Tasty Pot is always a solid choice, especially on a cold day! I usually get the Beef Hot Soup in medium and then add chili oil (on the table) to make it the exact spice level I'm feeling that day. Side note: the chili salt on the table is also very tasty. I know the idea is to order individual hot pots, but one bowl is enough for two people to share, especially since the server adds extra broth to your dish when you're running low on soup. If you share, the price for the hot pot is very reasonable ($10-13 post tax per person, depending on how much you tip). I would also get the free side of rice since some of the soups already come with vermicelli too, plus the rice is more filling. Service: The food comes out quickly, so it's a short wait. Bathrooms are relatively clean but do note that there is only one stall so sometimes there's a bit of a wait. As a former student at UC Berkeley, Tasty Pot is one of my go-to restaurants to cure a hangover. Pho is usually my go-to, but the pho places around the area are below average. As a broke college student, Tasty Pot can be a bit pricey, but I think it's always a delightful experience since food never disappoints and service is always above average. I am not a fan of seafood, so I always opt in for the Cheesy Milk Soup base, which is really tasty. I like how when you're running low on soup, you can always ask for more, thus I always leave this place really full! I also like how I can control the heat of the soup by simply adjusting the bottom of the pot to cover the fire. This place can get busy during peak dinner hours, but wait time is not much of a pain. Individual sized hot pot that still can boast of a sizable portion for a fair price (personally I feel like the portion could still feed two people easily). You order from your phone so if you have questions make sure to either flag a person down or ask when they come by with your cup of tea! Even for a digital ordering system they're still very attentive (which is great if you have a food allergy, there's signage everywhere encouraging you to check with staff on what has the allergen in question) and overall provide fast service. The restaurant is open for lunch, closes, and then reopens for dinner. It had two levels of seating. We entered and was instructed to sit at one of the tables there but there was also stairs leading up to another section of seating. When seated, you'll find a QR Code to scan. That leads you to order from your phone. I knew the veg option was vegan. That's what I went with with the addition of instant noodles. Christopher, on the other hand, did all these adjustments to his and there is a "special request" you can press for that. Iced tea in plastic cups were also brought to us. The hot pots are individual so you each get your own soup rather than sharing a big pot. When it comes the server lights underneath the bowl and it kept going for the duration of our meal, keeping the soup hot. When the broth was low, our server poured water into our bowls to add more to the dwindling broth. (The veggie broth is water based). Service was good.. Although I'm not adventurous enough to try out many different flavors of the Taiwanese hot pot options (I'm basic in choosing mainly Beef), I believe they're probably all great. This Tasty Pot location is a bit small, but they make it up with seating on the second floor. This is probably the busiest location I had been to in the Bay Area because of all the students. There is always a long line out of the door and a long wait. I tried coming here a few times, but no luck - the line went around the corner. Service is eh here and it is a bit unorganized as well. The one time I did get lucky, I came here 20-30 minutes before they opened back up for dinner, so my friends and I were first in line. Like most other locations, I order my usual - the Japanese Miso. I realize now that the Berkeley location of tasty pot has really really watered down broth. It is nowhere as flavorful or delicious as the SF location. One star for how gross I feel when I was there -(multi-purpose gloves). Two stars for decent food and service. I watched her the entire time I was there since I would see everything from where I was sitting. Is there only 1 pair of gloves per worker?? The only good thing I saw was that she washed a pot at the sink (at least the gloves got some rinse). And she washed her hands (with gloves on) once. I had the Sichuan soup here with extra soba noodles. The pot was boiling the whole time which may be normal but it was too hot (temp wise) to eat. So I waited for my friend to finish her soup and we got it to go. The other tricky part for this place is you order everything from the QR code that takes you to a link. I should have taken it as a warning to not eat here when they didn't ask for my COVID vaccine card. I could have also left when they brought me out a dirty spoon. However, my craving for a warm bowl of soup clouded my better judgement. I mean who doesn't love a warm bowl of soup when it's cold and rainy outside? My husband and I brought our boys and parents out to eat and ordered two bowls of beef hot pot (mild), one 3 cheesy milk hot soup (medium), one Japanese miso hot soup, and two milk teas. Now the tables here are tiny, like they barely fit 4 people, let alone a party of 6! However, they only had tables of 4 and we made it work. When a table for 2 beside us opened up, we asked if we could combine that table with ours so we can have more room to eat and the boiling soup wouldn't spill on our kids. The boss lady informed us that they couldn't because they were going to close the upstairs and they would need that table. Rewind to the end of our dinner, they never closed the upstairs and the table beside us remained empty the entire night... Now for the soups, I ordered a mild spicy so I could share with my kids, but the soup was so spicy I even thought it was hot and my spice tolerance is pretty high. My father (who can only do very mild spicy) looked like he just walked in the rain by the end of the meal since he was sweating so much for the spice. I will say the portions were good and I am normally a fan of the Tasty Pot franchise. This location just fell very short. It was very disappointing. The saddest part was my poor excuse for milk tea. My husband and I both ordered milk tea, mine with boba and his without. For $5.25, I expected something that tasted better than watered down milk and day old, disintegrated, flavorless boba. Needless to say, I did not finish my drink. I will NEVER come back here again and STRONGLY advise you take my experience into consideration. Don't say I didn't warn you. Also, we came at the end of the night and when we paid in cash they said they didn't have change and they would just keep it as tip... I guess that's how they get bigger tips? The Tasty Pot is a pretty solid chain of Chinese hot pot places with several in the Bay Area at least. The Berkeley location is right in the center of Downtown Berkeley and right next to the UC Berkeley campus, which is a high traffic area although not always a good place to find parking. Tasty Pot has a set of different pre set pots ranging from $8-$12, with the choice of rice or noodles. You can add on extra ingredients but I haven't felt a need to add on anything. I enjoy the Thai pot, and the veggie pot. They will periodically add soup to your pot it the water gets low. You can get free rewards on FiveStar based on the number of pots purchased. Heard lots of things about this place from other locals and students, so I obviously had to come and try it. We came in just before closing and got seated right away. We were served cold ice tea while waiting and our food came out shortly after. While I ordered the very spicy option, I found that the soup itself was a bit diluted and not the way that I had ordered. In addition, you can't really turn off the flame burner underneath the pot, and so we found that the soup had to be eaten quickly, or else it kept evaporating and not giving enough time for some of the ingredients to adequately cook. Overall, while the dish wasn't bad, I wish that the soup was spicier, and that the flame could somehow be controlled. Albeit a bit pricey, still has heaping portions and includes iced tea for lunch. Got the beef pot for $15.99. I came here with a group of 5 people and it was a bit cramped. I'd recommend having a maximum group size of 4 due to the way seating works. The food was super filling and warm. I would highly recommend coming here on a cold day. Usually I go to the Fremont Tasty Pot but happened to be in Berkeley with 3 of my gal pals. The layout of this Tasty Pot is interesting, skinny with extra seating in the back half of the building. We were seated right away on a Sunday during lunch time. I ordered my usual - beef curry extra spicy with rice and it tasted the same as every other Tasty Pot I've been to - this is a good thing LOL. Something to note though is that the are VERY generous with their portions here, so much veggies and meat compares to Fremont. They gave black tea as the standard tea here, the Fremont location lets you choose between green or black. You have to ask for the dipping sauces here and they bring out the sauce in a little pre-packaged plastic container. Now exactly what sauce is in there, I don't know and I didn't ask but it tasted good! You also have to ask for chili oil and they bring over a bottle and squirt it into your sauce container for you. It wasn't until recently that I made another trip back here with a friend. There was quite a line on a Wednesday night but it looked longer than it was. The waitress told the party after us it would be about a 10 minute wait. We waited about 10 minutes and was seated. They let you order while waiting in line so when you are seated the item comes pretty quick. I went to Boiling point and wanted the Japanese Miso however they stopped selling it. I ended up getting it here at Tasty Pot. Let me tell you - it definitely hit the craving! I was so happy! They also let you substitute the meat or any item you want for an additional price. I switched the pork to lamb. The serving size was huge. I would definitely come back here for the Japanese Miso Hot pot again. The Japanese Miso was $19.99. I haven't been to this Tasty Pot location in a while. I got my usual: Healthy Veggie Hot Soup with the Thai Base, Vermicelli Noodles, and Very Spicy. My food was great -- the spice level was as expected (less spicy than the SF location, around the same as the Concord location). For some reason, mine came in a bowl bigger than normal (see picture), but I'm not complaining haha. We sat in the very back of the restaurant, where it was nice and quiet. My friends got the Beef Hot Soup (sub Veggie Broth, not spicy) and the Curry Flavor Hot Soup (mild). The one who got the Beef Hot Soup had issues with the fire not running properly, so the veggies didn't really cook until we asked for a staff member to relight it. The other who got the Curry Hot Soup said that it was way too spicy for them, despite ordering mild. It wasn't that busy when we went (a Monday night), but one of the staff members seemed a bit overwhelmed. They almost tripped going up the stairs towards the back and almost bumped into us while holding some bowls of hot soup. The restaurant is filled with college kids which is not surprising given its proximity to UCB. I ordered the #1 beef pot with medium spicy and a half and half boba. I literally finished all the meats under 10 minutes. Sure I was hungry AF but there was not much real meaty stuff in the pot to begin with! They put them on the surface to make the pot appear like it's full of meat when it's actually not. It has tons of cabbage underneath. They should re-name it "cabbage pot"!! The side rice was a bit hard so I hope it's not leftover rice. But I ate it anyway b/c again I was hungry AF. The boba was $4.75 which was totally not worth it. It was not sweet enough and the tapioca balls were undercooked and hella hard. The total came out to be $25-ish including tips. AND I was barely full!! Compared to the awesome meal I had in the Tasty Pot in SF, this was a letdown. I ordered the same beef pot before and almost couldn't finish it. Hours here are also odd. They close at 9:15pm. What?! It was pouring outside, and we waited in line under a tiny overhang, and thankfully the waiter had us scan the QR code to order our food beforehand so we could eat right away. The food was good. We ordered the Taiwanese Spicy, Miso, Curry, and Beef Hot. The flavors were all there, and there were a variety of ingredients in the soup. The rice portions were much more generous than the location in Walnut Creek, as well as the reusable utensils. One thing I should mention however is the window open in the back. After standing in the rain for so long, we were freezing, and it didn't help that the window was wide open. However for covid guidelines, I could understand why that was the case. read more
