Was definitely disappointed after doing some research seeing a lot of people online rave about this spot. i did not like the jumbo shrimp from here. And my veg were definitely a little undercooked. Nothing in the meal impressed me or made me want a second bite. I did not eat most of the shrimp which is disappointing for me. My tempura was a bit soggy.
You know that feeling of disappointment after having a mediocre meal? It sucks. Hannosuke is one of the many stalls in Mitsuwa Marketplace's food court. I ate here because it was the only one open... The other stalls close at 8pm. If I had known this, I would have come a lot earlier. The menu is simple and straightforward. They serve tendon (deep-fried tempura over steamed rice) and soba (Japanese buckwheat noodles) sets. I ordered the #26 Small Tendon and Soba Set ($14). It included soba noodles with broth, 2 shrimp tempura, seaweed, green vegetables, a soft-boiled egg, and white rice. After I ordered and paid, I was given a ticket number/receipt. They call out your order number on a PA system when it's ready. During peak hours it can be difficult to find seating at the food court. It gets crowded FAST, but employees try their best to keep it clean. Service was a bit slow, but I'm not going to complain because I assumed they were making the food fresh. Nope, the food wasn't exactly as fresh as I thought... The tempura was soggy and oily! I couldn't enjoy the shrimp or vegetables because of that. You expect tempura to be crispy, light, and flaky. Bleh. The steamed rice was cold. The egg wasn't even soft-boiled; it was more like a fried egg cooked well done or over medium. The soba was the saving grace for the meal. It was topped with nori (seaweed), green onion, and bonito flakes. The noodles had a nutty and earthy flavor from the buckwheat flour that they're made of. I enjoyed the slightly chewy texture. However, I wished I ordered it cold because I wasn't a fan of the soup broth. It was too salty for my taste. I'd skip this stall and order from the other ones. Granted, I did come near closing time, but restaurants should strive to maintain consistent food quality during all operating hours.
We spent the day in the surrounding area and decided to get some tempura to share. What a mistake. Rude service, long wait, and bad food. The trifecta. We ordered the original tendon set through the kiosk. We waited almost 40 minutes. A guy called my order number and another persons order. I can see both orders with our numbers on it at the kitchen window. I went up to the counter and showed my order ticket. A different worker with massive amounts of attitude looks at me and says your food isn't ready, why are you here? I said her coworker called my order number. She says uh huh, you have to wait okay? Go wait over there. I decided not to move. She's gives me stink eye and reads out the two order numbers. I tell her that's my order. She looked so displeased and asked for my ticket to check the number. She then begrudgingly hands me the tray of food. I guess they ran out of clean bowls because they served everything on a paper plate. Everything was cold. Except for the fish and soup. It took them 40 mins to serve cold tempura. What happened?? Rice was cold, parts of it were uncooked. Zoom in and you can see it in the picture. Soup was okay. Egg was cold. The cold tempura had batter that was mid and had little to no seasoning. Not so fresh veggies used. Do yourself a favor and eat anywhere else but here.
Every time I'm in Mitsuwa, I automatically head to Hokkaido Ramen Santouka. Unfortunately over the weekend, I arrived just after they closed at 8:00pm, leaving me with only one option in the food court for dinner - Hannosuke. After decades, this shop is still banging out bowls and bowls of tendon and soba. With that said, I was never a big fan of their offerings. On this night, the tempura was a bit soggy and not crispy enough, while the hot soba was overcooked where the noodles lost its chew. Was it serviceable? Sure. Do I want it again, not really. I will not miss the 8:00pm deadline again.
Get the hot Kakiage Soba, soup with fried shrimp fritters. The broth was delicious but a bit salty which I expected. Eat the shrimp fritters fast before they soak up the broth. Kids shared the shrimp tendon set. Comes with 4 shrimp tempura, veggies, over a bowl of rice, includes a miso soup. Plenty of food for 2 kids.
Decided to check out a different place other than our other usual spots. Ordering was a little challenging as you are directed to a kiosk. Picking our items was easy but trying to pay for it was the challenging part. We finally figured out to flip our card upside down for the chip recognition. Which was odd, but we were thankful it finally registered. Foor took a little whike, but that's too be expected as they were making to order. Tempura was good, although I don't understand why they give you one large piece of tempura broccoli as it is so hard to eat and barely fit into the soup-sauce bowl. Miso soup was good and you get a good portion of rice. All said, it was a nice lunch we had.
This is my favorite stall at the food court because I love soba and I love tempura. I don't order the more popular tendon sets (which looks like a lot of food), but I am always very happy with the soba and tempura at Hannosuke.
What happened to the fresh vibrantly crispy tempura shrimp i used to love??? I come here every week and i just came back from a 1 month vacation and visited this spot again, and WOW its NOT the same. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE bring us back the ORIGINAL recipe and quality of the Tempura
Japanese tempura place at Mituwa, Edgewater, NJ I had a early lunch on Wednesday. There were already several people lined up for the place to open. I had #11 original plate set tempura. The white fish tasted good but shrimp, broccoli, pumpkin and nori was soggy and greasy. The side pickles didn't taste too good and the rice was bad quality and slightly undercooked. The plate coasted me $15.97. It seems the tempura is getting worst everytime I come. What a disappointment.
This place is consistently good but on a recent visit, it was exceptional! The food was crispier, I got a little more sauce drizzled on, and it really took me back to eating the real deal Hannosuke in Japan! We usually get the #2 and #6, the non-set versions without the soup. The shrimp and the vegetables are so delicious and the sauce is very tasty. I would def recommend coming here. In my experience, when it's less busy/no line, my food came out crispier and tastier. They also have online ordering now so that can be convenient!
Located inside Mitsuwa, Hannosuke offers perfectly fried and battered tempuras! On our recent visit, I got the shrimp with an add-on chicken tempura and soft boiled egg. The batter was nicely fried and had great taste that complimented and coated that shrimp and chicken well. Meat was also tender and not overcooked. I love the little drizzle of sauce that was enough to give extra flavor but not make the proteins and rice soggy. I dont think I noticed they had takoyaki before and so we got those too. It was surprisingly good and was the perfect appetizer. Ok portions of octopus meat. I also tried the cold soba. It was nicely done, chewy and fresh. Well there is not really much flavor on soba so thats where the dipping sauce came in handy. Still not much flavor lol but I think i just wanted the experience and to get a nice chew on some noodles. It was still an enjoyable meal. This is just me though but I dont easily get full with two shrimp tempuras thus the add-ons but if youre into a light fried meal then this would be an option from all the other food offered within Mitsuwa.
I'm happy I dodged a bullet the first time I went to Mitsuwa Marketplace and didn't get anything because I wasn't attracted to any of the foods. Coming this time around, I did not miss out on anything. This stall was packed, and the menu did look promising with all the endless tempura, soba, and rice options. The cashier was unhelpful to say the least. She got me googling what everything was instead, because it seemed she just didn't feel like answering questions that day. I got the Unagi Ebi Tendon ($16.98), and with no description next to it, I had no idea what it was, aside from having eel. Thanks to Google, I learned that don, in Japanese, is actually bowl, so their "don" dishes are actually rice bowls! Tendon is a tempura rice bowl. The tempura here is different from usual. They were soggier and saucier, which abides more to a modern palette, but I would have preferred my tempura crispy. Now, it tasted no different from the mushy soy sauced rice. The eel was flavorful, and the fried seaweed tempura was fun to eat at least. But everything in this bowl was very one dimensional tasting. The food looked better than it tasted, and was expensive for what it was. If this is one of the most popular spots here, I think I will just pass on every meal in this food court.

Not sure why there was such a line on the weekend but if you want to try the worst tempura ever come here. They must have not replaced the oil in three days because the tempura was dark, overcooked, and the shrimp tempura was like Hugh Hefner without Viagra: soggy and limp. read more

Tempura bowl heaven! So love the different tempura on top of a rice bowl with a dripping egg and sauce! Location: it is located inside Mitsuwa market, it is a food court style, so you have to order, then they will call you and you will look for your seat. It could get crowded during the peak hours and weekend. Service: Nice and fast service! Again, you have to order, they will give you a number then they will call you when your awesome ramen is ready. Price is very affordable and reasonable! Food: You have different choices of any tempura you like. I usually order the original tendon. It comes with white fish, 2 shrimps, nori, vegetables and half cooked boiled egg on top of a rice with soy sauce. The tempuras are just amazing, crispy and very tasty! The egg is the star here because it is half cooked so when you slice it, the egg yolk drips on the rice which gives it silky flavor. BTW CASH only! but there is chase ATM. Highly recommended if you want a really good tempura! Very affordable and taste so good! read more

Hello,Norma…
One of the food vendors at Mitsuwa Marketplace. This is certainly one of those places where the picture menu looks so much better than reality! We had to wait until 11am for them to open on a Saturday. One of the first 5 or so people in line. Ordered the shrimp tempura. Served over rice with a piece of broccoli, pumpkin and seaweed tempura. Also had a fried soft egg. Tempura wasn't a light golden color as expected. It was also soggy. Either old oil or not hot enough. It also didn't help that instead of serving sauce on the side, they pour it on top of the tempura which is supposed to be light, airy and crispy. I got the feeling that they don't care about quality cause there's so many people flooding into Mitsuwa Marketplace and they all need to eat. Thank goodness we only ordered one serving to share cause this was a total letdown. read more

It is good. Almost like the original one in Nihon bashi section of Tokyo. I use to go to that one when we lived in Tokyo. So was glad to have found this one. The cold noodles (soba) and tempura special is great. The tempura is light and non-greasy. They give you 3 shrimp and two veggies along with the cold noodles. For $1 more I got a bowl of miso soup. It was just like a meal from Tokyo at about twice the price of Tokyo. But this is really a good place. I liked it. read more

It's fast food tempura stall and I was curious because it had a long line inside a Mitsuwa Japanese market. If you are very hungry (I was) you would think it's the best tempura you have tasted outside Japan. The second time I was not so hungry and the food tasted just okay. Since it is one of the food stalls inside an Asian Market, the seating is communal and very crowded at the food court. The staff at Hannosuke were not pleasant and do not look happy working there. It is reflected on the food. read more
FRIED TEMPURA SOFT BOILED EGG?!?!?! HOW??? How do they do that?! No, seriously. How do you make a soft boiled egg... and then deep fry it with panko... and it's still perfectly runny inside and crispy on the outside... AMAZING. #3 consisted of random tempura and miso soup. You can also add a big shrimp like we did. I would probably add a few more eggs next time... read more
This place is accepting credit card now. The line was long but it was the same for all the other food stalls. On the menu, it said I can substitute the Shishito pepper with something else, went I ask the cashier, she said I can only substitute it if there was something on the menu with the same price which there wasn't. I wasn't offer any other option of substituting, so they should not have put that on the menu. I ordered the chicken tempera plate. The tempera was very crispy and not oily. The sauce for the tempera was delicious. The soft boiled egg on the rice was cooked perfectly. read more
We already tried before, but we wanted to try something different from them again. This time, we ordered Original Tempura Plate and Small Tendon and Soba. The Original Tempura Plate comes with tempura assortment of white fish, two shrimps, soft boiled egg, nori, and vegetables. Small Tendon and Soba comes with small tempura bowl and cold soba. They were both good, comforting, tasty and satisfying. They are not the best tempura or soba, but at a grocery store food court, I would say they do a good job. They don't have that many different offerings, as they focus on Tempura Bowl more than anything. It is a great spot to get tempura bowl or set at an affordable price. read more
As I anxiously await my upcoming trip to Japan, I was thrilled to see a new food stand in Mitsuwa that I haven't tried before. Apparently, the restaurant "Kaneko Hannosuke" in Tokyo was nominated in 2012 for one of the top restaurants in Tokyo for Zagat. My friends decided to get their food at other food stands with shorter lines, while I patiently waited for my food here. I am so glad that I did since they all started eyeing my food when I returned to the table. I ordered the Edomae tendon: $13.98- which came with Anago (conger eel), 2 shrimp, kakiage, soft boiled egg, nori, shishito, which is served over a rice bowl and a side of miso soup. Let's be honest, fried food usually taste amazing! This place is no different. Since my meal included an egg and a vegetable, I'm going to pretend that it's somewhat healthy. The tempura was light and crispy. The batter seemed very fresh and the special sauce that they used was simply delicious. The rice could use a bit more sauce but I'm sure you can ask for more when you place your order. read more

This place is getting worse and worst every time I came here. Food portion was so small and flavor has been changed. Service was terrible. Cashier staff was so attitude. read more
Hands down the best tempura in the area. You're not only getting a great deal for your money, but the food is quite extraordinary and is presented so beautifully. It's everything you'd hope for in a hot Japanese meal. I love tempura (anything) and the fact that many of the dishes are almost all tempura is amazing! Ever since I tried the Edomae Tendon, I haven't turned back. It's become my favorite mainly because of the anago (basically eel). There's light sauce that gets to your rice and once you combine that with the tempura... it's a perfect trifecta in every bite. Just like any other spot in the Mitsuwa food court, it will take some time for your order to be ready but stay nearby because it's sometimes hard to hear through the PA system. read more

This is my go to place whenever I visit Mitsuwa. The wait could be pretty long as expected, its Mitsuwa.. but I love the various sets they offer, you can have the best of both worlds. I usually get the rice bowl and soba set because I love variety. The tempura is not necessarily the crunchiest, but it is very tasty. The rice is nicely seasoned, and goes very well with the tempura. The soba is very fresh, and refreshing with its dipping sauce. Highly recommend~ read more

I was very excited to know that Hannosuke opened their first US branch in side mitsuwa's food court. Having had their original tendon in Tokyo and loving it, I came with high expectations. I got their #1 edomae tendon, which included 2 shrimps, anago, soft boiled egg, kakiage (fritter of chopped squid), jalapeño pepper and crispy nori for $13.98. It also came with miso soup and a small serving of pickled ginger. The tendon needed more sauce drizzled on its rice, and the tempuras were not as crispy as the ones in Tokyo. The Tokyo restaurant allowed free refills of the pickled ginger whereas this store doesn't. All that aside, the tendon was still the best I've had in the USA so far. I especially loved the anago and crispy nori. The wait here (30mins) is also relatively short compared to the 2hour wait in Tokyo, outside, in the cold. Overall, I left feeling satisfied and glad that there's a good tendon place that's accessible. read more
Shrimp tempura plate was nice. The same thing can be given as shrimp tempura bowl. Only difference is in one case tempura is given in a separate place, in the other case tempura will be arranged on top of the rice bowl. Shrimp tempura and all the veggies are fried till crispy. On top of the rice, there is a soft boiled egg that is batter fried. Batter fried soft boiled egg tastes very good. read more

Our fish was not fully cooked. Been here multiple times and tempura is always really good. Not super crunchy but always very flavorful with the rice and the sauce. I would not recommend the takoyaki. read more

My family drives to Mitsuwa from Queens, NY to eat at the food court some weekends, and this is my favorite stand. Good amount to choose from but at the same time not overwhelming I usually order the shrimp tempura plate and it's some pretty bomb tempura! Not too much batter, good amount of crisp and flavor. The tempura always comes out hot, not warm, probably since the stand is so popular. It comes with a fried soft boiled egg and rice, which I've nevet had elsewhere and it was cooked perfectly (runny yolk!!) Highly recommend. read more
I've been on the hunt for good ten-don ever since the trip to Tokyo. The ten-don at Hannosuke is legit. For a measly $13 , you cannot beat the value. Hands down, a MUST EAT item when in Mitsuwa Marketplace. The Edomae Ten-don comes is served in a traditional bowl and overflowing with crispy tempura style seafood. It also includes a fried egg and vege patty. Its awesome because it has an appearance of abundance. The tempura is freshly fried and served immediately as any proper tempura should be. Its crispy and moist. However, I think they need to switch out the frying oil and use less batter. Regardless, this is awesome tempura. The rice under the tempura is delicious. Steaming hot, soft, and covered in a flavorful soy sauce. Goes perfect with that savory tempura. I will definitely be back to enjoy another bowl! read more
This is another lovely place at Edgewater. Love the tempura. I have tried most of the set options. I really like the original, chicken and shrimp tendon options. Edomae tendon is really is a huge portion, come hungry. I have a soft spot for their soft boiled egg. The set also comes with miso soup. One good thing is that they offer take-out. read more

My friend recommends "If you go to Mitsuwa, try HANNOSUKE, anago tempura". So I ordered Edomae tempura bowl,$14.98. I came on Monday afternoon, slow time so huge tempura bowl came in less than 10 minutes. It worth it. Out side was crunchy, inside was juicy. They used good ingredients, sauce was much with tempura. There are a lot of eating place at Mitsuwa food court but I recommends you to try HANNOSUKE. read more
Take out only when we went on 7.28.20. Thats all fine. I ordered just the assorted tempora ate, my friend ordered the whole platter set for #1. The friedness of it made it so good! First time I ordered it since I always saw huge lines on weekends before covid. Most of the tempora plates comes with fried broccoli, seaweed, shrimp, and the item platter you order. read more
Located inside of the Japanese grocery store, Mitsuwa, Hannosuke seems to be on of the food vendors that are specialized in tempura. A popular chain located around the world, it's one of the places I haven't tried the numerous times I've been to Mitsuwa. To be honest, I believe that this place would taste much better in Japan, or other Asian continents because there would probably be more cooks skilled in this type of cuisine. It tasted just like any other tempura that I could get from a generic Japanese restaurant that was owned by a Chinese person. Although the egg over the rice was pretty good, the rice itself tasted a bit hard. Not much to say but if you wanted some regular tempura at Mitsuwa, this would be your place to go. read more

I come here almost every time I come to Mitsuwa - usually come here or the ramen place (Santouka). It's right next to Matcha Love, the soft serve ice cream place. This is my favorite tempura place in NYC/NJ area. Tempura in America is definitely not as good as Japan. However, this place came from Japan so they have the technique down right. The tempura comes out crispy and not greasy. The vegetables are cooked - not under or over cooked. My favorite ten don sets are the #1 (edomae - eel) and #4 (chicken). They come with vegetable and shrimp tempura, nori (seaweed) tempura, and a soft boiled egg on top of rice. Also, there's miso soup and pickled ginger on the side as well. It's a good deal for $9.98 (+ tax). It does take a while to get your order since they make it to order. Also, it's cash only so remember to have cash on hand. read more
The tempura is excellent. Let's start with that. The batter is perfect 1 light and crispy. Got the special with eel and everything was fried to perfection. There is always a wait for this food stall as there should be. Of course you shouldn't be eating fried food too much which means that his is a special treat. When you want to eat something fried it should be fried good and Hannosuke fries good. read more

Ordered an assorted tempura. Reasonably priced given the assortment and size. Very crispy, did not feel greasy and a lighter tempura than I've tried elsewhere. Nice way to share if trying things from other places in the food court. read more
The menu is small and straight forward with Tendon being the focus, what is Ten Don you may ask? Well basically it's Tempura Donburi or tempura over white rice, but this is no run of the mill tempura it's what all tempura strives to be. The most delicious blend of vegetables and proteins seasoned and lightly dredged in skillfully prepared tempura batter then delicately fried in hot sesame oil until the precise moment the outside crisps while the inside remains moist. In other words, cooked to perfection! Tendon Hannosuke's methods are unique and seize your senses. The outside of the tempura is crunchy, whether a slice of sweet potato or cluster of baby shrimp, the nutty roasted flavors of the sesame oil used for frying and the sweetness of the food really come through, true umami. No matter if it's large shrimp, chicken or the flaky slab of whitefish, this is a special Tendon. They also offer Anago (conger eel) and it's spectacular, the eel takes to this process well and the portion is quite generous albeit a few dollars extra. Notes You can add on items to your order from an à la carte listing if you'd like to supersize your rice bowl, I recommend another poached egg - This place can get very busy and since everything is cooked to order wait times become a test of patience - Place your order and ask "how long?" come back a few minutes earlier than quoted - Meals include a solid bowl of miso soup - For a little kick use the shichimi shaker and add some spicy heat. Umami In your bowl you will find a crunchy sheet of nori that's battered fried along with a bit of spicy pickled ginger to help refresh your palate. A gooey poached egg is given a quick dip in the oil, which crisps the surface without affecting its perfectly oozing yolk. At the bottom of the bowl is a brown sauce that brings the final card to the umami table, sweet. They have soba dishes as well, in the summer it will be served cold while during the winter months it's in a hot broth. Various tempura is available to top your noodles. From the website "Hannosuke Kaneko who served as a chairman of Japanese chef Association left a famous saying "TEN-DON (Tempura Bowl) is the very delicacy that represents Tokyo." He was also a person of influence for the Japanese Tempura Association and composed a recipe book containing his secret Tendon recipe. Hannosuke's grandson, Shinya Kaneko, inherited his grandfather's philosophy and flavor and revived his legacy in the center of Tokyo, Nihonbashi." "Additionally, the restaurant "Kaneko Hannosuke" has been nominated as one of the top Tokyo Restaurant in 2012 by ZAGAT. We sincerely welcome customers from all over the world to savor our authentic and legendary Tempura bowl." BSE2-63 read more

Yummy! I've always been a big fan of Japanese cuisine but it's kind of hard here in jersey to find good tempura. I'm so happy that this food stall has opened and replaced katsu. Wasn't a big fan of that bread pork chop and chicken dishes. I came here on a Thursday but it was really busy because of the Japanese gourmet fair that was occurring in the store. The wait for my order was 20-25 minutes. I have to say it's their delicious sauce that makes the big and delightful difference. Tempura tends to have that fried oily taste after a while...BUT their delicious sauce is what balances the oily fried taste. I ordered the #1 & #5 but the only difference between the two is that #5 has the fish filet too. That was pretty much the only downer. The portions are generous and I left that place feeling overly stuffed and satisfied. Will come and enjoy other items on their menu. read more
Hands down, my favorite tempura place in New York and New Jersey!! They do tempura RIGHT. Perfect amount of crispness and flavor in their batter. I always get the shrimp with cold soba or the #3 which is tempura shrimp over rice. They do the egg so right here, pop it over the rice, and it'll be perfect. The cold soba is simple, but gets the job done!! Located in the Mitsuwa marketplace, expect a line at all times - it also curves kind of awkwardly and make sure you don't get confused with the other lines forming. They also take awhile to prepare your food, and presentation is so pretty!! CASH ONLY - But all the food spots are here, so being cash! Prices are decent (9-12$) a little on the high side for what the food is. read more
