Their Taco Tuesday Trivia nights are top notch. The tacos are white people style hard shell ground beef tacos, but they're pretty damn solid for a stellar price. Trivia nights are fun, drinks and food are both discounted while Trivia is going on. Their food is exceptional (especially for a dive bar), and especially when their Lead Cook Donovan is working. Their bartenders Hannah and Christian are the perfect Duo, extremely friendly and completely set the vibe of the entire place making you feel welcome, ALWAYS in a contagiously good mood, and always laughing about something. These two have a way about themselves that every bar owner can only hope and dream to find as qualities/attributes in their bartenders, and it wouldn't surprise me if they've gained a solid fan base/following of regulars by now. Between Donovan's stellar food, and Christian and Hannah's good vibes i can't help but make this my go-to spot for a cold beer or Irish car bomb. Cheers guys! read more

Another great place to catch a show. Staff is cool . Drink prices are fair . A few pool tables if you need . Bench seats and high tops are available for seating. The stage is somewhat small - a few times that I've been there some of the band members set up on the floor. The stage isn't high at all . The sound is good and there is a lot of room to hang out . Wish I could put less starrs. This is the worst place I have ever been. I was sitting at the bar and witnessed the worst thing ever. This guy ordered a pitcher and was told he couldn't because his friends were around but he was with a group. So he got his single beer and was headed to the patio to see if his friends were outside. At this point a bald heavier guy grabbed this man by the arm and told him he was not allowed outside and was yelling in his face. The guy said I'm just looking for my friends outside and the employee screams "I'm the owner of this place sit your ass back down and stay away from the patio with a drink. Like if you're a owner or any employee just handle it better. Say "hey man you can't have have a drink on the patio but if you'd put it on the bar that won't be a problem" this place is gross and the "owner" is a looser. read more

What can one say about Mill Ave. that hasn't already been regurgitated by the volumes on Yelp? Let's just cut to the chase and let an old salty bar goer hit you with the details as I see them, and how I cast my wandering eye upon the beast, I stood in the belly and laughed at doom at the place known as The Timeout Lounge. You enter a darkened space that could fit maybe 60 people, an operationally functioning bar complete with a living human that will get you a drink. The bar staff seems to be a good lot with quick reflexes to grab whatever you ordered to dull your senses. And dulling they will need my hapless bar goer who lifted themselves off the couch for one miserable evening to attempt to recreate ones past, or invigorate what little life you are presently living with a couple of drinks and some fun times that will wash off. But that isn't what happens here, what happens here is a mockery of good intentions and a violent hammering with a spiked mallet of whatever dreams you had of partying on Mill. My first encounter with the locals was from a safe distance, out of eye shot, but well within listening distance as this mountain of a man went completely mad about his disharmony and dislike of Caucasian individuals . I can only shrink a little behind my glass of beer as this loud grizzly growls and shreds the bar tenders sensibilities and claws verbally at unknown slights and injustice that I can only guess came from reality or perception, but this is loud and sustaining well past the point of comfortable. The police are called and the mountain of a human leaves with a flourish and shockwaves of expletives right before the cops arrive. I didn't get the law enforcements view on caucasians that night, but I did order up some shots. My faithful companions had joined me just moments before the floor show and were ready to leave. I talked them down and we continued with nervous laughter. Good times! There are pool tables, yup, pool tables. Come get em...I guess. Go on and pump some money in there and hit the ball with the stick that everyone else touches all the time. Weeeeee. Make sure to wash your hands after 23 beers and a snort of powder. Now hit that there ball. The main event was live music. They host live music, you can see on every square inch of this bar that they have live music, on every table a reminder and a flyer flings to the wind a beautiful song that reaches the heavens themself and floats down like an angels feather and reminds you over and over that they do indeed host live music. But that is it, every inch of the bar a handprint on the interior of a cave devoted to music with a photocopied print ad of the cool all hipster band of Jimmy Jive and the Quaker Yokes Experiences or that metal band Fissure Lickers. But outside the bar there is no promotions of the bands and where they are playing. All that space to have music in, but only a Facebook post and a flyer inside. Then nobody shows up and the bar owners make less money, and the band makes nothing, and the crowd is so lame you just get on your phone and hope to fill that void, that terrible empty spot that is about 4x4 inches. Roughly the same size as a stack of flyers at a record shop where people that go to see live music visit. Facebook is dead and I couldn't be happier, so where can you reach music listeners? Real footwork will now have to be done. Thirty extra minutes will now have to be devoted to passing out some flyers so people can place them in shops. The bands make the music, they bring the instruments, the knowledge of how to play music, the countless terrible hours spent banging away or strumming blisters on to their stupid little fingers. But that isn't enough, oh the inglorious drudgery of sending an email to the local free rags for their music listing page, the shameful plodding of arranging some small bit of promotion so that an audience can be informed of where to be. It is all the talents fault I am sure. I guess the bands could always promote the beer prices as a sort of cross trade. The scuttle is that the joint is haunted. I don't know anymore than what I just wrote. I have seen some multiple failures of amplified equipment on a regular basis but haven't witnessed any possessions or free roamers but I can only think that any disembodied spirit could find better haunting grounds that Mill Ave. in a strip mall. What could the poor ghouls fault be in this life that they would be trapped in purgatory, wandering the 23 square feet of the Timeout Lounge forever? Did they mistreat someone in a dive bar by fooling around with their drink? Did they cheat at pool and do something with that little blue cube of chalk? Or were they simply Caucasian? We may never know and I hope to holy heck that we get a little timeout from the lounge. 3 stars for the good sports they are, because that's all they are a sports bar, not a venue. read more

There are several shared characteristics of a good dive bar: 1. Cash only for cheap, stiff drinks. 2. Pool tables (or alternately, shuffle board. darts must be combined with some other lure in order to count.) 3. Jukebox (classic rock required, the top 40 laughed out of the place.) 4. An air of disrepair (rips in the booth upholstery, musty smell of smoke on the air- because despite the ban, it's already been cured into the wood.) This place has all those things in spades. I hardly ever end up at the Time Out Lounge because I never carry cash, but the drinks are deliciously strong and don't strip your wallet of its greenery too quick. There's an ATM there too. The pitchers and half pitchers are also pretty cheap, but if you're drinking by yourself, you're required to get the half pitcher. Apparently they can't serve you a drink the size of your head in one sitting. What wacky laws. There are several pool tables that take up the majority of the space, but if you're going during the rush, good luck securing one of them. I'm not that great at pool, but I really enjoy playing at this place (usually with a good partner I can coast off of and then gloat with after we win) because of the atmosphere. So don't be a hater. There's a dart board off to the side of the place in a raised area with a couch and a jukebox. My friend and I got our asses handed to us on a plate by a couple of British expatriates in a game of cricket. But tall dark and handsome can beat me any day. It's all about the accent. Surprisingly, I've never used the jukebox. But I have heard wonderful tales of it from multiple people. read more

This is a solid Tempe dive bar. If you like pool, it is great. If you like a younger mustache/hipster/punker, crowd this is the place for you. The layout is great, with booths, pool tables, high tables, then a long bar. It is scummy, but an acceptable scummy. The juke box is up there with the likes of Shady's and TT's Roadhouse. If the cash-only thing is a deterrent, you don't belong in a dive bar. The drinks are poured right, and hey, the service may suck at times, but you are in a fucking dive bar. DIVE is what that means. I think I may have seen a bartender do a line of coke off of the back of the toilet in the ladies restroom (the door faces the bar, and it opened just in time to see the few people in the can huddled around the toilet). I can't say that is for sure what happened, but hey, this place is a shithole. A shithole that some will love, and other won't understand, and more power to those that do. read more

This place is totally aided by having one of the best juke boxes I have ever heard. Not a shitty MP3 player one either. An actual jukebox, where the employees change the CDs! I have listened to friend's bands on this juke box which is kinda fun! Nonetheless, it is a dive. It has all of the dive qualities, drunk regulars, middle aged women who are still hanging in bars and ratty pool tables. The bartenders are pretty cool, the menu is nonfunctional at most times and if someone spills a drink on you, they will usually buy you another or are going to fight you. read more

This depressing little cash-only dive bar is sometimes our last call spot when we are out and about in Tempe. Entertainment is provided by several pool tables, one dart board, and one sad little jukebox. We drove up from Tucson to go to the Time Out Lounge to hear Hans Olson play some fantastic blues harmonica and guitar. We had heard him before and knew we wanted to hear him again. We didn't know what to expect of the bar, but we were pleasantly surprised. The owner, Laura, was so welcoming and nice. There were many regulars to hear the music, and when they heard we were from out of town, several came up to introduce themselves and to recommend other places to hear blues in Tucson. Hit up Time Out for a late-night drink with a date. Ambience: -strip mall dive bar -definitely nicer inside than what appeared from the outside (no windows, heavy industrial looking door) -quintessential dive bar with pool tables, beer paraphernalia, TVs with reruns of Seinfeld shows, jukebox, 70s decor in the bathroom -seating available at bar (lots of space) and booths around the perimeter Bar: -full bar, few beers on tap (maybe 2-3), lots of styles of bottled beer including microbrews and a lovely pear cider -also has munchies for sale: snack bags of all sorts of chips, sodas -is NO LONGER a cash-only bar, minimum $10 tab to use a credit card. -$15.50 bought two double whiskey & cokes (strong), 1 PBR and 1 pear cider Crowd: -I was the only female here -patronized by a lot of guys who looked like they were all regulars and all buddies -everyone was playing pool -obnoxiously bad foot odor permeated the place for like 2 whole hours I really enjoyed my time in Time Out, no punishment here, just lots of interesting things to look at and inexpensive beers to try. read more

After a bike ride to Green, my friends live right near Time Out and I had yet to get over here. They led me through a parking lot (why am I still shocked when 'cool' places are in strip malls?) and we managed to find room on the gated area outside to lock our bikes (there were like 12 bikes already attached). After getting my 2.50 miller high life in the bottle and settling into a soft brown booth, I got to assess the place. There are a lot of pool tables, but i SUCK at pool and would feel nervous playing here. There was a decent crowd here for a Monday night-the bar was lined, all the booths were taken and some of the small round tables with high stools were taken. Def. tats and casual wear, but it seemed like a real 'regulars' bar instead of much of a scene, per se. I esp. like the ladies bathroom-with the wicker seat with the high back facing the can-WTF? Very surreal. They had some arcade games in the back and I spotted a dart board in the front of the bar behind some hanging stained glass panel (yeah, its weird explaining it-you just kinda have to be there, you know?) so I have got to get my dart set on. Esp. since its located next to the ginourmous juke box that inexplicibly has a plush couch and wooden chair right in front of it (?!?!). It reminds me of a rural bar, to be honest, like something you would find off the highway in PA-and thats not a bad thing. I can see how this place gets packed on a weekend. read more

Went here after my gig at The Sets, just across the street. My intern works here and I figured I'd bring a bunch of peeps and help the kid make money since I don't pay him. (INTERN, get it?) Anyway, it was a pretty cool crowd. Lil bit o' everythin'. Tattooed, punk, prep, Scottsdale-ish girls. The juke was awesome. Plenty of pool tables. Great drink specials (hey, I have "connections" and got 2 - for - 1 cards for my friends!) and friendly staff. Sort of. There was a girl working the bar who said, pretty loudly, to MY intern: "I can handle the bar myself tonight." Then she asked for his help once it started filling up. What a bitch but whatever! As a bar, this place actually has the propensity to be something incredible. As it is, it's really chill and great and I like to kick it there when I have a chance. With a few slight modifications, I could picture Time Out Lounge being transformed into my permanent hang out. You ever seen that movie Mean Streets? I could totally see me being Harvey Keitel and Time Out Lounge being my permanent hangout spot. I love the amount of pool tables and the dartboard and the internet jukebox. I like the whole layout of the bar. It's very cool and most of the bartenders are really nice. One of my favorite touches is the tables that have endless amounts of various graffiti in the form of "fuck you's" "so-and-so was here" and strange political points and counterpoints that it all blends together into a nonsensical collage of intoxication. Brilliant. The bathrooms are awesome. There are murals that have a lot going on. It's really fantastic after you've had a few pitchers. If you're ever in this part of Tempe and want to have a couple beers and shoot pool, Time Out will do a damn good job. read more

Hipster Hideaway! When Casey Moores is too packed, this is the best second resort. It's tucked away in this shopping center with a specialty shoe store and a pet store. I usually stop by on Sundays when there's FREE pool, but the regulars can be a little 'table stingy' so you may have to ask nicely. The drinks are pretty cheap and vibe is pretty chill. They have always been super crazy about carding at the door, I guess this is a Tempe thing, but coming here for months every Sunday, do you really have to ask twice? Aside from that, it's nice to grab a booth and listen to the great juke box! Usually the music isn't very loud, so you can have a conversation without yelling into someones ear. My friend took me to Time Out Lounge the summer after I turned 21. I didn't know too many cool bars at the time so when my friend turned me on to this place I was so excited. The atmosphere is exactly what I look for in a dive bar: easy going bartenders, cheap beer ($1.50 PBR), cheap pool tables (4 of them), and a crowd that doesn't care what other people look like. What I mean by that last statement is I've met people there in college, people there for a pool night out, as well as older biker looking folks who were a riot. If a friend wants me to show them a good bar in Tempe, I take them to Time Out Lounge to have a few beers and then over to Casey Moore's. Without fail, that is a great night. read more

Bar to the right. Booths to the left. Toys for Tots boxes overflowing with gifts next to the door. Lot of black tshirts. Accompanied by black jackets. Or black hoodies. Some emo hair, black or otherwise. One lone Indian guy (not me) walking around the pool tables, looking a little lost. An old couple cozied up next to the bar. Mr K nods his head. He likes this place. ACTION: Bonnie G and Mr K walk to the bar. Friendly bartenderess tells them the specials. They order a cheap 1/2 pitcher. Mr K spies a bag of Doritos. He wants Doritos. He mentions it to Bonnie G. Bonnie G says "Get it!" But then Mr K and Bonnie G talk about something else, and the bag of Doritos falls back into the recesses of Mr K's mind. The two hang for a good some time, shooting the shit. Bonnie G mentions the women's bathroom has a wicker chair facing the toilet. Mr K doesn't know what to say to that. Bonnie G then says that the Sketchy Tempe tour is not done, and advises Mr K to go the bathroom here vs the next place. Mr K then goes to the men's bathroom. No wicker chair here. Just a random mural on the ceiling. Why? He shrugs his shoulders. He walks out of bathroom and meets up with Bonnie G again and they walk to the Toys for Tots boxes, full of those dolls that open and close their eyes depending on if they're upright or lying down. Mr K didn't think a place like this would do something like Toys for Tots. He begins to feel bad. Bad, presumptive Mr K. But then the two leave and head out to the next location... i fell out of the TOL routine for some time, but i'm back and really liking it. about six pool tables, and they hold a few tournaments, so you end up with a lot of serious pool players throughout the week, along wtih hipster, tattoo types. the bartenders are sweet as can be, and poor a nice, strong drink for cheap beyong belief. jukebox is one of those electronic, download database ones, and so there is some good stuff on there, or you can get it if it's not. thursday nights here are pretty good, weekend nights can be hit or miss. lots of big booths and few bar tables, and long bar that runs the length of the joint. hidden in a strip mall, don't be discouraged by the boring outside, it's pretty fun inside if you're a local read more

One of my new favorite haunts. The good thing about living at Mill & Southern is a great bar selection within a block or so, OK so I'm into dive bars, it's almost heaven. The first time I went into the Timeout, it reminded me of a hundred bars back home in Pittsburgh. I didn't feel alot of personality the first couple times, not until I met and made some friends. It's a bar that plays pool, as you can see by all the trophy's and the bulletin board cluttered with league info. I'm a casual player so it's a little intimidating at first, but everyone there is great. That's the allure; the people. You can't look around and see it in the fixtures, it's the conversations, the eclectic hair, the young, the old, the ones with blue chalk wiped on their pants and spilling PBR as they giggle away. The bartenders are fun and easy on the eyes-Daddy Like! AND, last but not least, I dig the jukebox and the tunes that get downloaded, alot of punk, new wave and other tunes that I grew up loving. read more

Our favorite dive bar in Tempe. Always deserted and they get to know you quickly. A few years back it made of the 'Best in Phoenix' lists for pool tables or dive bar, and then it became very popular. Fortunately, those people seem to have shifted to the Yucca on the opposite corner now. I guess I shouldn't wish business away from this place, but fewer tools make it more enjoyable.
