Dreadful. Absolutely dreadful. Too say that this BBQ was dry is an understatement. Not only was the chicken like sand & painful to swallow the pork was , well inedible. My order was completely wrong. Got the wrong sides, wrong pieces of chicken(legs & thighs) were what I wanted, I got breast & what had to be a pigeon wing. Sides were gross. Hands down the worst mac&cheese I've ever had.....EVER! BBQ WAS over heated and bone chocking dry. Sauces were excellent. Over sauced the meat. Took it back home. Heated it with a bit of water in the microwave covered with a top to steam and rehydrate the meat. It was delicious. But it should not have been dried out. We noticed everyone else was ordering chicken. We were on vacation. Wish we had gone to a different place. We do not recommend the BBQ. We were in Newland for medical reasons and the nurse I was talking to suggested Carolina Barbeque. She said they had the best chicken strips. Well she was right. They were crisp on the outside and moist on the inside. We both ordered the 3 strip meal and bought 1/2 of them home. They were huge chicken strips. Fried okra was crisp but soft on the inside. Homemade thousand island dressing was so good we brought a container home with us. Unsweetened tea was perfect. As were the French fries! I bought some of their Barbeque home and my wife froze it into single serve helpings. Just heated some up for lunch. Smokey flavor and moist. Sweet bbq sauce was perfect. I'm trying to talk Dave and his wife into opening up a second location in Hickory where we live . So far negotiations are not looking good. We may be pulling up stakes and moving. read more

Horrible experience. Paid for two half-rack rib "dinners" and waited outside. And waited. At least 30 minutes. Checking inside, the story was that someone had dropped two ribs on the floor so they had to cook two new ribs from the start and left the two incomplete plates on a lukewarm warming rack. Forever. They were all teenagers and clueless as to what to do next. So one picks the two ribs up off the floor (which everyone had been dancing around) and showed me them, I guess to prove it was true. Then a stupid discussion about bringing one plate out so one guest could watch the other eat and then the other eat later? Ridiculous. Next, the food finally comes and it is almost room temperature. Side of mac & cheese was wet noodles with a gallon of apparently commercial cheese sauce dumped on top. Didn't even bother to mix, let alone bake it together. Completely forgettable. Dining partner pissed and my choice was a failure. 42 bucks for that disappointment. Don't waste your time and money, find a better bbq place! read more

Has stayed consistent since I moved here in 2008-I look forward to coming here everytime I pass this way. In our house, we call the fried chicken "crack chicken"...it's that addictive. This is one of the few places left that is resonantly priced, great food, and caters to the local clientele. Good chicken leg( but nothing to get crazy over, lacked the right amount of smoke, although moist), good fried okra( loved the fact they use simple bredding with no heavy seasoning that often times masks the flavor of okra), outstanding mad mustard sauce( I could drink the whole bottle of it by itself that is how good I thought it was) and lexington sauce( apple cider vinegar based), outragiously atrocious Mac and cheese( so bad, ain't nobody got time for that). Sweet tea is loaded with diabetes, not even 4 large slices of lemon can cut the sugar in it. Service is OK. They never asked you how was the food. Therefore, 2 stars. We have sat out in the front for at least thirty minutes. It's not like it's anything hard, it's just chicken tenders. We even went inside and they just told us to go wait outside. DONT EAT HERE! McDonald's is across the street and Hardee's is next door. Either are better options!!! The employees are wearing flip flops and river shoes which is definitely against health safety codes. They seem to have issues with who's the manager and who is doing or not doing their job. A guy filling the sauces pulled his mask down to whistle while he worked and fill the sauces. He was not wearing gloves and this is after he was hugging the girl in flip flops behind the counter and didnt wash his hands. All of this is irregardless of how AWFUL the food was! Very good chopped BBQ. They have 3 different sauces on the table. Sweet, Mad Dog and Lexington. The sweet was our families favorite. On my last visit, I tried the ribs. Very good. Baked beans were pretty tasty, but I wasn't a fan of their slaw. My daughter said her green beans were really good. We drive from our condo at Sugar Mtn. to dine at Carolina BBQ. We were very disappointed tonight. First, workers were not wearing any masks, even though there was a sign reminding folks " even germs are wearing masks" . We ordered 1 tilapia fish dinner & 1 pulled pork sandwich. Let's review the tilapia. It was passable. It was not deeply fried which was good. But it was just 2 thin filets. The edges were a bit dry. The cole slaw was terrible ! My 2 sides were hush puppies & cole slaw. Let's go back to the cole slaw. It looked like it was made yesterday and left on the counter overnight without refrigeration. It was yellow not white in color. However, I thought looks can be deceiving. NO bad food. I would not eat. So the 4 stars already mentioned in previous reviews are a 2 in my opinion. NO MASKS on cooks or other workers. Some patrons were masked when ordering. Others were not and did not even try to social distance with red lines on the floor. read more

In one of the smallest towns in N.C. This little B.B.Q joint did the trick. Once you walk inside the smell hits you strongly. The smell of hickory wood and "que" is all up in your nose. You can't go wrong with anything you pick. Whether you go for the ribs or the brisket it'll be an experience to remember. The sides are great as well, the hush puppies were really tasty. The only reason I give it a 4 was because of the Mac and cheese it left me wanting something more. (Maybe salt) but over all the place was really nice and homey the service was really friendly and helpful if you ever find yourself in this small little town I would recommend you try it out. read more

Plus, none of the staff were wearing masks as required by the State of NC and the posts on the front door. We found the ribs to be overpriced and pretty tasteless. I'm giving 2 stars because the staff was very kind and the sides were pretty good. The BBQ was cold, old,and dry and the chicken was rubbery. They did give us new BBQ and it was warmer but still dry and tasted like it had been sitting out for days. I ordered white meat chicken but was given dark. I tried it and it was rubbery. They were very kind when we expressed our dissatisfaction and replaced it with white meat. it didn't help is just poorly cooked chicken regardless of what peice you get. I think the lack of food options in the area have distorted the reviews of this place. read more
