were obviously not Japanese (they were yelling at each other in Cantonese), but this is Vancouver for ya. The interior is the 1990s Japanese style, with lots of wood. The sushi is decent here, but it's definitely pricey for what you get. Our deluxe combo ($14) consisted of 6 pieces of nigiri, and 8 other pieces. In other words, $1 a piece. Yikes. The saba shioyaki was also decent, with nice crispy skin and well cooked meat. Again, $4 is pretty pricey for a piece that's maybe the size of 2 credit cards. I would agree with the general consensus that this restaurant is 3.5 stars. Food is decent, but unfortunately it's too rich for my blood. read more

always an old reliable for me when in the hastings/nanaimo area. their daily lunch special is very hard to beat. best value for money and generous portions. on my latest visit, notcied they hiked the prices and took away a small side dish. still, compared to most japanese places, still affordable and has best value. bento boxes were huge and filled with lots of food. anyhow, ordered beef teriyaki and a tempura cone combo. another beef teriyaki and a California roll combo. added a mango roll and of course, salmon sashimi. beef teriyaki was average. beef was boil then sauce poured over, instead of grilled/fried teppan style. tempura cone was packed with veggies and a tempura in the center. the cali roll was 8pcs per order. when they say combo, the do give you the full serving. rice and crab very tender and dish tasted really fresh. in fact, i saw the chefs roll it as customers order. nice touch of freshness for sure. the mango roll was amazing too. its basicslly a cali roll with a slice on mango in the middle then topped with ebi shrimp and then mango sauce was the garnish. a bit on the sweeter side but i dont mind. wife and i enjoyed it. salmon sashimi was by far the top dish this lunch time.huge and well marbled salmon pieces came with a large order ( 9 pcs) . succulent and tender. fish was fresh as no after taste or fishy smell. standards of cleanliness was there as well. miso soup that came with the combo was so so...a bit below average but you get a huge bowl. lol! overall, i still would repeat when in the area. cheers! happy eating! read more

We ordered takeout for the first time earlier this week. The rolls are generous in size! It's definitely an econo-sushi place that uses lots of rice because the rolls are gigantic. I thought it tasted good but tbh I ordered two rolls and could only get through one! We tried out the agedashi tofu which was great and the chicken teriyaki which was also a huge portion. I also ordered a salmon nigiri which was really great. The sushi was good but wasn't high end, if that makes sense. It's a lot of bang for your buck which is awesome if you're ordering for a family or group of people. We will order from them again! Also, based on walking by this location, it's always packed! It's a busy restaurant that gets lots of foot traffic from the residents in the neighbourhood. They seem to be doing something right to attract continuous customers! read more

They used to be great but now their PRICES went up a lot and so did the WAIT TIME, I waited for 45 mins for take-out in which originally was told 25-30. It seems that they're not handling the orders in a proper sequence as people that ordered in larger quantities got their food first. It seems that they don't care about the business anymore, unless you order their food for a big party. Their Burnaby branch is not great at all, the food portions are much smaller and not tasty, we tried for a few times but every time it's disappointing. One more tip: DO NOT order Toro, as many times when they run out of Toro, they just replace them with cheaper Tuna without letting you know and charge for same prices. read more

Yay finally a place with decent fresh sushi, not too expensive and come in good portions. The sushi and bento box were massive! I like that sprouts were served under the teriyaki chicken. The salad had just enough dressing it wasn't too salty or sweet. We got a booth. Very comfortable. The couple beside us wasn't so lucky as space was limited with the waitresses walking up and down the isle. Service was on the slow side but got tea refills when cheque came. Good for takeouts too. Make sure you check that they give you chopsticks. Otherwise, you may need to use your fingers. Will come again read more

4 stars this time! Service so much faster. Ordered the 3-item "lunch eye opener" $11.95...salmon teriyaki, beef udon & rolls/nigiri. So much food. The teriyakis came with bean sprouts underneath the protein, would've been a little better w/ some rice. The udon tasted just right w/ some nanami togarashi shaken in (chili peppers) of course. The sushi was good too, fairly big portions. Since my first visit, which was only 1-1/2 weeks ago, the servers & chefs seemed to be quicker. I'm so impressed by this 180, I think I'll be a regular. read more

Tentatsu is another Chinese owned Japanese restaurant in Vancouver. I usually only give 3 stars for restaurants like this, but let me explain why Tentatsu gets an extra star from me. With Chinese owned Japanese restaurants, it's usually quantity over quality. That being said, even though the sushi here is ginormous, the quality is actually excellent! The fish is always firm and fresh, and the rice is well seasoned. Maybe next time, I'll just ask the chef to go easy on the rice, but at this price point, I really can't complain about Tentatsu. read more

Friday night takeout. Called in order at 7pm. Told it would be 40 mins. Arrived at 7:40. Paid right away. Told it'd be another minute. Pretty chaotic front entrance. Told twice more "one more minute" Customer service didn't appear to be high on their priority. Order ready just after 8. Tempura in Nagano combo was deep fried in oil that was far beyond useful life. Salmon Oshi sushi was disappointing. There was no sear. Way too much rice and not pressed very well. Dynamite roll was good. California roll had too much rice. Teriyaki chicken was ok. read more

Lunch Noodle Combo B: Chicken Udon, House Roll, Salmon Sushi, Tuna Sushi, Salad & Fruit Review: The sushi here is well made and of good quality. I think this made their house roll really well and their cuts of fish was pretty fresh. The price is really affordable for lunch and they give you a lot of food. However, their noodle soups are not that tasty. I found their udon really soft and without a nice bite which I prefer. The pieces of chicken in the chicken udon was also "uglier" cuts of meat and the quality was not really up there. The broth was mediocre. This may not be that important for others but the miso soup they make here is actually really good. I often go to other places that overlook their miso soup and they serve watery cold gross miso soup. Their sunomono is also made well. This shows that this restaurant pays attention to details and that's really good!! I would recommend people to come here but just for the sushi! Rating: 7.5/10 read more

Cheap food. Terrible service. What more can you ask for? Oh right, worst fake Japanese food in Vancouver. I've never really had terrible service at a restaurant in a long time and by servers who were out right rude, not just serving our table either. All the servers just know how to drop off food and when you say 'thank you' they NEVER respond with a 'you're welcome' if you want to have an awful dinner then I would recommend this terrible restaurant. Also when you order something and they don't have it don't expect them to tell you until the END OF YOUR MEAL. Also don't expect a refill of tea or a friendly greeting or farewell. DO EXPECT CHEAP FOOD AND TERRIBLE SERVICE. If you must dine here - order takeout. But again do expect cheap food and terrible service. #neveragain read more

I wish I can say that this place is getting better. I used t enjoy going here because it's decently priced with good amount of servings and better than average quality. The past few times I've returned, the serving size is still good but the food quality has gone down. I know I can't expect much from this level of pricing, but the location of the restaurant should help pour this savings back into the food. The servers have their moods. Sometimes they treat you great. Other times if your food hasn't arrived yet then they will make you move tables to try and maximise the seating arrangement of the restaurant instead of making the newly arrived patrons wait for the next table to vacate. This is not Tojo's, but I think basic customer service skills for any level of restaurant is a given. Well, in this restaurant sometimes it's there and sometimes it's not. It's a hit and miss, really. Which is why I guess it's time to move on to find a new cheap eats to go to. read more

While it makes me very sad to have to give my once most favourite sushi place ever a bad follow up review, it must be done because this place has gone quite downhill over the last few years. I used to dine in/ order delivery from Tentatsu religiously, at LEAST once a week. I then moved out to the burbs and no longer was able to visit what I thought was the best sushi joint in Vancouver. In the last month I have gone into the restaurant and experienced horrible service from a rude waitress and ended up getting food poisoning from the meal. Last weekend I thought I'd give them a second chance so a friend and I ordered delivery. Guess what? I got food poisoning AGAIN. I've noticed the quality of the food is very mediocre now too; half frozen sashimi makes me sad. Sorry Tentatsu, it's over. Have a nice life. read more

This is by definition the best place to get the sushi where size matters. If Hungry-Man ever produced sushi dinners, Tentatsu would definitely be the perfect example when it comes to quantity. I was here having dinner with my family along with my aunt and uncle. They wanted to treat us out and I basically had to eat what the parents ordered. So we ordered the Love Boat, Tuna and Salmon Sashimi (18 pieces), and Favourite Combo. Here comes the verdict. The tuna and salmon sashimi was not the best and not the worst. I could tell because when I use my chopsticks, the pieces were being cut away by the wooden chopsticks. It would still firm enough that I can grip it to eat it. It tasted fresh along with the tuna. However, I liked the salmon more because I could taste the freshness of the fish. After having like 4 pieces of each, I was off to the next dish which was the Love Boat. The Love Boat had a variety of nigiri sushi, sushi rolls and the sushi with seaweed. For instance, it had 1 piece of chopped scallop roll, 1 piece fish roe, 2 pieces of tuna and salmon nigiri, a California roll, 3 pieces of futomaki roll and a bunch of other seafood and sushi in there. They served it on a wooden boat which was a nice touch to the meal. I tend to have a very large mouth opening, but it was so difficult to eat it in 1 bite that I have to eat it in 2 bites. There was so much rice in there, I could definitely replace the rice from the piece of nigiri sushi to a bowl and I would have enough rice to eat for the entire day. The favourite combo was basically 1 California roll, BC Roll and Dynamite Roll. It was a good size and the taste was very good. The teriyaki sauce on the BC Roll was okay. It came in 8 pieces along with 8 pieces California roll and 5 piece of dynamite roll. Like I said, the size was huge and some pieces I could barely get the whole piece in 1 mouth. One thing I like about this restaurant menu is that they have a variety of meals they can make. For instance they will serve udon, rice bowls bento boxes, okonomiyaki, sushi combos, boat combos, sushi and sashimi combos and much more. In terms of variety, I would say this is one of the top places to go to if you are looking for variety. They also have a lunch menu for less then $9-$10, you can basically pick 3-4 items and go out of the restaurant feeling very satisfied. They also serve beer and sake in their cooler. Not sure if they have wine though. Overall, I would recommend coming here if you are in the need to refill your sushi meter. It is meant for anyone for those who need to celebrate the night out or to have a quick lunch, this is Tentatsu. P.S I would not recommend reserving a table since sometimes they would prioritize the customers who come in first more then the ones who reserved the table. read more

I've been hearing a lot about Tentasu so husband and I went here to dine a few days ago. It looks like your typical Chinese ran sushi shop, but we were here for the deals. He already ate so he just got a roll that I forgot the name to, but it had imitation crab meat and cream cheese of some kind. I ordered tempura udon and the salmon aburi sushi, hoping that it would be as good as the one from Blowfish Sushi further up in the neighborhood. The rolls were really lacking, unfortunately. Rice was falling apart and I couldn't even taste any fish from the salmon aburi. The sauce tasted better than the sushi itself! A sacrifice in quality I should have expected I guess... I mean the rolls were damn cheap. The udon was amazing though. Tempura was fried to perfection and the udon broth didn't reek of MSG! I could get through the whole bowl without getting thirsty. Easily the best bowl of tempura udon ever, and it was again, pretty decently priced. Sad though how the highlight of the meal at a sushi shop was the noodles. Service was ok, nothing exceptional or noteworthy. Overall, 3/5 for everything. Pretty average except for the udon. read more

This is more the service than the food as I was thinking of giving this place a solid 3 star. My mom has been coming to this place recently, as the lunch meals are cheap..... like bang for your buck, massive boat load of food for the price where you can't finish it, and may have to take it home if your stomach is as small as mine kind of place. We get in there on the holiday Monday, and we were lucky to beat the holiday lunch crowd. We get one of their 'walled' off booths to the right side near the kitchen. The waitress hurried us in, and took her time to bring the menus where I noticed quite a few lunch combos that they offer. Just know that this is a Japanese restaurant run by Chinese people, as I heard the Cantonese being flung across the room and kitchen many times. I went with one of their lunch combos which made me pick 2 sides, and 2 mains for under $7, that is cheap, and I didn't realize how much food was going to hit the table. Ordered miso soup, rice as my sides, with beef teriyaki and corn croquette as my mains, my mother had a salad and rice, with salmon teriyaki and udon. There was enough food to feed another person with what I saw laid out on the table. The food was your typical budget Japanese food you would expect, nothing spectacular, but if your looking for a meal to fit the budget tight wallet that is looking flat in your butt pocket, or big hollow purse, then the meals and the deals here are for you. The drop off in my experience here was the service, or our waitress itself. We had to flag her down to take our order, I know she was busy, but here's the thing, the next table beside us orders their food 5 minutes after us, and somehow miraculously receives their food before us, let alone their sides like soup and salad, and we are not even acknowledged of this? We had to flag her down and ask where our sides were? OK, we ordered first, aren't we supposed to get our food before them? Forgetting our orders of our sides altogether and then asking us what we ordered for our sides. Our mains come, and our sides have not come yet, and also no utensils to eat the food with, what gives, as the table next to us has all of this??? This is not KFC, I need some sort of sharp object to at least stab at my food to shove into my eating hole, I cannot use my hands on some of this extra saucy stuff! The final wrong thing to do was to put our receipt and change on the next table after we paid for the bill, and I watched her throw it there, just a complete wow for the whole part in service, but I may have been here on a bad day, or when the world turned sideways? As I said, the food is alright, and hopefully the service for you is better what I had, but it wouldn't deter me from coming back if I needed a cheap fix of food. read more

I WILL NOT REST until Tentatsu is recognized as THE #1 hotspot for sushi, fish, and (most importantly) a fun and friendly family atmosphere for Vancouver fine dining and desserts. The service IS the best in the industry and I will NEVER be the same after the kindness the Tentatsu staff offered my son-in-law Gerry last weekend. Gerry is an emotional man and recently had to remove his prized collection of vintage pinball machines from his home after his cruel neighbour (Coyne) tried to have Gerry and his family evicted due to the "nonstop crashing and banging" that would unavoidably occur when Gerry played pinball at night. Gerry cheats at pinball (so he can have the high score) and it is probably best that he no longer has the machines in his home. That said, Gerry is heartbroken and if not for the Spicy Tuna Crunch roll at Tentatsu I fear Gerry may have had nothing left. Thank you Tentatsu for helping my family stay together as Gerry looks to fill the empty void left by the dozens of pinball machines he was forced to discard. read more
