This is not a BBQ restaurant . In this photos was the meat from my BBQ meat plate. I don't know if it's beef or pork I couldn't tell. Big slop of meat with store bought Cole slaw and frozen fries. Looked like baby food. My husband got the BBQ beef tips that were like a crock pot meat with salty gravy on top over minute rice ! The waitress was great and so was the ice tea. Spent $40 on barely edible food. Super super disappointed! Not a BBQ place. Look at the picture of the BBQ chicken on there website where are the grill marks? read more

The food was decent but I would not consider this restaurant "BBQ" as you would think. They didn't make brisket today. My husband ordered the bbq sandwich with coleslaw and it barely had bbq sauce. The food is nothing to write home about. The staff was very nice and helpful. The food was mediocre, but it's just justified by the price. The service was great! I had two catfish sandwiches and hush puppies, the catfish was very good and flakey and the roll it came on was really good. The hush puppies were good too but alittle burnt. Overall pretty good! read more

I think what I enjoyed most about this Bar-B-Q eatery was the true down home country meal feel. The servers seem like family, and treat you like family as well. The food was good, and we just did a little treat taste testing since our plan a didn't work out outing whise this was a nice runner up nearby activity that even has a little old country store area where I was able to purchase a bottle of sorghum syrup...not every day you find that, so that was a little added bonus to the day! Sometimes plan b's work out even better then your plan a's, so always stay flexible and enjoy the journey...each precious moment your given! read more

As a lover of BBQ, I was not disappointed and pleasantly surprised about the quality of this excellent chopped BBQ, eastern North Carolina tradition. The sides were great. Blueberry cobbler was great. I got a take out and made two meals out of a large. The directions from Google are wrong, as it has it on the wrong side of the road. Looking for a BBQ restaurant? This is not it. Even though they have chopped or pulled pork, it is a country cafe/dinner kinda restaurant with a lot of southern favorites & little bbq selection. Started off with fried pickles, full spears in a dill breading that was fried golden. Some spear clumps had raw dough, but it wasn't bad. The pulled pork is the Carolina style, over use of vinegar, but was able to eat. Gizmo ordered the country fried steak. Smothered in a salty brown gravy with onions, reminded her of lunchroom style food. The slaw and baked beans were good. The service was great and friendly. Glad we stopped in, but we probably won't be back through this way again. read more

I pass this place everyday on my route. It's the definition of a hole in the wall. The place always has cars outside and the food is delicious. I've made it my mission to have a sandwich a day trying each menu item and the ladies that work there are so kind and helpful. I want to sit down and one day and try their dinners. I've had the bbq sandwich, crab cake, chicken filet and the chick wagon and omg they are all phenomenal. You can't beat the price for the food either. 1st experience with NC BBQ and now I want to try it all! (okay, I already wanted to try it all, but dang was it delicious!!!) I tried the BBQ and slaw and the corn nuggets. Altogether yum!! Tip: Don't drive while under the influence of bbq. Definitely made a left turn out there onto a one way road going the opposite direction... still worth it! Mind the right turn. Finally had a chance to eat inside. The food is still very good. The barbecue sandwich, with cole slaw on it (preferred) or not, comes in a small or a large size and is all the better for being fresh. The fries are frozen but decent. An order of hush puppies is a great supplement to the meal, hot and crispy. If you are a visitor, most likely you will eat barbecue and the related foods I describe above. However, you can find other food as well, such as spaghetti. I cannot say how good it is because I have never had anything else. However, I think it is safe to believe that all the food is good, based on the care taken with the classical North Carolina food. Service is friendly and quick. You can pay at the register at the back of the restaurant, which gives you a chance to pick up some packaged barbecue and cole slaw to take with you to heat up tomorrow. read more

I had to actually add hot sauce to my pulled pork sandwich when I got home, the meet was lacking seasoning but was fully cooked. I'm not one that likes spicy food show me having to put hot sauce on it meant that it was very much so lacking and spices. However if that's how you like your food I do recommend going there. Yelp helped us find this delicious restaurant on our adventure and what was so awesome about this place was the service! When we arrived they seated us promptly and our server came right over. She was full of smiles and suggestions-even offered us samples to try the food. We got the tenderloin and rice special with fried apples and hush puppies, the chicken tenders and baked apples and chicken wrap with onion rings and butter bean pie. All of it was delicious! Good homecooking! Jordan our waitress came back numerous times to check on us. She even brought an extra side for free when I couldn't decide and refills of our drinks for the road! Very good service, bbq was tender and lean but lacked a little in the flavor department. Good bang for your buck overall, large quantity on the sandwiches and also had good fried chicken which is cooked to order and may take up to 20 minutes to make but worth the wait. While working in Gates County, NC for a few days, someone generously offered to bring to us food from this restaurant. Since I didn't actually go to the restaurant, my review is on the sandwiches I had. The sandwich menu has many offerings and all are offered as a small or large sandwich. I believe large doubles the portion of the small. First day I ordered the small Timmy burger. (I was told Timmy is the name of the grill owner's son) The burger came with bacon, cheese and the "secret sauce" - which I believe to be thousand island dressing. burger patty was rather average in size and taste, but the bacon & sauce added to it. Second day I ordered the fried chicken fillet sandwich, and this time made it a large. On it was two chicken fillets, mustard, cheese and relish. The chicken portions were a good size and I enjoyed the taste. Co worker ordered a barbecue sandwich both times, and said he thought it was Eastern NC barbecue done right. read more

This is one of the few restaurants that is still down home. All fresh ingredients. Super nice waitresses. Food is fixed quickly and correctly. Your drink is never empty from constantly being topped off. I don't just hand out 5 star reviews this place deserves it. read more

We pass this spot often and notice it always has cars parked around it. We figured it would be worth it to try since we were passing by at dinner time, and glad we did! It's seemingly in the middle of nowhere, standing out alone on the side of a highway. It's humble exterior is an invitation to all to come in and feel welcome, take a break from a long drive. Casual atmosphere, delicious southern comfort food, and friendly service. We got the country ham sandwich and country fried steak with sweet tea (emphasis on SWEET!) They use kraft ranch, which isn't our favorite, so I opted for sweet potato fries instead of regular. They were delicious! I asked for honey to dip them in and the server happily obliged at no charge. My husband raved about his country fried steak and asked me to write a yelp review so everyone would know how good it is. So here we are. We are glad others reviewed it on yelp, otherwise we might have been apprehensive. Glad to have this spot to visit again on our future trips. read more

Incredibly disappointed in this place. It came recommended by some coworkers. This place is not BBQ. The only bbq they had was pulled pork, no ribs, no sausage, no brisket. My dad and I both ordered the pulled pork sandwich which came out plain and dry, no seasoning at all! The only thing that had flavor were the sides. The Cole slaw was ok, but when you order pulled pork you expect it to have some flavor! This pork was flavorless and even after adding salt, pepper, and their hot sauce, still tasted bland. The service was great but that sadly doesn't make up for the bad food :( read more

I eat here with the rescue squad when on duty or after training. Never had the BBQ but I usually get whatever is the special. The people are friendly and the food is good. It's a good place to eat. Don't forget dessert. They always have fresh cake by the cash register. read more

The Tarheel's friendly staff and appealing ambiance is exactly what one would hope to find from an ideal casual "Carolina-Style" BBQ restaurant plopped aside the highway in the middle of nowhere. The interior is well-lit, clean and folksy, with a sparsely shelved general store accompanied inside. However, anyone pulling in to the gravel pebbled parking lot would be keen to find the absence of the distinct smell of a BBQ smoker to be ominous. Indeed, abandon all hope ye BBQ lovers who enter here. The Tarheel's 'heat-'n-eat', Sysco-type, bagged and canned pre-cooked offerings taste like what one would expect from a generously budgeted prison or a budget-crisis public school cafeteria. Its saving grace is that it benefits from being essentially the only restaurant in a dozen miles as the crow flies, and chasing the crow down may still be the preferable option. read more

You cannot beat the friendly atmosphere of this place. The people are wonderful and the food is down home good. If you're in the mood for comfort food like what your southern mama makes, then this is the place for you. It also has the best fried chicken around, but it's made fresh to order so call ahead if you can't wait for it. Next door is also a lovely spa and boutique with some sweet, girlie gifts. I cannot recommend this place enough. It's a rare find in a world filled with blah chain restaurants. read more
