Came here to watch the SDSU game so sat at the bar. Nice spot "underneath" the building, hence Tavern. Well decorated and spacious. All wood goes well with Tavern feel. Bartenders, particularly CJ, were friendly and attentive. We enjoyed our sangria and beers with crispy chicken wings appetizer as well as the chicken pot pie and pork chops with risotto. Holy moly the pork chops were huge! You can't really tell in my photo but it's a big plate. All tasted well and cooked well. Other people's food looked really good too. Definitely a place to come check out. If I lived nearby, I'd be a regular here. read more

My boyfriend and I came on Valentine's for dinner. They have cozy seating inside or outside, with heat lamps available outside. For food we ordered the crab cake, steak tacos, pork chop, beet salad with chicken, and the cake dish available. It was disappointing to be served a single crab cake, it would have been nice to have been prewarned on this. The flavor and taste was good though. Steak taco flavoring and portion sizes were on point. Probably my favorite part of the meal. The pork chop sauce was delightful, but the risotto was bland on its own and unseasoned. I had ordered the beet salad with chicken, but they interpreted that I wanted a beet salad and the chicken entree. We had to wait a little longer for this to be corrected. It was such a small portion and so plain that I forgot to take a picture. The dessert took an immense amount of time to be served, and was subpar. Some pieces of cake were doused in bourbon whereas other pieces were completely dry. The atmosphere is cool and drinks are yummy but food was not so great. read more

Very thing was delicious. We walked in right at the start of the dinner hour. The was great--simply put a burger and fries and fish and chips. We gave up one order of fries for a side salad. We also couldn't pass up and order of roasted Brussels sprouts. The cocktails were yummy and refreshing. To top it off, we were served a freshly in store baked chocolate chip cookie with vanilla ice cream and a candle for the birthday lady. Last but not least, the service was excellent. Staff is super friendly and the food was good. A but if a wait but it was to be expected on a Friday night. Had the halibut and filet mignon tacos along with the brussels sprouts. The standout was the ancho chile balsamic reduction in the sprouts - it was absolutely delicious. The Ginger & Sage cocktail was so good and made with local Malahat ginger rum. The Fig & Orange was slightly sweet and perfect for the season. Dubs Jr. got the kid's burger which he enjoyed and we loved that they had lots of options for kids that were more than just mac and cheese and chicken fingers. What a unique underground place, The Tavern is certainly not below grade. Located in the middle of the Coronado village it is to find and miss. (Parking in this area is extremely tough - so plan accordingly.) Look for the recessed "Tavern" name and then walk down(see my pic of our view from our booth) a set of stairs to the restaurant. Once inside, it is very reminiscent of the old dark wood, lowly lit eastern taverns - a very homey feel. We were grazing our way through Coronado and stopped mid-afternoon. We started with their Great Old Fashions. These were good and served appropriately garnished, see pic. But most impressive were the Angus Sliders. The burgers were prepared as requested and were quite juicy for a small patty. The buns, while oversized, didn't overpower the beef. These were a nice snack. The French Fries were average and were under salted (this is good since you can always add salt). Which led to the salt and pepper dish (see pic), in which to get a pinch. Came here on a Friday right when happy hour was starting, got greeted and seated quickly, staff was very friendly and attentive. The ambiance was nice cool dark, very nice on a hot day, nice breeze inside. Also really cool features they had. Very rustic but modern in a way. Food was amazing! We got the Brussels sprouts and the steak tacos for appetizers, two IPAs and the perfect margaritas, very tasty and the drinks very well mixed. We also ordered some burgers, sandwich and the sliders. Oh wow this place is great! Came here tonight with family and I really enjoyed it. My niece ordered the filet mignon tacos. Tender and delicious. Her husband ordered the halibut tacos. Also superb. Myself, first I had the roasted beet salad. Arugula and ricotta cheese. A wonderful taste for your senses. I got the chicken with mashed potatoes and veg. So tender juicy and tasty. Came here today with some friends. Very cute spot in Coronado. Great vibe and fun ambiance. Also not crowded which was so refreshing on a busy Saturday in Coronado! My friends and I were immediately seated and had a very friendly and attentive server throughout our experience. We decided to try multiple items on the menu: Brussel sprouts- 8/10 very good but drenched in balsamic so after eating a couple the sauce was too heavy to continue eating Chicken pot pie- 10/10 very good! Wings- 8/10 flavorful but a bit dry Caesar salad- 6/10 nothing to write home about Filet Mignon Tacos- 6/10 hard to compete with tacos in San Diego! Overall, it's a relatively small menu but I'd come back for the ambiance, service and to try more food items! read more

The fish and chips was ok, the French fries were really good that was the only thing worth spending money on. All in all I'm super upset we spent $100 on this crappy food. Cocktails were excellent: Aloe and Cucumber was refreshing; I thought the Smoke and Honey was sweet but my wife loved it and ordered a second. This review is for drinks ONLY. We did not try their food. To start off they had a VERY unique set of drinks. The waiter explained that all their mixes are freshly made in house which might explain their one of a kind flavors. We tried their BEET margarita, yes I know it sounds weird, but wow! It was a perfect balance between the sweetness of a beet without the sometimes bitter flavor of the vegetable. Love the indoor/outdoor vibe of this place! The restaurant is located on a basement level, but there are big windows they had open so you could see people up on the sidewalk. Drinks and food came out quickly and our server was attentive, despite also dealing with a big party in addition to our table. They offered to bring out the kids meals first, I stole a few fries and wished I had some of my own. My chicken parm sandwich was great, the addition of the pesto worked well. I came in for happy hour (3-5/6pm?) and tried the robot panda hazy IPA draft $4.50 and brussels sprouts bites (2.50$). There were only 2 drafts offered but it didn't bother me. I really enjoyed the beer! I got 2! Lol. It was a good hazy! Yum! The Brussels sprouts were good too, enough for me! It's like a small bowl size lol. There was a bit too much balsamic vinaigrette as it pooled in the bowl, but I still enjoyed it. I'd recommend a lighter vinaigrette pour... or perhaps a drizzle, lol. She was literally on her hands and knees putting coasters under a foot of the table. She was just super nice. We had the fish and chips-good, crispy and a generous portion and nice fries. The filet tacos and the halibut tacos both good. The best was the Brussels sprouts-so good. Order 2 servings. You'll thank me. The dessert-only ok. Just a quick 2 minute walk from the Del hotel is this little gem known as the Tavern. I walked down their steps and headed right to their bar featuring lots of local brews. I was greeted promptly by the bartender who was congenial our whole visit there. I tried the Modern Times Black House Nitro, the 21st Amendment Brew Free or Die Blood Orange IPA, and the New English Brewers Special. All of which were amazing. Let's break them down individually though. The Modern Times Black House Nitro had notes of almond and wasn't sweet which is a welcome change from some of these overly chocolate stouts and nitros out there today. The Blood Orange IPA was tangy and sour with just a little of that IPA hoppy-ness. The New English Brewers Special was an amazing nut brown that is just perfect with everything. The food here was also sensational. I had the shrimp wrap and a side of house made sweet potato chips. I was seriously impressed and would come back just for this. But I'm also not one to skimp on dessert so I had to try the cookie- served in a small cast iron skillet and topped with a heaping helping of vanilla ice cream it is sure to hit the spot. I could only eat half so this might be a nice one to split with that special someone. read more

Our group of seven got this reservation on short notice and feel very lucky we did. We had a huge table to the left of the door and were able to celebrate in a relatively private corner. The service was excellent from the moment we walked in the door. Food was excellent and the majority had to request go- bags because of the generous portions. This was the case after dropping $50 at the Tavern for an appetizer, beer, and small plate. The best part of the Tavern was the ambiance and below sidewalk seating. While the waitress was good spirited, we had to remind us to bring us the beer that we had ordered while she chatted with someone else. When my $17 appetizer came, I actually thought it was a freebie sample from the chef and was shocked that it was the pork belly tostadas that I ordered. They looked like three tortilla chips with a small slice of pork on them. How much did I pay for these?!!! Located in the best place in the world arguably, The Tavern is nothing short of the best Brussel sprouts to ever grace my mouth. To start, the lowkey nonchalant vibe of this American bar is comfortable, yet still classy with its touch of rustic accents and the fact that it feels like a speakeasy. The servers were nice and efficient with the food, but not too pushy to the point where it felt like I was being rushed. Now, to the main point of this review...the brussel sprouts. I mean come on, the sauce they are drenched in and the perfect roast, crisp to perfection. With the mini bread crumbs as well its to die for. Im giving a 3 because the severs were nice. I felt like the wait time for food was too long. It is slow. Maybe 1/3 capacity. The food was hot which is also why they got 3 stars. Drinks were good and so were appetizers. Burgers were not good. Asked for medium and it was well done. There was also, raw bacon mixed into the burger. Horrible idea. Would've given higher rating if the burgers weren't trash. Everything else was good. I think all the food we got was overpriced. The vibe inside was awesome, which is also why I gave 3 stars. We are so happy to have found this place! We had not eaten since breakfast and at 2pm, needed a little snack before dinner. We smelled something delicious, and followed it to the Tavern. We ordered the Mac and cheese with bacon, steak tacos, and sweet potato fries. Everything was absolutely perfect. My husband will not stop talking about the tacos. The fries were thick and had some salt on top, nicely savory. The bacon Mac and cheese was super cheesey with a little bread crumbs on top. Perfection! We sat ourselves and the waitress Samantha came up and served us water to start. She was very personable and got all of our order correct. Back in Coronado for a little getaway and of course my BF and I had to visit The Taven. We first came here for lunch and we ordered the shrimp & potatoes and the crispy brussel sprouts. The shrimp & potatoes seemed a bit different than when we first ordered it. I swear it was a pesto sauce when we first ordered it and now it's a herb/butter sauce. It still tasted delicious just not what I was craving initially. The brussel sprouts were good and I liked the balsamic vinaigrette dressing they paired it with. For my lunch entree, I ordered the Coronado Golden Braised Short Rib Sliders. My sliders seemed like they were sitting for a while since the meat was lukewarm and the buns were soaked with oil. The fries that they came with were also cold. I feel like we always have a better dinner experience. Both my BF and I love ordering the chicken pot pie and this time around we both got hot pies. The kitchen seemed to time the food better than the last time we came here. We also ordered some happy hour dishes for the first time and I loved the mini mac n cheese. It was a perfect size that I was craving when I saw the menu. As always the cocktails are on point when we come here. My favorite of the two I tried were the "Ginger & Sage". Presentation was also on point and I had a fun time photographing my drink. We always end up going to the Taven and they (usually) never disappoint.
