But today I ate at the pool, with food brought from the sun deck. Times were pretty slow and it's not cheap. But my wahoo sandwich was delicious. And it's a luxury to eat it at the pool. So thumbs up and I would do it again when I'm here. read more

The Sun Deck is all about the ambiance. It is a beautiful setting on Coronado beach at the Del hotel. A large, wrap around deck is elevated above the beach for great ocean views. They have table, bar and couch type seating. Some seating has a minimum spend per table, so watch out for that. You are paying for the view here, so expect high prices for food and drink. Service was good. Drinks were strong and tasty. The food menu was pretty small. I got the cauliflower farro salad, which was fresh and light, just not what I was expecting. Others got the lobster salad and the harvest salad and they seemed a decent size, but fairly basic. read more

Beautiful view. Everything else was a joke. We're locals and don't usually come to the sun deck. It's typically packed with kids and tourists, but it was a beautiful day and we wanted ocean views without the drive. We grabbed a corner spot with a $175 minimum, easy to hit when the menu is priced like everything was flown in from Monaco. Water: asked three times, never came. The fourth time we finally got it, and only because the manager dropped it off himself after my husband spoke to him. Water is the bare minimum. It shouldn't feel like a favor. The food came out in five minutes. Five. That's not a kitchen, that's a heat lamp. Lukewarm at best, some of it cold. The giveaway: they brought us a kids' chicken fingers plate, realized we'd ordered the adult portion, took it back, then sprinted off to grab the bigger version. That's a steam tray with a hostess. And the lobster Cobb? The lobster was cut into little circles. Circles. Lobster has never been a circle. The servers moved around like expressionless robots. When my husband politely asked to speak with the manager privately, out of respect for the staff, the manager came over looking like he couldn't care less. Somehow the service got worse after that. He comped a burger and one other item. We still walked out near $175. The cherry on top? His apology was throwing his own employee under the bus. "Yeah, he's had a lot of complaints lately." That's not a manager. That's Gossip Girl with a clipboard. Be a leader. Handle it behind the scenes. This is exactly why the staff is the way they are because leadership comes from the top and if that's broken the whole operation is broken. We left and went to The Dive rooftop at The Bower Hotel. Sat down, and within a minute someone dropped off water. We sat there genuinely grateful, which is when it hit us how badly we'd been treated. Save your $175. The view is free!!!!! read more

Like many of the numerous 1-star reviews about the Sun Deck, I will concur that the ocean view is great, but the food leaves very much to be desired. My $32 cheeseburger was extremely raw and appeared to have only been shown to the grill instead of cooked by it. To be fair, I could feel some warmth on the fries, though. The second disappointing surprise came when the bill was presented. When I inquired as to what the extra line item entitled "HPF" was, it was explained this means "Historic Preservation Fund". Apparently, even if you only walked by The Del on your way to the restaurant, you will still be forced to pay for its upkeep. More importantly, it should also be noted that nowhere is a walk-in customer warned of these unexpected upcharges until after the meal. No warning via posted signage. No warning on the menu. No warning by staff. Unfortunately, it seems surprising an unsuspecting customer in this manner is becoming a far-too-popular trend these days with many establishments jumping on this bandwagon. The Hotel Del Coronado just south of San Diego has been a landmark in this area since 1888; and it's in amazing condition. With 80° weather (I left Chicago yesterday at 7°) this place has been a God Send for me not used to such severe winter weather. Meeting some friends here at The Del, the Sun Deck Restaurant hasn't changed a lick. Their menu is light, breezy and fun. I opted for their Sun Deck Bowl with herb quinoa, beluga lentil, romanesco, baby tomato, sweet potato, beets, yellow pepper, tarragon vinaigrette, ninja radish, pea tendril, olive oil, that was very good. Is it expensive here at The Del Coronado - Yes! But you're getting an amazing view of the Pacific Ocean, at its best, the cliffs of La Jolla to the north and the Tijuana promontory to the south; price is no object with these views. The service was excellent and this entire lunch was exceptional! Coming back to a place you visited as a child, a young adult, an adult and now a senior, gave me a cycle of life that one rarely gets. Last time I enjoyed quality fun time at the Sun Deck was years back when I had a boyfriend who loved sun bathing there beer in hand. I had not been often but last Friday they converted the place into 'Moon Deck's to welcome the Artemis back. So I had to be there at the splashdown ! It was great to have the special cocktail for the occasion with the little astronaut and the atmosphere was amazing and exciting. Everything was packed and some people had paid $175 to reserve the sofa in front of the TV broadcasting the event, although everyone was able to be there for free, no cover and not obligations which is appreciated. Dogs were welcomed and, as usual at this bar terrace with views, I love the electric crowd, kids included, the views, the food and service. All great. read more

I even chose this spot to bring two friends visiting from out of town, expecting it to showcase one of the best oceanfront dining experiences in the area--so the letdown felt amplified. It seems like they've completely overhauled the menu--and not for the better. The seafood options are now extremely limited, with wahoo being the only fish offering. Unfortunately, it was a miss: tough in texture with a slightly off smell that made it hard to enjoy more than a few bites. Service didn't help turn things around. It felt cold, distant, and at times nearly nonexistent. We spent long stretches trying to flag someone down, which took away from what should be a relaxed, coastal dining experience. The setting is still undeniably beautiful--the ocean views here are hard to beat--but it's frustrating to see such a noticeable decline in both food quality and hospitality. I have been here before. Today I just came for a beer. Service was quick and I was able to seat right away. I'm sure it's due to the time of day. The bartender was cordial and made great recommendations on beer. The ambiance here is always lively. I was hoping for a lot more Holiday decore around this part of Hotel Del but they fell short. My coworker and I were here for nursing conference. Having never been here, we wandered around and ended up stumbling onto the Sundeck. The seating area is located upstairs where you have a beautiful vantage point over the property and beach. Some tables merely have an umbrella. Others have nice soft cushions around table fire pits. I suppose I should have known that prices would be high here. The drinks clocked in for the price of a meal. And we ended up sharing two shrimp tostada tapas just to stave off our hunger. The shrimp was juicy was well cooked. The cojita added a nice contrasting saltiness. The bean paste, corn puree, and tomato relish added some nice zestiness to the dish without making it soggy. Our server was very attentive until it was time for the tab. Then she was nowhere to be found. Surprisingly good food and fast service! We stopped by because we were hungry and happened to be in the area -- and I'm so glad we did. As soon as we sat down, someone came right over with menus and let us know our server would be with us shortly. Enter Chris, our awesome server! I asked for a sweet drink recommendation, and he suggested the Hotel Del Colada -- their take on a piña colada. It was spot-on: sweet but not too sweet, creamy, and super refreshing. My boyfriend went with the "Some Like It Blond" beer, which he said was just okay. For food, we shared the San Diego Fish Sandwich, and wow -- it was a great choice! The location and view is stunning - absolutely a 5, Food is fairly mediocre and overpriced.- I'd rate it a 3, so 4 overall. I ordered the Wahoo fish sandwich ($30). The server gave it to me, I bit into it, and realized it was the burger ($32). When they came back out with the fish sandwich, I asked if I could swap, but they said no because I had already taken a bite. Oh well. Was not great, especially for $32, cheese tasted like fake American cheese, and the lettuce was shredded iceberg like you would get in a cafeteria. It also only came with ketchup and 1000 Island dressing, no mustard, had to ask for that. I was doing Dry February, so tried two of their mocktails - strawberry lemonade (too sweet), and the grapefruit Mojito, which I asked them to make with just a dash of simple syrup, not too sweet, and it was very good. Husband and I came here to grab a drink, snack, watch the waves and sunset for Valentine's Day. This place is a quintessential San Diego rooftop bar with less riffraf. Patrons are giving chill tourist. It was very busy but my husband spotted great secluded seats at the bar facing the ocean. For how busy it was, service wasn't bad. I stuck to Coronado blonde, which was great. Hummus plate was decent. Great mix of locals and tourists so fun people watching. Lots of large lounge seating areas with little fire pit tables to keep warm. Many of lamp shaped heaters. I would bring a hat because the sun is directly in your ears if you are having the ocean after 3pm. This is more of a couples or family vibe than a single's bar. Will be back! read more

I had lunch with my family here while our room was being readied and I have to admit it was good ( expensive just because it's resort dining and the view) and satisfying! We had the Del burger double cheese and fries and my wife had the shrimp tostadas while my mother in law got the fish sandwich. The portions are pretty large and be sure to snag a table with an umbrella for shade - I was surprised there weren't that many shaded tables for a large resort ( same for the pool area) but it was sufficient Pro tip the kids burger is cheaper with one less meat patty but enough for a kid up to 13 years old - anything to save you money ! The service was great the two times I ate there and everyone was nice and cordial - didn't have to wait that long - I added photos of the tacos from the taco shack as a bonus review and tbh I would skip it - for $12 you get a smallish taco just not worth it you will will be hungry! Love Hotel Del for so many things but for cheaper food definitely check out the local restaurants for better bargains read more

First time to Coronado , and stopped in this place . The hotel look was super awesome ! Loved the super colonial interiors and the overall look . It is very very expensive though. There was a bar inside but we decided to sit outside , bear the pool . The waiter was a bit slow but made sure he took care of us . They had flew varieties of beer and IPAs . Got hazy ipa and it was good . It was very expensive though .had to spend 14$ for an ipa and we spent about 50$ for 3 of us , one drink each ! No-fuss menu, all the bases covered for a casual meal, and the service is quite good considering you just sit wherever you want. Not sure how they keep track, but we never had trouble getting anything we needed. We split a couple of mains - a single plate is plenty per person, and they even cut everything in half for us to share. The Del Double Cheeseburger is a nice burger, nothing to complain about. I'm always weary of ordering fish, but their San Diego Fish Sandwich is fine. The rockfish breading is crispy, and the fish tasted reasonably fresh. For a similar price point, I think I prefer Eno Pizzeria, but the Sun Deck is a reasonable alternative if you don't want to eat every meal at Eno. read more

Note, the pool is a vintage rectangle which has been there forever and suits the remodeled vintage hotel perfectly! Classic chaise lounges abound. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive. I had to dock a star because the prices are unreasonable. For one soda and one burger total (which we split), our bill came to $50 with tip. The Sun Deck at the Del is beautiful and classy. I typically find my husband here when he comes with me on a business trip. He loves to hang out here and work and enjoy some fries or a few bourbons. The menu is pretty good for a bar. But this is no normal bar. This place overlooks the Pacific Ocean in a prime spot on the beach. Exactly what I was hoping for at Hotel Coronado! The patio seating offered stunning ocean views, and the ambiance was perfect for a relaxing evening. DJ was playing live music which paired perfectly with the views. I ordered the Baja shrimp entrée -- it was absolutely delicious. My husband and I came here for lunch. The sign says to sit wherever you want and a server will come to you. We sat down and no one came. I flagged down a server to ask for a menu and they told me since we are at a circular table near the bar we have to order from the bar. We did that. Then a table directly next to us with an umbrella opened up so we attempted to move there because my husband was getting too hot and wanted to be in the shade. It was the perfect table- half sun for me, half shade for him. Same great view. A server was extremely rude to us and made a huge fuss about us moving. She indirectly was saying we couldn't sit there because then she wouldn't get a tip because we already paid at the bar. I had to play 20 questions with her. She said we needed to transfer our bill. I said okay how do we do that. She said you'd have to start the new tab with the server and transfer your bill. I said okay, so are you saying I go get a refund and then ring it up again? She then said oh you're not going to order more? I said no, I'm eating 1 lunch today not 2. She was so rude, waved us away and told us to go talk to the bartender, and then immediately GAVE AWAY the table to the family that walked up and asked if they could sit there as we were still standing there discussing with her. We followed her advice and asked the bartender if we could move. The bartender was extremely friendly and said of course no problem- they will bring the food to our new table. Well since she already gave away the table we had to pick a different one that was fully in the shade and next to the kitchen so it was LOUD and COLD. That server tainted my experience and made me so mad I will never go back to this restaurant, nor will I stay at this hotel (which we were considering for our next trip!). read more

In all honesty, there are not many choices in Coronado Island, because almost everywhere is private. But, this place checked all my boxes: food, drinks, bathroom (although that was a bit of a walk inside to the hotel). I wanted a cheeseburger, but not a double burger, so asked for a single and was later surprised the waiter dropped the price down from 26 to 17 (kid's burger!) My absolutely delightful specialty cocktail was their take on a pina colada. The service was fantastic and the view of the Pacific was perfect. While I didn't go through all of the reviews I do see that Sun Deck does not carry a stellar rating but I'm going to go out on a limb and guess it's for the prices. News flash: It's expensive. YOU'RE IN CORONADO, DUMMY. This place lives, breathes, and encompasses San Diego. The boardwalk, the glitz, the glam, the fashion show, the beach, the cocktails... it's simply stunning. If I were rich I'd probably be here all of the time, buying drinks for beautiful hotel guests and slugging pricey drinks and beach food. So, this is my suggestion. Omg place is amazing. Loved the vegan options I got the salad here most of the evenings of vacation. The tofu you can add (I think I got the Thai salad) it's SO GOOD!! Get two of them. I always did and still wanted more. Service fast friendly and the food came out so fast every night.
