We visit this restaurant about once per month and find that the food is good but not great and that the service is also good but not great. Overall a good pick for a quick meal with friends. Yesterday we visited on a beautiful Friday evening and enjoyed a pre dinner drink in their much hyped outdoor area where we witnessed dozens of folks enjoying a very nice evening of Al Fresco dining, drinking and general merriment. This outdoor area is definitely a special and unique feature of Sam Hill and I highly recommend it. The food menu is very abbreviated compared to the regular "inside" menu but covers the "bar food basics." We then moved indoors for our meal at around 5:30 and at that time the place was not crowded and quiet enough for a normal conversation. However, by 6PM the place had filled up and conversation became impossible. This was our first visit during a peak time and at that point we decided that it would be our last. If you must go during peak hours, try and get outdoor seating on their deck (vs. the aforementioned outdoor area so you can enjoy the full menu) or resign yourself to a conversation-less meal. read more

I reserved a table for 10 after my daughter's U OF M Graduation. The table was all ready for us. The waiter was excellent in every way. Every one of us thoroughly enjoyed the food (and these are picky people!) Pot roast, fish & chips, smash burgers-and the appetizers and vegetarian dishes were all delicious! Really a 3.5 for Sam Hill. Probably a good place to plan a summer event as there is a lot of outdoor space and you can bring your favorite canine!! Dining room is as expected. A couple TVS and some sports stuff on the wall. It is very loud in that noise carries so when you get a crying baby it could really clear the place. We did on our second visit. Food is classic midwestern type. My husband liked the fries. I had fish tacos on both visits. First time they were great. Second time much smaller. Like half the fish and smothered with too much of a spicy mayonnaise in hopes I would not notice? Tasty though. Nice copper top bar with 4 beers on draft. The beer is served in a chilled pint which I appreciate. I would never order a premixed cocktail of which they have a few. I like that they have a happy hour every day, but in reality it's not very happy. Only one of the drafts is eligible, not surprisingly it's the one brewed for them , and it's all of one dollar off lol. Premixed cocktails on happy hour menu also. There are some food selections also but they are really just half portion of menu things at half price. For example we ordered hot brown fries half portion for $6. The full portion on menu is $12, so is that really a deal?! Same thing for the tomato pies-happy hour is 2 pies at exactly half the price of the 4 pies any other time. We might return to check out the outside space when there is a good live band, but for dinner I'm not sold. read more

I absolutely love their appetizers. I have now been here a few times and never gone beyond that part of the menu. The service was excellent. Even though it was completely full, the service was quick. My husband had a question about his drink and it was replaced immediately at no extra charge. It's a nice place to have a drink and a good meal. First time here. We were thoroughly impressed. Decent craft beer selection, garlic dip appetizer was great. we both had salads ( quinoa salad and Cobb salad) and added the grilled chicken. A group of us decided to try Sam Hill tonite for dinner. There was a short wait when we arrived 15 minutes for a table so not too bad. Server at our table was attentive, prompt, and very friendly. Each of us ordered something different. The short ribs with the goat cheese grits were ok, nothing to write home about. My wife ordered the Chicken Tendies, which were absolutely tasteless and dry. She also had the Tomato Bisque which also lacked flavor and the normal creamy consistency of a good bisque. The pomodoro/marinara sauce they served with the Chicken Tendies seemed like an odd combination, but there were no other options offered. Our friends ordered the brisket sliders with Carolina bbq sauce and slaw on brioche buns. He said they were good and the fries were fresh cut potatoes and tasty. The other dish was the 50/50 Chorizo/Beef burger which was also pretty good. Overall we would rate the food as average. The menu is limited with some interesting items. The ambiance at least during the time we were there was very loud. There was a significant investment to transform this from the previous establishment which was The Standard. Their was excitement with anticipation of another option on the West side of A2 opening, but we left less than impressed. We will give it another try. Maybe they will experiment and expand their menu with better options and improve the quality of ingredients on some of their items as they get to know their clientele. read more

First time going this past weekend. I have celiac disease and they had a really good GF selection including appetizers and dessert. We welcome a new restaurant in the Ann Arbor area and were excited to try this place out. First of all the staff is great, all very welcoming and friendly and for only a week in, very efficient and seemingly well-trained. The food was pretty good although not very so varied and for my taste too heavy on the fried and carbs, there are chips served with the handhelds or you can upgrade to fries, I would prefer some sort of green option in there. Speaking of green, a few salads but not a lot of healthy choices. They have a nice cocktail menu and the one we tried was tasty and not skimpy on booze, the draft beer choices are limited, only one IPA and that is the ever common Two Hearted--ho-hum. I will be back but don't see with current menu it becoming a favorite. read more

This place has got potential. The plans for the outdoor space look very promising. The decor is good and the servers are the high point of the restaurant so far. The have Sam Helles beer brewed especially for them by Wolverine State and it is very good. I think they are still working on the food as some things like the mini pasties are great but we ordered the biscuits and out came something more like dinner rolls. Well this is a very nice venue and once they work a few of the kinks out it should be a pretty amazing place. Visited yesterday. We brought our concerns to the manager who is eager to improve the dining experience. Drink glasses are rather petite, especially for a Sunday Bloody Mary. I would have preferred to be able to choose from something a regular menu, not just a brunch menu. My husbands breakfast burrito was just lukewarm, the breakfast potatoes were rock hard and seemed to have been prepared earlier and reheated. Like wise with the overdone over fried French fries. There were other missteps including over easy eggs that were still clear liquid. The vast majority of the meal problems were really kitchen prep related. Food came out surprisingly fast- wouldn't have minded waiting until Our food was correctly prepared. The server was a sweet girl who was attentive but only cleared one finished plate away. She never picked up the other completed plates (maybe she is used to working with a bus boy who does that for her). 20% tip added automatically to a party of six. The manager did discount the bill which was very nice. Correct the food prep; let patrons order from the regular lunch menu on Sundays too/not just brunch. You will get there. read more

We went in and sat at the bar on a Thursday night. The bartender was very friendly and efficient. We ordered the mini pasties and the tomato pies which were both very good. The only thing we didn't care for was the gravy for the pasties, we just used ketchup instead though Great service and atmosphere. We will go back again for sure. read more

Sam Hill is such a place! We had dinner and drinks, food was excellent and service was FAST! Even when busy! After dinner we hung out in the yard area where we enjoyed music and lots of games. Our toddlers had a blast while we got to continue hanging out and enjoying conversation. 10/10 recommend! read more

Quite honestly the only positive aspect about my experience was the staff. The hosts were very pleasant and waiter was pleasant and attentive. I ordered the smash burger and upgraded my side of chips to sweet potato fries. The smash burger was decent enough that I ate it but would not come back for it or recommend it. The sweet potato fries were partly cold and tasted like they had been sitting out then microwaved. I love sweet potato fries and am not picky nor do I usually review places but the fries were the worst I've had. I'm disappointed that I had to pay extra to get them. Also, the vibe/decor inside was strange. It was like if Cracker Barrel tried to make their place more "hip" and add in cocktails. For example, there were country style benches facing each other with a coffee table and menu for cocktails to be used for groups who want to hang out and have some drinks. I'm just not sure I would choose to go out for cocktails just to sit on country style benches. It just felt "off". I was hoping to go back at some point with friends to try out the outside yard games with friends but if it's up to me, I would not recommend nor wish to return to eat. Of note, I live super close and have a low threshold for hoping there would be a close new place to hang out at to grab something quick but honestly I think we'll be going somewhere else instead. If I want good pub food or a menu with a lot of types of foods that is all great quality, I'll head to the Dexter Pub. read more

The fresh beets are roasted in house. They are in wedges big enough for those that don't prefer beets to pick them out. lol But for those that love beets it's a perfect salad to share! The Samash Burger super yummy and DO NOT pass on the short rib!!! OMG ... super duper yummy!!! Ohhh... save room for the Bourbon Cake ... Dddddeelious!!!! A long list of Apps, and we ordered five of them. All of them were great - crabcakes, broiled oysters, fried dirty rice with sausage, tomato pies, toasted ravioli. The food was considerably more creative and interesting than I anticipated. Drinks were a strong pour if a bit on the pricey side for the size of the glasses. The dessert was bourbon cream cake. Exceptional as well. Service was very very good - attentive, engaging. We ate on the outside patio. The patio itself is very nice and the rest of the outside is a work in progress. We tried Sam Hill for the first time and we were quite pleased. The hostess and wait staff were very pleasant! The appetizer selection was pretty good, and we decided to try the pasties for our appetizer. I have to be honest, I am pretty picky with my pasties and gravy. There were some ingredients in the pasty that was different from up north pasties, and the crust was different as well. I am more of a fan of beef gravy versus turkey or chicken. The good thing was there were several other appetizer choices, so I will have to try one of the others when we go back. For our main meals we had fish tacos, samash burgers and a black bean burger. Each entree was really good! We had the chips and their house-cut fries with our sandwiches and both were tasty. The fish tacos was served with rice and beans. Also very tasty! We really enjoyed our experience, and I am looking forward to heading back and trying their biscuits and gravy for brunch! The atmosphere was nice...good music and big enough that we didn't feel too crowded with the other patrons. This restaurant was definitely worth the visit! read more

Excellent menu, service and CLEAN! The waitstaff were friendly and attentive. We had their burgers and salad. The flavor notes are fantastic and very well balanced. A slight but flavorful heat in my burger. The grilled Brussel sprouts were perfectly done. The best I have ever had. My niece had one of the dessert items. A type of brownie like lava cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. Good? Nope! Flat out sinful. I do not drink alcohol, so I have no comment on their alcoholic beverages. For the freshness and their attention to detail on what you are served, the price point is very fair and reasonable. We were there at 2-ish on a Tuesday, so the wait was ever so slight.
