I was on the way to El Monte to get my car repaired/tuned up, and I wanted to try some restaurants in the El Monte area. I saw this Hong Kong cafe that was open for breakfast and had a lot of good deals, so I decided to come give it a shot. TD Cafe is a very spacious Hong Kong cafe with ample seating. We were seated immediately. The staff were super attentive to all our needs. Our family and I ended up sharing a congee breakfast combo that came with rice noodle rolls, an instant noodle with pork chop and pineapple bun combo, and a curry chicken with a side of rice lunch combo. The breakfast combo came with a hot lemon tea and also a hot coffee. The portions were massive, incredibly generous. The side of rice noodle rolls with sauce was quite filling, as was the giant bowl of congee. The pork chop was tender and not too tough to chew. The noodle soup was light. My favorite was the chicken curry. I wish the cooks had added potatos, but the sauce was quite reminiscent of Hong Kong curry. We ended up having plenty of leftovers for dinner. Though it is the only Hong Kong cafe in El Monte, their food is fresh and porridge texture is consistent. We always get the porridge combos and get some orders togo. We went on a Sunday night and it was a bit busy. Food was good for most part. We had the crispy noodles with gravy and chicken and bok choy. The gravy was saltier than other cafes. We got a free order of fried whole shrimp cause we ordered a lot. They also gave us fries while we waited. We also got the pork knuckle with peanuts in sauce. That was tender and tasty. Also we ordered the duck with bao bread and lettuces wrap. That was pretty good as well. Our meal took over 2 hours. For a cafe that's not great. Overall I would recommend this place but not for a quick bite. The food was good but can take a while when they are busy. Service was good but you might have to flag down your server when it's busy. Based on my experience with the take out and food here, place was decent. Closer to my house is a Chinese cafe which I didn't know they opened for a while now. Located in a strip mall on Lower Azusa, there are other businesses here. I came here for take out and waited for a bit for my order. Knew it would take a while since there were some tables filled. I paid and waited but the staff were nice. I ordered their soy sauce chicken and bbq pork along with rice as well as a baked pork chop with spaghetti. The soy sauce and bbq pork wasn't too bad. Comparable with like Sam Woo and other places. The baked pork chop with spaghetti was ok though as I've definitely had better elsewhere. Plenty of cheap but the taste was different to me. When we asked for refills on drinks, the waiter sighed and rolled his eyes. The food was alright, we ordered several dishes and for the most part, they all came out in a fair amount of time. However there were 2 dishes that were really delayed and each time we asked for an update, the waiter would say it's coming out. I love HK style cafes/restaurants. Whenever a new one is available, my face will be present Hahh I have been here twice now. I received great customer services both times. I heard it could be chaotic and unorganized...I guess it is best to go on weekdays around 5pm. I went around that time for both visits. Pretty empty. My fav was definitely the complimentary pineapple buns w/butter. Ohmyyygawdd..so fresh and yummy lol The first time I was here, I really enjoyed the half order of ducks. It was so fresh, juicy, and meaty. That made me wanted to visit again. The greens were fresh as well. Second visit..ordered the whole duck. It was too skinny and mainly fats. Newest HK cafe to open up in the 626. I was super excited to learn that there was a HK cafe super close to home. I actually tried TD Cafe three times (once take out & twice in house). My first time when I called in my order the staff had difficulties understanding what I was saying and asked if I spoke Chinese. Which I do not so that made ordering a bit difficult. I was trying to go off of the menu images I saw on Yelp to place my order. My second and third time, were both dinner time and food came out at a decent pace but staff took forever to take our order or even pay us any attention. It was a lot of flagging down staff. Staff are slow, and you gotta make sure that they give your order correctly. Both times they forgot our rice that came with the meal. The third time we came they gave one free butter pineapple bun. Ordered: *Beef Chow Mein (Crispy)- you need sriracha for this to give it the extra flavor but overall it gets the job done. *Rib eye steak- great meat texture. first time it was made perfectly medium as requested. the second time, it was on the raw side, so we had to flag down a staff to ask them to cook it again. both times they forgot the rice that comes with it. *walnut shrimp- this was one of the worst walnut shrimps ever. it was too sour and way too saucey. it was really hard to eat. i do not recommend it at all. *2 item bbq plate (duck & bbq pork belly - these two bbq option was an extra charge). but i enjoyed both items. luckily they didn't run out of the bbq meats. *lemon ice tea- tasted good, just like all of the other HK cafes. *beef and broccoli- this is a safe order, they made this one perfectly. my kids had no complaints. Would I come back here? Only if I am truly lazy to drive further out to get a HK cafe fix. They aren't super packed but I have to say that be prepared to spend more than an hour here. Service is just that slow. I tried asking one of the staff a question but he didn't understand English, so I had to try and hunt down another staff which took a long time. Tasty food for a good price, there's dishes for $11.99 even for dinner and comes with rice. Went on a Saturday night and it was packed! Came early so didn't have to wait for a table but felt sorry for the waiters as they looked limited in number. They managed to get the orders in and food still came out in a decent time. The fish maw soup was not up to par, a bit too much thicker and flavor was on the mild side. I have to give credit I did see real pieces of crab and it was improved with a bit of red vinegar. Sometimes I'm in full agreement with the Yelp ratings. Currently at 3.5, this describes my experience. I can't seem to round up to 4. TD Cafe is fairly new. Located in the middle of a plaza in El Monte, they're already wildly popular. I wouldn't describe this as an actual cafe. More of a seafood / HK style restaurant. Menu ranges from market price seafood, to your ubiquitous rice plates with chicken or pork chop, bbq items (which they seem to stop offering some already) and their lunch/ dinner specials at a low price, $12 a plate. I suspect this is what draws the huge crowd. That's what got us to come too. We were naive to arrive at 11am on a Sunday. The wait was 30 minutes for a table, and that's because a party before us gave up waiting and left. We placed our orders as soon as we sat down: Sautéed string beans. Compared to some other places, these were just OK. It was served with strips of pork and a slightly tangy but spicy sauce. 3/5 Deep fried pork chop in spicy salt. Hot, crispy and delicious. Mostly lean and meaty pieces and nicely seasoned. 4.5/5 French style filet of cod. Also delicious. Served deep friend and tossed in a mildly spicy sauce. A slightly bit on the salty side but pairs well with rice. 4.5/5 Chili pepper beef: Remember that vintage 80's commercial, "Where's the beef!?" Yep, that's it. Mostly onions and peppers for color. The beef slices we got were overcooked and tough. 2/5 Spam and egg sandwich w/ fries. I could've easily made this at home, but it's ok. Nothing special. 3/5 Pineapple buns: I asked for the butter to be on the side. It came inside the bun, but they were served warm and so soft. After trying it, I still prefer it w/o butter. 4/5 The setup: Larger, family sized tables are towards the back of the restaurant. Smaller tables, 2 or 4 seaters are closer to the entrance. The ambiance: Pure chaos. Many Chinese folks are probably used to this but can be intimidating to others. The place is loud and you need to be aggressive to get a number, to get your table, place your order and to get servers' attention. It doesn't mean to be obnoxious, just don't be timid. They could've hired more staff, that way the tables turn over much quicker. Customers will be happier they got fed, people waiting won't stand around blocking everyone else, and higher turnover means more business for the restaurant and tips for the servers. The 'lively' vibe did not make for a relaxing meal. It was chaotic and stressful as people crowded near our table hounding the hostess, and the staff clearing the tables often had to yell 'excuse me!' Maybe after some time, the hype will die down a bit. Maybe not. But if you want to come, be mentally prepared. Side Note: They're able to reserve a table for large parties of 8-10. There's a station around the corner of the hostess counter near the entrance. There, you can get your own to-go boxes, utensils, straws, plates and napkins. Drove down Lower Azusa and saw a banner that advertised the grand opening of TD Cafe. Decided to try it out with my parents and was pleasantly surprised with how busy it was on Saturday evening. The restaurant itself is fairly big with a good number of tables - about 85% of tables were filled when we walked in and there was a steady number of customers entering during our stay. We don't have too many HK cafes in the area, so I can see this place being busy. TD Cafe is located in the bowling alley plaza - there's been a lot of restaurants popping up, so hopefully this one is here to stay. Parking is not an issue - located in a fairly large plaza with a ton of parking space. Overall ambiance is nice - high ceilings, large space for people to meet and chat. The menu offers a good selection of Chinese dishes with lunch and dinner specials, several special combinations (comes with a drink and soup), as well as some Western dishes. Prices are pretty affordable. Not sure if they have breakfast, but they do have some items that are typically found for breakfast (kaya toast, French toast, HK style pineapple buns). Ordered the special combination of the clay pot rice with preserved meat, dry morel and chicken soup (the other more popular soups were sold out for that day) and an iced lemon tea ($18.99). The clay pot rice does take about 30 minutes to cook, but the wait time wasn't too bad. I really liked the soup - slightly medicinal, super warm and healing on a cold evening. Lemon tea was made well, but slightly on the sweeter side. As for the clay pot rice - I really enjoyed this dish! Came with a separate sweet soy sauce that we poured over the rice. There was a generous amount of Chinese sausage, preserved meats. I also enjoyed digging at the bottom of the pot for the harder rice pieces stuck to the bottom of the pot. Fried stick rice with preserved meat, dried mushrooms, dried small shrimp, peanuts $12.99. This was well made - good amount of ingredients, liked the chewiness of the rice, and the peanuts on top gave the dish a more fragrant and elevated feel. And we got the deep-fried pork chop with honey garlic sauce $11.99 - one of the lunch and dinner specials that come with steamed rice. For $12, this was pretty worth it. A good amount of pork chop pieces. Sauce was a bit cloying, but overall had good flavor that went well with the rice. They also gave some free garlic bread as an appetizer, which was appreciated. The interior has a very industrial look, but then, chandeliers decorate the ceilings. Booths and tables still look pretty new and clean, but our plates were filthy so we got that changed out. Service: The service is somewhat all over the place, but that is to be expected for such a new restaurant. We came in at 10:30am, but we waited 15 minutes for the iced milk tea, 25 minutes for the fish, and around 50 minutes for the X.O pan-fried rice noodles...which ultimately got cancelled because the kitchen never got the order. The table next to us didn't fare much better...they waited around 50 minutes for the remainder of their order. I hope they iron out the wait times quickly. The servers are doing the very best they can, but I think it's a serious case of being understaffed front-of-the-house and back-of-the house. Our orders: Iced Milk Tea: this was $1.95 with our entree order. My mom and I visited TD Cafe for lunch around 2:30 PM and tried their lunch special, which starts at $11.99. We were seated right away, but unfortunately, no waiter came by for the first 20 minutes, so we had to wave someone down to take our order. We ordered a few dishes to share: 1.Singapore Vermicelli - Decent flavor, but could use more yum yum (MSG) for that extra kick. 2. Baked Bolognese Pasta - Very bland. A little ketchup and bay leaves would have helped bring out that classic HK-style flavor. 3. Two-Item Combo ($19.99) - BBQ Pork & Soy Sauce Chicken Rice - This was the most surprising dish. The soy sauce chicken was jet black, which I wasn't expecting. When I asked the waitress about it, she explained that the chef uses mushroom soy sauce, which makes it darker than usual. My mom and I couldn't help but wonder if it was black hen instead, but she reassured us it wasn't. It tasted fine, but I still found it a little unsettling since I usually associate black hen with soup rather than as a main dish. I tried to flag the runner to grab our server, she made eye contact with me - gave me a stink eye and continued to walk away. I decided to take my family to dinner at TD Cafe tonight. We arrived around 5:30 p.m. tonight; this place is like a zoo--people everywhere. There are a lot of people waiting outside; we waited inside the café because it was so cold outdoors, and there are a lot of people waiting on the side, on the path, and it's a mess. We are a group of seven, and the waitress calls the party of eight to the table despite the fact that our waiting number is ahead of them. I believe it's my luck that we're usually overlooked, and they'd rather give us the table than other parties... The table we received was not even cleaned, had no settings, and was not even wipe clean. I asked one of the female servers to give us the settings, but she ignored me and went on to do something else. Finally, I got one of the servers to take our order, but the items we wanted were all out... So in the end, we just ordered whatever was available... I must add that all of the dishes are really small and not worth the price. Even my kids disliked the food and barely took a few bites. Overall, it was overcrowded, the portions were small, the prices were high, and the service was poor... This restaurant requires significant improvements in order to thrive in the future. After 15mins and speaking to 4 employees, the drink server came to say they were sold out on eggs. It was hard to tell who works there as everyone started to help themselves. First time coming. Not good. Bad. Getting our number was confusing as the counter to get our number was also the counter for payment. It was also in an inconvenient place, inside around the corner, behind the empty food display. There is no waiting area inside the restaurant. Anyone waiting for their table has to wait outside, IN THE RAIN. Seat attendance called for number 41. We were 42. She proceeded to call 43. Skipping our number entirely. It's not a great first impression. There are only 3 waiters for the entirety of the restaurant. Tables are spaced out too wide, so walk time for waiters is long. Waiters are sending food to the kitchen on only TWO computers. One really far away from the table in the corner and one hand-held tablet. Wait time for food order is exponentially longer. We waited 25 minutes, upon sitting down, for someone to take our order. Getting our food is even longer than 25 minutes. The kitchen staff is overworked and understaffed. Food was coming out of the kitchen at a very slow rate. During our wait for our food. We saw 3 different groups of customers get into a verbal argument with the staff over a certain dispute. We even saw the kitchen manager get into a verbal scolding with the employee at the front desk. It's not a good look for a restaurant that just opened. While waiting for the food. The 3 waiters were walking back and forth with plates of food to empty tables or tables with different group of customers. The customers were fed up with having little to no food for upwards of 35 minutes. I counted 4 times that waiters were bringing food back to the kitchen. Saying in Cantonese, "The customer already left." When the food did come. It was of small portions and giant disappointment. The plate of rice was pitiful for anyone's appetite. The meat portion was laughable for a "lunch special." The only saving grace was the sauce on the vegetable entrée. At least, they got the most basic dish, correct. Absolute disgrace to Cantonese Cuisine. We ordered 3 entrée. Notice how's there's only 2 pictures of entrée available. They forgot one entrée and refused to take it out of the final total. On a Saturday morning in March, I took my mother here for breakfast with my sister and mother. We arrived at 8:10am and we got a table right away as the 2nd group. Inside looks nice of woodsy high glam look. Lots of big round tables with tables for small parties. I got shrimp wontons with toast and fried egg, ice lemon tea $13.99 which is an odd combo. My mother got the century egg and pork, Chinese donut, rice noodle roll with milk coffee $12.99. She got her congee but they forgot to put the egg in her congee. There was only one waiter so he was taking care of other tables and take out orders. The congee was not too thick with pork pieces -no photo. The shrimp wontons taste okay just average. My sister ordered dried scallops porridge, spareribs with rice roll. Her congee was missing dry scallops instead I see small pieces of century egg yolk. We could not get a free refill of lemon tea. It looks longer to pay our bill as more people came after 8:30am to 9am. We left at 9:10am. Average slow service since they just opened in El Monte. Maybe their lunch is better. Food is okay. The usually hk cafe food. The good thing is that they have combos where you can get 1 of 4 dishes + soup + drink. The thing is didn't like was we ordered the rice pot ones and those usually take a long time so we had half the food come out and we finished and had to wait for the other half. My parents ate here earlier on and said the food was decent. Ate here today and it was abysmally bad. I got the combo meal - two bbq item rice, roast duck and char siu, with an over easy egg. Firstly the duck had to have been a day old and they served me the neck and the wing drumstick. It was dry and definitely not fresh tasting also it was lukewarm at best. The char siu was dry and flavorless it was just pork dyed red. The rice was also not fresh you can tell by how it resembles fried rice where the grains are not clumping and porcelain instead of white and fluffy. The milk tea here is flavorless does not have the deep flavor of other milk teas you get from HK cafes. The only redeeming thing was the ginseng soup which was the only non offensive part of the combo. The pineapple bun with butter was below average and forgettable but was complimentary if you spend over 30 dollars. Everything else my family ordered was just mid and the portions for some of the dishes were a bit small. My father also got a bbq combo same complaints. Yummy new cafe with Cantonese style dishes. Every dish we tried here was amazing but the HK ribs and the stir fried eggplant was out of this world. Love their lemon tea as well. A lot of good parking too. Will definitely be coming back here to try out more of their dishes. read more

I have been this restaurant several times. Saw the recent comments about the improved services. So, go to this restaurant again to experience the difference. Today is Thursday not as crowded as in the weekend. I ordered the dried morel & chicken soup and my wife ordered the ginseng & chicken soup. Both of them are pretty good and tasty. No MSG at all. We like them. We also ordered some other dishes. The French style fillet and Beef stew & radish in brown sauce are good as well. The lemon tea and milk tea are fine. The waiters are much more friendly. They are definitely doing better than before, even though there is room for improvement. We will come again as food is good at very reasonable prices. read more

I really like this restaurant's flavors, feels like authentic, home-cooked meals with heart. You can tell it's run by family members, which adds a personal touch, but also means the service may not be as polished or consistent as larger establishments. The food was tasty and comforting, though I'd love to see more attention to the dining environment. it felt a bit plain and could use some warmth or background music to enhance the experience.
