I went completely dressed down on a Sunday and they had the football game on. We had ordered a few drinks and some shots, because everything was extremely inexpensive...I'm talking $3-$4 an item!!! You really can't argue with that! My fiance had their 3 carne asada taco special for $3! He said they were very good that he ended up ordering 3 more! Haha Let that speak for itself, because sometimes...well lets be honest most of the time, bar food is not good! They either have good drinks & good drink prices but the food is horrible. Tavern not to make any jokes or comments about the Adult book store located just east of the establishment. I must have struck a nerve or something. I made, what I considered an innocent comment/joke about the bar being right next door to a Porn shop. The snotty, little, freak bartender went berserk ! She really got her panties in a bunch and probably disfigured the ugly-ass tattoo on her butt. She immediately had me escorted out. First and last time I will ever come here. I asked the waitress if I could watch the football game and she told me to sit anywhere and she will change the channel for me. It took 20 minutes for her to finally come over to sift through the channels when she finally gave up and said she would be right back. From there It took another 10 minutes for someone else to come along and ask me if I needed anything. I explained the other woman was helping me and she proceeded to say the other woman couldn't find the channel I requested and if I needed anything else. I asked if I could sample a beer and she said it would be $1.50. I asked what It tasted like and she said she didn't know. As soon as I ordered she closed out my bill and gave me the check before the food and drink could come out. I've never been to a bar where I felt rushed and unwanted and honestly felt discriminated. I explained the situation to my boyfriend and he called to file a complaint and requested to speak with a manager. The woman on the phone proceeded to say the manager was busy and if she could assist. He expressed his need to speak with a manager and the woman was very rude and explained he was not available. She then hung up the phone while he was mid sentence! This is the first time I've encountered such horrible customer service here in Arizona since I moved here. Dim, gritty dive bar that ain't half bad for getting sloshed and catching a small live act. The space feels cramped, sandwiched between a difficult parking lot and the light rail. The back patio is oh-so tiny, with patrons crammed like sardines to have a smoke or take a break from loud music. PROTIP: There's seating out front. This tavern has an impressive beer selection...but it's all canned! Canned!? They seem to recycle them all which is super cool. On the negative, paying $4 a pop really justifies bottles of local brews like SanTan. So it's a decent little venue. It has a decent beer selection. The rockabilly atmosphere will make you feel cool. So while it doesn't exceed in acoustics or value, I wouldn't mind coming back to shotgun a cold one. read more

A dive bar with sticky tables, a seedy nightclubish decor, and a barely working air conditioner...and I can't wait to return. There's something very welcoming about Tempe Tavern. You feel like a regular when you walk in the door--even for the very first time. The staff seemed friendly enough. They have great beers on tap, including Guinness and Four Peaks Hop Knot. And, on Mondays you can get buy-one-get-one on their burgers. Great deal too because their burgers are pretty tasty. The actual burger patty was only "pretty good." It's actually two thinner patties on top of each other. Tasty enough, and seasoned well. BUT, when you combine the patties with the other outstanding ingredients on the burger, including an awesome, locally-baked bun, well, now you have a little bit of magic. And, the fries!?! The fries are some of the best ones I've had in the entire state of Arizona...maybe the world. Not sure how they do it, but those fries are amazing. Apparently they have music acts perform here too, but I left before all of the nightlife started. Still, judging by the food alone, I will definitely return. read more

Why am I on Apache, enjoying a G&T, petting a bulldog, listening to Tori Amos and watching people trying to be nonchalant while they wait for the light rail? I am enjoying the shit outta Tempe Tavern, that is what I am doin! From the iconic sign on the side of the building, to the beautifully designed patio with rusted steel components, an actual Palo Verde tree planted inside the stone grounds with actually enjoyable to sit at high tables, the first impression is casual but surprisingly classy. My friends were already cozied up along with 20 other people laughing and enjoying themselves in the front patio, and the security guy was extremely nice and told me there was even a patio in the front when I entered. I ordered my delicious and strong $2.50 G&T from Casey, a fantastic bartender. When back at the table, other people were laughing on the benches around us and we got to play with Molly, the rescued 80 pound bull dog and throw her crushed ice. When my 3rd G&T drained and singing along to all my high school 90s songs, I decided to try the food. I went for $4 fries with side of mayo and they were amazing- hand cut, def probz not veggie but my god. We had to order another round of fries (which I did with the bartender but you could opt for table service as well). They had veggie options for only $7 bucks. Their other drink specials included 90 Shilling in the bottle for $2 bucks. The single stall womens bathroom was IMMACULATE. Let me stress this next statement: IT SMELLED AMAZING. Like a clean, fresh, vanilla scent with modern fixtures and a nice expensive metal trash can (when you have a snooping trash eating dog you notice these things, ok?). A live band was playing to a packed back room and they were actually enjoyable- but you can still enjoy the throwback on the front patio. The security guards were really diligent about any potential issues with passer-bys and the people watching was premium. The crowd was a true mix, actually diverse with an age range, genre bending, and everyone was relaxed and enjoying themselves. I can't believe they have coffee??? I may have to come back in the morning just to get a cup o joe with the latest Barely Legal to relax on the patio before boarding the light rail! read more

6/6/15 - Google it They said I lied about having cancer, relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis, being on hormones and accused me of crossdressing & prostituting myself (two things I've never done) at the next door adult shop being kicked out 6 times in 2012 of which I had a goatee the entire year. That's me in the dual-pic getting treatment at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center in March 2012, weeks after having 7 inches of my intestines removed on 1/25/12 diagnosed w/Stage 3 Carcinoid Cancer, days away from Stage 4. Two 'former' employees 'recognized' me on the news and contacted TT. Ironically, in Tempe's anti-LGBT discrimination law I made active, a merchant can claim prostitution was being conducted to get out of the complaint. Hmmm... makes one think. If I was kicked out for prostitution, where is the police record or surveillance video??? Where did those two 'witnesses' come from in just a few days??? What motivated them to contact TT and not the media or police??? Logic clearly dictates motive. I'll let you draw your own conclusions. read more

Some of the best drink deals in Arizona. The night time bartenders are sweet and are not ugly ;) I've lived all over the country and I swear, this place has the best bar food I've ever had and the presentation is incredibly impressive. The only downfall is, they don't have as much live music as they used to. I've seen some very diverse and very cool bands come through here. I strongly recommend for coming here on Taco Tuesdays and Thirsty Thursdays. The street tacos are amazing and very affordable and Thursday's $3 Jameson's can not be beat. read more

My two friends gave some homeless people change in the parking lot and when we walked in, she said "I saw you associating with those cockroaches in the parking lot. I love this bar! :D Their food and wings are AMAZING! I get them every chance I can. However, Sherry - a bartender - is very rude. (She could use some customer service lessons from the sweet girls who usually take my to-go orders over the phone.) I tried calling for 20 mins on my way home from work tonight. And when I asked if their number had changed, she said "I was busy doing a million things!" in a bratty/rude tone to me. Not the nicest. I almost walked out. An apology would have been nice instead. Just a nice local bar and small music venue in one. Awesome menu with many burgers to choose from. I opted for the Juan Pablo. Super juicy burger topped with a grilled Poblano pepper. Side of Jalapeno Chips. They have a great beer selection that included inexpensive domestic cans all the way to craft beers. Back room is a stage setup with pretty good sound for such a small venue. We went here to see my wife's co-workers band play(DeadSpawn) and stayed for another as well. A place I'd go back to for some music, but a bit too far to just go for a beer. They even told her it wasn't theirs and she knew we were waiting for ours but just didn't care to accept responsibility. So I came because waiting for the light rail the smell of the cooking burgers tempted a visit. I chose today due to their special of buy one and get one free on the burgers. I ordered the BBQ burger and my date ordered the jalapeño Burger. Pictures attached . Menu calls them 1/2 pound Burgers, but that's misleading. I expected a 1/2 pound patty, but got two I'm guessing 1/4 pound patties. The fries tasted good but maybe it was the waitress not bringing the food sooner or other issues as the fries and burger were not hot as you'd expect. The taste was good minus not tasting the BBQ sauce. I was waiting for over 30 minutes after ordering to get the food. Though the menu doesn't say no to go orders they wouldn't allow me to have the burgers to go. I gave it one star because of the hair and temperature of the food. I would have given it at least 3 stars otherwise. It's good dive bar food and for that if hot would be a 5. I'm basing it off overall and the entire experience. read more

Typical bar happy hour food and drinks. Came with work group of about 20 and the waitress were a little overwhelmed. This was a last minute change in venue because the group wanted to watch the World Series game. The food came out hot and fresh. I didn't drink this night since I didn't see a cocktail menu and wasn't feeling my vodka soda so I just had a coke. It is a dive bar in an older building that looks like a house next to Modern World Adult Store and Arcade. Can't miss the neighbor since the bar is on the corner and the parking lot is hard to get into. The area seems to be gentrifying with the light rail and new apartments across the street. read more

The bartenders look like they hate their lives, and the waitress we had was so rude. I've worked a couple jobs that deal with people - customer service, retail and serving. At least have a freakin' smile on your face, especially if I'm giving you one! The food is okay, and they got our order wrong. The beer selection is decent. Service was slow but that's fine and understandable, since it was just her serving. But she really was a horrible woman. I had an issue with my order and instead of our server just saying "okay" and fixing it, she went out of her way to prove me wrong. I wasn't going to argue so I accepted my wrong order and put it aside. When we were done eating, I put all the stuff to clear together, along with my wrong order I didn't touch, and she refused to pick it up! She picked up all the plates except mine! I was ready for amazing things to happen. My wife and kids were out of town, but I wanted a break from the Instant Ramen and Mac N' Cheese I'd been eating all week. Tempe Tavern seemed like a good choice; local bar, within walking distance of my place. My wife and I had been here before but left because it was too loud, (We were both under 32, and I play drums) but I was both curious and hungry. The Atmosphere: In a word: Loud. It could be a chill place, but holy crap, it is uncomfortably loud. This is coming from someone who likes loud music. It makes the place feel unwelcoming and abrasive, which stands in contrast to the decor. The Food: The menu is the perfect size for a bar; limited, but something for everyone. I had the Western burger with fries. The burger was nicely presented, but had nothing to set it apart from, say, Carl's Jr. The fries were "fresh-cut style", served extra-starchy and limp, yet tasting overcooked. The Service: My server, let's call her "Lefty", promptly took my order and brought me a beer. Ok, doing great so far. 25-30 minutes pass before my food arrives, and it shows up cold,yo! It's a Thursday night, maybe 4-5 tables occupied in the place. Serenity Now! Serenity Now! I shouted, although I could not compete with the Wu-Tang Clan being blasted at sound pressure levels that could awaken ODB from the grave (RIP)! Lefty stops by once, does nothing when I indicate food is "eh, ok", accompanied with the universal hand gesture for so-so. You know the one. I say I'm ready to cash out. In the middle of my meal I had to visit the restroom and after "doing my business" realized there was no toilet paper or paper towels. I pulled my pants up and asked the bartender if I could go into the women's room to get some toilet paper. (We where the only customers in the entire restaurant) She gave me a look of visible and total disgust and she said no. Rather than offer to go get some toilet paper herself, she handed me a stack of paper thin bar napkins and pointed me to the men's room. I'm a feminine presenting individual (I was wearing eyeliner, jewelry and teal nail polish during the visit) and I felt her over the top reaction of disgust was due to my appearance. I was incredibly offended by this behavior. Judging by these reviews, this type of behavior is common from the staff. I've been here quite a few times do to its convenient location. I hope each time will be different. But the customer service is awful and it's not even busy most days I go. Staff is not paying attention and just milling around. Service is SLOWWWWWW! My suggestion is have you staff pay attention and realize they are there to work! Well where to start.....we stop by for a drink this afternoon...we are tourists from Canada down for our 40th birthday So we have a drink and the waiter was a really good guy. So we asked how the bar was at night. He said I'll send over Kennedy who looks after night bottle service. She came over and sat with us for a bit and talked us up and said I'll look after you and make sure you guys have a great night. So we commit to $600 which is no big issue to us as we have had service in Vegas, New York, New Orleans. So we arrive a couple hours later...nice table right beside the dance floor...all of a sudden Kennedy our best friend that is going to look after us just walks by and disregards we were even there. Next we ask for them to send some people to party with...so these "friends" show up. They are all fun and like to party. We notice that all of a sudden there is a bunch of college kids in our private booth and the "friends" are giving our booze away like candy. I go to complain to the bouncer that I want these people out of my booth...so they didn't really do anything about it. All of a sudden within 10 minutes two of my friends are "kicked out" for being too drunk.....And the college kids keep taking our drinks. So over a $1500 later we leave and the "kids" are allowed to just finish our purchase. Total scam show...worst this is we just wanted to have a good time..money wasn't an issue... Just wanted to give the rest of the visitors to Tempe to stay away from this gong show. They never gave us a copy of our receipt either.....nice business... read more
