My good friends graduation dinner was here today and I would rate this 3.8/5 good food yet small portions and not extraordinary for the price ( entrees are about 20+) I ordered the salmon which was tender and accompanied by eggplant, salmon roe & a lemon butter sauce. The flavors were good. The cauliflower soup is creamy , vegan and tastes heavenly it's great but more of a starter because of its small size. The fish tacos were a mouthful of that great tortilla and guacamole with sauce flavor but a little pricey at 15$ and quite unremarked me for the price . For dessert we ordered the orange dessert , it was an orange cake with vanilla ice cream , very small portions not shareable and disappointingly bland $11. The risotto is rather tasty but I'm have very similar risotto elsewhere with truffle oil and Parmesan very common. I truly believe this is the best--if not one of the best--restaurants in AA. Firstly, I love that it has a simple and almost inconspicuous exterior. Places like these allow the food and service to speak for it. After eating dinner here on two consecutive nights, I raved about it to AA locals and they all said the same thing: "I've walked by it a hundred times and never thought to look in." I guess they do pretty well with word-of-mouth advertising. Secondly, the service is outstanding. As soon as you walk in, it's like they were expecting you all along (even without reservations...but I recommend making them since they get a swell of patrons for dinner from the theater crowd). You're brought in as though you're part of the family and suddenly you're their number one priority. They want to make sure you're happy and satisfied. I don't always expect this type of service from a nice restaurant so when it's given, I'm always floored. The food is really, really good here. I had the crispy skin salmon, perch, mussels, beet salad, asparagus soup and tuna poke. The salmon was excellent! The mussels are a must-get--they are cooked in a spicy tomato based broth that is infused with basil and other spices that really bring out the flavor of the mussels. They give you complementary refills of grilled bread for dipping! The asparagus soup was a very nice starter...creamy yet light and full of asparagus flavor. The beet salad was ok...nothing really spectacular. The tuna poke was really a nice surprise which I would have again. My only real complaint was with the perch dish (hence why I didn't give them 5 stars). It was just too salty. Perch is not exactly the easiest to cook, I think. It's puny and really doesn't have a flavor of its own. I get the need to salt it but mine was over salted and made it hard to enjoy. It came with a lemon sauce that didn't really do much for it. The dish was pretty boring overall...with fingerling potatoes, chopped asparagus and mushrooms sautéed and thrown on the plate. My recommendation would be to reinvent a perch dish that would include ingredients that accentuate and elevate the perch while infusing it with some interesting spices (not just salt). Lastly, the desserts were ok. They sound great on paper but after trying the chocolate boudin squares, coffee creme brûlée and lemon meringue (prepared like a semifreddo), I wasn't all that excited to try their desserts again. Overall, the concept of Vietnamese inspired French food or vice versus didn't really come through in the dishes. It was more French/New American to me. I would have appreciated more Vietnamese dishes on the menu but then again they could just go all French/New American and that wouldn't be a bad thing! My partner and I have been to Taste Kitchen on at least 3 other occasions and have always been so happy with the experience, but last evening unfortunately fell short. The restaurant was very busy and possibly they were short staffed, so I am definitely very understanding about our server being extremely rushed and not very attentive, but the food was disappointing last night. We started with the duck foie gras. It appeared cooked appropriately, and was presented in a custard type sauce...but was underwhelming in taste, and actually really difficult to eat due to the small serving dish with a runny custard and a generous portion of the protein. Fork? Spoon? Knife to cut in bite size pieces? Strange, but if there had been more taste to the mixture it would have helped, and to have maybe served it with some toast points would have been appreciated. I would not order this small plate again. I then had the hanger steak and my partner had the tuna nicoise. The tuna had a delicious taste and was cooked perfectly, but the entire dish was served cold and he was disappointed because it was such a cold night. It would be great as a summer dish, but not winter. I have had hanger steak at this establishment before and have loved it, but not this dish. The meat was cooked well, but the dish was served with both wilted and fresh lettuces, jalepenos, a very sour vinaigrette and 4 slices of a tasteless tomato. I am understanding to the perils of tomatoes in Michigan in the winter, but I was seriously hungry and wanted to eat them so I had to ask for some salt and pepper. I realize nicer restaurants look down on this, but simple remedy, flavor the food you are serving. I would not order this dish again. The jalepenos were given generously, but eating them disguised the taste of the remainder of the dish. No starches on either dish, or bread offered with the meal. I get it, you don't want to serve bread, but we left unsatisfied and joked that we needed to find a pizza by the slice place for home. We didn't, and this am I woke up hungry, hence this review! Also, we each ordered a drink and both were delicious but I'm a water person, and I drank mine and my partner's because no one came back to refill our glasses for the 2 hours we were there. All I can say is, wow! Found another place that my heart is in love with! The atmosphere is small, modern, with a very nice and quaint feeling. My advice is to make sure you have a reservation, because of the size of the place. We walked in without one, but only had an hour wait (we chose to sit at the bar). Which, I thought sitting at the bar was actually really nice if you don't mind talking to the other people around you. You are all there for amazing food, right? Well, not only was the food IMPECCABLE, but the drinks were top notch! I seriously cannot wait to go back here! We came here last night for dinner last night. I picked after pre-reading the menu. Everything sounded fantastic! When we arrived to this very tightly packed restaurant (good for them, maybe they need more space- maybe they need less tables) we were seated within 5-10 minutes. There was barely standing room. We squeezed our way to our table and I was thanking the heavens that I wasn't ten pounds heavier or my posterior would have surely been in other patron's flans. Colds- We ordered the Tuna Poke and Scallop Civichè. The Scallops were not good or bad. The truffle oil and scallops perfect. The onions and grapefruit and onions and grapefruit in my opinion overpowered how sweet and delicate the scallops were. Micro-greens were on top. I believe that micro-greens have become the new parsley. Next up was the Tuna Pokè I say it was not great. I only say that because the fried wonton on the bottom was so hard it was inedible so I ate around that. Maybe it was a bad night for wontons. I ate around that and what was on top was decent, but it didn't blow my socks off. I have had more exciting tuna and avocado at the Cheesecake Factory. Hot- Shrimp Risotto. Again I was disappointed. The rice over cooked and over seasoned and the shrimp not seasoned at all. Mains- I decided at that point to sit mains out. I was done trying, but I was still enjoying the atmosphere and my company. The service was attentive and good. I did try some of the Crispy Salmon that was ordered at my table. That was the highlight of the night. The parsnip purée was sweet, but had a lovely ring of salty butter around it, the spinach on top was nice with the mid-rare salmon with burrs-rouge on top was a nice touch. Dessert- Swiss cake roll. We ordered this to go. When we got home it was soggy so I won't base my ratting on this. It was still tasty and I ate it all. I may not be a total Epicurean, but I have been to a lot of fine dining restaurants across the country and this one for me just didn't live up to the hype or even the other ratings that I saw here on yelp. Came here on a Saturday 7pm and all the tables inside were reserved, however outside seating was available. The server was super nice and kind. I ordered the salmon sashimi bc I wasn't too hungry and the mains were a little more expensive. Sashimi seemed pretty fresh but it was coated w a lot of soy sauce. Came here for dinner while in town and was super impressed. Clearly a popular spot as it filled up quickly, and everything was well thought out, from instagrammable cocktails to impeccably decorated dishes. We grabbed the cheese plate to share, which was good but nothing too special, as well as the octopus and mussels. These were delicious - the octopus was very lightly fried and just right, with great flavor, and the mussels were in a rich tomato-based sauce that was incredible. Plenty of grilled bread to mop up the sauce - so good. Instead of an entree I opted for two of the small plates - the beet salad and shrimp risotto. Both were amazing, honestly. The shrimp risotto was packed with shrimp, different mushrooms, and cheese crisps - super rich, and the sugary beets paired well with the walnuts/goat cheese. Ended the meal with the chocolate bodino squares, which were almost fudge-like in consistency - so good, with delicious raspberry coulis and brandy whipped cream. I was there twice , once to grab some small dish on the bar we loved it so much that we went again for our anniversary dinner . We did reservation few days a go mentioning that it was for our anniversary. While on arrival we were offered the smaller table . Actually i noticed that they don't have a lot of space inside and they do have a lot of smaller tables . While going to the restroom I had to squeeze my self between each table gap so that I don't shake the tables. And I am not a big fat person who need a lot of space too move . From the food point of view it was excellent. I ordered oysters for appetizers and the scallop risotto for main dish . My husband ordered Vietnamese pork dish served with egg and rice . It was cooked to perfection. I think I had the best raw oysters there. The food was fresh and very delicate in taste. Portion size was good too . The texture of each dish will invite you in to it. It was an amazing experience along with some great red wine "Comte Armand Auxey-Duresses Permier Cru | Cote de Braune, France 2014". We ordered cream brûlée for dessert and it was good too . I do not consider this place as pricey as it sounds . Specially the kind of service you get . But my only issue which struck me quite a bit is they did not offer anything complimentary knowing that this was an anniversary dinner . Other than this restaurant every restaurant I visited either on my birthday or on my anniversary I got a complimentary dessert. Specially in Ann Arbor most of the places offer so much on your birthday , so it was weird and made a mark on my head . But again over all they were extremely good. While going to Ann Arbor downtown you always have to worry about parking it is not much difficult for this restaurant because Maynard public parking structure is right across the street. For appetizer, had the salmon sashimi and seafood boulobaise. Absolute perfection. The salmon sashimi had meaty pieces of salmon in a wonderful ponzu sauce, topped with pickled onions. Amazing. The boulobaise was this incredible clear, tomato-based broth soup - well seasoned and spicy, with salmon, mussels and shrimp. Served with incredible grilled buttered toast to sop up the broth. You'll need an extra serving (included) just to soak it all up!! Well worth it!! Sooo good. For entree, I had the salmon - beautiful fillet of fresh salmon with crispy skin. Oh to die for! My friends also recommended the shaking beef salad (I didn't taste but I'm sure it's incredible) and the roast cauliflower dish as a vegan option. Everyone was so happy!! I recommend for dessert the semifredo lemon meringue and the coffee creme brûlée. Absolute winners! I can't wait to return to Taste Kitchen. Came with a large group, we split some appetizers and then each one ordered their food. I tried the mussels (really good and quite a large portion) and the the ceviche (ok, but too much truffle). For my meal I had the bouillabaisse and that was quite disappointing. The broth had no depth of flavor whatsoever and was almost overpowered by tomatoes and squash (which is quite bland so should not really overpower anything that tastes of anything). The seafood was cooked fine (no under or overlooking), but in general was quite flavorless and the fish they had in the soup was salmon which is a waste in a soup. I'm pretty sure anyone with the same ingredients could have done better in flavor profile. Lamb looked great though, so maybe I should have gotten that one. read more

We visited the Taste kitchen on Saturday night, there were a lot empty seats but the waiter told us they've been reserved so we ended up setting at the bar. I was expecting some Asian fusion but there was nothing I really interested, so we picked three appetizers. I am not sure if it's because we only picked appetizers, but the service is none existing. The waitress is pretty much throw food on our table. The presentation was awful and the food is edible but not impressive. Delicious, fresh and varied. They have different entrees every time you come in, depending on what is fresh and what the chefs dream up. Portions are small, so you could get both an appetizer and an entree. No takeout boxes for us! Servers are very available and helpful but not intrusive. Salmon was perfectly cooked and juicy, unlike many places that overcook it. Duck was medium rare with a delicious sauce. The tiny chocolate squares with whipped cream and fresh mint leaves made a good dessert to share. It is a good idea to work out and skip lunch before you go. read more

Simply amazing from start to finish. It was Mom's birthday and she's simple so she normally resorts to Red Lobster, Olive Garden or one of those places for those dinners, but I wanted to elevate her palette so I brought here here! The ambiance was calm, mature and the atmosphere looked so modern, yet elegant. Our waitress was amazing (I wish I remembered her name), but she was attentive, quick and made great suggestions. We started with their cheese plate and tuna poke. The cheese plate was cool, but there was just too much crumbly bleu on it. On the plate were Anabasque Sheep's Milk, Teleggio and Hidden Springs Bohemian 16. Seems like really fancy names for American, cheddar and bleu to be honest. You also get sweet pickles, walnuts and a raspberry purée of some sort to cut the sharpness of all the cheese. The bread that came with was fabulous though. Soft, warm and flavorful. For dinner Mom got the seared halibut which came with leeks, mushrooms and other vegetables. It was cooked well and seasoned even better. Dad had the lamb chops with sweet potatoes, asparagus, red onions, snap peas and a random fried egg. Mom's friend has the Shaking Beef which is consistent if Beef tips, greens, tomatoes, jalepeño, red onion and a lime sauce. I had the Seafood Laska which is a coconut curry based soup with lobster, shrimp, salmon and mussels. I got to taste a little of everyone's food and if I could trade dishes with anyone it would've been with Dad. Those lamb chops though! Everything was delicious though. I'd absolutely come back here again. By the way, as I type this review, the Seafood Laska and Seared Halibut aren't even on the menu anymore. Excellent service! The food was good but a little too expensive for what it is, I guess we pay for well trained servers. The ambience was very nice for a romantic dinner. The risotto primavera was excellent, the ribeye I heard from our company's comment that it was really good. The server accommodated my little 8 years old and brought food for her that wasn't in the menu, she loved it all. Woah, $25 pho! I'm a pho fanatic, and when I seen that taste kitchen finally brought back pho I knew I had to try it. First, let me get this straight, unless you are using waygu beef, there is no reason your pho should be $25. That being said, I knew I was willing to pay it, just because this was a new place, and anywhere that has the audacity to charge $25 for veggie pho, it better be nothing short of spectacular. So how was it? Well, certainly not the best pho I've had, which I probably paid 6.50 for, it was pretty prettty pretty good. The ingredients were all very fresh, the broth did have some dynamics going on, but wasn't the boldest I've tried. Overall, I left feeling pho-ull, but not quite satisfied. I got pretty tired of the taste about half-way through, and that doesn't always happen. I wouldn't put this as the best pho in Ann Arbor/Ypsi by any means, but definitely better than Tomuken and One Bowl. read more

Mellow musak and lightning make this a relaxing place to enjoy the evening with friends. From the bar I had a Manhattan. Two actually and they we done quite nicely. For starters I had the shrimp bisque. This was creamy and full-on shrimp flavor. Maybe tad bit salty - if I had to critique it. Maybe. The mains I chose was the Shaking Beef. A contemporary take on this classic Vietnamese dish. Don't let the jalapeños or bib letter fool you. It was neither hot nor a salad. Quite enjoyable. The acidic dipping sauce brightened the flavors. And the portions at this restaurant were maybe the worst I've ever seen for the price. $18 for 3 ounces of split pea soup? $22 for 4 slices of tuna? That is borderline offensive. The risotto was a steal at $24, but the smallest pasta dish I can ever remember receiving. I realized that they either raised the prices for graduation weekend, or that their menu on their normal website does not accurately reflect the prices when you go to the restaurant and click the QR code. Another gangbusters amazing balls-to-walls cray cray meal. We took a small plates approach this time - starting with the cheese plate (hello, French creme fraiche swapped in for taleggio!!!), Basil-y and al dente risotto (al dente ensuring a satisfying mouthfeel), and then we split the halibut main course - delicious, flakey fish over a potato patty, broccolini in a curried sauce. We finished off two bottles of the Barbera D'Asti red wine because it had a smooth but full body, bright start and mellow finish, and delightfully drinkable quality throughout the whole meal. We finished up with the chocolate fudge/mousse/pot de creme squares, one of our favorites, and then, after some time and oncoming inebriation, the coffee creme brûlée (how many times can a single review use the word "creme"?) The service continues to be top notch, this time including the unnecessary yet appreciated decanter shaped like a swan (or a dragon, or a stomach, or a spleen, as we discussed with the wait staff and fellow customers). I think the cocktails are the best part of the menu, very fresh and delicious, I thought it was pretty interesting that they have a house made crème de menthe, I've never seen that before and it was pretty good. The menu is always changing but we started with the scallop ceviche which was excellent, but I am a bit of a push over for scallops. The octopus was good, not the best I have ever had but come on we are in Ann Arbor not a coastal city so it gets the job done. The black bass was perfect and the lemon meringue was not too tart like a lot of places make it. Service was fair, not terrible not overly amazing and the place is pretty small so make sure to make at reservation. Its a little on the pricy side but I think its fair for the quality you get. First, you walk in and see a very clean and chic environment and the host takes you to your seat in such a way that shows that they care about the eating experience. The care taken with the table and the menu placement and the silverware indicates the restaurant's belief that eating is a special event, and it primes you, the guest, for slowing down and settling into a great experience. The menu is beautifully presented and the options are plentiful enough to feel freedom of choice but not so extensive that you get lost in the woods. I'm no wino but the wine list looks like it satisfies most - and I had a very tasty glass of something called Serol from France that was tangy and surprising. We started with a safe but satiating cheese plate with two hard aged cheeses and a blue, toasted baguette, candied walnuts, and what we decided was fig preserves. The cocktail list is short but so much fun to read, showing a real commitment to creative and exceptional mixology. Being bar regulars here, I also know that the house loves to make special cocktails to suit your fancy, whatever your whim may be today. Perusing the menu, I did slightly react about how few options there were for a vegetarian like myself, but our server quickly abated those concerns with a thorough explanation of multiple items that could be made in a vegetarian preparation, even offering an item off menu that could satisfy. When all was said and done, I went ahead with confidence to order the only main item that was fully vegetarian as listed on menu - a potato cannelloni with mushrooms, spinach, and curry sauce. My husband got the scallops and he opted to swap out a sauce with bacon for the same curry. The entrees were artfully presented, and in such a way, like permaculture architecture, the layers, gently stacked, concealed the plenty within. Eating a meal like this is an excavation experience, and a welcome one, since each bite is delicious, making ingredients you thought you knew well pop with flavor you didn't know was possible. Our evening sprawled to a couple more cocktails and a shared piece of a Korean Saeng cake (which was a touch drier than our tastes prefer but, given the intentionality of everything we experienced at Taste, we chock up to the style of this cake otherwise foreign to us). We looked at each other at some point, realizing we'd been there for nearly four hours! My husband and I went for Valentine's day. We decided to have the wine selections with each course and the experience was amazing. The server is not only cleared our plates for us after every course, they reset our silverware so we would not have to worry about holding onto a dirty fork. The only criticism that I have of the experience was that the scallop dish that I got for one of the courses was very salty. I could only get through a third of the course. Overpriced and ostentatious. We were there last weekend. We were placed so close to the next tables that we shared their conversations. My sister ordered hanger beef entree that looked like a chopped salad with visibly under ripe tomatoes. My scallops were good. Three were visible on the plate. Came in for a dinner date and had a nice time. Server was knowledgeable, friendly, seemingly genuine if a little inattentive. Had to ask about our scallops but they came shortly after. Scallops were seasoned well but slightly underdone. Octo almost awesome as it was chewier than it shouldve been but it was really good. Taste has a lot going for it, the host stand is not one of them. I was ignored by 2-3 people before a man on his laptop begrudgingly (even standing with a groan) greeted me and guided me by pointing to my table. Not bad but certainly not great. read more

I think it's overrated. Their fish is ok, but too salty for me. I think it's not worth the price. I've been many times, but I've never gotten their non-fish meat dishes. Maybe they are better. read more

Wonderful food and drinks. Yelp helped my wife and I find this delightful surprise. You will love it as we did. Can't wait to return. Fish tacos and shrimp risotto got us started. What incredible flavors, textures, and colors. Wow... We could only imagine what was coming for our main courses. I enjoyed a halibut to die for atop a plate-wiping (ok licking) corn purée. Wife had the chicken couscous that was such a refreshing dish The sweet of the chicken against a cool arugula salad side-kick was a flavorful juxtaposition bite after bite....healthy and mmmmmm too! Note: You never know how good the service is you have a problem...My generously thick halibut was a bit underdone...an understandable human error. My fish was back in four sips of my excellent beer recommendation, La Fin Du Monde, with a smile and sincere thanks for allowing them to make things right. Another great night here at Taste! Over the past few times we've dined here, it's gotten better and better each time. The menu is constantly changing which is one of the things we love about this place. It never gets boring. The quality of the ingredients is something you can't beat. Service was superb and they exceeded our expectations as always. We love coming back! read more
