Temaki Joint feels like the culmination of Chef Duy Pham's incredible career in Colorado, and it truly is something special. Came here for the 20 piece omakase and it was worth every penny. It was an absolute blast and the food was outstanding. The staff were very friendly, attentive and the whole sushi bar you can tell they are operating like a family! Everyone had each others back and had a fun and energetic vibe. Chef Duy's takes you on a food journey, explaining his inspiration and creativity for each bite. I also appreciate his careful selection of fish after each piece. Each bite is a progression and builds on the flavors and texture of the previous. It truly is an experience and a must try. His creations are much more than just a traditional Ngiri or omakase. The ingredients crafted in each bite amplifies each others flavors while making sure the taste of the fish remains the star. It never overpowers it. I won't go into too much detail because I want to keep it a surprise for you guys which is which. But there were a few dishes that make you feel like you're eating a steak dinner, having an unagi bowl, eating fish and chips or eating the coffee Kopiko Candy. It's hidden upstairs above a pho restaurant with just about 6-8 seats at the sushi bar, so every meal feels personal. I've been lucky enough to eat Chef Duy's omakase over the years at Foraged, Hana, and now here. He somehow keeps getting better. What stands out isn't just the quality of the fish. It's how much heart goes into everything. Chef Duy loves talking about food, sustainability, and making the most of every ingredient. Nothing gets wasted, and you can taste that level of care in every course. Don't skip dessert either. He makes those himself and always wants to share a little extra. Come hungry. Have to give them credit for a small opening space to test Boulder. Partnering with space Pho Kitchen has had for years but underutilized, they partnered in a way for Temaki Joint could operate upstairs and Pho Kitchen could cook and serve downstairs. So not really a pop up as originally presumed and that they would be temporary here. They close next week on the upstairs patio but will reopen in a month after remodeling the upstairs interior space to serve more. Gojd to know they will not be any farther away. The food was very good. I don't drink sake and was not in the mood for wine or spirits but know they have an extensive offering. We did have a selection of their temaki rolls though uniquely shaped, rather than cone shaped, they are columnar, like a grill, this gives and even distribution of flavors and textures with each bite. One consequence is that you need to keep track of your rice as it can sometimes slip out of the nori. But I loved the concept, I had the yellowtail tail with cilantro, forgoing the jalapeño. The fish was fresh and tender. I also had the sautéed mushroom hand roll, never before had a non fish hand roll. They were sautéed and very tender Asian mushrooms and very tasty but slippery! My third hand roll was Japanese Snapper, similar to red snapper, with plum purée and shiso. I'd love to have this seasoning with a different fish that was a bit more tender. But it was fine with this for flavor. My husband had the blue fin tuna hand roll well as the Hokkaido Scallops. He also had the blue crab negiri. Once they reopen, we will be back. Parking is really easy behind the building . The chefs were friendly and there were a few other diners in this slightly hidden space. read more

I was lucky enough to try out Temaki Joint at the soft opening. We had a sampling of the most popular dishes. There was a ton of people so it was hard to get a true feel for the dining experience on a normal day. The truly special experience was when I came back on my own with a couple friends. We were 1 of 2 parties dining, pretty quiet night as they've only been open for 2 weeks. Being that 2 of 3 of us were new there... we asked the chef if he could order us what he recommends. There was an octopus carpaccio that was phenomenal. We ordered a big bottle of Little Sumo sake (we wanted best bang for the buck). Chef helped give us a little experience in the sashimi section, nigiri section and we ended with handrolls. It was a perfect sprinkling of the menu. I am the omakase Queen... as I've tried all the omakases in Denver. And I would say this is the best. Why? Well it's more personalized to the size of your group and your ability to eat without losing the quality. Our bill came out to $300 for 3 people... $90 was in alcohol. That's just unreal for this type of dining these days. I've had Duy Pham's omakase before... and although it's always exquisite... I tend to tap out 3/4 of the way through his menu. Now... he has it so you can stop at any point and he will alter his recommendations to your personal taste. In the past it was... this is your package. Bottom-Line-Up-Front: 1) pricing on the online website is inaccurate 2) The Temaki sets are not a good value, and 3) my husband experienced some pretty obvious retaliation (a ton of spicy pepper paste added to his last roll) when he requested not to receive any more aburi items. 5/5 for the $10 piece of raw scallop nigiri 3/5 for the fish quality in general 2/5 for service (water jug was kept full at least) 1/5 for retaliation 1/5 for the dishonest pricing 1/5 for the ambiance relative to other spots in Boulder (the Flatirons view from the patio is nice but the neon LED lights & astro turf covered patio really cheapened the place given what they're charging. ---------------- My husband and I came here on the glowing recommendations of the "Crazy Hungry Asians of Colorado" Facebook group. To say I'm saddened by my experience here is an understatement. We came in as walk-ins (encouraged per their voicemail) to order some temaki and gauge whether it'd be worth coming in for the $180 omakase. We love Kizaki, Odell's, Osaka's, Uchi, Sushi Den, and some of the other higher end options in Colorado so we were thrilled to see this place opened in Boulder. The first unpleasant surprise was that pricing advertised on the online website is $2/item less expensive than they were in the restaurant. In hindsight I should've complained but I bit my tongue. I know it's been 4 months since opening so pricing can change but this felt a bit dishonest given they're capable of updating their other social media. My husband also asked if there's any idea as to what fish they're serving in the temaki sets and the waiter said "it's different every time," when we asked if he could check with the kitchen he just reiterated that "it's different every time." We ordered a 5 piece handroll set, a 7 piece hand roll set, and a specialty nigiri. There's only two sushi chefs and no kitchen items to offload the demand beyond them. while we were fine patiently waiting, it took close to 40 minutes to get the first piece of sushi. We were served different handrolls for each course (i understand this could happen due to the inequal number (5 vs 7), but there didn't even to be the slightest attempt at making what we were getting match up, which is disappointing as we were just splitting them throughout the night only to be met with a repeat handroll that could've been served at the same time so we could compare our enjoyment of the fish. The handroll sets were okay but I'm leaving this review as there seemed to be a bit of retaliation in what we were given. They brought out duplicate handrolls for a second course of what we were initially given so we sent those back, the waiter checked "did you receive anything with truffle? it was supposed to have truffle." - Absolutely nothing we ordered came with truffle throughout the night. For our last rolls, my husband and I were served 2 hamachi handrolls, his with a serious amount of spicy pepper paste and mine without, (this seemed to be retaliation for the fact he requested not to receive any more aburi items after the previous nigiri was so heavily torched it was inedible to him). Note that we didn't send anything back, we just grinned and bared it. I tried a bit of his and there's no way the kitchen could've sent that out expecting someone to enjoy it (FWIW i love heat, pepper paste, yuzu kosho, and wasabi. The fact he was served this genuinely felt like an immature prank. All in all I'm a bit disappointed that the handroll set was full of some of the cheapest items on the menu, I wasn't trying to get bargain per se, but nothing made me inclined to return for the $180 omakase. I will note that places usually include a negitoro roll within a set handing menu, but due to things taking as long as they did and the seemingly purposeful mistreatment I did not feel like ordering an additional roll as much as I may have wanted it. It was also a protracted dining experience with a significant time spent in between rolls so I'd definitely advise to not come when you're truly hungry. For a breakdown of rolls received so you can make your own determination I've included them below, but as the waiter said "it's different every time" so you're probably have a better time than we did. Wonderful food, chef served us our omakase personally, and told us his favorites. There was only one tiny downside, I hyped it up to my wife, who is at her night shift, and told her I would bring her some as she's only 15 minutes away, sent her the menu and went to place the order and they said sorry it's sushi, we're not comfortable sending it out of here.
