Great home style southern food at very reasonable prices. Friendly staff and atmosphere. I have always felt welcome here. They have coloring supplies for the kids and lots of cool mementos of local history.

Cat fish sandwich and Hush Puppies

The service was great! I had two catfish sandwiches and hush puppies, the catfish was very good and flakey and the roll it came on was really good. The hush puppies were good too but alittle burnt. Overall pretty good!

I think what I enjoyed most about this Bar-B-Q eatery was the true down home country meal feel. The servers seem like family, and treat you like family as well. The food was good, and we just did a little treat taste testing since our plan a didn't work out outing whise this was a nice runner up nearby activity that even has a little old country store area where I was able to purchase a bottle of sorghum syrup...not every day you find that, so that was a little added bonus to the day! Sometimes plan b's work out even better then your plan a's, so always stay flexible and enjoy the journey...each precious moment your given!

    Country fried steak

Looking for a BBQ restaurant? This is not it. Even though they have chopped or pulled pork, it is a country cafe/dinner kinda restaurant with a lot of southern favorites & little bbq selection. Started off with fried pickles, full spears in a dill breading that was fried golden. Some spear clumps had raw dough, but it wasn't bad. The pulled pork is the Carolina style, over use of vinegar, but was able to eat. Gizmo ordered the country fried steak. Smothered in a salty brown gravy with onions, reminded her of lunchroom style food. The slaw and baked beans were good. The service was great and friendly. Glad we stopped in, but we probably won't be back through this way again.

I pass this place everyday on my route. It's the definition of a hole in the wall. The place always has cars outside and the food is delicious. I've made it my mission to have a sandwich a day trying each menu item and the ladies that work there are so kind and helpful. I want to sit down and one day and try their dinners. I've had the bbq sandwich, crab cake, chicken filet and the chick wagon and omg they are all phenomenal. You can't beat the price for the food either. I'll be going here daily I took pictures of their menu so you can't see how much they offer.

Corn nuggets, bbq, slaw, hush puppies and onion rings. Yum!

1st experience with NC BBQ and now I want to try it all! (okay, I already wanted to try it all, but dang was it delicious!!!) I tried the BBQ and slaw and the corn nuggets. Altogether yum!! Tip: Don't drive while under the influence of bbq. Definitely made a left turn out there onto a one way road going the opposite direction... still worth it! Mind the right turn. GOD Bless!!!!

The food was great. Loved the catfish and the cheeseburger the two different times we ate there after jobs.

Good eastern NC style BBQ. My sandwich was finely minced. However, would have preferred chopped. Flavor was very good. Excellent fries.

Not much to talk about positively at Currituck BBQ as most things are either bland or just bad…read more The pulled brisket is just a wet sloppy mess that has at least some flavor from some spices but no real smokiness or some fattiness. The same goes for the pulled pork but even less flavor with even less spices being used. To complement the bland meats you do have a variety of BBQ sauces to choose from. The original is absurdly sweet and the South Carolina style has some mustard flavor but the vinegar and sweetness just overpower. The best was the North Carolina style sauce with some spices added in there but the overt vinegar taste can overpower. The chicken is just a rotisserie chicken, no BBQ going on there and is just a waste of a dish. The ribs had some nice pull on them and had a good amount of meat on them but the original BBQ sauce is just so sweet you can't taste anything else. The sides might have been the best things there, and they were still average at best. The mac and cheese was deeply cheesy and flavorful, but the macaroni is overcooked. The sweet potato casserole was very sweet and full of nutmeg offering a nice dessert side. The fries and fried okra were both very average with little flavor or seasoning. The coleslaw was a bit too sweet for me but it wasn't overpowering like most of the dishes. The potato salad is too sweet and had no other flavors. One of the most offensive things is the buns. The buns are some of the worst you can get, making the meal even worse. They almost taste like nothing. Overall horrible food and some of the worst BBQ I've ever had.

We always get the same order, well I do at least because I absolutely love their chicken salad, I always ask for extra. I do love their fries over their sweet potato fries. I just feel like their sweet potato fries could be crispier. Their grilled cheese, burgers, salads, and everything else we have tried have been good. I can't remember a bad meal here. Service is good but they are busy, so sometimes I feel like staff can be short. Our server was a young gentlemen this time and he was very kind, thorough, and checked in on us the appropriate amount of times. The establishment itself is very farmhouse pub vibes, they offer single room bathrooms for men and women and they're always clean. They also have outdoor seating for those nice warmer days. This place stays packed for a reason.

Service was fine but waitress kept calling us "sweetheart" and "sweetie pie" and "honey" which got super annoying after the first 10 times. The coconut shrimp was okay. I don't think I'd order again. A bit too crispy. The chicken salad and fries were really good. The chicken and waffles were chicken strips, not a breast, not what you'd expect in the south. Also, the chicken and waffles didn't come out until the rest of the table was almost done eating. Honestly a waffle and chicken fingers should not take that long to cook. The place was cute but overall just okay. I'd try again but I wouldn't say rush tomorrow. 3.8/5

We ordered two meals - a pulled pork plate with hush puppies, onion rings, and okra, as well as a pulled chicken sandwich with a side of fries. Overall the food was very good, not as much of a smoke ring on the meat as you might see at many BBQ places, but still flavorful. The chicken was a bit dry, but fortunately there's plenty of BBQ sauce on the table. Overall it's a really nice place with solid food and quick service. Clearly this place is popular with the locals. The inside was nice and clean. I would certainly consider stopping here again when I'm in the area.

Anyone who has to make a trip along I-85 through north central NC and south central VA is familiar…read morewith the town of South Hill. It's basically a mid-way point between Durham and Richmond or Virginia Beach, and is right up near the state line, so it kind of makes a natural stopping point. You also know that the options for actually stopping and eating there, are pretty limited outside of fast food. So I was encouraged to find a roadside BBQ shack with more than 4 stars on Yelp about 5 miles off the highway. The place looks the part, an old gas station converted into a BBQ hideaway. Upon pulling in and parking, my hopes were high. Unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience. The service at the counter was friendly and helpful, definitely a high point. I ordered a brisket sandwich combo, for which I chose collard greens as the side (on recommendation), and a tea. It also came with a condiment cup of coleslaw for the sandwich, on request. All told, about 15 bucks. A few minutes later my order was up, and I had a seat on one of the counter stools. Unwrapping the sandwich, I was already a bit unenthused. Standard economy hamburger bun, bit of meat poking out one side. Removing the top bun revealed one solitary slice of brisket about a half inch thick, cut in half, a small portion based on all my life BBQ experiences. Pulling off a piece, the meat had a very pot-roast like texture, not characteristic of recently smoked brisket. In all fairness, unless you are rapidly selling brisket, it is a difficult meat to maintain quality on. I dumped my coleslaw ontop and sauced it up, which helped, I liked the sauce... but the sandwich was a definite disappointment. The collard greens, though cooked properly, were very salty. I was hoping for a little bit of sweetness or vinegar, but just salt. I added some of their vinegar style sauce hoping to help it, but just didn't make much dent. Maybe ordering brisket was the wrong thing to do and pork is more their speed, or a plate is the better route, with a different side for sure... but I don't see myself trying again. The search for decent stop-over food continues.
