Taste of Smithfield (ToS) is a lively spot in the historic district of Smithfield serving up the best pork dishes I have had. If you leave hungry its YOUR fault ToS takes the classic and gives them an oinking good makeover. I sampled the pork bites which mimic a boneless chicken wing, but with pork, breaded like chicken fried steak and a side of the ToS sauce. This wonderful appetizer made me excited for my sandwich. For lunch I had the Southern Pork Gent; a filling sandwich that hit all the tastes. The chicken fried pork chop was nestled between their house made pimento cheese and a bourbon berry sauce on a hamburger bun. WOW. As a side I got the sidewinder fries which are like curly steak fries. *Tip* use the leftover ToS sauce to put on the sidewinder fries, its awesome. Inside the décor is a modern farm motif that is a warm homage to the towns roots. My server was Nicole and she rocked. Her knowledge of the dishes and recommendations made for a fantastic experience. The chicken salad sandwich was really good. My friend had smothered chicken and thought it could have more flavor. Another person had the Nathan's hotdogs and they had a lot of toppings on the side which was nice. The service was really sweet and attentive. Parking was around back but still packed. The food is ALWAYS great, and their loaded fries are top notch. There's also a section set aside for local Virginia snacks like peanuts & gourmet pantry items. Smithfield in general is a very cute little town! I can't believe that I've never driven the hour to get here before. We opted to try this restaurant because it was conveniently located and we were starving. We were seated right away and service was good. The gal helping us seemed new, but she was very nice and did provide good service. Food-wise, the only thing that was better than mediocre was the fried green tomato appetizer. It was delicious. We also did enjoy the pigtail fries, but all of our entrees were very basic. The reuben was served on cold, barely toasted bread and had very little sauce. I got a side salad with it and the tomatoes that were "balsamic-soaked" were overwhelmingly sour and ruined the rest of the salad. Overall, not a bad stop if you just want something quick and easy, but I wouldn't necessarily come back for a great meal. read more

What I got was a very dry (no sauce) dish. It was spicy but the lack of any sauce made it difficult to enjoy. Maybe this is their version of the jambalaya dish. The fried green tomatoes was one of the best versions I ever had. The crust was light, the green tomato slice was the right thickness and had a perfect amount of acidity. This place is amazing. Our waitress, Alex, was so so nice and personable. She was also very knowledgeable about the menu items and went above and beyond the entire meal. The restaurant is decorated extremely well and is very clean! The crab and smoked salmon dip was outstanding, the pita chips were fried to perfection and were the perfect compliment to the dip. My husband says the club is the best club he has ever had. It was fresh and flavorful. My son had the castle chicken sandwich- blackened and it was so so good. The flavor was amazing and I actually might get this next time with no bun. It was that good! I had the burger with no bun, with added mushrooms and onions. Oh it was so delicious. Cooked the perfect amount of time, the mushroom were fresh and delicious and the burger itself had an amazing flavor! The brussel stouts- oh my goodness. First time visiting, as I've been back and forth to Smithfield over the years. While the food was delicious, the wait staff ruined the entire experience. It took 10 minutes for anyone to even LOOK over at the door. Then another five to be seated. No greeting what so ever. Just "do you need high chairs?" For our children. Waited another 15 minutes for them to play tag, and figure out who would take our order. Watched the manager leave the restaurant and go home for the night. Thankfully, the young man that waited on us, actually put effort in. I've worked in the restaurant business...and the lack of kindness and care with this staff, would be enough to turn the restaurant into a ghost town, where it would be ultimately closed. Taste of Smithfield has a fantastic and unique menu. It's worth the drive to come and see what they're cooking up! The dining area is beautiful with its dark wood tables. I loved that there was actually space between the tables because so many restaurants cram tables so close you may as well join in the other group's conversation! Everyone made us feel so welcome and our server was super friendly and gave honest opinions about the menu choices. We were a group of 5 and each ordered something different and each of us loved what we got, so that's 5 stars times 5! Note about their hours: Our server told us they close for a couple hours between lunch and dinner, so if you're headed for a late lunch or early dinner you may want to check their hours. read more

I definitely WILL NOT eat there again! I was talked down to, as well as ignored, by my server. I did not get my appetizer the way I ordered it. My sandwich barely warm, and flavorless. When I asked to speak to the manager, I waited 10 minutes, then asked again. I was told, "The manager doesn't have time to speak to you." The following day, I called them, asked to speak to a manager. After waiting on hold for 8-10 minutes, I was again informed that the manager is too busy to speak with me. I feel that they apparently think that the people that "pays their bills", are insignificant. A day without bacon is a day wasted, and rightly so when in Smithfield. Sadly, this isn't really one for the vegans... I chose the Crab Cakes - two HUGE Maryland style crab cakes, packed full of flavor; soft on the inside with a crisp crunch on the outside. For sides, green beans with bacon and onion and also the butter beans. The green beans were absolutely delicious. Crunchy, fragrant and tender, seasoned with salt, a hint of lemon and pepper, and not forgetting the generous savory bacon pieces diced up in the mix, complimenting the sweet and almost caramelized onions - this was green beans as I'd never had them before (don't ask me what rock I've been living under, thanks...) I personally wasn't a fan of the butter beans, but I definitely fished out all of the bacon. I tried some of the Chicken and Ribs and immediately got food envy of my husband's dinner. The meat came off the ribs instantly, no need to put up a fight. Mouthwatering, succulent meat which was rubbed in delicious herbs and spices - complimented by the house bbq sauce, we were beyond impressed. The chicken also packed a punch in flavor, very juicy and tender with a slight kick in spice. Hands down, we were both blown away by the quality of produce and the size of our meals. Next time, I'm ordering the full rack of ribs!!! Taste of Smithfield deserves an update after lunch there on Saturday. My boyfriend and I decided to roam the town for a few hours and walk the park and worked up an appetite before dinner - the Cafe was closed so we wandered directly across the street to Taste of Smithfield. They were pretty dead at around 5pm on Saturday - 1 or two other tables inside so we had our pick and chose to sit outside in their little covered patio area - our server came over quickly and suggested we try the special appetizer of the day: fried green tomatoes. My boyfriend had already seen it on the board and was sold before she said anything - but she assured us it was delicious - we'd get about 5 fried tomatoes and it had a goat cheese smear and some herb balsamic sauce. It was a great size and was out quickly but I don't actually know if it had any balsamic anywhere, I didn't see it, unless it was in the topping on top. It was HEAVY on cheese - like too heavy. But fresh and light. I chose to get a flatbread also because we were planning on eating dinner at Smithfield Station later but I really needed some fuel for walking around the park for a few hours. I went with the pulled pork flatbread with pickled red onion and jalapeños and cheese. It also had some sort of sauce drizzled on top. It was delicious. My boyfriend got a coffee as well and enjoyed it. They had some desserts but we didn't even look. Next time! Used the restroom before I left and it was clean and well-kept. Plenty of parking out back and parking on Main Street. Great friendly service all around and a pleasant afternoon meal enjoying the town. More like a 3.5 stars from me. Nice atmosphere, decent service, but food is mediocre. Had the Fried green tomatoes and the hush puppies for appetizers; green tomatoes were decent, but the puppies were super dry and not much flavor. The sandwich, Cuban pagan was also dry and had a very strong pig smell (you say, it's is pork so it smells like pig, but I beg the differ. If fish smell like fish, then it's bad fish). One of our favorite places to dine in the downtown area. The food is amazing, especially enjoy the veggie burgers and Brussels sprouts made with Smithfield bacon. Came in to dine while visiting VA and was expecting a great experience but we were sadly disappointed. The food was amazing and we had great service from our bartender. Our friends have left good reviews about this spot and made sure we added it to our stops passing through. Everything was perfect up until the female manager in charge passed by. We wanted to ask questions about the restaurant and gift shop but were ignored multiple times. She made it a point to stare and avoid us. The attitude and lack of care was astounding. The offstandish attitude was so apparent that we thought we did something wrong, closed our tab, and left in a hurry. To be fair the guests at the bar were more welcoming and very warm with us. I've never expected a person leading the restaurants staff to have such a stiff attitude towards new guests, but that was our experience. Alex was great! Very friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was very nice and comfortable. The menu was typical so-so, quasi fancy-hipster type stuff. I went with the seafood dip to start, it came out sizzling hot with fresh pita bread (which was really good), the dip was very, very bland, could've used more crab and some old bay but it really just tasted like warm paste with bacon bits on top. The bbq tacos with rice and beans were just as disappointing, I missed the "bbq" part when I ordered or I never would have tried them. The staff was all working hard and serving happy customers, but just not my type of fare I suppose? Seems like a great spot to grab a drink and hang out or maybe a burger? Taste of Smithfield delivers small town charm and comforting food. I loved that it is located right on main street to attract people hanging out in the area. The inside of the restaurant is pretty spacious yet very open and you can see into the kitchen which is nice. We came here for lunch on a Saturday and only had to wait a few mins for table but I know they can get really busy. For a starter we ordered the ham sweet potato biscuits. They were slightly crunchy yet very moist and the salty ham really balanced out the sweetness of the biscuits. These are a must order item! For my entrée I went with a simple club sandwich with sweet potato tots. I loved that I got to pick which flavor of ham I wanted on my sandwich since they offered a few. The sandwich was made well and everything tasted fresh and delicious. The tots were fried perfectly and dusted lightly with cinnamon, making them addicting.
