Earlier that day, we had lunch at a Japanese udon restaurant in Japantown, and to our surprise, when we came to Tataki for dinner, we were greeted by the same wonderful server, Jane! Apparently we managed to pick not one, but two restaurants she works at on the very same day. Jane recognized us right away and was just as warm, friendly, and attentive as she had been at lunch. Her genuine hospitality made us feel so welcome and added an extra special touch to our evening. As for the food--everything was beautifully presented and incredibly fresh. We ordered three different dishes, and each one was delicious. The sushi rolls were creative without being overcomplicated, and the sashimi was buttery, fresh, and paired perfectly with the light citrusy flavors and garnishes. You can really tell the chefs put care into both the taste and presentation. Great food, cozy atmosphere, and outstanding service from Jane. My boyfriend and I have tried to come for happy hour twice now and both times we were unsuccessful in getting seated before 6:30pm. I highly recommend making a reservation if you are trying to do happy hour, it has been packed every time we've gone from 4:30-6:30pm, even in the middle of the week. They have it every day and it's a good deal. I'll have to take my own advice and make a reservation next time lol. By 7pm, the restaurant was pretty empty after the happy hour rush. Service was nice, everyone was attentive and nice and the music was a good background level of chill house and wasn't obnoxiously loud pop like many other places. The meal started off on a good vibe. We started with miso soup and tempura. The soup had a nice miso flavor, but I wish there was more tofu and seaweed. The pieces of daikon in there were interesting, I've never had miso soup from a sushi restaurant with that in there. The tempura was really good, and I liked the option of the tempura sauce and seasoned salt to flavor the pieces. My boyfriend and I liked the sweet potato and eggplant pieces the most. The shrimp was also slightly different than expected, with a crispy panko crust instead of the standard tempura coating. I liked this change as it stayed crispy as we ate the rest of the tempura first! For sushi, we ordered the golden state roll and the deluxe 12 piece nigiri tasting. The roll came out first, and I was pleasantly surprised by this one. It was super unique with the matchsticks of apple included in the inside of the roll. The spicy scallop was sooo good and I loved the lightly seared albacore on top. The yuzu tobiko added a nice citrus flavor that went well with the apple and contrasted with the spice from the scallop. It was such an inventive roll and made me want to explore more of their menu. The deluxe 12 piece tasting was a feast for the eyes and mouth! It was presented so beautifully, and I was ready to dig in. Every piece of fish was delicious, with my boyfriend and I loving the scallop, amaebi, hamachi, and saba. There were more that I didn't know the name of, but they were all so fresh, with a good balance with lighter and leaner fishes and heavier buttery cuts. The rice and fish portions are definitely on the smaller side, but I still appreciated how fresh and expertly prepared each piece of nigiri was. I was pleasantly surprised by this meal, everything was really good, with a slight twist on what you might expect from a neighborhood sushi spot. As a walk-in, we were told we would have to vacate our table within 1 hr but thankfully they didn't end up pushing us out. We came at five which is during their happy hour (4-6:30 every day) and only ate items from the happy hour menu. i'd say it's decent, it's cool that they have different fish besides the typical salmon and tuna nigiri so you're able to try different raw fish. The pricing is decent and the sushi was fresh & satisfied the sushi craving, but wasn't anything special. The sushi rice was flavorful and paired well with the fish, but I wish the seaweed wrapping the hand rolls were more crispy. They tasted almost a little bit stale & just cheap store-bought packaged seaweed. My friend and I are avid happy hour goers and Tataki piqued our interest for that reason! We both work in San Francisco and pass by this place on occasionally so we're curious. I will say, not many restaurants offer sushi on their happy hour menu so that's why this spot is popping, but honestly it's just okay. Their happy hour runs from 4:30-6:30 p.m. everyday which is one of the later ones in the city. It's also popular and loud inside so I recommend coming early or making reservations which we did through Yelp. They also serve lunch and dinner. Since we came for happy hour we ordered off that menu. We got: Nasu Agebitashi, Shiro Maguro Nigiri, Suzuki Nigiri, and an Artic Char and Avocado Roll. Plus a Kingfisher Roll and Karaage from the regular menu. My favorite was the nasu agebitashi which was a soft and lightly marinated eggplant and zucchini dish. I could eat plates of these and not get tired. I found both my nigiris to be underwhelming as the taste and texture of the fish seemed off. The roll we had was decent but didn't stand out. I can understand why people come here as the pricing for the portions of sushi is relatively affordable but nothing more. Tataki is located right next to the famous B Patisserie off of California street. Parking is street and metered only. This is a spot I'd return to for happy hour but wouldn't dine in for a regular lunch or dinner. I'm glad I got to try it and look forward to finding other happy hour spots in the city. read more
