Usually I go to the Fremont Tasty Pot but happened to be in Berkeley with 3 of my gal pals. The layout of this Tasty Pot is interesting, skinny with extra seating in the back half of the building. We were seated right away on a Sunday during lunch time. I ordered my usual - beef curry extra spicy with rice and it tasted the same as every other Tasty Pot I've been to - this is a good thing LOL. Something to note though is that the are VERY generous with their portions here, so much veggies and meat compares to Fremont. They gave black tea as the standard tea here, the Fremont location lets you choose between green or black. You have to ask for the dipping sauces here and they bring out the sauce in a little pre-packaged plastic container. Now exactly what sauce is in there, I don't know and I didn't ask but it tasted good! You also have to ask for chili oil and they bring over a bottle and squirt it into your sauce container for you. I went to this location when it first opened and I thought it was okay. I much preferred boiling point in south bay when I visited this location. It wasn't until recently that I made another trip back here with a friend. There was quite a line on a Wednesday night but it looked longer than it was. The waitress told the party after us it would be about a 10 minute wait. We waited about 10 minutes and was seated. They let you order while waiting in line so when you are seated the item comes pretty quick. I went to Boiling point and wanted the Japanese Miso however they stopped selling it. I ended up getting it here at Tasty Pot. Let me tell you - it definitely hit the craving! I was so happy! They also let you substitute the meat or any item you want for an additional price. I switched the pork to lamb. The serving size was huge. I would definitely come back here for the Japanese Miso Hot pot again. The Japanese Miso was $19.99. As SKIMPY as it gets! I've had Tasty Pot in Inner Richmond in the city before and loved it so I was excited to discover that they have another location in Berkeley near me. Came here for dinner on a Friday. The neighborhood in downtown Berkeley is super hard to find parking. It took me 20 mins. The restaurant is filled with college kids which is not surprising given its proximity to UCB. I ordered the #1 beef pot with medium spicy and a half and half boba. I literally finished all the meats under 10 minutes. Sure I was hungry AF but there was not much real meaty stuff in the pot to begin with! They put them on the surface to make the pot appear like it's full of meat when it's actually not. It has tons of cabbage underneath. They should re-name it "cabbage pot"!! The side rice was a bit hard so I hope it's not leftover rice. But I ate it anyway b/c again I was hungry AF. The boba was $4.75 which was totally not worth it. It was not sweet enough and the tapioca balls were undercooked and hella hard. The total came out to be $25-ish including tips. AND I was barely full!! Compared to the awesome meal I had in the Tasty Pot in SF, this was a letdown. I ordered the same beef pot before and almost couldn't finish it. Hours here are also odd. They close at 9:15pm. What?! Pretty good pricing for the serving size. Limited parking, I would recommend to park in a complex and walk to the location. Small place, limited seating especially on weekend evenings when everyone is trying to get their fix of some hotpot. Had to wait outside for a good 20-30 minutes before some spots opened up. Service here is good, the workers are very attentive to your needs. I got the Tom Yum seafood flavor pot and there was lots of shrimps, crab legs, and clams included so I was satisfied with the price. A good place to have food with friends and family. We ordered the Taiwanese Spicy, Miso, Curry, and Beef Hot. The flavors were all there, and there were a variety of ingredients in the soup. Been wanting to try this place ever since I found out there was hotpot in Berkeley after I graduated, right next to Landmark's California Theater. It was a cold day whenever I came in, perfect hotpot weather. My favorite is the Taiwanese Supreme Spicy Hot Soup and the Stinky Tofu soup, so I generally choose those. Usually I love ramen with my hotpot and usually get it at any hotpot place I go to. Here, the ramen was nothing special. It doesn't have that nice, crisp texture that I usually expect with all my hotpot ramen. Stinky tofu came out white and much blander than what I'm used to. I'm used to the brown variant with a stronger and pungent taste and smell. I also really wanted to try the Rose Matcha Latte Boba ever since I saw it on the menu from day one. It looked so pretty and enticing, and I love anything with rose in it, I love matcha, and I love boba, so it seems like it's a winning combo. I didn't get it the first time I was here since I was full, so I decided to come back another day. Came back another day around 11:50pm one day, only to be told Boba isn't ready until around 12:30pm. What kind of place that serves boba doesn't have boba ready at opening? I told them I'd be back. Came back the next day, around 1:30pm, only to be told I needed to pay in cash if I wanted to take boba to go. Really? I was getting a bit annoyed with coming back for the boba and finding out reasons why I couldn't have it. When I came back out day after work on a rainy day around 5:00 or 5:30pm, I was instantly seated at a shared table. They asked me if that was okay, which I was totally fine with, since I didn't want to stand outside waiting in the rain. I got the Rose Matcha Latte with my Stinky Tofu hotpot. While the hotpot hit the spot (though it's not one of the best I've had), the Rose Matcha Latte felt like finally meeting a guy who looked great his in dating app profile, but didn't live up to his profile in person. It didn't look as pretty as the menu photo, and the taste was decent. Good, but nothing that made me squeal with delight, "Oh, this rose and matcha is so heavenly!" No, none of that. I guess if I really want hotpot while I'm in Berkeley, I'll come here. However, there are many other great hotpot restaurants all around the Bay Area, so if you have the choice, go elsewhere for more quality. read more

Don't drink the milk tea... First time at the Berkeley location and the food itself is around the same as the one in Newark. I came with 9 other friends here on a Friday night and all I can say is come early, this place fills up fast because there is not a lot of seating. We ordered 3 pots for 6 people, which is definitely plenty especially if you plan to get their free refills (pork broth?). 1. Seafood Fillet Hot Pot ($18.99) - What they mean by seafood is one crab leg and some clam shells. 2. Taiwanese Supreme Spicy Hot Pot ($16.99) - The better of the 3. We opted for less spicy which turned out to be the perfect amount and the "sour" level was spot on. Pretty authentic if you ask me. 3. Lamb Hot Pot ($13.99) - You could really taste the gamey-ness of the entire dish which, for me, I liked. Broth overall is amazing. 4. Hokkaido Milk Tea ($4.50) - DON'T DRINK THIS. First of all it tastes extremely watered down and the "milk" or whatever it is seemed expired. All my friends who drank this got a stomach ache afterwards, so disgusting. It scored high points in my category: portions, taste, and service. I came into the restaurant at a 45% hunger, and I left with around 98% full! For those who eat light, I suggest to share the "larger" sized pot with someone else, or eat the smallest sized pot. I'm not exactly sure if customers are allowed to take home leftovers. I didn't see anyone around me do that either. The ordering style is to pick a pot, choose between rice or vermicelli noodles. I ordered the vermicelli noodles because I prefer to eat pot dishes without rice. Since it was our first time there, I struggled to pick which dish to eat, so it took me longer to decide. It was nice, however, that the staff came by three times to see if we have decided on what to eat. They were quick when we asked for a plate to put in the clam, crab, and shrimp shells, and for broth seconds. I ordered the Kimchi Dumpling hot pot with a mild spice level. My family members, who decided to share a pot, ordered the Japanese miso (none for the spice). I should've ordered none spice level too because of my low spice tolerance, but the spice factor was strong! I had one coughing sessions and near the end, when vegetables that wrap the spicy oil around, got me drinking water after every bite. I'm planning to come next time, so that part, I will remember to do. Both broths were delicious, and the dashi was cooked very well. I wonder if it was because of the many fish and mushrooms that were cooked in the pot, but I was still hungry, I would've drank the broth. If I were to choose, I loved the miso soup more because - I like miso soup. Each pot contained a lot of meat, fish, shrimp, clam, tofu, age, mushrooms, and vegetables. The meat was cut thinly, so it cooked very well and required almost no chewing. I enjoyed eating each topping, and I feel that's the fun part about pot dishes. I did notice that the pot was a unique experience and different from the previous pot dishes we've eaten. It used a raised stove where the staff lit a fire underneath it. Unlike the others, the fire gradually weakened and extinguished. The benefits of this were that 1. it extinguished around the time when I was almost done and 2. it doesn't constantly cook and raise the salt content. However, I am a slow eater, so the fire went out while there was still 6/8 left - but that also meant I was able to eat the food directly from the pot. I really really liked Tasty Pot, and if we ever come by Berkeley again on a cold chilly night, I would come back and try their other dishes. read more

Tasty Pot is currently the only hot pot restaurant in Berkeley and I eat here every 1-3 months, takeout during Covid, because I'm a hot pot fiend. Compared to other hot pot restaurants I've been to, the broth here isn't as savory and the meat isn't sliced as thinly and is usually full of tough cuts. I wish the meat were higher quality and the additional toppings were more affordable. The portions as-is are good but sometimes I'm in the mood for some fish ball with roe or tendon and I don't want to pay $4-5 for it when I can spend $13 to get a whole extra pot. It doesn't feel worthwhile to pay for additional toppings when they cost 30-40% of a whole order. During pre-covid dine-in service, you would always get a free iced tea with your lunch which was nice. The tea was delicious and I'm sad it's not included with takeout lunches. However, they give a free soda with any takeout orders purchased through UberEats which is very nice of them! The turnaround and service is always speedy too. Pre-covid there would always be lines out the door but once you sat down, your food arrived very quickly. Always love going to Tasty Pot to grab a meal or two (since each meal is usually big enough for two people). But taking it to go vs dining in can be little bit different than other restaurants. When you dine in, you can have the pot heated at all times and keep the food warm right above the portable stove. Also, there are unlimited refills on the broth and dipping sauces while to-go don't have this perks. Yet they charge about the same price. Nevertheless, their food is bomb! Two thumbs up for me. When they brought this one out, it literally tasted like boiled water with some raw veggies in it. The broth literally had no flavor.
