    free black tea for lunch

very solid place :-) i always come in when im craving something soupy as i like to get the beef hot pot! it comes w a lot of toppings and actually quite a lot of beef as well. usually i opt to get the rice as a side since theres vermicelli included in the pot already (which is a big plus because i get the best of both worlds). its basically self seating when it's empty and you can just scan the qr code to order so not that much interaction is needed - i usually will maybe ask for an extra broth refill when its running low or for them to turn off the heat i wish they had caps for their sauce containers for when i do take out :( bc i love their sesame sauce... overall, v yummy easy meal (though i think i still prefer boiling point)

Food: This is a different branch I've been and the quality is pretty stable. I had Taiwanese Supreme Spicy Soup with medium spicy this time, and if you're an Asian, this spiciness is right around the level you can enjoy the hot soup. Very delicious! Service: Order with QR Code, and the staff is helpful as well. Ambiance: the restaurant is more of a medium-small spot with casual vibe but clean and nice. Definitely a place for students after school.

(July 2024) Cheesy Milk Hot Soup

===TL;DR=== - #3 Cheesy milk hot soup w/ vermicelli - #1 Beef hot soup w/ rice ===TMI=== First time at this location, no wait for a Saturday afternoon. Pretty spacious place with a hole in the wall feeling since it's off the main street. They serve you with their house classic green iced tea and you order off their QR code. I got my favorite cheesy milk pot but in the very spicy level! Milky glory, -salivates-. If you're lactose intolerant, highly recommend the beef pot, a signature classic that you can't go wrong with. Self served sauce is on the side for easy access if you want to amp up the flavors. Overall, I still like their other chains more.

Came here during lunch on a Sunday. It wasn't so busy and I got seated immediately. You order through a QR code. I go the cheesy milk soup and got a few things removed that I don't eat. I added ramen and egg. The dish comes with vermicelli noodles, so I thought when I ordered ramen it would sub out the other noodle. Unfortunately, there were vermicelli noodles already in my bowl. I like vermicelli, but not with hot pot. The downside is they do not do substitutions here. Also, the price is on the high side. I paid $24 for everything. For that price, I can grab ayce hot pot for less on a weekday.

The perfect cozy meal for a cold, windy day in Berkeley. I really enjoyed the experience of individual hot pots. Solid ingredient variety and generous portion size, enough to last me two meals. Additional customization would be nice, but I was happy with what was provided.

Friend was in the mood for soup, so we got soup! Came for lunch and got seated in their upstairs section. Lunch comes with sweet tea which is a great addition to the meal. I ordered their Taiwanese Supreme Spicy Hot Soup (still not spicy enough for me!) while my friend opted for their lamb hot soup. They were both sizable portions and stayed hot through the meal thanks to the burner underneath. Food was tasty and each soup has a wide variety of ingredients. They have soybean paste on the side which always elevates a hotpot meal. The atmosphere is pretty casual and just slightly cramped, but worth it since there's not many other comparable options in the area. They also come around with refills for soup when it evaporates/you eat too much of it.

I didn't feel like cooking so I got this tasty seafood hot pot delivered to me ! It arrived piping hot and exactly as I had ordered it online. You can get these hot pot bowls with either rice, vermicelli noodles or ramen noodles and you can request the degree of hotness you would like but keep in mind.. the mild is still pretty zippy for me at least. The broth was very tasty and I had leftovers for the next day! Definitely will be going back !

Good experience and the first time we've ever had hot pot come with everything already in it. The beef hot soup had really great flavors with so many things in the soup. The Sichuan hot soup was SUPER spicy; too spicy for me, but great if you like very, very, very spicy foods. I would have preferred to quick dip and cook the beef because it got overcooked from sitting in the soup for too long. Other items in the soup were great like the fish balls, meat balls, imitation crab meat, veggies, and vermicelli noodles. There was a side sauce that was really yummy for dipping the beef and other meats. Service was pretty good and quick. Water and soup was refilled consistently. Ambiance felt like a mom & pop shop making it feel very authentic and fun.

Came to the Berkeley location for the first time. Pretty close to campus, cozy space. The portion size is very good for the price. My friend and I are both very full. It comes with a side or rice or vermicelli, but each pot already has some so it's a nice extra. You order with a QR code and they come around to refill soup and water. Service was also pretty good.

The inside dining space is minimalistic but chic. You can also eat at the counter by the bar. Outdoor dining is plentiful, and with heat lamps and string lights it is a lively option. The restaurant's philosophy is to be inclusive and many of their staff are from the LGBTQ community. The staff were super friendly and service-focused when we were there, adding to our dining experience. As for the food, the Taiwanese dishes here do not adhere to a traditional recipe, but rather it is Taiwanese cuisine with a modern twist. The Lou Rou Fan, for example, does not feature a stewed egg or mustard greens that would be standard at other Taiwanese eateries. Those looking for stinky tofu would be disappointed in not finding it here. What we did tried, however, were more like upscaled Taiwanese flavor-inspired dishes. We started with the grilled whole squid with house side pickle, and the Dou Bao (layered tofu sheet). The squid was excellent with the smoky grilled taste and we loved the perfectly fermented Chinese kimchee. The Dou Bao was unique in that the tofu sheets were served grilled, rather than the chilled wet version I am used to. Following the server's recommendation, we had the bamboo shoots rice soup claypot, which was homey and large enough for sharing. We loved the Shrimp with Specialty Tofu Sauce Noodle. The tofu sauce was creamy and garlicky. The shrimps were fresh and crisp. Fried chicken is a Taiwanese specialty, and the Pepper Numbing Chicken Culet did not disappoint. The chicken was perfectly fried but the meat remained tender and moist. The Taiwanese sweet pepper numbing sauce was great over the fried chicken, and in fact, it is pretty much good over anything. The Taiwanese Minced-Pork Noodle is like a Dan Dan noodle, with fermented bean paste sourced from Taiwan. We were lucky that on our visit they have the Taiwanese Twins Donuts, which were like beignets, but made from sough naturally cultivated in house for 3 days. This was really yummy. You have to order the soft serves, which was named by SF Chronicle as one of the best soft serves in the Bay Area. We tried the black sesame oil with sea salt flakes, and also the plum sauce version. Both were delicious.

I ordered through a tablet where I ordered and paid first. Refreshments were a plenty with my own pitcher of water! I ordered the house special noodles with bone ribs, spicy, and also the cucumber salad. Both were amazing!! The cucumber was worth the $7.99 since they use large portions of high quality cucumbers. The broth of the noodle soup was amazing also! Never, have I had Chinese inspired noodle soups like this before. It was rich and deep with flavor. The dried peppers and the nuts gave it a good texture and you can taste the freshness of the noodles. The bone on Ribs were so tender and they gave a generous amount. So perfect! It's actually a popular, higher-end Chinese restaurant in downtown Berkeley, and judging by the number of people waiting to be seated on a weekend only 30 minutes after opening, it clearly does very well. One note: I often see long weekend lines forming even before opening, so I'd definitely recommend making a reservation or arriving early. We came here with one thing in mind: Peking duck. It was prepared beautifully, with the exact nostalgic flavor and crispy skin I was hoping for. I also loved the way they presented the thin pancakes--half-folded and slightly overlapping each other--so you didn't have to worry about peeling each layer apart and accidentally ripping them. The dipping sauce and green onions were provided on the side, though I do wish they included thinly sliced cucumber to complete the experience. My husband also ordered the fish, which turned out soft, delicate, and delicious. It was a nice complement to the duck and rounded out the meal really well. My only real critique of Great China is the pricing. You're definitely paying a premium here, but the food does taste authentic and well-executed. Given the limited competition in the area, I can see why it feels justifiable if you live nearby. That said, it may not be as worth the splurge for people who already have easy access to more traditional, old-school Chinese restaurants.
