I had lots of mediocre bubble tea in San Jose. You'd think that San Jose, with its proximity to San Francisco and high concentration of Asian businesses, would have lots of decent options. Nope. We tried Ding Tea and a branch of Gong Cha, among others, and they were all disappointing. Teaspoon, at least the Milpitas location, stands out from the rest. The drink flavors are both more unique and very flavorful. Staff are also helpful and friendly. The taro milk tea comes with taro chunks (yay!). One of their more original flavors "The Grasshopper," is lychee green tea topped with cucumber juice. How refreshing! There are a few tables if you want to hang out. They have a backsplash on the back wall that's great for photos. ;) Overall happy with my experience, and I would definitely return next time I'm in the Bay Area. read more

First time there. I was going to order grapefruit green tea however after I tried their dark Oolong MT sample, I changed my mind n switched to Oolong MT. But things not done yet, the Oolong MT I got tasted kinda different from the sample. First, the MT tasted bland, a bit watery, not rich in either Oolong Tea or milk flavor. Boba was better than iTea, which was soft and chewy, not rubbery. Teaspoon was recommended by my local friend. They use authentic loose tea to make the drink which is what I prefer. Quite possibly the best bubble tea and Taiwanese shaved ice I've ever had. I've tried creating my own here with earl grey and crystal boba with house cream, which was absolutely delicious - the tea was wonderfully brewed and powerfully fragrant. The next tea I tried was the Liquid Gold at 50% sweetness - still very pleasant, but not for the sugar junkie. As a tea lover, I really enjoyed both the mixed and straight options available. As of this review I've only tried the Thai ice snow, which finds a great match with the condensed milk drizzled over it. My favorite thing about this place, aside from the very well brewed teas, is the carefully boiled tapioca balls. I've had undercooked ones with an unpleasantly hard center, and also overcooked ones with an unsatisfying chew. This place gets it right. If you've never tried crystal boba, I'd recommend giving it a shot here. It's pretty interesting and less tiring to chew on than the standard tapioca version. read more

Teaspoon has some really unique specialty drinks that they're brave to execute and pretty successful at delivering on. It was a hot Saturday afternoon and I was really looking for something refreshing. I decided to get a virgin mojito which is a mix of mint leaves and lime in jasmine tea. They have flavor options that go with this and I'm not sure if you can go without the flavor. The person that took my order didn't prompt for a flavor and I had to ask for it myself. One of the more interesting toppings that I saw were the passion fruit dolphins. It turns out that their name is pretty descriptive. They were dolphin shaped jellies that were passion fruit flavored. I was kind of skeptical that I'd be able to get a dolphin through a boba straw but it's doable. There's kind of a technique to it as well...you have to hover over the tail of a dolphin and then well...sip hard. This technique does tend to damage the dolphin so I hope you're okay being a monster like all the other gummy bear and animal cracker eaters. The dolphins do taste of passion fruit and it's not too sweet. Overall the drink was decent. It was a little bit sweet and I really could have done without the peach flavor since that took over all the other mojito flavors. read more

Decided to check out the Milpitas Teaspoon since I was around the area. It's just as great as the other one I frequent. :) The great thing about this location is that they have indoor seating. Not a lot but good enough for sipping bubble tea. I ordered the Jasmine rice with 75% sweetness and less ice. The baristas got my order right and I didn't have to wait in a long line. Potentially my new favorite boba chain! Good chewy boba. Not hard uncooked, not disintegratingly soft. Friendly staff that takes the time to ask if you want toppings with that, because when you forget to ask for boba, other places just assume you don't want it and then you have to suffer drinking your non-boba tea when all you really wanted was the boba. Same friendly staff that calls you by your name (and not some number) and gets your order correct and fast. Slender looking cups that makes drinking boba look sexy and refined... not graffiteed with cutesy asian cartoon animals. Maximing efficiency with 10ish very different but very good choices instead of bombarding the customer with all these tropical fruit flavors that no one has really heard of but all kinda taste the same. I ordered the Strawberry Sangria today, the drink is pretty good and I forgot to take a picture until the drink is halfway finished. Drink is a little too sweet though, if you don't like sweet make sure you do like 25% sweetness. I ordered 50% is still super sweet. Always wanted to order this drink but never did because they can't adjust the ice level for this drink. But today I really wanted strawberry so I decided just to get it anyway. I'm not sure why but even if they put more tea and no ice for this drink I don't think the taste would be much different, might even taste better since it's got so much sweetness to it. The place is not very busy when I got there but the counter is a little messy and floor is not very clean either, had some ice cubes on the floor as well. My hands were kind of sticky after touching the bottles of the samples they provided and the tables were not clean either. I love coming here. When I first tried this place (weeks ago) I didn't think much of "another boba joint". But no sir. This is so much more than just "another boba joint." With unique concoctions dubbed with sunny names like Turtle Island and Lady Bug - you cannot help but be suckered into their Teaspoon Fandom. Teaspoon is "Gong-Cha" meets "The Best Boba Joint (in your town)". You can control the sweetness to most any of your drinks (kinda like Gong-cha), and you can get as fruity and milky as you want (kinda like the best boba joint in your town). I ended up coming here three times the last week. That's kind of crazy for a person like me who scoffs at people who have to have Starbucks everyday. I woke up to reality this morning to find no such pass or even bubble tea in my room! NOOOOO... I have reviewed Teaspoon before but at the Mountain View location. If you have read that, I have added a few other drinks that I have had at the Milpitas location. Parking: This is in a plaza, so plentiful parking Ambience: The space is smaller than the Mountain View location, with 4 tables of 2 seats. It is not ideal for bigger groups or for studying. Service: The employees are friendly and prompt. It takes a bit longer to make the bubble tea here compared to Mountain View (not by much though). Order: I have been to this location and Mountain View several times. Drinks are $4.50 (including boba) and $0.50 more if you want to upgrade from milk to cream. I have ordered the following (as mentioned in my Mountain View location review); in addition to those, I have also had: 1) Roasted Tea Crema (roasted oolong tea with sea salt crema): This one is strong in the tea taste, which I like. It reminds of Liquid Gold (of course without the light honey taste). The crema gives a great saltiness taste with the oolong tea. It's not my favorite drink as I prefer Liquid Gold which is a bit sweeter. 2) Grass Hopper (lychee green tea with cucumber juice): When I saw this, I was like this is such a healthy drink! It is a refreshing drink, perfect for when you have just finished a workout. (From my Mountain View review, for reference - I have had some of these drinks (marked **) in the Milpitas location and they are just as good): Creamy Jasmine Milk Tea (jasmine infused green tea with organic cream): This is perfect at 50% sweetness. I got it at 25% last time, and it was so bland. Mine have tasted more milky with a slight hint of jasmine. **Liquid Gold (roasted honey oolong with organic cream): This is my favorite drink at Teaspoon; I can tasted the roasted-ness (is that a word lol) of the tea and it is perfectly sweetened if reduced to 25 or 50% sweetness. I like mine to taste more like tea, so 25% is perfect. If you want it sweeter but not too sweet, 50% is perfect. **Taro Lover (taro milk with taro chunks): This is my least favorite drink. Fantasia does a better job in making this, as the one at Teaspoon taste more powder-y than real taro flavor. Classic Thai Tea (thai sweet tea with organic cream): This one tastes like what you would order at Thai restaurants. Reduce the sweetness to 25 or 50% as 100% is so sweet! House Milk Tea (special blended house black tea with cream): This one tastes like a Hong Kong style milk tea. It doesn't taste any different from other places I have tried. Verdict: 5 because service is great, parking is super easy, and consistently great bubble tea is made. This place does not offer food as the Mountain View location. read more

For a while they used to be my go-to boba place! The boba was fresh and super sweet. However, they run out of things a lot, like lychee jelly, and since it was multiple times I now come here on occassion. I know it can be hard because of COVID but seeing as other places had lychee jelly it didn't make sense to settle for a 6$ drink. Otherwise, the drinks I have had there taste good! Couple other things- they do have a rewards system but it seems less involved and trackable than other places. Also, it often seems like they're short-staffed since I end up waiting a while- which I don't mind- but it's sometimes upwards of 10 minutes. Overall great place! read more

Teaspoon is not your typical Boba place in that they do more "specialty" drinks and less emphasis on the make your own variety. I normally like to get a lychee or mango green tea, so when this place first opened, I was confused on how/ what to order. Their drinks are all made fresh and have lots of flavor. From their normal menu, my favorite is the grasshopper which has a tangy minty flavor with a hint of lime. They recently added a drink called mango something (mango madness maybe?) Which is basically a mango smoothie...I didn't get Boba in it last time because I was going to bring it home and share with my kid (and I didn't want the boba to freeze) but I think it would taste great with that or maybe mango stars or lychee jelly. They also have snow here (from the pictures it looks like a Korean bingsoo? Or whatever it's called) but I haven't tried it yet. The seating is pretty limited and that doesn't look like a "to-go" style dessert so I haven't gotten the chance to get it. There is no food here. They also offer a lot of promos and are part of Five Stars. They give you a free drink on your birthday (again, through 5 stars) and they have special drinks during the holidays (ex. We got two drinks but I am so disappointed about their boba. :( Teaspoon uses to have the best boba in Bay Area, however their USA boba texture is too soft and very sticky for some reason. As we were on our way home, we realized that our drinks are filled with a lot of ice and my drink was just milk tea with no sweetness, uggh! Super tiny location hidden away near the grocery outlet in calaveras square with a small selection but super friendly service and legit tasting milk teas. Their creamer is lactose free and taste pretty delicious on its own. I had the Thai iced tea for $3 and some change and it was good, they did not jip me with hella ice, and the drink came out fast. Teaspoon is one of my favorite boba places in the Bay Area. They make great fruit-flavored teas. I like that they're really specific about the tea and doesn't skimp on that. Also the fruit flavors aren't just from syrup, which is great. Lastly, they're careful not to make everything so sweet. My go to is the grapefruit garden. I ordered a Japanese Rice Green Tea without meal and it was my favorite. The tea is so refreshing. I also order a Jasmine Green Tea, it was good too.
