The place is in a gas station, so there isn't a drive thru. I prefer a drive thru, but was willing to go in for some good breakfast. You have to go way in the back to find it. The lady at the cash register was very friendly. You place your order and wait inside the gas station for them to give you your order. I went in wanting breakfast tacos. But the choices were better. The breakfast torta was delicious! The barbacoa tacos were not greasy, they were very tasty. My husband got the breakfast burrito, and he really liked it. The gas station is cramped, there is so much stuff everywhere. But it is worth going in for some really good food! read more

There are 6 locations, this location is closest, and it is in a gas station open 24/7. It's right across the street from the strip mall that has my favorite lunch in Texas: Empa Mundo (if you have not been there, get in your car and go to Empa Mundo immediately!) This place was also very good, but I think avoid it in summer b/c the only seating is in your car, or a partially shaded table just off the gas pumps. The one thing you need to know is: get the Trompo (HA!, I rhymed!). I opted for the 3 taco plate b/c I always like to try the beans in all mexican places, the rice was unremarkable. They ask if you want flour or corn tortillas, I got 1 corn and 2 flour to see which was better, and the flour was better for me. It also comes with grilled onions, fresh onions, limes and 2 (hot) sauces on the side. This Trompo meat was glorious... tender AND chewy, with bits of char in places, all well spiced (yes there were a few very small inedible bites, but that is to be expected). Looks like you can just get a big plate of the tromp meat to go, which would be fun for a quesadilla party. read more

Yes, Yes, Yes. A simple mexican place located inside a gas station. honestly what's not to like? well, besides the surrounding area, this place is a gem. we actually had a small dinner, and wanted to stop by this place to bring a burrito home to eat. yes, i'm a fat ass, but i can't say no to mexican food. We ended up getting one trompo burrito and it took about 8-10 mins for them to make it. there are no tables inside, so this place is definitely to go. I suppose you can eat your mexican food outside the gas station, but lets not be ghetto... bring it home to enjoy in the comforts of your own house. Anyways, they package your burrito with small sauces and some onions. These onions and sauce make the burrito taste 10x better. Not to say the burrito was lacking in flavor, but i'm so glad they put it in my to go box without even asking me. they also have a lot of other items on the menu. and honestly the best thing about this spot located inside a gas station, is that you can buy other snacks and or drinks while you wait.... if you're truly a gambling degen, they also have slot machines hidden in the back... but shhhh, you didn't hear that from me. ;) read more

Ive been coming here for years. the food has always been amazing, but lately the customer service has gone down the drain. it's like some of them don't want to even assist you and wouldn't if they didn't have to. I came today and the guy saw me walking to the counter to order, he ignored me and continued to eat. that's not how you treat customers. I was excited to see the 30 five-star reviews of this place, and the taste of the tacos was great. I expect hole-in-the-wall places like this to "look a certain way", because aesthetics aren't what they're going for. Food quality, is. So when I walked into the gas station convenience store that houses Taqueria Charlys, I was a little surprised to see some of the staff cutting onions and tearing lettuce in the open tile area of the convenience store, in front of the open refrigerated area where customers were walking freely to pick up items. I can't find if there is a subparagraph of the Texas Food Safety rules that prohibits this, but I have to say that it threw me off a bit. I've never seen food prepared in the open air and not behind a counter at a restaurant, hole in the wall or not. So, if you don't mind this and want to roll the dice with some tacos that taste great and (thus far) don't seem to be contaminated, feel free to visit Taqueria Charlys. I have to say this will probably be my only visit. read more

Are the best tacos in Texas found in a gas station in Irving? I would love for someone to show me better, because these are slap yo mama, good. All I have had is the trompo. I keep thinking that I will try something else, but why? Fancy places that put micro greens on their carnitas, need to come work with these fellas for a day to see how it is DONE. I generally don't rate gas station food.... However, it was too good not to share! The food: I ordered a beef burrito. It was toasted, and contained beef, lettuce, sour cream, refried beans, carrots and corn. The flavor profile was great. There were grilled onions and peppers on the side, red sauce and green sauce.... I didn't use any of them. The burrito was that good. Usually I find that the beans are just a filler, however the beans complemented the burrito with added flavor. The service, for a walk up stand inside a quick stop, you get what you expect. They were responsive, working constantly, Nice folks. Ambiance, walk up food stand. Not a sit down restaurant. I would recommend calling ahead and you and your friends/coworkers have a delicious meal together. My cost for the burrito was just under $11 including tax. It will be two meals for me. read more

I am excited that I have found this taco shop relatively close to where I work. If you truly like secret food spots that the average person is not going to find, you have to add this spot to your list. That does not mean that it will not be busy, because once you have had their tacos once your will be coming back. Today was my first time and I realized by the time I was done eating that I will be heading back next week. I got two tacos to give them a try. I chose to get a carnitas taco and a barbacoa taco. I took them back to the office, open my container, and tasted the meat by itself. It was amazing! The meat was juicy and flavorful on its own. Once you add the onion and cilantro, drizzle it with a little of their amazing hot sauce and you are in heaven. My only regret is that I did not get a Trompo Taco as well. I finally decided to give this place a try because of the good reviews and very close to home. The first time there had the Taco Plate special (3 tacos of your choice, rice & beans, plus sauces, grilled onions and a pepper). This was a great value for $10. The trompo was really good. As other reviewers mentioned the barbacoa was a bit fatty, but still delicious. I've gone back and only gotten the trompo meat. They also sell 1lb of any meat for approx $11. This comes with the usual sided that accompany tacos as well as tortillas which could make for convenient weeknight meals. Also noticed a sign that said Menudo is available on sat and sun. read more

Don't let the surroundings fool you. This is one of the best places to get tacos. I often call ahead, pick the food up, & eat comfortably in my home. I usually buy 1 pound of trompo meat &/or 1 pound of lengua. It comes with salsas, veggies, & freshly made tortillas. Mmm mmm good! The only downside is that miscommunication is common, but they always fix my order. read more

As sketchy as this place looks on the outside and inside, they serve some good ass trompo! I went with the burrito and it's really one of the better burritos you can get in town. The big burrito is definitely more than enough, and should split it if you have a small stomach. They pack this burrito with primarily meat, yet somehow get additional content like sour cream, lettuce, and rice in the mix. Luckily the veggies arent too distracting but cold lettuce has no business in such a hot meal. The trompo is throbbing with flavor in all its greasy, marinaded glory. Some pieces were a little chewy, but that was like three pieces out of thirty. Dont try to eat this while driving cause it can get a little messy. I take a star off cause a third of the tortilla was a little soggy, which took away from the experience texture wise. Definitely come here for something trompo related. read more

I think we found a new breakfast place before games... Excellent breakfast burritos! Yes - it is in the gas station - as other reviews have said - oh so worth it! Typically, these burritos are filled with egg and some chorizo - not these - they are filled with lots of chorizo and egg. The tortillas are fresh and a little chewy. These are delicious goodness. This place was incredible! Got a recommendation from a friend and could not be happier. I called ahead. My order was ready when I got there it was clean, neat and friendly! I did Trompo meat by the pound and it comes with everything in the picture! 2lbs plus all this for under $25! I felt like I was ripping them off! It is one of the best gas station taquerias around. It is one of the best tacos al pastor around. Straight from the trompos, legit tacos. Can't beat the price and freshness. Stop by for a couple tacos or a quesadilla. Hear their burgers are perfect, too. Mostly "to go" as seating is VERY limited to the bar in front of the grill. I've gotten pounds of their al pastor before, they will pack it up with tortillas, onions and cilantro for you to fill and eat family style. read more

Service was fast and reliable. If you want to feed the family you can definitely come here and grab a few lbs of meats. I can't say anything about the tacos other than them being bland. The meat quality is lacking here but it is cheap to feed hungry mouths on a budget. It's not worth the drive for me. read more

If I could give a ZERO rating I would!! We placed an order 2 days in advance and they were not ready had to wait an additional 40 min! Once the order was given they forgot to give the rice and beans! When we called to get a discount or refund they said the don't give refunds!!! Absolutely horrible customer service all around!! Don't order from this place for large orders because they are NOT dependable and truly do not know how to make their errors correct!! read more

DAMN GOOD!!! Sunday morning errand had me in area and super hungry! Taqueria Charly is hidden inside the Valero and I am soooo glad I took the time to venture in!!! Some of the BEST Trompo tacos I have had in some time!!! Barbacoa was too fatty but once i cleaned it up the meat was delicious!! Their decor is interesting, the drinks are delicious and strong and their menu is almost entirely gluten-free. I have Celiac Disease and this is one of the only local restaurants that I look forward to eating at. They seem to have unfortunately changed up their menu and eliminated the taco plates. They used to have amazing brisket tacos. Now, their food is really expensive and there are no tacos. They seem to have transitioned to a steakhouse menu. We visited on National Margarita Day so they had some drink specials. We sat on the outdoor patio, not realizing that none of the patio heaters had fuel tanks. Service was okay but we did have to go inside a couple of times to ask for stuff since nobody else was outside (pretty empty inside too). Please bring back your tacos!

We ended up getting a trio (beef, chicken, shrimp) fajita 1/2 pound and it was perfect for the 2 of us. You can taste the grilled and charred flavor on the meats. The chicken and shrimp were slightly on the drier side but when combined with the sour cream, beans, guac, cheese, they were perfection. For the two people, the limitation ended up being more the toppings to the fajitas but it was just enough. At about $25 for 2, that was a steal. The queso was about $9. Right before we were about to leave, Kayla recommended the tres leches dessert and you know we had to try it. It was solid. Loved the cream on top. Definitely would come back again!

We were so stuffed that we had enough leftovers to stretch into another meal and a half. Not bad for splitting an order. My only tiny gripe? No fountain sodas.
