Great staff and location and a really nice selection. I especially like to go to the back right corner of the store where there is a cooler that sells craft beer singles. I've tried some really great stuff from there and have learned about some really excellent breweries. They also have a nice selection of canned mixed drinks, also sold individually. I enjoy trying out new things, so I really like this on both accounts. Sometimes there are tastings here, which is fun. Service is always excellent and Covid-19 concerns and protocols are taken seriously. A great little shop with great products and easy parking. read more

I had a great experience here. I had driven 15 minutes to the store and had forgotten My mask. A woman greeted me within a minute of arriving and offered me a mask, which I SO appreciated. She was super helpful in giving me the lay of the land and gave some great recommendations. I left with a lot more than I came in for! This is a quaint wine and beer store. The selection of wine is great. The beer is limited although there are solid options and there is a small liquor section by the entrance. The prices are reasonable. I have seen good prices on the featured wines. They have put measures in place during CO-VID like a line with a set number of people in the store at a time and hand sanitizer at the entrance along with the staff wearing gloves. read more

A complete surprise, a good one! First glance meh, but then you start looking at the wines in the shelves and holy cow they have some serious stuff! The Som at the checkout is amazing you just have to ask. My personal advice is spend a little more than you planned, have the Som, a woman, guide you and enjoy. The incident I'm writing about happened at the end of October. I did not have a Yelp app but now I do. We are local, been a customer for 30 years. I've always had a black wine bottle carry bag from BWM until the handle broke maybe a week before incident. I had another one in my car and used that to get my 6 bottle 10% off. A new girl, young, blond ponytail already had a bad attitude when I first came in so I sought someone else's help. I go to check out and she tells me I can't have my 10 % discount because I don't have their black wine bag mine said Whole Foods. I told her it broke after using it for so long so I'm using this one. Sorry NO! Manager comes out and I'm like I spend over $100 every other week in here and she won't let me have a discount? He's like what's the problem,? Could of cared less said I had to buy another one of their bags only ...sorry it's a promotional thing. I left feeling blown away so disrespected like I as a customer was trying to get away with something. I explained the bag was so old it broke I've been a customer 30 years! To make things worse I emailed the owner of BWM twice ( Brett Zimmerman) and received not one reply. Beware locals this is not good customer service whatsoever. Found my new liquor store in North Boulder by Lucky's market. NB Liquors has been amazing and selection is incredible. They also treat their customers like gold. read more

Limited selection, with wines priced much higher than other local stores (and some as much as 50% above online shops). There is very little printed information about the wines. The staff were helpful but not terribly well informed. When I was there an entire aisle was blocked by a giant trash cart. I will not shop there again. read more

Terrible customer service!!!! Do Not go here!! My daughter received a gift from out of state to be picked up on her 21st birthday. Apparently you can not pick up/purchase alcohol in Colorado until you have received your horizontal license. Fine, that's all they needed to say but they went on and on to make both she and I feel like we were doing something illegal. I asked if I could pick it up for her. Apparently no, because she had already shown her license so she needed to leave the store. Then they called her back to humiliate her even more with the manager. Absolutely appalling! read more

This review is long overdue. The Boulder Wine Merchant was my neighborhood wine shop when I first moved to Boulder, and now 4 years later it is once again my neighborhood wine ship. This is good news for my wine drinking habit, bad news for my pocketbook I am sure! I am always introduced to a beautiful new wine when I go into this shop. I leave with a delicious recommendation and have always been extremely satisfied! The staff is extremely knowledgeable -last week I debated the merits with one of the employees of Prosecco vs. Champagne. The Wine Merchant is really really good at the one thing that matters: choosing excellent wines and selling them at a good price. Their monthly special selection (one red, one white) are often amazing for about $8. Despite being a fairly small shop, they deliver better deals than the big stores, and they make great selections. If you're at all into wine, good wine, you'll find it here. It's not Liquor Mart, but they have lots of good wine from all over, and they know their stuff. The owner is a certified wine master and can hob nob with the rarified elites, but he is sensitve to individual tastes and budget. More than once he has help me find just the right bottle. The rest of the staff are just as good. They will help you expand your wine knowlege and taste, or just sell you what you want, up to you. read more

Pretty good selection and pricing for a small wine shop close to our house. However, you'd think that if they're gonna be so silly (anything below medical grade masks make no difference) and condescending about a required mask they would change gloves between each transaction? Seems ridiculous and 100% invalid if we're all sharing the germs on the workers gloves? I certainly don't mind being socially conscious, but I don't like being treated like an idiot when were all interacting with the same gloves and consequently the same germs. read more

Yeah - you could go to Liquor Mart and shop the closeout bins for a "deal", or you could go to Ace Liquors and spend a mint after browsing the aisles with no assistance whatsoever, but at the Wine Merchant you always get value. The people who work at the Wine Merchant always seem to get it right for me. They don't mind spending the same amount of time to help me find an 8.99 wine than they do a 30 dollar wine, and they ask a lot of good questions about what and who you're drinking it with. They have a real passion for the goods and it shows through. read more

I've heard people say they are snobby at this store... However, when I've gone into this store the service is always excellent. The people working come right up and ask to help. Paige, a handsome gray haired gentleman, is almost always there. He is knowledgeable about pairing wines with food. If I am going to a party or having one it is always nice to have a bit of his advice to help me pick - it adds a story that I can take to the party with me. read more

Being from South Carolina, I didn't realize that you could only buy wine in the liquor/wine stores. We were on the hunt for some Moscato, so we came into the Boulder Wine Merchant. After browsing thru the store, we finally had to ask for assistance in finding the Moscato's. We were directed directly to the Dessert wines and the lady helping us offered her opinion on her favorite brand of wine. We decided to try the Saracco Moscato D'Asti, all the bottles of wine seemed pretty pricey to me, the same bottle in South Carolina would cost me $6 less a bottle! Thankfully the Moscato D'Asti was delicious! Very sweet and subtle, we enjoyed it so much that we went back for 3 more bottles the following day. The Boulder Wine Merchant not only carries liquor and wine, they also had a nice selection of cheese, prosciutto and a small selection of crackers as well. read more

Excellent mid-sized wine store with knowledgeable, friendly staff.

This was my 3rd time visiting this liquor store, and to be honest it's probably my last. I visited over the weekend to see my sister who lives in Boulder. I decided to kill some time by checking out this liquor store, and I told my younger sister (who's 19) if she wanted to come with me she can. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted pleasantly by a clerk who I thought was a nice guy at first. We scoped out the store, looked for deals (which there weren't) and I decided to buy a 4 pack of beer instead of buying wine. As soon as we got to the check out counter, the clerk seemed super nervous and anxious about us. I'm 25 years old, and I've never had this experience in my life. I gave him my ID quickly because I knew he was going to ID me no matter what. As soon as he asks for it, he looks over at my younger sister and ask aggressively, "I'm gonna need to see your ID as well!!!" My sister just looks at him confused telling him "I'm just here following my brother around". The clerk gets more aggressive and keeps demanding for her ID. My sister gives it to him and he starts screaming, "you're under age I can't sell this to you because I don't know if you're buying it for her or not" and rips it quickly out of my hands like it's a weapon! I was totally shook after hearing that ridiculous comment! I'm in the alcohol industry! and I get it! it's a college campus town, and you have to be aware of everyone that comes into the store, especially under age college students, but it might help maybe posting a sign, or validating our ID's and letting us know before we step into the store that Minors under the age 21 are not permitted in the store! I was absolutely shocked and felt miserable leaving this store!! I can't believe this guy treated me the way he did. Anyways, I decided to take my business HAZELS BEVERAGE WORLD afterwards and bought the same beer cheaper, with better customer service! Sorry Boulder wine merchant, I'm a sommelier/wine connoisseur and that was the last time you'll ever see my face in that store again!! The clerk who helped me was a bald headed guy with glasses and a light voice. He didn't seem like he knew anything about the wine industry or alcohol in general. Also what upset me was the fact that you guys need to get some affordable wines in that store that are actually decent!! So..my neighborhood wine shop. How i would love to love you baby, but you just ain't doing it for me. One of my friends recently turned me on the an Argentinan effervescent white wine known as Tincho. This wine is light, just the merest touch of sweetness, and with a quarter of muddled lime and some raspberries/blackberries..absolute heaven in a glass. I know it's hard to find...I've been told this cause my friend's family owns a huge wine distribution business in Sun Valley and he's outta cases. I thought if anywhere, the Merchant could help me out. I approached a girl in glasses who literally turned her nose up at me and told me definitively, "No don't have it. Never heard of it" and walked away. Thankfully, another girl approached me and steered me towards a vino verde from Portugal. Served it's purpose, but not even close. Also passed by the two owners on this visit- both master sommeliers. I serve fine wine for a living. Recommend it, sell it, steer people to where they can buy it. I have served these two at numerous wine tastings where they bring their own wines. There will be 30 different wines with a 1/2 glass each and they will pack them up without offering us even a taste or a kind word on the way out. Don't really care, but we are extremely wine knowledgable and it is quite the missed opportunity for everyone involved. Thankfully, they're passing the business to another sommelier, one of whom I believe i know from before-mentioned wine tastings so I may give this place another chance! read more

I live right by this place and it is a good spot to get beer. I know, I know it's a "wine shop." But they also have a pretty good selection of beer that, for the area, borders on cheap. If they brought the prices down on the alcohol I would make this my regular spot to buy booze. I would have given it four stars except this one time I bought two six packs because it was cheaper than a twelve pack and the guy rolled his eyes after he told me they had twelve packs and I replied this was cheaper. I guess when you work in a liquor store a dollar isn't a big deal though! read more

My price range for wine is the low end, in the 9.00 to 14.00 range, and every month they have a new featured red and white at the front of the store at that price that you can never go wrong with. If the current featured red isn't up my alley, there's a selection of other monthly highlighted options right behind it up front for a similar price. That said, they're always doing tastings of the higher end stuff too if you're looking for something more specific. The staff is super friendly and it's nice not to get scoffed at for asking for a good bottle of wine for 12 bucks! I'll be coming back here for a long time. Ask about their pre-selected mixed case of red or whites if you're looking to stock up. It changes monthly and is an absolute bargain. On another note, recently it seems like they've been putting more effort into the craft beers they carry in the back. Some really unique stuff, local limited items, and more that they're excited to talk to you about. Good experience for sure. read more

I lived really close to the wine merchant, and i love to drink wine. However, they are so snooty and rude here. I can't imagine supporting them again. The last 3 times i have been in i have tried to ask questions about specific wines, asked for suggestions comparing wines that i like that they don't have. All three times the person working (different employees mind you) didn't offer to help, suggest, or even smile. I was really wishing for a neighborhood vibe where i could dork out on wine with someone, but alas they have been unhelpful and not so pleasant. This place is a bit of a mixed bag. It is difficult for me not to let a few a bad apples spoil the whole bunch. There are at least 2 guys who work there who are very arrogant and offer no help. There are 2 or 3 others who are very helpful and customer service oriented. I have had both good and bad experiences at this place.
