The owner, Alex, is a nice dude, but a poor communicator. My laptop was having crashes, and I dropped it off in early June for troubleshooting/diagnosis. I called after several weeks and he promised he'd have the problem diagnosed within the next couple days and call me back. Several additional weeks went by and I called again with the same response, and then once more a few weeks later- a total of 2 months of wait time without any progress or evidence that anything was done at all. I eventually gave up and got my laptop back myself to look at. Googling my error messages indicated that my RAM was faulty, and after replacing the RAM (a 15-minute procedure), my laptop works fine. It took me ~30 minutes of total active time to troubleshoot and solve this problem that I had previously waited 2 months for the owner to fix. I'd guess that Alex was overcommitted with fixing other machines to focus on mine, which is fine if he told me a realistic estimate (i.e. "I'm really busy right now, but check back in a month and I'll give you an update). Instead I got drip-fed inaccurate timeline estimates. Overall, I find it difficult to reccomend going to this business to get your problem fixed unless you have a really easy software issue to diagnose/fix on the spot. read more

Before bringing my Acer laptop in here, I had shipped it to the manufacturer for repair and was hit with a total BS $1200 quote. waited over a week for them to look at a computer with water damage. never heard back so went in to get it. can't confirm what they tried to do to fix the computer and when I called, the guy pulled up my report number and repeated exactly what I told them when I dropped it off. it was my fault for dropping it off without a timeline. just took the $90 fee and can't confirm what tests the did to try to fix the problem. computer would most likely still be sitting in their pile if I didn't drop in to get it. first time leaving a yelp review. this place is awful and would not recommend them to anyone. read more

Took computer in to the Glenview store. Stefan was courteous, sociable and concerned. He told us we might have the computer back the next day. It was not ready but he phoned to advise us of that fact. The second day he called with questions in an effort to pinpoint the problem. He found the problem, fixed it and we got the computer back within 48 hours of delivering it to him. I expected to be charged far more than I was. I was impressed by some aspects, but then disappointed in one major way. Customer service: Great! I spoke with a couple of people over the course of 3 phone calls. I don't remember who I spoke with over the phone, but after much troubleshooting on my own, I called to ask for their opinion. Obviously, not much could be determined over the phone without them seeing my unit, but they patiently answered my questions, were courteous, and I never felt rushed. Service: Easy drop-off, and you enter all your information electronically. Quick and easy. Unfortunately, the price for fixing my unit was not worth the cost, so I ended up just paying the diagnostic fee. When I went to pick up my unit, there was damage to the top of my laptop which were not there prior to me dropping them off. read more

I came to ComputerLand upon a friend's recommendation when my Dell laptop would not power on. The repair solution that Dell offered was expensive and would take 2 weeks to process. I could not be without my laptop for that long. Alex was very upfront - he explained what might have gone wrong, gave me a possible solution that would cost $90 to see if he can solve my issue in 10 minutes. He also explained if that solution did not work, I maybe better off purchasing a new laptop. I was lucky that his possible solution did work! I got my laptop back in 10 minutes and it cost me less than 1/3 of what Dell has quoted me. Alex also gave me the "do not do this going forward" to avoid a similar issue. I appreciated my interaction with Alex - he was there to help his customers. I have no idea how I was not familiar with ComputerLand before! i needed to replace the screen on my MacBook Pro. It is several years old and Apple has stopped supporting it, and spare parts were no longer available. Apple offered zero dollars as trade in allowance on a new similar feature, now costing about $2,500. YIKES The service man at the Halstead Street location diagnosed the issue, found a like new screen/lid on line, bought it and installed it promptly, all at a fair price. Chicago ComputerLand saved my ass when my trusty-but-aged Dell Optiplex (the Millennium Falcon of desktops) decided to shit the bed while I was deadline. They recovered all my critical files the same day, put them onto a laptop I had waiting on deck for this kind of event, and expedited the repair on the desktop. Worked fast, and gave good advice, with fair and upfront pricing. Just like if you've got a beloved classic car in the shop, or, I dunno, a kid or a pet in the emergency room or something, you've got to stay in constant communication with whomever is trying to save them, and they were cool with that. I have no hesitation recommending these guys, and would definitely use them again if ever in the same situation. As a response to your comment about "If RAM was the issue you would have come in sooner" I work full time, and I tried to figure out the issue myself because I simply didn't have money for the repair until recently. An issue with the RAM is exactly what caused the BSOD in the first place. So yes, it is directly related and should have been caught in the initial "diagnostic" I brought it in thinking it was a driver error, but that shouldn't have influenced the diagnostic that was supposedly run? The quoted price I was wrong on and thought it was going to be much more the way I heard it over the phone! I apologize for that. I had initially brought in my custom built computer because it had BSOD and got stuck in a boot loop. I was told that there was a diagnostic fee ($70) but if you opted to go with their service the fee would be waived. I got a call about 5 days later to tell me they needed to install Windows again. I believe I was told $130. At that point I knew it was a little steep just for a fresh install, but I didn't have my windows copy so I just went with the price and sucked it up. Immediately after getting it home my games were crashing and I was still getting BSOD's. I tried to get to the bottom of it myself and I suspected a hardware issue, but wasn't entirely sure. I brought it back, but was kind of upset being that last time I was told there was a diagnostic done and anything faulty would have been picked up on. obviously it wasn't.. I was told it was the RAM this time. Which confirmed my own suspicions. I was quoted $40 and $120 for 4 4gb sticks, which is kind of absurd as I can buy 2 8gb sticks for around $80 and installing RAM is incredibly simple. In short, I left being charged $70 for the entire diagnostic fee for something that should have been picked up in the initial diagnostic anyways. I strongly recommend going elsewhere, particularly if you don't have a ton of computer knowledge. These are the type of people that will rob you if you didn't know better. read more

Don't go to this place. Alex is not honest. He advertised $120 for labor for installing the screen for a Mac. I called for cost to install the MacBook Pro A1707 screen. He quoted $140. When I went to the store, he raised to $155 and said it's 15", he thought it was 13" even I said A1707 over the phone. I approved the cost. But later found out the screen I provided did not work. Then he offered to sell me the screen for $450. I approved the total of $662.15 with part, labor and tax. I was out of town and sent my son-in-law to pick up the Mac. Alex said the $450 part was not good. He placed the $499 part instead. My son-in-law called me. I did not agree to pay for the extra because it's without my approval. I only agree to pay the quoted $662.15. Alex Ok'ed. When my son-in-law got home and showed me the final cost was $688.64. I was surprised and asked Alex. He said the extra $26.49 was the credit card charge which was not mentioned or on the quote sheet. My son-in-law paid for it without knowing. Alex refused to refund the extra. Brought my gaming PC here to be fixed. They kept me informed at every turn (and there were several turns, since the problem turned out to be different than we thought, and then after fixing the issue, we had yet another issue with BIOS finding the OS.) At each stage, they took a day to diagnose the problem or fix the problem, and they were very responsive when I had questions. I felt the price was more than fair, and I got back my PC back working great. They also did something I appreciate. I'm a bit of a nut about privacy and have some client data on my hard drive, so I was worried about leaving the PC. They removed the hard drives and gave them to me when I dropped off the PC, so I never lost control of my data. When I returned, they popped the hard drives back in and checked to make sure everything was copacetic. I appreciated the extra mile to meet my privacy needs. read more

Wow!!! I've been an Apple owner for years. After I spilled coffee on my Macbook keyboard, I knew that Apple would likely make me pay for another laptop, considering the cost of in-house repair is astronomically high. So I looked around, found this gem on Yelp, and took my laptop to Alex that very day. He explained how much it would cost for the water damage and the keyboard replacement. I was amazed that Alex was able to get my Macbook to turn on! He had also replaced the keyboard but found that it would still not work. He told me that he could replace the logic board to fix the keyboard but added it would be too expensive to be worthwhile. Instead, he recommended that I get a wireless keyboard. Despite having spent his precious time and resources, he did not charge for the keyboard replacement, and he helped me set up my wireless keyboard when I came to pick up my revived laptop. Alex and Aldi are not clear and fast, they do not charge extar for gereat service. I have had multiple issues with my laptop and taht have lawasy been very clear on what is a simple job, moderately difficult, or "we need to hold onto the computer until we can figure out what the issue is." Very happy with the service I recently received from Alex and Aldi. I have an Imac with Bootcamp on it so I could run windows. It had Windows 7 and I wanted to upgrade to Windows 10. I was really concerned that the upgrade would blow out some of the programs and I would have to buy them and re-install them. But that didn't happen. Brought the machine in, they turned it around in less that 24 hours. Brought the machine home, all programs were present and working perfectly. Could not have asked for more.
