This is the worst experience I have ever had with a business of any kind. A few days ago, I left a review outlining the horrible customer service I had experienced over the past two months here (the original text of the review is copied below, for reason I will explain), and shortly thereafter received a call from the store. I ignored it as the last several phone calls with them had been completely unproductive and I wanted the next discussion to be in person so I could pick up my computer and deal with them once and for all. The manager then contacted me from a personal phone number which I only answered because I mistook it for a call from my doctor's office I was expecting. He was very nice at that time, told me that he only has two staff members right now and that one of them is soon to be fired, and promised I would get the 50% refund. He then asked me to take down my review. I said that I would update my review upon receiving my refund but would not remove it because other customers deserve to be informed. He said that I needed to remove it because "it's really hurting [his] business". I said that I was sorry but that I work from home and not having a computer for two months really hurt my business, and that asking me to remove the review violates the Yelp (etc) terms of service. I said I did not want to continue the conversation said that I would be coming in the next day (today) to get my money and computer. This is where it gets TRULY WILD. Midday today I got an email that someone had logged into MY YELP ACCOUNT using my computer but with an unrecognized IP address in zip code 60657 (I have a different Chicago zip and was not using Yelp on any devices). I changed my password, and then got emails that someone ELSE had changed my password and that someone was attempting to access MY PERSONAL GMAIL ACCOUNT as well. I checked my yelp and the review was deleted. I called the store to ask if they were in my yelp account and was told "ma'am, you don't understand, we really needed to delete that review" (ie YES). I went to the store to get my computer and DEMAND a full refund and was told that I was "acting crazy" and "clearly have issues" despite not yelling, screaming, crying, or personally attacking any employees. Another customer in the store even came over without prompting and insisted that I was behaving appropriately and that the employee shouldn't talk to me like that. To make a long story short, it was one of the worst experiences of my life and while I did get my computer back I was left with NO REFUND WHATSOEVER after the company failed to perform the repair, failed to communicate on the status of my computer over the course of TWO MONTHS, repeatedly lied to me and changed their stories, and then violated my personal privacy by accessing my personal yelp and email accounts and making unauthorized changes. STAY AWAY ***ORIGINAL REVIEW: While traveling for new years my fiancée spilled water on my macbook pro. I shut it down immediately and placed it in front of a fan for 24 hours. Afterwards the computer itself seemed to function but the screen intermittently wouldn't turn on. I brought it to Tech Shield upon return from my trip for repairs. They sent it home about a week later, on January 11th, saying it was fixed. I was charged $360 which I paid in cash and was told there would be a 90-day warranty for any further issues. When I got home the screen would not turn on. I called Tech Shield and explained, they had me do some special reset which caused the screen to work but only when plugged in. If the computer was closed it would not turn back on again. They said it would need to come in for further repairs. They then proceeded to keep my computer for TWO MONTHS, failing to follow up with me EVER. I would call every week or so for an update and be told completely different things each time, including blatant lies and manipulative claims. They would often say "we will follow up with you later today" and then weeks would go by with no call or update. They kept changing their claims as to what had been done so far, what still needed to be done, etc. Finally I said enough and that I wanted to pick up the computer as is. They said they would give me a REFUND of half of what I paid for all my trouble dealing with them. I repeated and clarified TWICE on the phone that I would be receiving a refund. When I called to make sure my partner could pick up the machine instead of me I was told it would only be a CREDIT for a future repair, not a refund, and also that they are not able to fix my computer and it needs a new display and there aren't any available. I am furious that I paid almost $400 to NOT have my computer fixed and was without a computer for MONTHS as a result of their careless poor communication. I am also upset that I was told I would be getting a refund and now am being told I will not. I wish I had used a credit card so I could file a chargeback. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. read more

BEWARE! My experience with Tech Shield was HORRIBLE! These guys are unprofessional and disrespectful! BEWARE! I brought my MacBook to TechShield in order to repair my CPU Fan. I had bought a new fan, they charged me $80 for installation, and the fan was working just fine. Two days afterwards, the keyboard started acting weird, the lower case was coming off, I could feel my hard drive spinning, I had an overall felling that the MacBook was not as tight as it used to be. Four days later, I noticed the CD ROM drive would not accept DVDs or a CDs, anymore. After checking the Macbook in details, I noticed that the keyboard was slightly elevated in the CD ROM drive area. They had clearly mishandled or damaged something during the repair and I decided to bring it back. Daniel first told me it was probably just a screw that needed to be pushed back in. For $80, I thought they should have put all the screws back in in the first place, but... Turns out it wasn't a screw. They had broken my CD drive, would not acknowledge it, implying that my CD drive was not working in the first place, but they still offered to install a new one for free as long as I bought the part. Since they offered to do it for free, they obviously knew they had done something wrong to it in the first place, right? I obviously refused to give them one more dollar, and was frankly scared they could damage something else if they opened my MacBook again. Anyway, I showed up at the store, asked for a refund (denied), and Burak (the owner apparently), told me he would fix it. An hour later, the computer was "fixed", they had changed a "tiny part" in the drive, but not replace the drive (why they wanted me to pay for a new drive two hours earlier is a mystery!) I tried it once at the store, it seemed to worked just fine. I tried a second time at home and the drive was not accepting CDs again. I emailed them, asked for a refund (I wouldn't want them to open my macbook for anything again!) or told them I would post a bad review. Burak - the owner - replied to me with a disrespectful email, accusing me of some sort of scam, claiming that I was using the wrong CDs, that the CD rom drive was working at the store, and above all threatening to post a bad review on me! (what a joke! Business posting reviews on clients!) Turns out I brought my computer to the Genius Bar this morning. Apparently, these guys totally screwed up my computer! Some screws were missing, the CD rom drive was not aligned properly etc... The guy wouldn't believe I had brought the computer to a repair store. He thought I had done it myself! I already talked to FOUR different people who have had HORRIBLE experiences with these guys. Nobody should step out of a repair shop with more problems on their computer than when they stepped in! I now have to pay an additional $250 to get my MacBook back to normal! read more

Run as far away from this place as you can! My old functioning computer which was working just fine with Windows Vista suddenly failed to boot up after i uninstalled McAfee. I took them my original operating disc and I gave "Lofty" specific instructions. I told him I wanted him to get the system back up and running. I specifically told him to call me if he could not do that for any reason. The next day he called and said the computer had been fixed. When I picked it up he told me that he "upgraded" my operating system to Windows 7 with no additional charge. He also claimed that he installed a new copy of Office and he backed up all my files. When I booted the computer up at home, there was no Office on the system. I called over there, Lofty remoted into my system and said it was "weird" that Office had simply "disappeared." I reiterated to him that I had not authorized him to do change my operating system., and that he should have called me first. The situation then went from bad to worse. All of my programs were gone, and I could not find the product key to re-install Office 2010. After calling Microsoft and spending another $40 for a new key, the tech there installed the suite, but he could not find my backed up outlook files. Microsoft advised me to contact Tech Shield and ask them to find those backed up files. Long story short - Lofty did not back up anything - he changed my operating system without my permission, and he claimed that all my files were corrupt. What he failed to realize is that I am not an idiot. I have built computers, and I know what happened could have been avoided if he knew what he was doing. If he had simply called me instead of deciding to give me the "upgrade" I never asked for I could have taken it somewhere else. First he told me that he had all of my backed up files on one of his computers and that I should just bring my computer in. But once I got there with my computer, he denied saying that, and he claimed that I had tampered with my own computer to make him look bad. I don't doubt that once upon a time this was a reputable business, but not any more. The one and only employee there is rude, lacking the most basic of customer service skills and he is dishonest. He "lost" over 3,000 emails, all of my contacts, and all of my programs. It will cost me more money to get my computer back to where it was. Hopefully my credit card company will remedy the situation so that I can start over again with a repair shop that knows what they're doing. read more

It was about a year ago, I took my computer to them when I lived in Chicago. I had read all the great reviews on yelp so I was expecting really high quality service. When I walked in, Daniel greeted me warmly and he was very nice. I dropped my computer off, and Daniel told me I would receive a phone call shortly with a diagnosis. I waited a whole week before I called back, he said they ordered the parts -without my approval and they said it would be $280.00 for a motherboard, and some $80.00 for what they said was a bios update. I approved, waited two more weeks and called back, they said their supplier did not have the part in stock, so it would be another week. About a month after I dropped my computer there, I picked it up. I was STILL happy actually, despite the whole month they took to repair my computer. I mean they fixed my computer and I am a sucker for friendly people -which Daniel definitely was. Then through a few strange twists of fate, I met someone in school who happened to be friends with the owner (Whose name apparently is Barack), and I learned that their "supplier" is ebay. So I found out that the motherboard I was charged $280.00 for was purchased for about $40.00 on ebay. Also, the bios update I was charged $80.00 for -never happened. I found out that this is basically a made-up thing they add on people's bills. So if you ever paid for one, you didn't really get one. I don't know what to say really. I feel terrible about having brought my business to them, and I am shocked that behind the looks of a polite and sincere man Daniel was such a sneaky and dishonest person. read more

I recently had my first major computer issue - my hard drive had crashed on my laptop and I had never backed up my files before. I heard about Daniel and Tech Shield through a friend who had spoken extremely highly of these guys. I called Daniel and words cannot describe how impressed I am with him, his firm, the service, and the overall results. Daniel went out of his way to pick up my laptop because I had to work late. Then he called me every few days to give me updates. Not only did he install a new hard drive on my computer, but he also managed to recover all of my files, pictures, music, etc. Literally a decade of information - around 40 GB worth. I had called almost 5 or 6 other places, and they were ready to charge me thousands of dollars to recover the data and fix the computer. Tech Shield charged a fraction of this. They could have told me anything (I'm not the most Tech savvy), but a few days into picking up my computer Daniel was honest and said that he just plugged my computer into a data recovery machine, and that he has only spent a few minutes of "real work" on the computer, so he said it would be unfair to charge anything more than for a few minutes of labor?!! I couldn't believe how honest he was. Even after the computer was fixed, he followed up and he continues to act as a consultant for IT issues for me. I had the best experience with these guys. The service at Tech Shield is pretty unbeatable. I live in Hyde Park and the commute to bring my computer to them was well worth it! The computer repair shop that was close to me was going to charge me 45 dollars just to diagnose the problem, not even to fix it. Needless to say, I thought there might be a better deal out there, and there is. The people at Tech Shield will look at the problem, diagnose it and quote the price for you--they won't work on your computer without telling you how much it will be so you're in for no surprises. I came in with a half diagnosed (by myself) problem with a fan on my laptop and Marat was incredibly helpful. He walked me through all the possible things that might be wrong with it--starting with nothing, ending with a replaced fan and explained it all to me in a friendly, easy-to-understand way, not trying to scare me into paying for services that I did not need and actually assuring me that my computer was going to be fine. My problem ended up being a quick fix, they called me as soon as it was done and ready for pick up and didn't charge me because it only took them 15 minutes to fix--which is incredibly generous and just shows that they're there to help you, not rip you off. Knowledgeable, competent, friendly service is really the best thing you can ask for when you're bringing in the machine that pretty much runs your life for service. As long as I live in Chicago, these guys will be my go-to for computer needs. read more

I paid $180 on 12/23 for a Macbook Pro Screen repair at Tech Shield, the repair was just for the glass insert and not the LCD. When I came to pick up my computer, $180 was paid to Tech Shield, regardless of my computer being quoted $60 over the initial attempt. Upon pickup my laptop had a broken camera, caused by the repair, dents on the middle sides, and scratches on both left and right middle sides. Upon my request that they fix their botched job, they insisted it was my fault and I should have paid $700 for a full computer insert. (What?!)I was very troubled that I contacted the owner of Tech Shield addressing this matter, and he started blaming this matter on me, the customer. He blamed the scratches, dents, and broken camera on me and not the technician who still did not fix my computer after one attempt being brought in again. My MacBook Pro that has dents on the left side and scratches on both sides of the computer is now not going to be fixed and will be permanently damaged. DO NOT take your computer here to be fixed for any repairs. This was a Christmas present that went horribly wrong. I have never been treated in this way at all after I paid money for a service. read more

Having my desktop act up on me forced me to realize that nothing is secured rather being online or offline as well. I could make sense of why my computer would keep annoying me with advertising pop up's, I decided to take my computer to Best-buy, learning real quick that I was just a number to them waiting in line; I decided to turn around and leave due to unprofessional management. On my way back home I spotted a particular computer repair shop called Tech Shield, so I figured to give them a try. A really kind guy called Burak assisted me with my P.C issue, very friendly and professional he assured me that I would be getting a call from them within minutes and if not a couple of hours. Sure enough by the time I got home I have received a message from them telling what was wrong with my P.C and what the cost to repair it was. At this point I was under the assumption that I was going to paid big bucks, to my surprise I got a real good deal and told I was able to pick up P.C the very next day in the morning. This is definitely a five star service experience I had with Tech Shield, thank you so much for being attentive. read more

These guys are awesome, and a class act. I will now tell you my story: I deleted everything on my wife's iPod touch. 'Cause I'm dumb like that and a bit of a luddite. But I dig research so I figured out that there MIGHT be a chance that it was recoverable. I brought it in to Daniel after the research and he said my idea was sound. [For you curious techies, basically: jailbreak the ipod touch, launch it as an ftps, then run the data recovery software to try and get back all the important information.] It did not work, but not for lack of trying. Daniel was really good about keeping me updated about what he had tried, and how the progress was coming along. It took longer than either of us originally expected but that is largely because he was tenacious in his attempt to get me out of the doghouse I'd gotten myself into. So ultimately- I so thoroughly erased that iPod that they were unable to bring it back from the dead. But I am so convinced of their quality of service I will soon be asking them to install a new hard drive in an old laptop of mine. I'd highly recommend checking them out. read more

Last week I brought my computer over to Tech Shield because it wasn't going on the internet. When I walked into the store I was greeted by Daniel. He checked in my computer and told me he would call me as soon he figured out what the problem was along with a price estimate. One day later I got a call from him explaining what needs to be done to my computer and he gave me a very reasonable price. I approved the work and about 5hrs later I got another phone call from Daniel saying that my computer was finished and it was ready for pickup. When I went to pick up my computer Daniel explained to me once again the work that he did to my computer and also gave me some ways to keep this problem and other problems from happening again. I have absolutely no computer knowledge and he broke down everything I needed to know in lay mans terms!!! That makes me feel so much better and less like an idiot. I absolutely hate tech guys that try to appear smarter than you. I would highly recommand Tech Shield to anyone with computer issues. read more

There are a few things in this world that a girl needs to feel secure about: an honest mechanic, a dentist with no qualms about drugging you into submission, a great hairdresser, and a good computer store. Until recently I had everything except the last one. But, now I do. The guys, at Tech Shield, went above and beyond with repairing my desktop and laptop. I would have been completely happy with just the work we agreed upon, but while they were in my system they did so much more - even threw in fixing the CD burner when they discovered that it didn't work properly. It's obvious the guys love what they do. The price was completely reasonable. I've had less work done for more cost. The Tech guys are very talkative - they want to make sure you understand everything that they have done and more, so don't plan on picking up your PC when you're in a big hurry. They strike me as very thoughtful, honest and nice guys. Ah, my life is complete. I have finally found my computer guys. read more

In recent months, my ASUS ultrabook laptop computer was acting strangely: unable to even start due to some Windows configuration/update issues. Frustrated and desperate, I was seeking for a place to service it. While I never entered the Tech Shield store, I was always aware of its location for the past several years, as I often drove past it on Broadway. As soon as I did enter the store for the first time earlier this month, I was greeted warmly by Burak. After explaining my computer difficulties to him, he easily and quickly diagnosed the problem, and promised to have my computer ready for pickup the following afternoon. I am most impressed by Tech Shield's prompt service and keen knowledge and expertise. Their attention to customer service resonates and impresses. Burak is very friendly and trustworthy, and his dog helped calm my anxiety. I will definitely choose Tech Shield for any future computer-related issues or problems that I encounter! read more

I work from home, so when my computer is malfunctioning, I am basically dead in the water. That happened today. I booted up to discover the card that gives my laptop wifi capabilities was dead. I rushed over to Tech Shield, and could not be happier with the service. Lotfy immediately stopped what he was doing to help me out. He patiently listened to me, identified the problem, and told me what I could expect. Although he surmised the repair may take up to a few days to complete, he called me within 15 minutes to report that he did in fact have the replacement part I needed in stock, and I could come get the laptop in 45 minutes.
