Ok, I admit it: I grew up in the nice suburbs of a Midwestern state. That being said, maybe I have incredibly high expectations for big-box stores? I've always had trouble at this Target. The time I came to buy headphones, and they were locked up (ok, I guess I can sorta understand that, even though they were $15...) and I waited for 5 minutes while two employees ignored me and continued their conversation regarding their favorite video game. Perhaps the times I've got everything in my cart, got to the registers and realized my wait would be about 30 minutes, and just left. But last night. All I needed was to buy a toothbrush. When I walk to said WALL OF TOOTHBRUSH GLORY, all I see are empty hooks. Seriously. There were 2 brands available. I'm sorry, did EVERYONE in Columbia Heights just go to the dentist for their cleanings as well? Why would a store have so much empty space on a wall full of hooks from which products for sale hang? I just can't comprehend. I'll try again this weekend. My guess? Probably will have fewer toothbrushes, not more. I get it, it's a city. There are more people. But what a bizarre thing to NOT have in stock? Seriously, that wall can hold probably thousands of toothbrushes. Mindblowing. read more

The new Target was understandably understocked at 8pm on a Sunday night, but we were still able to find what we needed! The grocery section was a lot larger here than most stores I'd been to, but not quite to SuperTarget levels. A couple of notes: 1. Sure, the parking garage is easy to navigate and super cheap ($1/hour) but beware: change is given in the form of $1 coins. Yeah, coins. As I discovered this morning at the office, you can't use those in Coke machines. Ugh. 2. The lines are loooooooong. Even in the express lanes. Just be prepared. 3. The shoes are located upstairs, away from the rest of the women's clothing. 4. They have a Starbucks and a Pizza Hut Express inside... not the super sketchy Target-brand "cafe." This is the *only* Target within the District of Columbia so YES, it will be crowded! Duh! Everyone knows, recognizes, and looks for Target, so of course a lot of people will be here! It's in a great location, right next to the metro. Driving is not advisable, unless you need to get something that requires a car to transport. I saw this because parking is very scarce in the area, the roads around here a very busy, and the underground level parking is only accessible via the very, very slow elevators in the shopping center. The store is quite messy, but once again, this is expected given the foot traffic in the area. I do not like that it can be quite difficult to get a store associate. That's one of my only valid complaints!!! read more

The special escalators for the shopping carts are pretty nifty. I saw a guy push his cart onto one and for some reason, I thought something was not right. Oh yeah, he left his daughter (maybe 5 years old) sitting in the cart to ride on the way up. Now, if I were five, I'd think that would be pretty cool, but something tells me that might not be the safest thing in the world. Anyway, they have these red phones scattered throughout, so you can call customer service if you need help finding things. Luckily, the staff seems to be large enough that I was able to get help when needed. It is clean, super big, and the checkout lines are pretty fast. My only hope is that it stays that way. The parking lot is $1 for the first hour. Not bad, not bad. As Cam said before, you will most likely run into someone you know. I ran into a girl I knew from college. Be careful, though. I visited today and was pretty disappointed, because I have high expectations when it comes to Tar-zhay. While they do have a lot of stuff, they didn't have some great things that other Targets in the area do have: - Wet-n-Wild cosmetics. I know you're ashamed to admit it, but there are some of you out there who use W&W. This Target has NONE. - Max Factor. I was searching for Lipfinity. NO Max Factor cosmetics, period. - Folding travel toothbrushes. While they do have travel toothbrushes (in the travel toiletries section, far right front corner of store), they do not have the neat ones that fold. - TIGI After Party hair balm. They have a VERY limited selection of Bedhead hair products. - Gillette Sensor razors for women. Other things that are limited or sub-par: - Equal sweetener: they DO have it, but I bought the last box today. - A lot of the cosmetics needed re-stocking and were just out of stuff. The good news: - Starbucks ground coffee is less than $7 there! Yippee. - They have instant grits, but no variety. - The do have Burts Bees (large selection) as well as Bumble and Bumble hair products. - They have Weight Watchers snacks: both the candy and the ho-ho's. **SPECIAL POST-EASTER NOTE: I got a bag of "Chicks and Rabbits" (like Circus Peanuts) for 69cents. All of the easter candy is DIRT CHEAP and 75% off. It's the best candy deal I have ever seen. Candy's in the very back of the main level of the store. read more

A Target in DC? I had to check today's date to make sure it wasn't April Fool's Day. At last! I went to work, wearing clothes that I planned to wear for the night out in town. A colleague asked me to go walking with her during lunch. I did, thinking that the weather had been wonderfully cool earlier in the week. It was so hot outside, I was sweating worse than the pig. Uh, no no no! I ain't gonna go out like this! Thus, Target came to the rescue. Well, ok, I had to go to Target to get rescued. Que suave! I liked this particular location! I even loved that it was 2 floors, accompanied with a pair of escalators, one for you and one for your cart. How cool is that!?! This particular store is big, which means there are wide selections. The men's department is the best compared to the other locations that I've been. I could have bought a whole new summer wardrobe right there. Thank goodness for my partner being right there with me, curbing my shopping spree. "No! No! No!" Ugh! I thought I left my parents back in Texas. Anyways, I found the perfect outfit to wear for the evening and got compliments. Thanks, Target! Will definitely be coming back. read more

Everyone has a complaint.. But everyone shows up at this target (and the adjacent Best Buy) in the evenings or on the weekends. I'm a customer and l live 5 blocks south of Target. I visit often and have seen the very best and worst of this particular Target. On the plus side, this Target is more than brilliantly convenient, even though it's in the middle of everything in DC there's underground parking and parking validation. Some advice: After many visits I have learned that the secret to this Target is to go during office hours.. After I figured this out I have always had the best of personal service and little to no wait in line or having to navigate around loud, smelly kids or their parents who could care less about them. When I say personal service: nearly every time I ask about where do find this or that, the employee won't just tell me where to find it, they will stop what they're doing and show me where to find it. You can forget about that on the weekends. More advice: In all of my shopping I have had to return a small collection of items, they have a 90 day return policy.. No questions asked.. Best advice: This Target is only disgusting, gross or stressful and looks like the result of an un-natural disaster on the weekends and most evenings. For people who live in DC, this Target is the epitome of convenient and has tremendously good service, that is best when it's not busy, (Mon.-Fri. , 9am. - 5pm.) Otherwise it's a cluster f)#k. FYI: If your shopping for any holiday items, get there early on. You wont find many stockings for stuffing at this target on Christmas eve. I don't work for and I have no interest in Target, I just read the reviews here and noticed that many Yelpers have only wanted to write a review only after something went wrong.. I will note that if you read a review about something seriously going wrong at this Target then buyer be-ware, that's a real yelp to watch out for. read more

You know those people that walk around stores with their headphones on? I am one of these people, only when in this particular store. Pros: Convenience. I live within walking distance which is the ONLY reason I shop at this Target. Cons: Customer service. Out of the 10 times I have shopped her, I recall only ONE cashier greeting me, or saying, "thank you" at the end of the transaction. Noise: Because this is close to a metro be sure to expect every walk of life, especially Moms with undisciplined kids. They cry, they scream and the run around in multiples (this is why I wear the earphones). Lines: Unless you are shopping at 9:00 in the morning, get ready to wait for a VERY long time to pay for your items (oh, and don't expect a "hello" or a "thank you"). Young, unruly staff: The staff will literally yell to each other from across the store. The young assistants working in the women's department are always loud, obnoxious and immature. Items not prices: I must have found at least 3 women's clothing items that were missing price tags. Lucky for me, my cashier ( the nice one, who said "hello and thank you") gave me a shirt for $9. Score!! Look, it's Columbia Heights and it's Target. As long as you aren't looking for good customer service, smiling faces are mature staff people, you will survive your shopping experience at this store :) read more

I have been to this Target before, but this was the first time during Covid. I'm giving one star because of the utter lack of regard for masks in the store. While there is a security guard making sure people have masks when they walk in, there were numerous people walking around with masks below their noses. To make it worse, many of these people were actually the employees of Target. I counted at least half a dozen wearing their masks below their nose. One employee ran by me with no mask at all - when I asked him why he wasn't wearing a mask he said that he was running to the break room to grab his. So he basically wandered through the store and up to the second floor without a mask. There was one checkout line open in a long line. They tried to funnel everybody through self check out. Employees not that friendly or helpful. Target needs to flag this store. It's got serious issues. I won't be back. read more

Arrived at 10pm to pick up an online order that was ready. When I told the employee at customer service what I was there for she started sighing and spinning around as if the items would simply accio their way to her. A few more minutes of throwing things around in the back room, bringing a manager over, watching the customer service line start to grow, and soon both of them spinning around in circles telling me Well it's not here. The best part? Customer service employee: "So....do you want me to cancel the order?" No, please charge me. I needed construction paper. I needed party supplies. I didn't need a box of 4 KitchenAid prep bowls with lids. I needed laundry detergent. I needed to pick up photos. This is why I love this Target. I got everything I needed in one whole swoop. I ordered my prints online from my Flickr account and picked them up from Target an hour later. And 7 of them were free. (Another reason I love Flickr). For my metro stop photo project, I have this huge bare white wall in my living room which I am making into a huge metro map (hence the need for the construction paper) and then am tacking on pics of every metro stop on their correct spot on the map. (Of course, pictures will follow of this masterpiece.) Each pack of construction paper was only $1.87 -- YESS!! I also managed to score some pretty paisley plates and napkins for my upcoming housewarming party. No, I did not need the KitchenAid prep bowls but you know how little restraint I have for kitchenware...they were only $10! Oh I heart this Target. Mostly I love that I can pick up my photos here after ordering them on Flickr. read more

I should state upfront that I have an unhealthy obsession with Target. This being the case, I have suffered greatly since my move to the District. Nine months without Target is a sad, sad state of affairs...but no more! Move over, mom and pop...cheap, mass-produced goodness has arrived-and to add insult to injury they brought Starbucks along as well (which is even funnier considering that there is one directly across the street). Now, if I had the money to care about mom and pop, I would. But the truth is, I'm poor. And Target allows me to shop without panicking over my tiny amount of fundage. I woke at 7am on Saturday just to visit the brand spankin' new store. I know this is pretty sad, and I'm coming to terms with that; however, I was not disappointed. Oh no, not one...but TWO levels of affordable goodness. I am now dreaming of all the items I will purchase on my next visits...a crockpot, a mixer, cheap jewelry, towels... This time I walked out with two shirts, hangers, a paper towel holder and some cleaning supplies...for under $45. The only way this location could be beat for convenience is if it were directly across the street from my apartment building. Or if I could gain access to it through teleportation. Screw you, CVS! Oh Target how I want to hate you, but I just can't! This is a pretty good sized Target and even has a grocery section. The grocery isle even has some organic items! ***Suggestion, get Target's sangria which comes in juice boxes and you can take them into sporting events/ jazz in the gardens etc*** The apathetic staff generally won't fight you on a price dispute and will "ask how much the item was" leaving it up to your discretion and/or moral values. ***Another suggestion: Don't accidentally wear a red shirt and khaki's unless you are knowledgeable enough to direct confused customers where to find the hand towels or other random Target wares. *** read more

Earlier this summer, I left this store with no fewer than 50 packets of Instant Ramen. The ramen, bundled in packages of five, sold for a budget-defying $1.75. First, the woman at customer service wasn't the most polite. She even anwered to update someone on what time she was getting off while talking to me. Then it took manager forever to come to the front. And after that, I'm sooo confused. Apparently if you forget your card they can't give you a temporary printout for use. I can open an account with my social and license, but can't use my account w/o my card even if I have government ID and provide social. Manager actually said it was illegal. But, I can get a print out at Nordstrom. So is it because of the location of this store??? Is it only Target that can't provide this level of customer service? Or is truly a new law? And where cn I find it. Corporate office is closed. I just want my 5% discount. I'm going over to Potomac Yard...I will take my card just in case. But, Im going to ask their customer service. This Target pretty much sucks to sum it up. First off, they are always out of stock of whatever you go there looking for, the selection is not impressive and the prices are standard. You know those boxes that go inside the ikea bookshelves? $15 each!!! Christmas lights? $10-20 for a pack of 100!!! It's like wtf. (BTW: xmas lights at CVS, 600 lights for $13 when on sale). It's always a zoo inside, with people and children running around like animals, and the lines are super long. The only reason I give this Target 2 stars instead of 1 is because the lady at the returns desk was very nice and assisted me exchanging an item and she didn't give me any headache because I forgot my receipt. Tip...14th street in front of Target offers free 15 min parking, although these spots are usually taken up, but is nice to try and run in and out if you have to grab a few things. read more

Absolute. Worst. Target. Ever. It's disgusting. It's gross. It's stressful. It constantly looks like a tornado went up and down the alleys. I've uploaded some pictures of what the shelves look like -- they're constantly out of stock with things just scattered about in the wrong places. It's like a zoo in side with people everywhere and kids just running up and down the aisles. I've been to a lot of Targets from California to New York. The company should be absolutely ashamed of the place. So I was in on Friday picking up a few things. I managed to get some cleaning supplies -- everything else on my list was simply out of stock. I went to the express line, the cashier (as usual) didn't say hi. Then, after she rang everything up and took our money, turned to someone five registers away, another cashier and started having a convesation. She didn't even bother to try and bag our items. She had to talk about the slim jim she just had! You've got a customer in front of you trying frantically to bag their own items because there's a line of 10 people behind you, but oh, the slim jims! That cashier way over their needs to hear about the slim jim I just had! So I won't do my job but I'll stand there and shout across the store! It's pathetic. read more

Customer Service That Leaves a Bad Taste in Your Mouth (especially when you have to hold your tongue from cursing) It's a convenient store location for DC and has competitive prices like all other Target stores, but that is where the silver lining ends. This store location would benefit from better customer service. Nearly every time I go, I experience such rude service that I vow to never to come back. Training for customer service as basic as offering to help you put your bags in your cart when you've got a baby in tow is desperately needed. A bonus would be when the employee at the register doesn't mock you for forgetting your bags. Knowing where items are located is a no brainer. At the very least, employees should be able to direct you to the general region of the 2 story shop. Don't even get me started on the disarray of products on shelves, out of stock items and unmarked prices. I hate to say it, but I would rather spend my money elsewhere and drive to Virginia to the Target off of the I-395 just so I don't have to encounter rude, incompetent customer service at the Columbia Heights store. It really makes a difference, and parking is free and abundant. This time was the last time I will ever shop at this location again. read more

I appreciate having a Target in a prime spot in DC for the convenience. But I really dread coming here. Everything is a mess and you will find things constantly placed in the wrong aisles. Additionally, it is always a gamble regarding how you will be treated- some staff there are really nice and helpful, such as customer service, who always have been very helpful in spite of dealing with very rude customers- but others are very intimidating- in particular the dressing room workers. I was there one time and one worker literally yelled at all the people in line to move farther back. I also have on many occasions heard the dressing work workers talk about how stupid customers are and how much they hate their jobs. Two stars because I like having a Target close by, otherwise not so great. read more

This target is convenient as its located in the DC USA shopping center in Columbia heights. If you don't find what you need here, chances are there a more specialized store within a block that will have what you need. This place gets crowded - especially in weeknights and weekends. It's often full of teens which can make your shopping experience less pleasant. The staff is neither friendly not motivated so don't expect help finding what you're looking for. They carry everything other targets do, but given the stores High volume they are often out of a many items. Clothing is especially bad, regular sizes are near impossible to come by. The store is laid out over two floors, the lower main level had a decent selection of fresh produce, dairy, frozen goods and dry stock. It's no substitute for a grocery store but definitely hits the spot if you're shopping for a fee select items. The store also has a Starbucks and a pizza Hut for which the lines are always unbelievably long - skip these and go to the starbucks accross the street for better service and quality! Due to the volume, lines to check out are often incredibly long. Be prepared to wait. read more

This Target kind of let me down. I am originally from Minnesota (land of 10,000 lakes and 10,000 Target Stores.... where Target's headquarters is based out of and where Target started), and in Minnesota the Targets are pristine. They're huge, clean, sparkling, fully stocked. They're like mystical mazes full of amazing appliances, decor, clothing, and other items that just make your life easier. This Target was dirty, items weren't stocked or were in the wrong places, there weren't many goods on clearance, the displays weren't creative, the lighting was poor, and it wasn't as large or didn't have the selection as ones in other areas (including the one in Arlington/Pentagon City - that one is much better!). I can't complain too much - when it came down to it, I was glad to have gone because the prices are better than most other places. And, this Target is the only place in the city that I've been able to buy inexpensive pet (cat) goods - including a cat carrier that my cat doesn't want to go near, cat food, a scooper, toys, etc. Way cheaper than Cleveland Park's stupid Petsmart or whatever it is. However, the trip wasn't the relaxing shopping experience I'm used to. Too bad. read more

Having recently traded my life in the suburbs for an urban car-free lifestyle, I was happy to find a Target within walking distance of Metro. After reviewing the many negative reviews here on Yelp, I was more than a little hesitant to visit. I was expecting hell on earth, based on reactions from other users. Luckily, I found quite the opposite during my experience! I went around 4PM, hoping to beat most of the after work crowd. It was conveniently located right across the street from the Columbia Heights Metro stop. Granted, it WAS NOT in the best part of town... all of about 3 minutes were spent crossing the street, so that was kind of irrelevant. Once inside, this Target didn't appear to be much different than any other Target I've been to. Same selection, same number of customers. Part One of a Three-Part Review ~ Try to Follow along So at 9 pm or so I check my phone and realize I can be at this Target before closing if I take Metro from that current location of Silver Spring station on the Red Line over to the Green Line and to Columbia Heights. That's part of what makes this place Five-Stars. Easily accessible. So I go into the Mall-like complex that also houses Modells and Bed, Bath and Beyond and head up the escalator stairs to Target. It's my second trip here and I end up doing two things: buying a $10 polo shirt (which I'd later pick up something similar from @ Modells) and a pair of jeans. I also do some scouting and see they have a nice selection of beer and wine. "hey I can get mini-microwaveable Deep Dish Pizza as well....!". It's a wrap. I officially Love This Place. Good location, accessible, open late, diverse enough to be interesting plus some other convenient stores nearby. On top of all that, at check-out, I saw No Joke: Birthday Cake Flavored Gum. WTF ! I think I have pretty well managed expectations for what to expect from a Target or Walmart in the city. I expect the staff won't be experts and that the store won't be as stockedas the Targets in the burbs. This Target is surprisingly clean, organized, well stocked and well managed. I had to laugh when I read someother reviewer's distaste for paying to park in the garage. The fee is minimal and you can always find a spot. It is worth $1.50 to not deal with the hassle of limited parking, especially when parking in commercial areas of DC can at times be impossible. read more

I love Target. Love Target. Love Target. I go out of my way to find the nearest Target. I was sad when the formerly-rough Columbia Heights became suburbia and built up what is now known as DCUSA. On the other hand I was beyond excited and happy to see the Safeway horrorfest be razed and turned into what is now known as DCUSA. Target is a destination and let me tell you this destination is worth travelling to. Are their long lines? Yes Are their great deals? Yes Can you spend $100 in here within 30 minutes? Yes Is parking reasonable and cost effective? Yes (if you don't mind waiting in pedestrian traffic) Target always has and will continue to be my one-stop necessities shopping destination. No matter how many Walmarts are built within a two block radius of where I live or work I will go out of my way to DCUSA. Last Saturday Target was offering 10% off your purchase. This Target is the GOAT. Stays open late and always has a great selection. Staff are eager to help, but don't interfere with your shopping process. Self checkout goes quickly because there are so many registers. There's a large Starbucks in the store if you need a pick me up. Also, their $3 section did not disappoint - much to my wallet's dismay. If you need anything while in Columbia Heights, I'll bet you can find it at Target. They have everything. Cheers! read more

I've never been a huge fan of Target. Yes it's cheap and has a gazillion items in stock but that only tricks you into spending more than you should on something you don't need! My roommate and I visited the DC Mall Target after months of anticipating its opening. And we also had a bunch of coupons, including $5 off $10 we got in the mail. So the cart escalator is kinda cool but this place is enormous. I felt like I was back in the suburbs of Long Island (not a pleasant environment)! I took off 2 stars for the terrible service we experienced at the register. We had an issue with one of our coupons and the cashier was unable to explain to me why the discount wouldn't register. I had to ask her to call a manager who promptly corrected the issue. read more

I have a serious love-hate relationship with this Target. As much as it irks my spirit to find that my most precious and coveted essentials are often out of stock, I nevertheless insist upon coming here for most of my "everyday" needs. Why? Because it's convenient. And it's the only place in DC where you can find toilet paper, fresh fruit, and Christmas decorations all under one roof... moving along. What can you say, other than it's Target. Who doesn't like Target?? As I've stated, my only major qualm with this particular location is with the limited supply issue. But it should be equally noted that this is largely due to the fact that people all over the District inhabit this place like a pack of roaches on a daily basis. I can't and won't hate on it completely because it 1) is right near a metro stop, 2) is surrounded by a plethora of street parking, 3) has pretty friendly staff, and 4) sells everything. If we could get some slightly better stocked shelves I'd be much more inclined to say that it was on the Up & Up. read more

I live two blocks away, but I have been either going out to the Target in Wheaton (accessible by metro) or going with friends to the one in NOVA because I can't rely that what I need will be in stock here. This store is always sold out of basic items and I get tired of having to fumble through the panty hose and stocking area, because they don't stock the shelves correctly (they put it where they feel like it, so it doesn't match with the price/description tag). Poor customer service. I DO LIKE: The efficient checkout lines and the food area. I actually buy my milk at Target because it's cheaper than Giant across the street and I don't have to stand in that huge line there. read more

This place is a zoo, and like many Targets, the shelves are frequently picked over, especially if you go in the evening. If you do decide to shop here, don't go until you have built up a nice shopping list. I don't know why, but I've never seen any of this store's many express check-out lanes open. This is a huge turn-off when I want to run in to buy clothes hangers, and have to wait 20 minutes in line behind someone buying everything from kids clothes to cheap crappy patio furniture. Yes, this store sells beer and wine. Who cares? You can get beer and wine just about everywhere in DC... why would you come to Target to get this stuff? read more

It is a smaller target so doesn't have the usual stock. People are helpful but hard to find. Stock is generally good.

Remember that line from the movie Friday - "Y'all ain't never got two things that match. Either y'all got Kool-aid, no sugar. Peanut butter, no jelly. Ham, no burger. Daaamn." That quote sums up this Target in a nutshell. The location is great for us carless individuals, but this Tarjay's inventory is chronically weak, no matter how early I go, no matter the day of the week. They're selection of baby gear is lacking. The selection of lamps is lacking. I was just there this past Saturday morning and they had no stainless steel trashcans. Seriously? Weeeaaaakkkk. But, you can't beat their prices, especially clearance items. Since I prefer to shop where I live, I'll always love and patronize this location. I'll just heed the advice given by another yelper to shop during office hours, if I can. read more

Okay, now I see what some of the negative reviews were speaking of... Don't visit on the weekends. It's super crowded, dirty, and items are not in stock. Items are also improperly labeled and/or priced (I saw this during our first visit). The workers are a bit unprofessional--2 workers congregating around a cashier and talking as she rang up my items, chewing gum in a customer's face at the customer service counter. And, some items I bought were not in my basket. But, I went back the next day, and it was no problem retrieving them. It is the only Target in the area, but I don't know if that's a good excuse. read more
