There were no customers, we just watched her wash a ton of dishes for 10 minutes before starting on our drinks. I got the avocado smoothie, which came with a sweetness level request. 100% was recommended, so I picked that. I watched her literally just put milk, avocado, and ice into a blender. No sweetener such as condensed milk like I expected. As expected, there was absolutely no sweetness in the drink, just milky avocado slush. My husband got a house milk tea with boba, and it was extremely flavorless. Tasted really sweet, but you couldn't really taste the tea at all. Honey boba wasn't bad, not the worst we've tried. Entrance looks typical of a pharmacy. Offerings: (drinks & edibles): smoothies, special/classical milk teas, sea salt, cheese cream, matcha, premium mountain tea, fresh fruit tea & sweet cheese crema, toppings... Sips: roasted Oolong tea (5.50) as is. Forgot to adjust ice/sugar. Choose a glass bottle over a plastic cup. -slightly too sweet, ice level too much. My fault. This review is not because of the milk tea. I never got to try it. I wanted to but when I went in there, there was a guy at the counter on his phone. He's the dark figure in the picture. He didn't move from that position the whole time I walked in. That's weird because when I worked retail, I put my eyes on everyone who walked in. Safety measure... He clearly worked there and was ignoring me big time. A woman came out from the back did something and went back behind the closed door. Again, no greeting or acknowledgement. So, they either 1. don't serve black people 2. hate their jobs so much that they aren't even trying 3. related to the owner/manager and can get away with doing nothing 4. he is so addicted to his technology that he can't bother to do the most basic requirements of his job The place was nice and clean, but if no one is eating or ordering from them, that could be a reason. No service, no sales, no need to clean. But it made me sad because I grew up in the area and in high school spent every summer taking classes at UC Berkeley through a high school program. While in college, I came to UCB to use the library or to attend the statewide meetings for an organization that I belonged to. I have never gone into a place in that area and not been greeted. Actually, there was one experience that I wrote about, but that happened within the last five years and the store owner reached out to me to tell me that they let the person go. I don't like or want to spend money with people who don't acknowledge my existence. And there are too many boba places in the area to want to hang all of my boba hopes and dreams on them. This Plentea is located close to UC Berkeley and they are one of the many boba spots in this vicinity. Parking is a bit difficult in this area, but they are located right outside of a parking garage. There is only one kiosk to order from, so sometimes it may take awhile to order and there are usually only 2 people working, so drinks may take awhile. My friends wanted to their glass bottles, so we stopped by. We ordered their Jasmine Milk Tea with boba & grass jelly, Mango Green Tea with lychee jelly, and Matcha Smoothie. A solid boba shop that uses fresh ingredients. The Caramel Smoothie with boba was our family's repeated favorite. I could see why. It could easily become too sweet, but it tread the line perfectly well, being tasty, creamy, and not too sweet. I ordered the Grapefruit bubble tea, and I LOVED that it was made with real grapefruit juice where you could feel the texture of the pulp. This boba tea could easily fall into the syrupy sweet trap, but, no, it emerged victorious! When we came in, it was a bit later. This location in Berkeley is pretty small, and doesn't have much seating or waiting space inside the shop itself. I had a jasmine milk tea with boba, and asked for 75% sweetness. When I got the drink, it looked like it was mostly milk, without much tea at all. The taste ended up being more like water than milk OR tea, and it made for a fairly bad experience. Sure, the drinks may be pricey (esp if you get a fruit smoothie) but I like that most, if not all, fruit drinks are from fresh fruit. So I would highly recommend a fruit drink of some sort, but I also adore their tea with sea salt crema, always hits the spot. Post-COVID, I don't think they have a lounge area anymore, so the seating, if you will are a few high chairs - and that, probably for waiting customers. Most of all, given Berkeley's generous selection of tea places, I like their resuable glass containers. I think I can say that they started this before reusuable containers were more commonplace (even though COVID seemed to backslide these efforts) so I applaud their foresight! Plus, the glass containers are also good for making other drinks at home. In retrospect, I am just glad that they are operating again despite some difficulty before the pandemic and of course, with everything that the actual pandemic brought on local businesses. I really had a boba craving last night but my favorite spots were closed and I wasn't near home base so I found this spot and decided to try it. All their fruit drinks (my favs) were with GREEN tea and I only like black tea. I wish they had more black tea fruit options. To preface this, I'm a girl who likes her boba/drinks sweet. I never get less than 75% sweet. The Sea Salt Creama Oolong drink felt like a 50% sweet drink and honestly I should've figured because it's not a "sweet" oriented drink but once I shook it and the sea salt cream mixed in I did enjoy it. However, it didn't satisfy my craving, you know what I mean? Like I still craved boba after because it was good but wasn't what I wanted. I tried my partners classic milk tea and he got it 75% sweet and it wasn't bad. I think I'd have full enjoyed it if it was their version of 125% sweet because I feel 100% is very different here than my go to spots (and that's the most tricky part about boba sweetness). I am happy we got reuseable bottles out of this trip because I love making teas at home and would enjoy drinking them from this bottle. I would come again to try the Carmel milk and maybe some others. The boba pearls were definitely on the yummy side but I need to find my right drink here. I've technically been here once many years ago back when it was still new but all I remembered from that time was the hype over it since the glass bottles were a gimmick no other boba shop in the area had at the time. They do still advertise themselves as being eco-conscious not only with the option to use (and bring back for a small discount to reuse) the glass bottles but also with their sourcing of materials. I came back more recently and ordered a Nutella milk tea, in the glass bottle, cold, for pickup. Since I had placed the order via DoorDash, I didn't really have the option to bring my own water bottle and ask them to use that instead but it seems they may be willing to do that instead of you having to get the Plentea bottle. I'm not a big fan of Nutella but tried this more for the novelty and curiosity. Like Nutella, it's not really strong on the chocolate flavor but tastes more heavily of hazelnut and sugar. I like the nutty flavor, it almost reminds me of hojicha and other roasted teas. Only downside is I don't think the portion size is very big just from eyeballing the glass bottle, but of course I'm not very good at judging volume and most of the local boba places are more expensive nowadays too. read more
