If you want overpriced, low quality, faux-vintage home goods sold to you by arrogant, rude and unpleasant people - this is your spot! They occasionally have some great unique pieces, but that is becoming increasingly rare. It seems to have morphed more into a confusing assortment of newer Ikea-level furniture presented as vintage, gift soaps & candles and random clothing. But what really makes this place special are the people - the staff / owners here seem to actively dislike their customers lol! I lived around the corner for 6 years and used to drop in regularly. They revolve between completely ignoring you while laughing to each other, outright hostility, and aggressive indifference (ask a question - they shrug while walking away lol). To make it all just a little more uncomfortable, it seems like half of what they have on the floor is "unavailable". No signs, no explanation, just when you say you would like to buy it they say it's "unavailable" and walk away lol. I don't know who this place is supposed to appeal to, it seems like they are going for tourists, and maybe young people who just moved here and don't know any better. I've loved the shop for many years and they've still got some great unique pieces coming through here for moderate prices, worth following their instagram to see. From my recent visit I noticed there's way less vintage or antique items, more new products and clothes and soaps. Small gifts and such, which is nice, it's just less 'awesome antique finds' and way more 'Anthropologie.' Customer service has always been bullocks. read more

Unfortunately, I can't recommend because of the lack of customer service and rudeness of the staff. The space is beautifully put together and there are some interesting pieces. I've purchased a couple of things I truly love. It's been my experience in buying antique or vintage furniture that there is some knowledge of the history or provenance - at GoodWood, there is no awareness, and less than zero interest. A simple "can you tell me anything about this" gets blank stares, "no, we don't know where the lots come from," or the most epic answer I've received: "it was probably handmade for a specific purpose" with a shoulder shrug. Indeed! A specific purpose you say! I've gone through with a couple of purchases because I've loved the pieces so much and convinced myself I was rescuing the furniture from a toxic environment. The floor manager (I assume) and several of the salespeople in the floor were actively dismissive and seemed uninterested, and every time I've been in, several have been chatting and ignoring customers - to the point that the first time I was in there I looked around the store for a sales rep assuming they were customers! The woman at the till was lovely, fwiw. Also - for the "new" items - check IKEA's website - at least one lamp we saw was an IKEA model marked up above retail value. So we have a few rental properties that we utilize for Airbnb. Although they are rental properties we make them look and feel. Like a home away from home for our guests. On the weekends we seek out the antique stores in whatever town we are in. I found Good Wood called to see if they were open. And an employee a pleasant Hispanic guy answered and said come on by. When I arrived I couldn't believe the beautiful collection on display at good wood. Not only are their collections beautiful. But the store is well kept and easy to navigate. We visit many antique shops and they are not well kept and organized. Many are filled with loads of furniture and items all over the place. I have gone to some that are so unorganized that you can't focus on shopping with all the junk in the walkways and placed all over the store. Not Good Wood you are in for a treat. while walking around looking for items I saw one of the good wood team cleaning a glass table. The space is filled with charm zen and amazing finds. I visited this store earlier this evening to purchase a fragrance from a niche brand (Lubin) that is sold no where in this area but THIS store. I like the mix of the new and the old. Sometimes I go in just to pick up some incense, but sometimes I go in and find a piece of furniture that I must have. The prices are modestly high, but not ridiculous, especially for a place that curates the pieces. I've been to other "vintage" stores where the quality and prices doesn't compare to this place. You are not pressure to buy anything when you go in and generally I like to go in and just get inspired on a Saturday. Worth the stroll. I wish they had multiple GoodWood stores here in DC. This place is a dream. While I haven't really looked into their clothes and accessories, the furniture is enough for me. I have yet to see anything this good in DC and furthermore the DMV. The quality of a portion of their items is more or less equivalent to something you would see at Restoration Hardware (and I have plenty of the RH furniture in my house to assure you that's a compliment.) My only disappointment is that I hadn't found this place any earlier. The selection is beautiful, high quality, extremely unique and classy. I can't say enough about this place. Easily one of my favorite places in DC. Easily. Beautifully curated store. Super-friendly staff...And they are DOG-FRIENDLY!!! They asked if they could offer my dog a treat as soon as they saw him! There were quite a few beautiful pieces that I loved (but would never fit into my tiny apartment)...Large wall mirrors, glass-windowed cabinet, work table, velvet chairs... Also some unique jewelry pieces from Paris (though not pure silver) and Rustico leather journals (made in the USA). They also have some awesome and snarky stationery that I will definitely come back for when I have an occasion to send a card. Like Jaye F mentioned, the smell of this place is pretty intense when you walk in, but I mean intense in a good way. The smell of wood mixed with murphy's oil. The stuff here is well worn, but high quality and given some love to bring out the imperfections that make each piece lovable and its own. From gorgeous, huge and heavy armories to dining room tables, the pieces here tend to be on the big side. There's also lamps here and decorative pieces like a twin statue set of samurais. In the middle around the register is a glass case filled with beaded bracelets and gold tone necklaces..and a random but complete set of glass beakers like the ones you had in science class. read more

Good Wood seems emblematic of District sleight of hand. There are occasionally some nice finds, but by and large this operation seems to rely on heavy markup, customer ignorance, and the chicanery of 'patina' they carry. I still browse, and occasionally buy here. However I have yet to see any legitimate Limoge or Eames, and the prices are on the higher end for no legitimate reason. I'd check out Nana's Atioc in NY for an operation that holds their own with knowledge of vintage... read more

How I wish I could dispense zero stars. This place is amateur hour. Clown Town. Has gone gradually down hill over the past several years. The buyers have solid taste but seemingly 40% of the items are not for sale, thus this shop is a waste of space for the neighborhood and waste of customers' time. The prices are criminal; this is a shop for naive antique shoppers and/or tourists. Shame on the owner as her prices are offensive for the poor quality of the items (that are actually sold). The middle-aged lady who works in the shop often (presumably the owner) is heinous, an icecube at best. I am around her age and she treats me and all other customers with straight contempt. This psycho also has the audacity to follow my husband and I (*and every other customer who walks in*) around her shop; there is a special spot in hell for individuals who do this. This is actually the main reason my husband and I will never return, and we spread the word to all our district friends and coworkers. If you want an amazing antique furniture, decor, clothing, you name it experience: go to Frederick, Maryland, but specifically a giant historic warehouse there called "Cannon Hill." This is one of my favorite establishments in Washington, DC. I love their approach which sounds a bit hodgepodge on paper, but exceeds my expectations for a antique furniture/vintage items/independently made clothing store. First there is the beautifully refurbished furniture. Then there are the household items, like stained glass windows, Hmong made throw pillows, and geometric from the 1960s that are often classy and not kitschy, which is not easy to find in vintage items. Add full skirted sun dresses that look like they are from the 1950s, but are actually made by hand by a contemporary designer, and excellent music, ranging from late 70s/early 80s era Bruce Springsteen, to mid to late 60s era raga tinged blues rock by The Yardbirds, and you've got a recipe for an incredible store that I love to visit regularly. read more

This is not only my unequivocal favorite furniture shop in all of DC, but it's also one of my absolute favorite stores to shop in for anything. The amount of treasures waiting to be claimed at GoodWood is staggering, and it's one of those types of places where I walk in and just want everything. I would have to say this store definitely leans more towards the masculine in terms of style, with a huge nod to rustic pieces and vintage guy paraphernalia, but that doesn't mean women can't appreciate it too, as Julia found out when she visited with me and fell in love with several items. This was actually the last stop on our tour of the unofficial furniture district that extends through Logan Circle and up to U Street, and the one I had been holding out the most hope for in terms of acquiring some new pieces to replace some stuff my previous roommate had taken with her when she moved out. They absolutely did not disappoint me. The biggest difficulty was in refraining from loading up on all the other miscellaneous goodies in the shop while trying to focus on what I was primarily there to obtain. I should point out that the owner here doesn't really negotiate prices, because he doesn't need to. They've got a pretty high turnover rate here and I always see new things each time I visit. The quality is also far above what you'll find in competing stores such as Miss Pixie's, where items like tables and benches are made to look antiqued without actually being so. There is so much to find on every surface here, from vintage luggage sets, to old dentures, to several types of awesome taxidermied turtles, the gift possibilities are nearly endless. AH-MAZE-ING. Whenever I am in the U Street area, I get giddy like a school girl because I know GoodWood is nearby and cannot resist stopping in simply to look. The space, the goods, the wood! I want everything in this place for my house. GoodWood has something for everyone--whether you veer more towards modern trends or traditional--you will find something here you like. It is the perfect place to shop for that unique looking dining room table for which you have been looking, or maybe it's an outdoor chair you have been trying to track down. Maybe you want some vintage inspired lavender soap or jeans, or perhaps a well kept vintage bike. Sounds like a random mix of things, but GoodWood makes it work. There is so much stuff and it could feel like an unorganized garage sale, but each item is meticulously placed so the entire store has a wonderful flow to it. There are also some amazing jewelry items that caught my eye last time I was in there...I am loving broaches these days. Granted, you will need to save your pennies because not everything at GoodWood is cheap. However, I find that spending $200+ on an item that I love is completely worth it (note: $200 is usually the base price...I think the most expensive thing I saw last time I was here was $1200. I'd say the average is between $250 and $500 for most items, however). Some nice furniture but absolutely the rudest staff in the world. I have bought a few things from here over the years and have always been slightly annoyed by how rude the staff are but today was the last straw. I wasn't greeted when I walked in the store but I was stalked by one of the sales people and treated like a criminal the entire time I was in the store. She just stood and stared at me as I tried to shop and followed me everywhere, not even at a polite distance. There were several other customers in the store who didn't get the same treatment so I guess I just didn't look enough 'the type' to shop there. Total snobs. I like this place, always have, even through the changes the last couple years. I was looking for a bakelite bangle in here but they only had some rings, still vintage and awesome though and I picked one up. I heard a rumor that the owner has a secret cache of bakelite that never goes on sale, doesn't seem fair! I really like their selection and the darling gentleman working could not have been more kind and considerate helping me. Had the place all to myself on a random Wednesday afternoon. While the furniture is the best part, the porcelain glove forms were super cool, but really, where the hell am I going to put those? Big fan. My favorite pieces of furniture in my home are from here, and I love to just browse. Good selection, friendly owners, and fast (often same-day) delivery. The prices seem reasonable to me for the generally good shape the pieces are in. Pleasing selection of art, jewelry, and extras in the store. Although I've never bought anything other than furniture, the art knick-knacks make browsing in the not-overly-crowded store pleasant and fun. One note: Smell the furniture all over before you buy it! This store in general smells of a very pleasant melange of wood smells, but that can mask the smell of a particular piece. Just saying the words "Eames" and "Saarinen" get me all hot and bothered. Yes I know that sounds disgusting, but it's very true. So a place like GoodWood is sort of like a Mecca for me when I need furniture or décor pieces for my apartment. It's also the sorts where I need to watch my wallet like a hawk because I could quite honestly pick up everything from this store if I had the space for it. If you're looking to add a little bit of a unique flair to your apartment, and like the mid-century modern look (think clean lines, symmetry, slightly industrial, distressed furniture); then you will probably love this store as much as I do. They have a wonderful, well curated selection of heavy-duty furniture ranging from dining tables, chest of drawers and massive coffee tables to more compact bookshelves and accent tables that are DC sized apartment friendly. A big bonus is that they have smaller pieces like vintage cigar boxes (turned jewelry container in my apartment), serve ware and wall art which are simple ways to introduce a little character in your apartment; or make great gifts for artsy friends. The prices here aren't terribly crazy, but it's certainly no Ikea so be mindful of that. And at the end of the day a Saarinen table at Design Within Reach could set you back by at least $1600 - you can get something like it for a third of the price at GoodWood. Like a siren's song, Good Wood plaintively calls my name every time I go to Robin Shuster's 14th and U Street Farmers Market (which you must do BTW). I can hear its low whisper, "Come see our yummy furniture." Inevitably, I can't resist the pull of so much great furniture at a great price, and I end up going in, dragging my poor husband with me as he groans in despair. He knows I can't walk past Good Wood without a peek, even if I don't need to buy anything. I have to "get my furniture fix." The people here are friendly and have achieved just the right balance between attentive customer service and discretion. If I want to be left alone to muse about my floor plan changes or next decorating fugue, I can do so without being molested to buy something. On the other hand, answers to my questions are never far away and are happily provided. Their eclectic mix of French Louis XV , American Contemporary, Arts and Crafts, and other periods of design make me reluctant to share the wealth, but I must. This place is so good I'm afraid to tell people about it. I'd been searching for a desk for months. My budget was pretty much unlimited; I'm not rich, but I'm a computer programmer, so a great desk is very important to me given how much time I spend there. I checked out a great many of the furniture stores in DC, certainly all on the U ST / 14th St corridor, including the new Room and Board. Most modern furniture I find wildly overpriced and soulless, and the used furniture shops generally have lower quality or outright ugly pieces. Enter GoodWood. Somehow I passed this place over and over again without realizing it was a furniture store. I walked in on a whim and was immediately blown away. The design of the store itself is amazing and intricate: you're immediately drawn into every little corner; you want to explore. Goodwood is the cure to DC's boring furniture market. The store is curated with an obviously very talented eye and a real love for each piece in the store. The items are widely varied yet strangely cohesive. You owe it to yourself to walk around, if only for interior design ideas. The prices seem high only if you are unused to buying quality furniture. If, however, you have been searching, as I have, for well-built handsome furniture, you may find, as I did, the prices to be almost comically low. Remember that you are paying not just for the piece, but for the expert selection. Visual crack. For months, piles of clothes threatened to take over my apartment until a gentleman friend complained so much about not having anywhere to sit, I had to act. Yet I wanted something decorative as well as functional, something that didn't just store my clothes but displayed them as well. Turns out, this was a tall order. Said friend took me to Good Wood and lo and behold there it was, a beautiful 19th century wardrobe with a rack, drawers, and many hooks. Instant love. Because I live near the store, the owners graciously waived the delivery fee and promptly brought the wardrobe to my place (in an old red Ford pickup no less). The piece constantly brings a smile to my face. Every time I've been back, I overflow with lust over the oodles of gorgeous things they have. In my last two trips, I snagged a red cracked resin beaded necklace, two white cracked resin bangles, a red beaded necklace, and something that's been on my wish list forever: the perfect pair of high-waisted, wide-legged, black wool YSL trousers. The owners pick the best of everything--clothes, jewelry, perfumes, and of course, furniture. Good Wood is a little pricy, but with a keen eye and some luck on your side you can often find some bargains here. They have some stunning pieces of refinished furniture and really gorgeous antiques. Its an eclectic mix of offerings so you have to browse carefully because there are a lot of surprising little items lurking throughout the store if you're paying close enough attention. Recently, we were lucky enough to find a fabulous red arte-moderne chair that is just fantastically retro. They also had some great Marcel Breuer chairs that were in great condition, but a little out of our price range...sadly. Hanging in my bathroom are two fabulous little bell-epoque style window glasses with plantation era drawings on them...then a very Kara Walker-esque black overlay on top of them with victorian era imagery. i got the pair for $25- you can't beat that! When I'm on U st I love to stop in this great store and see whats new as their merchandise changes over fairly often. Its fun to browse at the inventory and see the real craftsmanship of the antiques. read more

So many intriguing, nostalgic and fascinatingly ODD items flow through this place, I feel drawn to stop in just in case I might miss seeing something fantastic. Want a wooden deck chair that looks like it floated to the surface after the Titanic sank? They have it. How about a Mad Men-era phone kiosk? Yup. antique wooden mannequin? Can I have everything inside GoodWood? My mom and I came here to pick out a few pieces for my new apartment. First, the store is beautifully curated, to the point where I wanted to move in! I found an AWESOME stainless steel kitchen table and a beautiful vintage rug. The prices, in my opinion, are fair, though do be aware that you're paying for a slight DC mark-up. Delivery was also a breeze. Their delivery guys came the next day (on time!) with both the table and rug. They moved both pieces into my place without any damage.
