I brought in an external hard drive that the Apple Store said couldn't be fixed without the use of a data recovery service. Those places charge between $100 and $2,400, with no guarantee that you'll get all of your information back the way it was before the hard drive stopped working. I went to Tech Shield after my trip to the Apple Store, figuring they might know something the Apple "genius" wouldn't, but after keeping the hard drive for a day, they said it was "dead" and recommended a data recovery service just like Apple did. Well, it turns out that a $75 piece of software called Data Rescue II was able to retrieve the data. Yes, some of it was corrupted, but I doubt a data recovery service would've done any better, and definitely not for $75. To their credit, Tech Shield didn't charge me anything for their time, and they're friendly guys, but it's disappointing that they didn't mention anything about Data Rescue II, or Disk Warrior, or FileSalvage. Then again, neither did the Apple "genius," and the software is right there in the store. read more

I called and Lofty was able to get my computer screen fixed on the same day and in LESS THAN AN HOUR. I couldn't believe it. And the price is super affordable , ( I also called 6 different places that yelp recommended and this was the least expensive. He quoted and charged me half of what apple would have charged me. I took my macbook pro and iPad there for repairs. My 4 year old macbook was running really slow and I had taken it to the Apple store where they recommended I buy a new laptop. I decided to bring it to Tech Shield, where they ran tests and saw my hard rive was failing. They replaced my hard drive and now it is working great! With the iPad, all I needed was the screen replaced because it was shattered and they did this for $100 but it would have been more if I hand't been buying the new hard drive as well. The reason I took away 1 star was because the day I dropped it off the guy that was working there was a little rude and when I asked how long he thought he would take he just said "whenever it's ready." When I tried calling the same guy was also short and not helpful. When I came to pick it up, the man I dealt with was very pleasant and helpful. I brought my flash drive in for data recovery after I snapped the stem (it was still attached just loose). They ran a free diagnostic and told me it looked like the points just needed to be soldered (no guarantee it'll work). Next day I get the bad news the device is still not being recognized by the computer. Deflated and exhausted from anxiety, I resigned to the fact I would have to send the drive to a data recovery lab, and prices began at $300 for the first gb. Luckily, another computer repair shop in the area called me (I called for estimates) and suggested I give them a try (nothing to lose w/ a free diagnostic). According to the new shop, Techshield, and I quote, "didn't do anything to your drive... they just opened it. There's no soldering marks and the points aren't connected... looks like they didn't try anything. Hope you didn't pay for it." I was given a fair price at the other shop based on estimates around town/web, and since my flash drive needed rewiring. If it's true that Techshield didn't attempt to fix it... I'm pissed; and it gives some credence to why the tech guy couldn't find my flash drive when I went to go pick it up... if he had previously worked on it, he should have known where he put it. An expensive lesson... and I'm glad the other shop helped me more than Techshield. I know better to back up my shit, why I only backed up one folder and not the entire drive, I'll never know. Just because one is in grad school doesn't mean they have common sense. ------- updated response to private message. Very understandable why your shop did not do the repair and how physical damage is not repaired at your shop. However, my rating is based on the fact that I was ::told:: that that your shop could do a physical repair and try soldering the USB drive (otherwise, I would not have chosen your shop since that was my ONLY problem). More so, the fact that I was ::told:: that soldering WAS conducted and yielded no effect on the drive and needed to try the data recovery lab, is why the rating is low. Since there was a miscommunication on your part, fix it. I knew I had a physical problem with my USB drive and was only pursuing repair shops that could do a physical repair... A paramount detail like that is not something I would misunderstand by a shop that doesn't do physical repairs. read more

I needed to get my MacBook Pro screen replaced and had one of the employees tell me it was going to be $180 or $190. So I take it in to get replaced and they tell me it'll take 3-4 days. It took 3 weeks for them to tell me that something was wrong with their replacement screen and that the compatible screen cost was $275 plus tax. They have a great service where a field tech comes out to your home for just $20.00 and the diagostic is free . My old hard drive became corrupted and so I needed a newer fast drive. It was installed for me and very reasonably priced for the part and labor. Also installed was WINDOWS 10 and a new version of Office Pro complimentary. Everything was hooked up again to my tower, and they made sure all was working perfectly icluding my WI-FI and my printer before leaving. Twice - TWICE - Burak has brought my wee macbook from death to life. In January, I was working late on a job at home, fell asleep while working, and was woken up by the sound of my beer glass tipping over..on my laptop! I came in the next morning, sad and blue, and Daniel greeted me with sympathy and care. The next day, I met Burak who showed me the insides of my laptop while explaining exactly what happened and what he did. And the price? extraordinary! I was stunned (happily) Did I mention, they have 4 computers for clients to use while their equipment is being serviced?! 2 weeks ago, my laptop died while I was on a job. (no spillage this time :-p ) I brought it in, Daniel again greeted me with the warmth of a good friend and explained to me Burak is the house mac specialist. Burak called me later that day with the grim news I may have a dead mac this time. 2 days later, he calls and leaves this vm "well...it looks like I did it again. Your mac is working again!" Again, he showed me the insides of my laptop to explain exactly what "killed" it. He was careful to warn me, this might be a short-term revival so I better take precautions when doing work at home with my little babymac. I called after sitting outside of some business that turned out to only be a drop-off place that was going to charge me $150 and asked if my flash could be repaired that day. My gaming laptop suffered some awful physical damage - almost exclusively on the inside. These guys are the best! Honest, quick, and reasonably priced. My Mac Book Pro decided it had enough one day. My husband and I tried everything, but it kept giving me the "restricted access" sign every time I tried to boot it up. I live around the corner from this store, and had passed it a zillion times, but never had the reason to go in. After reading other yelper's reviews, i decided to see what they could do. I took my laptop in, and they asked what the problem was. I made the "restricted access" sign in the air, and they knew exactly what to do. They ran tests, called me later that night, and told me my hard drive was fried, which I had kind of already figured based on my google searches. Anyway, they laid out the options, and noted a $47 difference between replacing the hard drive with a 500 GB versus a 1TB. I went with the 1 TB, and before taxes the entire repair only cost me $297. This continues to blow my mind as I know apple "geniuses" or whatever would have had a field day screwing me over. Even better, i was able to pick up my computer the next day. Unfortunately they could not save the stuff from my old hard drive, but gave me a referral to a service who could give me a free estimate to do so. And just to top this off, I don't know if it is what they always do... but they installed microsoft office on my new hard drive so I could get right back to doing what I was doing. I was floored that they did this, because I was already checking prices for microsoft office and wishing I still had a student discount. Also, Mr. Bean, the little dog that probably secretly runs the place, is adorable. I love this neighborhood, and love places that have a sort of "office pet" running around. It says a lot about a business to me, and the people that run it. Obviously, not in food establishments... but you know what I mean. My Dell computer had been having multiple problems for months, and nothing seemed to fix it and no one was able to fix it. So I took it to Tech Shield. They wiped everything clean and put it back on, and my computer ran noticeably faster, but it didn't fix the most annoying problem, which was that my computer would be connected to my wifi but the webpages wouldn't come up. I called Tech Shield and they said to bring it back in again, and he replaced my wireless card, which fixed the problem FINALLY! I brought 4 damaged Macs in for service/repair thinking that I was going to end up being in a financial mess due to all the parts and time needed to fix them. The fiancé was "cleaning" the office, the desk broke and my beautiful 27" iMac fell to the floor. What a fantastic experience I had with these guys. Took my laptop in to have them fix some physical damage to the hinges. Come time find out I have a very rare laptop, and the part needed was discontinued by the manufacturer. I ended up purchasing a parts computer off of ebay and brought it to them. After staying open and extra 15 minutes past closing time because I was running late, they gave me a discount to do the work because it was such a hassle to get the part. I recently started a new job where I work remotely from home. This means that I am responsible for maintenance of my own desktop that I use for work. I'm so fortunate to have found Lotfy and his company within walking distance of my home. My desktop was running very slow, and I thought I needed to add more RAM to boost the speed. But I'm no tech guru, so I took a chance and took my desktop to Tech Shield. Lotfy quickly recommended that the better solution to my slow operating speed was to install a solid-state drive to replace my hard drive because that would boost the operating speed several hundred times compared to just adding more RAM chips. He was absolutely right! As he put it, comparing the performance of SSD versus HD is like comparing a Ferrari versus a bicycle lol. So Lotfy ordered and installed the new drive within a week and even re-installed my Win10 OS at no charge. Well, that would be the end of my review, except that my backup computer that I also use for work started giving me problems soon after my first visit to Lotfy. This time I was having problems getting my monitor to pick up the signal from my backup desktop. So I took my backup desktop to Lotfy and within a day he diagnosed the problem and offered me two solutions: an expensive solution and a less expensive alternative. I'm glad he was so honest to tell me the pros and cons of each solution because I am on a budget when it comes to spending money. After I selected the less expensive solution, Lotfy was able to fix my monitor problem in a day, and he told me I had not connected my monitor to the graphics card port, so for the longest time, I had not taken full advantage of the graphics capabilities of the card. He even gave me a free DVI-D converter plug so I could connect my monitor to the correct port. AND on top of that he re-installed Win 10 OS and MS Office on the backup computer as well at no charge! Oh, and, yes, since I was already in his shop, I told him to install an SSD in my backup computer cuz I got addicted to the speed of that drive on my primary computer lol! He ordered and installed the SSD again within less than a week. Finally, one last note. . .my computer troubles did not stop there. My primary computer later suffered a cooling fan failure (That computer is at least 10 years old, so I'm not surprised that thge fan broke.). Lotfy was able to fix that problem same day, if I remember correctly. And as luck would have it, my keyboard for my backup computer failed on me, but Lotfy was kind enough to give me one of his spare keyboards for free cuz I'm becoming one of his regular customers lol! He's awesome - very quick, friendly service and he won't sell you services or stuff you don't need. This place is GREAT! About six months ago I took my laptop here. Daniel told me that the hard drive crashed. He replaced it and it crashed again. He ended up replacing it 4 times... No extra fee. Finally, I just got rid of it because it wasn't going to work anymore. Great service! I had been to this place before. Service i had was decent again. In my first visit i needed data recovery, which was well done with no problems. They also ran virus and performance check. This time i went for some repair. My computers fan was making noise and it needed a change. Burak was very helpful, explanatory and priced the service very affordable. There were some small software issues to be pointed, which he fixed free of charge. I was expecting it to take a couple of days. But unlike other repair shops, it was very quick. He said it should take no longer than half an hour, so i went to next door to grab a coffee, while waiting for my computer. I freaked out and called Geek Squad--I didn't know of any other places and I couldn't access internet due to the virus. I called Geek Squad and they quoted me $199.99 regardless of virus type. I thought that was hefty but was feeling desperate so I headed to Best Buy. Mid-way there, I came to my senses and thought to myself... Yelp can help! I decided that I could live one evening sans computer and decided to yelp it up at work the next day. I'm glad I did. I was a big fan of this place for many years, but in the last couple have had some bad experiences with them. I am not giving a 1 star rating because one of the people who works there has remained very helpful. They used to be very affordable, but I went there to get my hard drive replaced it was expensive and the hard drive died within a year. They did replace the hard drive for free, but I ended up purchasing the new hard drive myself because I was too afraid that they wouldn't keep my backed up data (they didn't) and I did not want to mail in the old hard drive, which was under warranty without a backup. The main person I dealt with for the whole process was fairly rude throughout. My partner is also much more aware of computer issues and is quite certain that they lied to us when they initially put in the hard drive about how much they charged for labor and how much the hard drive that they installed cost. I understand when a business is doing well and can make decisions to charge more for labor, but I don't like being lied to about the reasons behind the increased cost. I will probably still use them for minor issues, but I am going to figure out the hours of the person who is kind and helpful, and avoid the hours of the person I dealt with most recently. read more

Had diagnosed our family's Windows desk top tower and it needed a new hard drive. This store was recommended. Found the owner and his right-hand man Fez very understanding and helpful and willing to work with our time schedule. While they properly specialize more in APPLE, they quickly got on top of the problem including our back up software to bring our computer back to life with all settings restored and ready to go to work. Though the breakdown of a family computer can be traumatic and nerve-racking, they did their level best to make it a more tolerable and less stressful experience. As the owner of a small business, I'm glad that Tech Shield continues to exist. They've been awesome in terms of the customer service that they offer, and as someone who is a big fan of treating the customer properly, this place know's where it's at. Repair Number 1: 5 or 6 years ago, my iBook G4 simply refused to connect to the internet. After trying everything except smashing it with a hammer, I called Tech Shield and spoke with Daniel in terms of exploring my options. After listening patiently, Daniel offered a couple suggestions, and then offered to come out to my place to see what the problem was. The day before Daniel was supposed to come out, Chicago had almost 2 feet of snow hit the ground. Instead of bailing on our appointment, Daniel still made the hour trip out to see what was wrong. After taking a look at the Network settings, he showed me how to reset everything and -bam-, just like magic, I was back on the world wide web. Instead of charging me for the trip out, or even the work, Daniel asked me to simply post a review. I was absolutely blown away with how well this individual was able to represent the company and I will always remember the fact that someone wanted to help a young kid get back on the internet. Repair Number 2: After my 2007 Macbook optical drive hit the bricks, I had someone swap out the supposedly still functioning optical drive from my original Macbook. In the process, something ended up getting messed up, and I called Tech Shield once again to explore my options. One of the rad elements about this business is that unlike most of the amateurs currently on the market, these folks don't charge a dime for diagnosing the issue. After dropping my Macbook off on a Monday night an hour or so before close, I got a call the next morning informing me of the issue, the fix, and what the price would be. (Apparently the optical drive had stopped working and there were issues with connections on the board.) I was quoted a lower price than usual since I had done business with Daniel before. Instead of upselling me and pushing a useless install on a new optical drive, the shop owner suggested that it be better to obtain an external cd-drive. )I was super impressed with this so all you shady computer shop owners take note. This evening, I picked up my Macbook and everything is alive and well. Support and back local independent businesses that are actually concerned about the quality of their work and your product instead of dealing with corporate over-priced computer companies. I just got off the phone with Tech Shield, a month after getting my Macbook screen replaced (a service they claim to specialize in). Since this screen replacement service, my lcd display has yellowish spots which come up at the bottom of the screen, and my camera no longer works. Additionally, there are specs of dirt between the screen and the lcd display that sit indefinitely between me and whatever I am viewing. Damage has also been done to the center hinge adjoining the top case and bottom case. Finally, the "glass" (which is plastic) is peeled away from the glue and falling off. At the time of service, all I noticed were the yellowish spots that revealed the damaged lcd. They apologized and did not bill me. Since then, I'm finding more and more problems with my computer because of this "expert" screen replacement. read more

Tech Shield is amazing. I came in with two laptops that would not boot up, one because the video card overheated and burned the unit. Barack (the owner), Matthew and Alex were able to retrieve all of the data in both laptops and but it on a back up drive for me. I decided to finally switch to a Mac and Barack set me up with an amazing MacBook at a great price. Because of the learning curve going from a p.c. to a Mac and because of a deadline I was under, Matthew sat down and spent a vast amount of time teaching me the basics. Very Disappointing Experience I had a very disappointing experience at the store, mainly through poor customer service and constantly being lied to. I was misled throughout the entire experience, which led to me being unable to use my computer for two and a half weeks. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS STORE. (Below is the event) I dropped a MacBook Laptop off with a broken/cracked screen on a Saturday. The person working at the store examined the laptop and said he knew what the problem was, and that it only needed a new screen/display. He went to the back to check if they had the necessary parts in stock, and, when he came back, he said they had the necessary parts in the store. He said that they couldn't fix it that day and they were closed on Sunday, but he said the computer would be ready on Monday. He emphasized several times throughout our interaction that the computer would be ready "DEFINITELY" on Monday. When I didn't receive a phone call on Monday saying my computer was ready, I called them and they said they were still working on it and needed more time. That was fine, so I waited a couple days. On Wednesday, I stopped into the store to see if my computer was ready. I had my receipt with me, showed them it, and asked about the status of my computer. They said they were still working on it, and that one of their employees was almost done with it. I left and waited another several days for the phone call. I came back on Saturday, a week after I had dropped it off, and asked if my computer was almost done, they said they were waiting for the necessary part to come in. I told them that the employee a week ago said that they had the correct parts in stock and said it would be ready Monday. The employee that day only said that the other employee was wrong and had lied. I left Tech Shield very frustrated, as I needed my computer for work. Another week went by, and I came in on Wednesday, 10 days after I had dropped off my computer, and asked about the status of the delivery. The employee said that he was waiting for the delivery and it would be delivered very soon, probably even that day (I stress that he said it would be there that day). Nothing happened, and I came back on Saturday to get my computer, whether or not it was fixed. When I went in the employee said that they delivered the wrong color screen (Silver as opposed to matte gray) and that he was expecting the correct screen to be delivered that day. I told him I didn't care about the color of the screen, I just wanted my computer fixed. I said that if they didn't have the correct screen by 5, they could just use the other screen. The man said that would be okay, and he would have my computer done that day. I said that was fine and left. They called me 10 minutes before they closed, saying my computer was ready. Obviously, I could not make it to the store in time, and they were closed on Sunday, so I had to wait until Monday to get my computer. I got my computer back a whole two weeks after I was PROMISED it would be ready. If they had been upfront with me and told me the part wasn't in stock, that would have been fine. I would have taken it to the Apple Store and everything would be okay. However, they constantly misled me and deceived me about the status of my computer, saying they were working on it when they hadn't even started it. It was a thoroughly frustrating and disappointing experience, and, if I could, I would give them zero stars. read more
