There's now a Taste in Ghent! For those of you who don't know Taste, it's great. They have an awesome selection of sandwiches. It's a little overpriced, but really good quality. My personal favorite is to order the Inlet, their mozzarella and tomato sandwich, and add prosciutto to it. Delicious. You can also make your sandwich a combo with chips and a drink - I like to combine their lemonade with iced tea to make an Arnold Palmer. This Taste has a "drinkbar," which serves espresso drinks, smoothies, juices, wine, and beer. It looks pretty good and is something I'll be coming back to try. If you come here often, sign up for their rewards card - you'll get a free sandwich out of it, although it will take you a while. read more

Don't use Uber Eats for this location. The person who prepares the Uber Eats orders consistently forgets items: sides, dressings for salads, etc. We usually eat here all the time but the biggest issue I have is the ordering ahead option. Taste is just terrific, to me. They've got a nice variety of sandwiches and salads, plus the opportunity to design your own for a reasonable price. They also have a couple of soups, which I'm still excited to try--they tend to sell out frequently of these. One of my favorite things to take advantage of here is the drink bar. I love to stop by and get a latte when time allows. They also have a few smoothies, which I've been wanting to try, as well as beer and wine. Customer service is usually on point, although I have had one experience that was less than stellar--I came in close to closing and wasn't exactly received with open arms (hence the four stars). But usually, I use their online ordering system, which has always worked flawlessly for us. They also have a rewards program, where you can earn free sandwiches, soups, desserts, and more. They also have a gift section with lots of interesting selections. Additionally, there is a small freezer with frozen family-sized meals and frozen treats that are more unique, such as Lolly's ice cream. Yum! read more

Another great experience at Taste! I ordered one of my favorites, the chicken caesar wrap and it was really good! I did add the dressing that they give you for the Cobb salad and this made it even better! I love the taste of this wrap but the added dressing increases the flavor making it wow-worthy! For a side, I did the sweet potato chips and we split the tortellini pasta salad which was 50% on the to-go section! #winning! The fountain drinks are one of my favorite things about Taste and I had both the black cherry with my meal and the cream soda to go! Taste is the only place that I know of that has the Boylan sodas on the fountain versus in a bottle which is a huge perk! Given the pandemic, I've been hesitant to write this review, as I was a patron of this specific Taste (and others in the area) while I was staying with my parents during the onset of COVID-19. I don't know if my qualms were related to the pandemic, but I wanted to provide some feedback as I've been a customer of the brand since at least 2008, way back when their Norfolk location was on Colley Ave. Essentially every time I went to this location, I was left wanting for more or not as satisfied as I used to be when ordering Taste. I feel as the chain grows to new areas, and especially in newer locations like this one, quality has tremendously suffered. I used to LOVE the Tidewater sandwich, it's was my go-to, but more recently the chicken salad is haphazardly chopped (some small pieces and hunks of chicken) and loaded with mayo, to the point where I had to take a napkin to wipe off some of it off, because it was almost nauseating. The French bread seems to be consistently sliced thinner than it used to be, but I've noticed this change happening gradually over the years. I remember the days when I'd need two hands to hold a sandwich because it was so big. Maybe it's psychological, but I haven't grown in size. On one visit I ordered a simple custom sandwich - turkey, swiss, and hot house, similar to the Hilltop sandwich, and was disappointed by a very small portion of turkey and two measly cracker-sized slices of swiss for an entire sandwich. You'd think for a $8 custom sandwich without anything else, they could add just a little bit more cheese and meat to make it not look like a total #sadboylunch Also - I'm not sure if the pimento cheese recipe has changed, but it tasted more like mayo than anything else. I will note that my boyfriend LOVED his salads when we went there - but the topping choices for vegetarians were fairly limited, and there was little variety for what you can do with a salad there. Don't get me wrong - it's usually a delicious experience and the store itself is gorgeous, but for a $7-11 sandwich (which I used to be able to save half for the next day) barely covering my appetite in general, I've become more reluctant to come back here. If you are able, I'd recommend checking out the Hilltop or Oceanfront locations, as they seem to stick to the original methods for preparing food that aren't mayo-bombs or skimping on the toppings. Otherwise, this is a cute shop to pick up lunch when you're not in a major rush, as wait times can vary. YMMV, but I don't think I'll be making my Taste pilgrimage to this location the next time I am in the 757. read more

The first Taste Unlimited in Ghent opened in 1976 on Colley Avenue, and I became a regular when I moved to Ghent in 1992. It became my weekly source of Dave's Gourmet Insanity Hot Sauce, which I could not find anywhere else. They left Ghent and relocated to Hampton Boulevard in 2010. The new Taste Unlimited in Ghent opened last month in the former Blockbuster Video on 21st Street, next to Bangkok Garden. This is now their largest location with about 6,000 square feet of space, an enclosed outdoor patio, and a seating capacity of over 225 people. They've been doing a brisk and booming business and are usually packed during lunch. Parking can be a challenge. The new location includes a Borjo Drinkbar, which serves coffee and other specialty drinks and snacks. Borjo was first established in Norfolk in 2004 and joined the Taste family in 2016. The menu at Taste includes 18 Signature Sandwiches. Their Summer menu included 5 heated sandwiches and 13 unheated sandwiches. Their new Fall menu includes only 2 heated sandwiches and 16 unheated sandwiches. After five visits, I can report the following: THE GHENT: House Roasted Chicken Breast, Provolone, Roasted Red Peppers and Basil Mayo on Ciabatta. This is an unheated sandwich, and I ordered it to be eaten inside. Yet, it was delivered to my table tightly wrapped and sealed. I would expect this for a takeout order, but not when eating inside. It presented a sad and sickly appearance with a bland and lifeless taste. A sandwich named after Ghent surely deserves better than this. My Rating: 2 Stars. THE CATWICH: Cornbread Fried Catfish with Pickled Veggie Slaw and Lemon Remoulde on a Brioche Roll. This was a heated sandwich from the Summer menu and is not on the Fall menu. A small chunk of catfish delivered a nice crunchy texture and a bit of flavor, but not as fresh as I like. Only a few strands of the pickled veggie slaw peeked out of the bun. I found this one to be undersized and overpriced. My Rating: 3 Stars. THAI SALAD: House Roasted Chicken Breast, Red Cabbage, Shredded Carrots, Cucumber, Roasted Red Peppers, and Crushed Peanuts on Romaine, tossed with Thai Peanut Vinaigrette and Crunchy Noodles. Kudos for the young lady at the counter who told me up front they were out of red cabbage and asked me if I still wanted it. I ordered it anyway. The veggies delivered a healthful and pleasant taste. The peanut vinaigrette was flavorful. On the downside, the chicken left me with a dry and sterile taste with little or no seasoning. My Rating: 3.5 Stars. THE HECTOR: Bacon, Cage-Free Fried Egg, Cheddar, Avocado, and Week Knees Gochujang Sriracha on a Brioche Roll. This is one of their Signature Breakfast Sandwiches and is the tastiest menu item I've had here to date. The avocado was fresh and sparkled with flavor in combination with the other ingredients, pairing especially well with the crispy bacon.. I would have liked more of the Gochujang sauce. Otherwise, this one scored well with me and hit the spot. My Rating: 4.5 Stars. BRUNSWICK STEW: Any chance of a rally to a 4-star rating was snuffed out with this offering. It was served in an unsightly cardboard cup with a lid, even though I had ordered it to be eaten inside at my table. The taste of the stew was passable, but its presentation was a letdown. I like my soup served in a real bowl, made without plastic or cardboard. My Rating: 2.5 Stars. I stopped in again today to try their Butternut Squash Soup, which is a new addition for their Fall menu, but it was sold out. Curiously, their Facebook page features an attractive photo of this soup served in a bowl. But according to the menu, it is still served in a cup, just like with the Brunswick Stew. An impressive showcase of specialty gourmet foods and wines is a highlight of their store and well worth an extended tour. Speedy's Hot Sauces and their newly released Bloody Mary Mix are available here. Some of their items are overpriced. To cite one example, the GT brand of Kombucha drinks sells for $4.49 a bottle.They cost a dollar less at $3.49 a bottle at the nearby Harris Teeter. My favorite section is their sampler display of Taste Signature Specialty Nuts. Six different varieties are provided with a self-serve teaspoon for each one. If you are still hungry after your meal, you can help yourself to a spoonful of each and quickly become full. It worked for me. I like the bright and spacious atmosphere of the new Ghent location. Customer service has been exemplary and friendly.. Taste Unlimited has become a very streamlined and well oiled operation over the years. Their employees work hard and are well trained. But much of the food they serve has become too formulaic for my tastes. I want to see them step up their soup and sandwich game before I give them a higher rating. My scorecard shows a 3-star rating for now. I'll be back in a few months to see if they deserve a raise. In the meantime, so much for taste and so much for Taste. read more

Beautiful interior! Definitely my go to study spot in the years to come. I love the spaciousness and the wonderful amount of natural light this building lets in. I love this particular location! It's right in the heart of Ghent and it's huge! I came here on a Wednesday evening and had no wait. I was a bit disappointed they no longer have the crab cake sandwich on brioche, BUT I did try the shrimp roll and let me tell you....it was DELICIOUS! It also comes on a brioche roll with lettuce and tomato. It came with basil mayo and it was yummy!! I was in a hurry so I just grabbed an organic peach tea and sat down. My order was ready in about 5 minutes. The customer service was great. They were friendly and helpful in guiding me with what to order. First time here and out of the four I've been to (Suffolk, Newport News, Norfolk-Hampton Blvd and here) this is the most aesthetically pleasing one. I love that they have a Borjo coffee bar instead of just plain coffee. I got the Ghent sandwich -that took 20+ mins to get and crab chips. I also got the honey bee iced latte from the coffee bar. Opening a Taste in Ghent was a smart idea, as the entire area has undergone an economic and cultural revival over the past five years, whereas in the past an upscale restaurant / marketplace would not have been able to survive in the area. Taste has a beautiful outdoor seating area that's enclosed in a private corner of the building, making it the perfect place for a quiet meal with friends or a date. The high quality of the food and ingredients, from their delicious sandwiches (the simply prepared but always enticing Inlet mozzarella and tomato sandwich is a particular favorite) to their organic, highly nutritious smoothie and coffee bar Borjo makes for a holistic dining experience that will leave you satisfied. Taste also sells great beers from local breweries such as Smart Mouth and O'Connors, in addition to other tasty Virginia products such as assorted nuts, chocolates, jams, cheeses and wines. When you enter Taste, it's like going to a modern, wine and snack store - rows of simple, but eye candy nom noms. Reminds me of a simply done Cracker Barrel Store. Similar to Panera, you stand in line to place and order and then you find a seat to wait for your order. But the similarities stop there. The food here is just like the name...quite tasty. Simple presentation on a metal pan. Sandwiches wrapped in paper and salads in plastic that you can place in a recycle bin. I ordered the Thai salad and Brunswick Stew. Though both yummy, the two do not compliment each other. The wheat bread was warm and delicious. The Thai salad could have had more of a kick. I looked for sriracha, but one was not found. The Brunswick Stew was like a hearty beef stew. There was too much food! I ended up saving the stew for another day. The architectural design was modern, but cozy. I was mesmerized by the wall art, the pillars partially wrapped in bright white subway tiles, former garage door openings encased by many clear windows allowing for natural light to come through and the roof slightly covered in light honey wood beams. I am LOVING the new Taste location. The inside is so big and there's plenty of outside seating, which is a plus! I ate here for lunch during the week and it was pretty busy, so make sure you plan for this. I ordered the whole beach club with a side of chips. I noticed that there was no option to order half a sandwich in their fall menu (it was an option during the summer menu). The sandwich was very good. I would highly recommend this menu item to anyone who isn't sure what to order! The multigrain bread was fantastic and the mix of bacon with ham/turkey was an excellent combo. In total, I paid about $13 for the sandwich and chips. It's definitely on the pricer side, but completely worth every penny! The ingredients are fresh and the portion sizes are generous. My first time dining in at this location but I have been to the one at Hilltop many times. The Ghent location has been open for maybe a little over a year, and it's a lot bigger with about 6,000 square feet. They have the Borjo Drinkbar, where you can get espresso, coffee, and other drinks, including beer and wine! A breakfast menu is also available. Taste at Ghent offers table delivery so after you place your order you wait at your table and they will bring it out to you when it's ready. Although there are a lot of differences between the two locations, for now, Hilltop will still be my preferred location and for one reason only: their customer service. They just weren't as pleasant as I've experienced in the past with this business. The cashier was helpful when I asked about the bread and it was the same person that brought my food to me, which by the way I had no complaints about. But it was the female employee that was maintaining the dining area that rubbed me the wrong way. As I looked around, I saw other customers working from their laptop. So I looked to see if wi-fi was available and saw they had a guest network to join. I kindly asked her for the password and she says "Oh I don't know" and walked away...I watched her for a moment thinking she was going to another employee to ask but nope- she just continued on doing her own thing. Umm wtf she just straight left me hanging and I felt stupid just watching her thinking she was going to help me out. So I did feel a little salty upon leaving here. Taste is my favorite chain in the area by far. Any place with fresh ingredients, delicious sandwiches, and a huge variety of food and beverage options is automatically great in my book. Add in a collection of locally sourced retail products, kombucha on tap, and bar service, and you'll never get me to leave! I'm a frequent visitor to this location of Taste. The service can indeed be slow, but for me, the pleasant attitude of the staff and the quality of the food makes up for it. The space is large so there is always room to sit, both indoors and out on the patio, and I never feel rushed when I'm lingering with a book or laptop. I've had the Princess Anne and the Northender and loved both. These sandwiches are big and certainly filling! I usually ask for my sauces/condiments on the side because they do tend to be a little heavy-handed with the dressings. Their menu has seasonal options that rotate and keep things fresh. And I find that their prices, for the most part, are extremely reasonable (especially their specials). 3 of us from work decided to step out for lunch since we had a nice warm day this week and this is where we stopped. It wasn't really busy when we stepped in all of us had a sandwich, chips and a drink. For the three of us I felt the price was reasonable, and we all enjoyed sitting on the patio with the warm spring day. I really do not remember what everyone had, but we all were happy with our selections. Service was quick so it's not a problem getting in and out during your lunch break. I had never been here before, and actually didn't even know it was here, but now that I do I will come back. Sometimes all you need is just a good spot away from the desk to enjoy your lunch. I love the princess anne (havarti, roasted red peppers, avocado and dressing) but I add pimento cheese to it... they make a fantastic pimento cheese and sometimes I get a tub of it with toasts to snack on. I do enjoy a Taste of the good life. I've been to a few of the locations and the 21st street is my favorite. Nearly everything I've TasteD has been excellent and flavorful. I enjoy sitting and reading or writing with a refreshing glass of Prosecco or a cup of coffee and just enjoying the good life. The odd thing about all of the locations (and reason for only 3 stars) is the staff - young, unsure, limited vocabulary and knowledge of the menu, and sometimes just rude (perhaps unintentional, but no one likes their food tossed at them onto the table and for the server to snatch the table marker and wordlessly walk away). Just weird. And it's happened at different locations. Management may want to consider hiring mature staff that have lived a bit to know the good life. Just a suggestion. Second, I tried to call in advance to ask what the wait time was going to be and I got sent to voicemail even though when I arrived to the store I watched the cashiers taking multiple calls. The wait time sign they had our was 20 minutes and the about 15 minutes into my wait it was changed to 25 minutes. I was there for almost an hour before asking them to check on m y order only to be given a condescending response. I am a big fan of their bread, salads, and sandwiches, but they have messed up my order every single time without fail not to mention super slow service. Came here last week with friend. Truly yummy eggplant sandwich. It's like a BLT but with thin bacon seasoned slices of eggplant. Delicious! Came today and ordered the same sandwich but the eggplant was cooked too hard so it was difficult to chew.
