We would rate this as a 3.7. It's a bar and burger place. You go there and order a beer and a burger. The burgers are a notch better than McDonald's and their fries are great. That's it, that's why you go here. It's probably the best burger in town and it's a small town. The service is slow to nonchalant. It's a typical bar with outdoor seating and live music at night. My friend and I came to Tavern 1883 after a long day of driving and hiking in September. We arrived Saturday evening around 8:20, and the place was packed! They offer both indoor and outdoor seating. Our preference was outdoors, and luckily they still had a couple tables available outside. It was a bit chilly out, but they had heat lamps, so I felt comfortable taking my jacket off. As you'd expect from a pub, the alcohol selection here is great, with all the usual suspects like beers, wines, cocktails, hard liquors, etc. I went with a white wine sangria ($12). Felt like I deserved it after a long and tiring hike. It was served with some berries and orange slices and was very refreshing. I got the fish and chips ($21) for my main. I don't eat this dish often, but I thought it was delicious here (or maybe I was too hungry lol). The batter was nice and crispy without being overly thick, and the fish inside was still very moist. Didn't taste dry or overcooked at all. My friend initially wasn't very hungry, so he snacked on the falafels ($13), but later ended up ordering their mushroom / veg burger ($18) to go for a late dinner. Everyone in our party expected more from this establishment based off the recommendations, so we were all a bit disappointed with our dinner and service. Our waitress was extremely slow and inattentive. I ordered the gyro wrap and was not impressed. My Caesar salad was good though. Everyone else's plates looked mediocre and unappetizing. The patio was a beautiful setting but a little cramped. We had a kind waitress that did her best to accommodate us as our food (party of 2) took 50 minutes to come out. When 2 parties of 4, who sat down after us and ordered similar items, came out 20-30 minutes before ours. While I know this is out of the hands of the waitress, I was very disappointed in the lack of management at this establishment. Never once did a manager come speak to us or support the waitress in this situation. None the less, the waitress was apologetic, kind and compensated us for our delay. We ordered takeout from Tavern 1883 tonight, and sadly it was a huge disappointment. Their menu sounded interesting with all the game meats and that was why we decided to give it a try. It also scored high enough on Yelp and Google. Everything was salty, but the worst was the poutine. It was unbearably salty. If you have to watch your sodium intake, avoid this place. The 1 star is for the person answering the phone who did take the time to ask the kitchen if the poutine is usually made like this. My husband and family are from Montreal, Quebec, so he knows how it's supposed to taste and even he had to admit it's overly salty. I also found a hard piece (like cartilage) in the elk meatballs. I don't mind cartilage if I'm eating off the bone, but not in a meatball. We will not be coming back. read more

It was our last night in Canmore and we were looking for a place to chill. Tavern 1883 turned out to be a fun night! It was Sunday night when they have bingo at 8.30. The vibe is good. Loved the brussel sprouts, they were perfect crispy! The cauliflower bites were actually covered in batter and fried, would appreciate if the menu mentioned that. The lemon garlic gnocchi was good. Stopped in here for dinner on our first night in Canmore. Was pretty lively for a Sunday evening at 8:30pm-ish, but was seated right away inside (it was a beautiful night out so outside was all taken). There was some fun live music. Service was super friendly and efficient. I got the summer rice bowl, which was noted as spicy, and is truly pretty spicy. Went here after a long day in Banff. I got a Gin Mojito that was very good. My wings I ordered were also decent. The service throughout the night was pretty poor. We were rarely checked in on, and it took forever to get our check, and it wasn't even busy. After a long day of hiking, this place really hit the spot. We came straight from our hike for an early dinner at 4 and it was already fairly crowded, but there were a handful of open tables. We got two burgers: the wild boar burger and the ultimate tavern burger. We wanted to try the duck nuts but unfortunately, they were out. I may have a skewed viewpoint since I just finished hiking 10 miles and was starving, but I think these were the best burgers I've ever had. The flavor of the meat was incredibly and the toppings were delicious. We upgraded to parmesan truffle fries which were equally good with fresh shaved parmesan. The service was awesome. Our waitress was incredibly friendly and had great recommendations. Our food came out pretty quickly and they were very attentive. We arrived at tavern after a LONG day of hiking (13 miles) at Lake Louise. We were ravenous and tired - the worst combination for making food decisions. We put our trust in our server, Awale, and he did not disappoint. We started with the fried pickles (which come with 8 spears!) and they were phenomenal. We shared the bison burger and the fish and chips, with a poutine upgrade on the fries. The burger was delicious, the fish was perfectly flakey and crispily battered, and the poutine was classic and delicious. Awale was the icing on the cake and kept us laughing throughout our meal. Oh man...I'm still drooling over the truffle fries right now. When you can smell the truffle wafting into your nose as it sits you know you are in for a treat! What I also like is that the Parmesan is the real deal: nice generous flakes of cheese! You can get the taste of truffle and cheese with every fry. And of course with every fries order you need a burger. (Well actually the burger comes with fries, not that the fries comes with the burger, but same diff lol). I tried the boar burger just because I never had boar before. It was good but...perhaps uneventful. Maybe a regular burger would have been more flavorful. They also have a decent selection of brews. I wish they had more local beers to choose from: as much as I enjoy a Shock Top I prefer trying something local when I travel so I wished there were more options than the couple they provided, but it was enough for me to find one that I was okay with. Great food. Great atmosphere. Definitely recommend! We went around 8pm on a Tuesday night - which can be challenging because a number of Canmore restaurants close on Monday/Tuesday. The place was hopping, so it took a few minutes to get a table. But they had heaters in the doorway and on the patio for anyone waiting (we were also here during a very cold snap). Service was positive and helpful. And the food was terrific. My husband had the bison burger, which he demolished before I could try it. His side of sweet potato fries was enough for two people. My daughter had the buffalo mac and cheese, which was awesome - with a really nice kick. And I had fish tacos with their butternut squash salad. Both were excellent - I'd happily go back for an entree size of the salad. For three of us, with a beer each, the bill came to about $100. Similar pricing to an Earls or Joeys. The ambience was great though. Lots of larger tables that seated 8 people - would be terrific for a group of friends after a day of skiing. The seating was pretty close together, but even though it always packed, we had no trouble hearing each other. There were lots of cool foodie options on the menu (ie definitely not a boring burger and beer kind of place). Came here on a Wednesday night after a day of hiking with the family - it was quite busy for a 7 pm dinner. The patio seating looked really nice, but we opted to eat inside. Street parking only, but there was plenty so no problems with that. We ordered the following to share: Crab and Sweet Potato Dip: Served warm, the dip was quite good with the pita bread they provided. Didn't get much taste of the sweet potato since the cream cheese over powered it, but the crab came through. Poutine with Pork Belly: Really good, though requires some mixing since the gravy is at the bottom - I think they do this so the fries stay crispy. The pork belly is super crispy, like lechon kawali, and went really well with the potatoes and gravy. Wish they had added more cheese curds! Ahi Tuna Katsu: Favorite dish of the night and so clever! I'm not one for ahi tuna at restaurants... but the concept was so well executed. They wrapped the raw tuna in seaweed then covered in panko and deep fried it like a pork katsu - however the tuna was still raw in the center. It was a great contrast between the crispy panko breading and the soft tuna... however the wrapped seaweed gave some great salty flavor to the fish! Not often I get to see a raw fish katsu! Fried Brussel Sprouts: These are literally fried to a tasty crisp - makes for a great side dish. They have a great char to them and are drizzled with a tasty chipotle aioli. Pitcher of Green Sangria: Quite good... though I didn't taste much if any alcohol. It reminded me of a fruity cucumber soda or a green agua fresca. If you're not a fan of a sweet sangria, then this isn't for you. The food here is really good, but the service was a disappointment - hence the 1 star removed. It took forever to get our orders and our food. I get that this is a touristy spot and the prices are high... but that's no reason to leave customers hanging. With drinks they were quick - our pitcher of sangria was given in like 5 minutes. The food literally took 40 minutes... I had to check in with the waiter after 20 minutes if our order had been lost, and he informed me that food was taking 40-50 minutes to come out of the kitchen. Though he apologized, I wish they had warned us beforehand of how long the food would take when we ordered. I didn't appreciate having the sangria watered down by melting ice by the time the food finally arrived. We weren't the only ones agitated by the wait for food - as I looked around, other customers were asking what happened to their orders.
