Neighborhood gem! I have been to Tech Shield on Broadway four times and every time they have fixed my problem quickly--then explaining to me what went wrong and how to avoid doing it again. I'm fairly tech-savvy and they help me a lot. Plus, their prices are great. Even more impressive is how much they've helped my neighbor, an older woman who is terrified of her computer. They have gently led her to computer literacy and confidence. She is also one of their biggest fans and how I heard about them in the first place. (They also helped my babysitter and fixed her ancient PC to the point that she can use it for her new job as a teacher.) I will add that they use a very cool remote connection help AND have a very patient step-by-step method that is critical when helping somebody do something over the phone. These guys are shady stay away. Last year I dropped a XPS 15 9560 in for water damage I met the owner seemed like a cool dude at the time and like he really knew his stuff. He showed me around his shop told me about a Surface Pro he was working on and how he was the one of the few people in the country that could work on them. So I dropped it off got a quote call back about a week later because I don't hear anything said he was busy but got the PC to boot but ram wasn't being recognized. He said that wasn't much info on the laptop because of how new it is and there is a general lack of info as far as 3rd party repairs. I saw some videos on youtube about the repair industry and learned manufactures tend to keep schematics and such unavailable to 3rd party shops. So I thought this may take a few months before any information becomes available so I sit tight. Now like 4-5 months go by almost forget call the shop to see what is going on I talk to a employee not the owner and he tells me the laptop isn't their and is gone which is bullshit. How much space can a laptop really take up? I received NO EMAILS or PHONE CALLS entire time to inform me. If you want to risk getting scammed like me take your chance. read more

Hard to rate this company as the owners seem very eager to provide a good service and the repairs so far has been excellent. But the 3 young girls in the front they really really need training. First the called me ma'm which no one uses anymore. I purchased 3 products and every time...every single time one of the girls asked me for my ID like I was switching identity with someone? Makes no sense. Then they asked me if I wanted a new battery in my cel phone because it was swallowing...ok I said yes. But they did not charge me for it? So do they added the new battery or not? At that point I did not want to argue with them anymore. To the owners: Please please find intelligent and knowledgeable people even if it cost more. I wish I could give these guys extra stars!! I can't explain how thankful I am. I am a design student and recently my hard drive decided to crash containing my entire college career. I looked into some companies I knew of and everyone was going to charge A LOT of money and they had to ship it out to a specialist! I walked by Tech Shield the other day and saw they did data recovery. For one last shot I decided to get a price from them. Turns out the guy (wish I could remember his name) was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. He called me before I was even home to tell me he was able to recover my data for a much, much, much cheaper price than I was anticipating. He had it to me the next day and when I thanked him and told him my experiences with the other companies. He replied "I could charge a lot but it's not fair to the customer" WOW probably the best customer service I have ever experienced! read more

I have a computer again! I took my Dell Latitude here because it was acting poorly for a couple of years. I got it in 2007 right when Windows Vista came out, so naturally, Dell put Vista on the computer and some other software programs (i.e. McAfee) that were supposed to be compatible with Vista but definitely were not. So I've had problems since I bought this computer 4 years ago. I had my breaking point with this computer about a month ago and brought it in to Daniel and gave him a list of all of the problems I was having. A day later, he calls me back and lets me know that fortunately nothing was wrong with the hardware. The main problem was the OS. Daniel fixed everything--backed up the files on the drive, put Windows 7 and new security software on the computer, and everything is working smoothly again. Price was less than I expected too. Yes, this could probably be done by your IT expert friend for free, but none of my friends are computer-savvy, so I'm going to go to Tech Shield for future problems. read more

WARNING, STAY AWAY! Tech Shield was the very best place to go for computer problems. In fact I sent many customers to them as the customer service was the best I have ever received. Very sadly, now it has the absolute worst customer service I have ever experienced. Dan was amazing. Perhaps his departure is the reason for the extreme fall. It is not that they aren't nice guys, they simply just do not understand customer service. Plain and simple. Communication skills are horrible! Even their new more restrictive hours make it nearly impossible for anyone who works downtown to get there before 6pm on weekdays. They close every day at 6. Making only Saturdays possible. Yet their phone answering machine still says 7pm. What a shock. Seriously, they went from the best ever to the worst ever. I won't go into my long and miserable story, that continues to over a month now but suffice to say, STAY AWAY and find another place to go. I'm checking out Yelp now to find a better computer service location nearby. read more

In my experience, any business which you have to go to get something fixed (mechanics, repairs, tailors, etc) are usually somewhat crooked. Not these folks. They repaired my mac for a reasonable price, and said that if the issue reappeared I they'd take care of it for free. They also do any maintenance that doesn't require actually opening the computer for free. read more

Amazing!!! I had been calling around to get a quote on a new screen for my laptop and every other place wanted $125+ just for labor. Called him and he said $65 flat plus the price of the screen. Brought it in and was expecting to have to leave it overnight, which I was fine with. He took my computer in the back, brought out the replacement screen he had in stock which was a better screen then my broken one and even said, if you want you can order a universal/matte one online and I will install it and just charge you the installation fee. He even brought my broken one to me to show me the difference etc. The fact that he was not pushy at all and was very nice I went with the better screen for a little more. I was able to get the screen fixed in 20 mins top with a warranty for less then the price of just installation/labor at most places. This place is very clean, set up very nice, and have all their awards for outstanding service on the walls! I highly recommend going here to everyone and will definitely be a repeat customer if needed! Don't bother with other places. read more

I was have trouble with my Mac computer because it would shut off randomly. Instead of just going to a traditional apple store where I would have to wait a long time and have them tell me to turn it on and back off or reset it. I brought it here because I had heard good things from friends and thank goodness I did, they had very speedy service and solved my problem in less than 15 minutes because I was in a hurry to head back to college. Meh, get the free evaluation and grab the Drive Savers special discount and send out your hard drive to them who have a way better HD recovery. TS seems to be great at the simple stuff, broken screen, etc, but TS is completely unable to do the more advanced and "advanced" HD recovery, yea ok if files are bad enough that they can't do anything, understandable, but at the same time they can't fix simple things that have 100's of "how to fix" youtube videos. read more

The Apple "geniuses" have nothing on the guys who work at Tech Shield. The other night at home we had an entire glass of beer fall over and cover our MacBook Air that we've had barely a year. We instantly turned off the computer and tented it with a towel underneath. We used my girlfriend's hair dryer for about 20 min not knowing how else to handle. Our instinctual intuition was to of course call Apple. We spoke to a guy on the phone who first wanted to sell us on two more years of warranty coverage for $249.99 (not why we called buddy). All kidding aside, he suggested we make an appointment with our local Apple store, which we did. I had to work, so my girlfriend took our computer to the appointment and met with one of their "geniuses". He took the computer to the back and it wasn't more than 5 mins before he came back out with his diagnosis. He told her it was completely covered on the inside, and that they would be happy to send it in to be cleaned, but that it would cost us $750.00 for the cleaning. He then made mention that if there was damage there would be repair costs on top of that. Essentially, he was basically spelling out to my girlfriend that for only a few hundred more bucks we could just get a new MacBook Air. At that point he said if we did decide to buy a new computer from them, they could "try" and save the hard drive for $99.00. Thankfully, I remembered that Tech Shield is down the street from us. We figured we didn't have much to lose, so we took it in. Tech Shield did a free diagnostic, and said they would keep it over night and clean it as best they could. We were told they would only charge us if the cleaning resulted in the computer being fixed. We left, and received a call the very next day. Not only were they able to clean the inside of the MacBook, but they went ahead and replaced a few cables that had been affected by the liquid damage for only $140.00!!!!! I was blown away, they told us to come by and pick up the computer whenever we had the time. I can't say enough wonderful things about our experience with the guys at Tech Shield!! We have several Apple devices as well as a few older windows based laptops, and I can assure you from now on we are taking our business to Tech Shield. They exhibit gracious hospitality, honest diagnostics, superior computer knowledge, and they are not in business to screw people over. I highly recommend to anyone who reads this that if you have technical issues with your Apple computer go and see these guys before you go to the Apple Store. Thank goodness for Tech Shield! Wow! I'm thrilled. I was pretty much resigned to the idea that my macbook pro was a lost cause after spilling wine on it a few weeks ago. After a visit to the apple store and contacting several other mac specialist sites and getting a few (ridiculously expensive) quotes I took my laptop to tech shield without any expectations. Burak (sp?) called me a couple hours after I dropped it off on late Thursday afternoon and told me he thought it was fixable and what needed to be done for a fraction of the prices I had been told by others. It turns out I didn't need a whole new logic board like many others had told me. He was very friendly and positive, but I didn't want to get my hopes up too much in case it turned out that it wasn't repairable. By lunchtime Friday they called and said I could pick my laptop up! My only regret is that I didn't bring it in sooner because I would have relieved a lot of unnecessary stress! Thanks guys! read more

My ASUS all-in-one desktop stopped booting up after a Windows 10 update. I brought the unit in around 2pm and explained the problem. The owner seemed familiar with the issue I was having. He quoted me a price to fix the issue while preserving all of my data. He told me it would likely be ready the same day. I assumed that was optimistic. About 2 hours later I received a call that my computer was fixed and ready for pickup. I went in the store, my computer was on the counter, fully functioning. I was able to test it out, check for files, etc. All looked good. Compared to some prior experiences at other independent repair shops, this was about as painless as it goes. Clearly it helped that my problem appeared to be a common one, but nonetheless, I am impressed with the quick resolution and quality of work. Thanks! read more

Daniel is truly someone who has found his calling. He is the rare individual with a mix of exceptional knowledge and people skills. My computer was beyond and repair and Daniel, after doing everything he possibly could, was honest enough to tell me so. I was able to let go and move on. Tech Shield was amazing, if I could give them six stars I would. I brought in my 5 year old MacBook which was having what I thought were very serious problems and it might by on its death bed. Tech Shield could have called it DOA but instead of selling me a bunch of stuff I didn't need they solved the problem of a simple broken fan. Which they had in stock!!! They had a 5 year old fan in stock!! While the process did take two days, they called me both days and updated me. Then, not only did they solve the fan problem but they completely cleaned the inside of my laptop for free. My 5 year old mac is back to working like a dream, I thought I was going to have to spend 2 grand on a new computer. Instead, for $100 Tech Shield made my computer work like new. I wish I could give Tech Shield more than 5 stars! They did such an amazing job, and I couldn't be happier with the results. My 2012 Mac wasn't turning on (it was totally unresponsive) and I initially took it to Lapin Systems. Lapin told me the logic board needed replaced, and in addition to the $49 diagnostic fee, gave me a quote of $600 to repair the logic board. I found this completely overpriced, and decided to call around for more quotes. One of these was Tech Shield, who gave me a quote of $370, including labor, with no diagnostic fee. I was blown away by the difference, and took my laptop in for the repair right away. My computer was fixed within a day, and once they called to let me know, I asked if it would be possible to clear up some space on my hard drive, as it was almost completely full and I couldn't figure out why. They were able to clear up 45GB of space for me, and showed me how to easily check to see what exactly is taking up so much storage. This was a huge help, and they didn't even charge for helping me clear up the space. In total, Tech Shield was almost $300 cheaper than Lapin Systems, and their customer service was 1000x better, not to mention stellar results (they migrated all of my data, and I didn't lose any files). I can't recommend Tech Shield enough, definitely the premier computer repair shop in Chicago in my opinion!! read more

This place is a disaster. I don't know why I went to them for a second time, but I was in a hurry, and they are close by. First off, they will take at least a week longer to service your computer then the estimate. The second time I went they replaced a hard drive, but ruined the fan system in the process. The first time I did business with Tech Shield was a desperate moment. My computer died, and I urgently needed access to my documents. I found Tech Shield through Google. They were conveniently located. I grabbed my computer and RAN over there. They saved the day! I was amazed. And they didn't take advantage of my desperation. For a surprisingly fair price Lotfy (the owner) quickly pulled my hard drive and set me up so that I could access everything. Since then I've returned to him for other computer, and phone related problems. In fact I'm actually writing this review on a computer that he refurbished. Again, it was a great deal, and I have utter confidence in it. If you live on the North side, Lotfy at Tech Shield is the guy to go to. Skip that, wherever you live Lotfy at Tech Shield is the guy to go to. I now live in New York and to the extent that I possibly can, I send my equipment to Lotfy, or wait until I'm visiting Chicago. After reading reviews on Yelp, I took my laptop into Tech Shield because it was shutting down every five minutes. The owner was super nice and was pretty confident it was the cooling fan. Unfortunately, it turned out to be the motherboard and it made more sense to just buy a new computer. I was incredibly impressed with how kind and helpful Daniel, the owner, was. He had no problem spending time with me to call my computer manufacturer. He also took time to suggest the best computer brands for my next purchase. The best part? He didn't charge me for having put in a new cooling fan because they "didn't fix the problem." I would recommend anyone to go here because they are smart and respectful to their customers. The only issue I had was that they didn't call me to update me on the status of my computer while it was there and I had to keep calling to check in. Otherwise - these guys are great! Bonus: Daniel transferred all of the files from my old computer to my new one and even asked if it would be ok if he put a good anti-virus software on my new computer! Um - WOW!!!! Great service. Love this place, they saved me. We downloaded a virus that corrupted a number of system files. Thought the PC was a goner but they scanned it, reinstalled the operating system, backed up all of our files and gave us a totally virus free perfectly running and like new computer. Love them! where do i start with how awesome this place is!? I took my MacBook pro to apple because there was some accidental water damage and they told me it would be $755 to repair even tho my computer would still turn on when plugged in and basically still worked. I decided to get a second opinion as i felt $755 was a bit steep. I brought it to tech shield and the gentleman was super friendly and said he would look it over and call me back with an assessment. Not even two hours later he called me up and told me what needed to be repaired. He quoted me at $380 plus tax! half what i would have paid at apple! not even two hours later he called me back and told me the repairs had be completed and my laptop was ready to be picked up! He told me that the keyboard was fine other than the power button and said he would replace it but honestly didn't think it was necessary as it would cost another 180 just for one button.Love the honesty.Moral of the story is DON'T GO TO APPLE if you have any kind of accidental damage because your apple care won't cover it and all they will try to do is screw you over. Great job Tech Shield ill will most definitely be using you for future computer repair. read more
