The service was good and mostly attentive, and I was glad we were able to enjoy being outside even though the kids running around behind me and bumping my chair all night did drive me crazy after a while. As for what I had for dinner... Pesto Grilled Cheese $13.00 Gruyere, smoked Gouda, and mozzarella, with roasted pepper pesto on grilled sourdough. Served with house potato chips. (V) I added chicken, and I got the sweet potato fries. The sandwich was ok. I didn't love the pesto and my chicken was dry, but the cheese was good. My fries had a good flavor and dipping sauce, but I would have liked to have had them cooked crispier. read more

Ok. We've given Sam Hill 5 visits and we are done. From the first disaster at brunch to last night's ridiculousness, we are done with Sam Hill. I'm sure others like it though I'm not sure why or how. Monday night. Two adults and one kid. Service was very sweet. Husband ordered an Old Fashioned with Markers Mark instead of their well. What he got was a super sweet cocktail. Almost too sweet to drink. He said it was fine. He didn't want to fuss. Let's just move on to the food. We both were feeling like a patty melt. I asked to add mushrooms and leave off the special sauce (thousand island type stuff). What we got was a plate with soggy sourdough stuffed with salty saucy pot roast covered in cheese and onions. That is not a patty melt. I looked up the description on the menu online and it doesn't say pot roast but braised beef. I get it after seeing what was on the plate and wouldn't have ordered it if there was a picture or if it said it was saucy POT ROAST. The side salad I ordered for a $4 up charge was great. Beautiful and fresh. Even their ranch is really good. I tried to eat the sandwich but it was too salty and disappointing. I wanted a patty melt. Pot roast isn't a frickin patty. My husband powered through his. He was too hungry. The waitress offered to talk to the manager and came back to offer one of their smash burgers. I asked if it can be a patty melt on grilled bread instead of a bun. She was clueless. I ordered a burger and said just put it on the bread. It came out after my husband and little was well finished with their food. Her talking to the manager took way too long. The burger wasn't a smash burger either, it was two tiny over cooked patties. Smash burgers are thin and with crispy edges. This was not. The caramelized onion fondue cheese sauce was the highlight but at this point I was just eating to fill my belly and get out of there. Husband and little ordered the strawberry shortcake dessert just so they weren't sitting there waiting for me to finish. Idk what that rock hard shortcake was made out of but it took muscle to get thru it. It wasn't dry just very dense and tasteless. There was too much biscuit to macerated strawberries. It needed to be dunked in the syrup to get some flavor. It's was stout enough to handle it. When the bill was brought out, I had to ask for an iced tea refill. No refills were offered or given the whole visit. Total was ~$73 before tip. This is it for us. They have a nice private dining room that I would have loved to consider for our company holiday party but only if the food was better. They are consistently poor in either the execution or description of their menu items. read more

Had a nice first time weekend lunch here and look forward to coming back again to enjoy the yard (outdoor area) and music! Looks like there are yard games and it's family and dog friendly. Sat inside which was large and spacious. Service was friendly and attentive. Got a chicken caesar wrap, which I enjoyed. The house made chips were really good - thick and crunchy. Wrap and chips were made even better with a touch of hot sauce on the side. Also shared the mini pasties. Haven't seen this on menus, and these were good! This was a place my Ann Arbor family had never heard of, I found them on Yelp, and my family is obsessed. I have a long list of dietary needs for the family, and Sam Hill handles them all. The deep fried vegan Brussels sprouts are prepared so lightly that we had to order more. The vibe was upscale casual, but we didn't see the music scene. We're going to try it out soon! read more

I was not expecting the outdoor area to be so expansive with room to play games along with outdoor dining. It's the perfect place for groups and families. The drinks are good and the service from the bartenders at the outdoor area was excellent. I recommend getting the steak street tacos from the menu. Now the bad. The chicken caesar salad should have been better quality for the price. Small pieces of chicken and the dressing wasn't great. I didn't see a lot of parmesan cheese. You're paying $20 for a container of lettuce and some chicken with croutons. I didn't finish it. Also, compostable utensils cost $.50. I'm tired of money-making schemes veiled as businesses being environmentally friendly. If you want to save the environment, use reusable utensils, and don't charge your customers for a fork and spoon. read more

Been here twice for brunch and have to say the food is pretty mid (except for their home fries, which slap) and priced high considering that and the location. Service also just okay on two occasions. But there's a lot of seating and they seem to have a cool yard and event space. I've ordered: --- Crepe -- it is very large, but nothing to write home about. There is definitely a combo of fresh, frozen, and maybe strawberry jam in there. I didn't detect any other fruit. The marscapone part of the filling was good. Side of scrambled eggs arrived cold. --- Farmer's omelette, home fries, and side of fruit. Servicable farmer's omelette, exactly what you'd expect and nothing more. Fruit cup was fine, I don't think all of it was fresh. Home fries are 10/10 would home fry again. I'll be returning for brunch with friends some more and to try the breakfast burrito which looked good. Gave this place a second try and glad I did! Came in for lunch with a friend and started with a refreshing glass of white wine. I had the Cobb salad and it was so yummy. This place is a hidden gem, especially in the summer. My only complaint is that they got rid of the garlic dip for the veggie pita plate, which was my absolute favorite. Despite that, I still have to give it a good rating because of the thought and effort they put into the atmosphere. During the summer, there are so many activities, like cornhole, food and drink trucks, games, and more. It's a really cute and fun place to visit, especially for taking people visiting Ann Arbor in the summer. While they got rid of the dip I loved, they added the grilled cheese with pesto, which is great. I've also always had great service here and have never encountered a slow or rude server! We were excited to try this new restaurant located on the west side of Ann Arbor. Although we were quoted a 45 minute wait time for a table, a table became available after 15 minutes. We requested a booth and were accommodated. The seats look more comfortable than the other seats. The booths were in the bar but we did not mind. The decor is casual with repurposed stadium seats near the entrance. There are also rocking chairs in front of the restaurant, if folks prefer to sit outside. We ordered the mini pasties, crab cakes, and fries for an appetizer. We wanted to try the boudin balls but they were out. The mini pasties were amazing! The outer pastry was the perfect texture and the filling was seasoned well. It was a cross between a Jamaican beef patty and an empanada. The fries were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They were also excellent. The crab cakes were okay. Very similar to others I have had. My husband ordered shrimp and grits and found the grits a little lumpy. The seasoning was a bit mild compared to typical shrimp and grits dishes at other places. My daughter ordered a Caesar salad with chicken and my son ate the steak frites which he rated highly. The biscuits were also delicious. They were served with honey and butter. I will definitely order those again. My husband ordered the bourbon cake. It was served with ice cream so we expected the cake to be warm but they serve it cold. I am curious how it would taste warmed up. This is opening weekend, so I'm sure they are still working out the kinks. Nevertheless, I am so excited to have a new restaurant in the neighborhood. read more

The best part may be their fries because you could tell they were real potatoes but they were awfully sweet and very greasy. Queso/chorizo dip was nothing different than what you might make for a football Sunday, it was actually kind of close Chili's one and the chips were SO salty. My juicy Lucy was mediocre. Decided to try this restaurant last night for the first time and we were disappointed. There was no greeting from the hostess, she just looked at us with a blank stare. Our server however was nice and attentive. I ordered the fish tacos. It was three 4" corn tortillas with a piece of fish the size of my pinky with a little bit of slaw and red onion. Fish and chips were basic and not much for the price. The sweet potatoes were inconsistent in the cook. The desserts were underwhelming in flavor. We were very disappointed in our experience. We had the pasties- 5/5. The grilled ravioli 3/5- they were hard on the outside seemed frozen? The short rib- 4/5 the taste was excellent. The total size was lacking- smaller than every dish we ordered. Less than 3 ounces for $28. The cauliflower enchiladas 4/5 for $18 was good. The Hot Brown $20 3.5/5. Was an interesting dish. Pesto Chicken -$16 4.5/5. Was good. We had the cheesecake for dessert which was good. 5/5. We were seated relatively quickly for not having a reservation. Our server was very friendly. But certain steps of service were lacking. For example we still had entree dishes when we were finishing dessert along with a sauce dish from the ravioli. So the table was not bussed/pre bussed or reset. Never refilled water glasses. Had to ask more than once for a beverage refill. Recommend checking it out but not sure how this place will do. Love sitting at the bar for happy hour w bartender, Nicole! The beer garden and porch are also great places to enjoy a salad, burger, chicken skewers, or codfish tacos. My only complaint is the live music has been off. They were choking out "Stayin Live" when we left. Seriously, there are sooooo many wonderful musicians in the area, there is only room for improvement.
