I love eating hot pot on a cold day because the spicy broth warms me up. This is also a really convenient place because it's near Berkeley and it's affordable. The broth here is really flavorful and some of the best I've had. I got the Cheesy Milk Hot Soup because milky broth is actually really popular in Taiwan and this place is supposed to be a Taiwanese hotpot restaurant. I got it with a medium amount of spice but it wasn't spicy at all (I have a high spice tolerance). It's good to go lower on the spice because you can always add more with the free hot chili oil. The broth was very creamy but wasn't oily or heavy at all. It had a nice richness and complemented the meat and vegetables very well. Milky soup sounds weird, but you should try it because it's delicious. My only complaint with this place is that they don't give you much meat. Nestled in a side street if you see a line outside, you've arrived. As you peer through the window you can see that the place is packed. My parents used to tell me if a restaurant is busy and full of the type of food clientele, it can pretty much guarantee it's good and authentic. Three of us had different hot pots: lamb, beef and Taiwanese. We also had 3 different milk teas: Hokkaido, Sweet Milk and matcha rose milk tea. We all chose custard over boba. I really enjoyed my matcha rose drink / it was refreshingly sweet I was tempted to order one for the road. Water is refilled and each person gets their own hot pot. My friend and I were craving hot pot and I had not tried this kind of hot pot before. She ordered the Sichuan Flavor Hot Soup and I ordered the Seafood Lobster Hot Soup, as I'm pescatarian and love lobster. Both dishes were incredibly delicious - the soup had a lovely kick to it and there were so many ingredients, it was like digging for treasure! My seafood soup was wonderful, with clams, mussels, lobster, fish balls and many many other hidden gems. The vegetables inside the pot are always fresh and the meat is good - nothing special as it's not really marinated or seasoned and the tenderness is really determined by how long you leave it in the pot before you eat it - it's not A5 beef or anything. One thing I will note is that they give you a really large bowl of rice if you order rice but only a very small amount of vermicelli if you get that as your carb of choice. #1 Beef, Medium Spicy, with rice! #1 Beef, Medium Spicy, with rice! Can you tell which of the hot pots are my favorite at Tasty Pot? I've been to Tasty Pot a number of times and seem to always default to #1 beef. I'd say it's one of their better hot pots. I've had a few others, which were decent but nothing to write home about. One of the hot pots I didn't like was the curry flavored one - it was a bit bland for my taste. Usually when I come here, I also order a side of the spicy stinky tofu, which is nomnom good if you care for some of that "stank" (which I absolutely love!). The side "sauces" are also very good- in particular, the fermented bean sauce. This sauce mixed with their sweetened soy, with a dab of chili oil makes the best dipping sauce for hotpot! There is usually a wait for dinner, especially when it's cold and wintery outside. One of the nice things about Tasty Pot is that they take your order while you wait in line - that way when you sit, the food is just about ready. This is likely why the wait time is pretty short (~30 min during prime dinner times). Of note, dinner is more expensive than lunch. Also, parking is metered all around the area (meaning most surrounding parking is not free until after 6pm). Service here is bare bones - once you're seated and get your food, the service pretty much ends at that point. So if you need more broth, water, or napkins, you'll need to ask for it periodically. Tasty Pot has become one of my staples. I used to not like individual hot pots, but it's definitely grown on me (thanks to Tasty Pot!). I'll definitely be coming back. read more

I've eaten at the tasty pot in Seattle and this place is about on par (I think the portions are slightly bigger in the Seattle location from my memory). While not my favorite personal hot pot place, this place is a good alternative for around the Berkeley. The place is somewhat small with maybe like eight or so tables that seat two people and the majority of the larger four people and more tables on the second (elevated floor). One thing I liked was that they will have your table get set up and when they noted that will call your table so you can order. This helps so that by the time your table is seated the food can arrive in a timely manner. For my larger group of six people, the time between signing my name on the sheet til getting our food was a little less than 30 minutes with roughly four other tables of 4 - 6 ahead of us. Food-wise the meal is decent, nothing stand out but similar to the Tasty Pot in San Diego they give a lot but majority of that is actually napa cabbage and your general toppings above. I kind of wished they would give more meat cause for the price it is sufficient to get full but most of your meal is like an ounce or so of pork and remainder is napa cabbage. Soup broth is also a little bland, but if you order something with a mild or above there's a nice kick from the spice. I think for most people mild will be sufficient and medium is hotter than most can handle. It's weird there's no real finer grain for spice levels. Overall, it's a decent place but my review is more of a 3.5 star location. It has potential to be better but soup is somewhat bland and toppings are majority cabbage with some meat and fish balls here and there. Service is good though and they really speed up the ordering process so you're not left waiting which is appreciated. read more

My niece and I shared the Taiwanese supreme spicy hot pot in medium & we both really enjoyed it. It was the perfect amount of food for us since we still had a little bit of food left after we were both full. My son got the Sichuan flavor hot pot, which he said made his nose tingly so he ended up switching up with my nephew who ordered the Taiwanese supreme as well. I actually tasted the Sichuan broth--it was pretty tasty & the spice didn't bother me at all so I guess my son might have an allergic reaction to one of the ingredients in this broth. My brother wasn't hungry so he ended up sitting there just watching us eat, but he has had Tasty Pot before so he knows what it tastes like. If it's a cold and windy day, this place is easily one of my top picks. In the two times that I've been here, I've gotten the beef hot soup. It's got plenty of stuffing, a generous amount of soup (that you can ask to top up) and no MSG (because I didn't feel thirsty afterward). The broth of this soup is definitely chinese which fits well with the meat. I say this because the miso hot pot has a very different soup base which is more light and more japanese-like? Ordered the Japanese Miso hot soup and it was a wonderful mix of udon noodles with cabbage, crab legs, tofu, corn, seaweed, pork slices, and other stuff. I like my hot pot to not be overbearingly hot because then I can't really eat anything. So, there's a metal slider at the base of your portable stove so that if you move the slider to the right, it will cover the flame and lower the temperature of your hot pot.
