This wonderful eatery was recommended to us by our hotel front desk clerk while visiting Boone over the Halloween weekend. It was awesome as we cannot get good Chinese food where we live. Service, SUCKED. Walked in and not even a greet. I was one of two in line. One pink haired employee helped guests, then walked away. Then, it's my turn. I walk up, and it's like a staring contest. I have been in the food industry, so I know I have to wait sometimes. But there were at least 3 people just standing looking around, but avoiding eye contact with me. I get if they don't know how to do the "to-go" station, but at least say, "give us one second, please." But, no. The two employees that were on the register finished, and then walked away, but only about 3 feet, to do something else entirely. By this point, the line is about 5-7 people long. Super weird. Finally after about 10 minutes of standing, I had one employees attention. By no means was I going to yell at them or pull them away in the middle of a task they were doing, but I think they just got annoyed I was standing there? It's like they just hated their lives. Granted, most looked like college students, so I get it. But Jesus Christ. Got my food. Told the employee pretty nicely "yea, I've just been waiting for a little bit, it's okay though" to be a little snooty, but not enough to classify me as a Karen. We were told 25 minutes so I'll give you 35 but not 65. I know they are really busy but it seems to me they should stop taking orders. When you enter restaurant on a weekend and it is mostly empty that should be the first sign of expectation. We were greeted promptly and provided very friendly service. When we finally got our meals, they were lukewarm at best. Do not get me wrong, it was very tasty, however the temperature was way below what a quality restaurant meal should be served at. I haven't had Taste in a year but me and my roommate were both disappointed with our experience yesterday. The only good things from my order was the veggie roll(similar to a spring roll) and the white rice. I ordered the Ma Po Tofu, but the tofu was raw and the peas & carrots were crunchy(obviously from a freezer). My roommate's chicken was barely seasoned and "watery" in his chicken and rice dish. So, we recently moved to North Carolina. While in Boone, I told my husband that I wanted Chinese food for lunch. He is such an Asian food snob, he grimaced and said NO! He was raised in San Francisco and claims he knows good Chinese food. I stated that I had not moved to NC just to give up my love for Chinese food. We were told about Taste Grill by the clerk at the bakery, so he agreed to try it. I have to admit that his reluctance was understandable because while on a trip to Prague, I insisted on eating Chinese food and we were served hot and sour soup that had pickles in it. Well, we tried the Taste Grill, it was fabulous! Our hot and sour soup, which we use as the bench mark, was perfectly seasoned and full of delicious tidbits. Our entrees were also wonderful. We are locals and love to eat here at least once a week for their Chinese dishes. We had tried every other Chinese restaurant in the area and found them to be greasy and unfriendly. We find this restaurant not only friendly and welcoming, but the place is clean, the food is made to order and served piping hot with fresh ingredients. How can a place stay open when food is this bad!? I've tried several things and the only reason we've gone back is because we crave Asian cuisine and there just isn't a single quality restaurant with this type of food in Boone. Wife usually gets the soup and thinks it's ok (terrible compared to other places in other towns but compared to nothing...just on). One might think at least something simple like lo mein might come out edible but it's always been complete mush, bland, and the last time I ordered had about 5 tiny pieces of chicken. I've watched them pull egg rolls out and go straight into an order. Enjoy your grease pocket. Would it kill you to let it drain for 20 seconds!? Sometimes you let things go and deal with mediocrity but when two orders of soup and lomein are now $30...do better! If you can't do better than this, just close down and give someone else the real estate and let's hope it's a decent restaurant. I assume the college crowd keeps the doors open. Restaurant is usually pretty empty but they seem to have a lot of takeout orders. Orders are mostly correct which can be a rarity in an area where staff is predominantly students but geez the food is aweful. I'm sorry. I can't give it another try. It's too terrible. Yet another mediocre Japanese/Chinese combo restaurant. We went around 6 on a Saturday and it was steady. They seem to do a large take out business. Kinda confused when we walked in if it was seat yourself or wait to be seated. The waitstaff was kind of just staring at us until I said "we have 8 people." Pretty much everyone went with the traditional, sesame chicken, orange chicken or general tso's. Some had chicken lo mein or fried rice. Across the board it was just very mediocre. A lot of the combinations include soup and an egg roll which is a good deal, but it's not necessarily cheap or tastes great. The waitress was good and friendly and kept up with our drinks. I really don't have much of an urge to go back, however. I think it'd be a much better lunch option as it seems really cheap for that, and they also have take out specials. read more

Wow. Started with the hot and sour soup...best I've had since leaving Atlanta. Nice and spicy, and loaded with tofu, bamboo shoots, and mushrooms (glad I remembered to take the photo before I finished my bowl). I used to go here for their hibachi because it was decent for the price but I always got it to go. Today I brought my vegetarian friend who was visiting and we sat down. Big mistake. She ordered a vegetarian meal and spring rolls - the waiter failed to tell her they had shrimp in them. I only noticed because it was in mine and when I mentioned it she nearly immediately became sick. I ordered sesame chicken and it was basically sweet and sour chicken. Gross. And to top it all off, when I got home, I got sick too... along with my already sick friend. I told the waiter she was throwing up and he still made her pay for the food despite him serving her meat. I have given Taste Grill countless chances because sometimes businesses might just be having an "off night", but every single time I order from them the wait is way longer than they say it is and they mess up my order. I received my order through delivery. They did not give me rice with my entree that says it comes with it, I asked for a quart of soup and I received a pint, I asked for specific sauces and did not get them. The egg roll was soggy and did not taste good. The soup was good, my entree was good, the lo mein looked gross but tasted good. I gave this place another shot. I got the sesame tofu lunch special. It came with a vegetable eggroll, soup, and rice. Very good value. It was $6 and change! The tofu was very well seasoned and the sauce was flavorful. The soup (I opted for hot and sour) was also very good compared to some other ones I have had in the past.
