Terrible! I went in to purchase five donuts I was transporting to work. I asked for a box and was told I needed to put the items in a bag, not a box. I offered to pay a bit extra for a box because I certainly can't purchase donuts I'm going to share in a bag. She said no, a dollar. For a BOX so I can transport the donuts I paid for?! A legend in the mid valley of Oceanside. Tans has been here for decades and will continue to hold it down in the donut world. Everyone has their favorite donut shop but this one is mine. I've been coming here since I was a kid and now my kid likes to come here. My personal favorite is the jalapeño ham and cheese croissant. I've had them from lots of places and really they are about all the same. That is just one of my favorites regardless of donut shop. The donut holes are good and they have the same donuts as the others. It's hard to judge donut shops, I think they are mostly all consistent with each other. Freshly made every morning, they have a wide variety ranging from the usual Old Fashioned to a Bacon Maple Bar. Their donuts are always delicious, light and fluffy. Never greasy. I can have some a few days later and they'll still taste just as good as the day they were made. A dozen will cost you about $11. CASH ONLY! So make sure to have some on you but they do have an ATM machine in store if needed. Now this isn't the fanciest place. The only Tan's that should come to mind for any Oceansider when you put those 3 letters together. Probably because my skin is the color of a donut anyhow it's the 1st thing that comes to mind when I think of TAN or donuts. Sure there are more mainstream brands like Yum Yum nearby and an eastcoast staple like Dunkin on base, but if you identify the city of Oceanside by terms like "backgate, valley, deep valley, shores, etc" you can only come to 1 donut conclusion. Back when I was young donuts were a part of my regular diet, as was snowboarding and pizza hut, but a few things never changed. I've been coming here for well over a decade, at least as long as I could drive. This mom and pop shop is the epitome. They have not taken notice on the trends like the cronut, the bacon anything. They stick to the classics, but added boba milk tea a few years ago. They do breakfast sandwiches, bagels and a few juices. Not many bagel shops around, heck not even any juice shops nearby and only 1 donut shop in the vicinity so this all in 1 almost gets much of the traffic by default. This place used to be the bomb.com literally owned by the nicest sweetest couple, but they retired and sold the business. I can't necessarily say it's not as good as it once was, but it's lost something. CASH only, but an ATM inside, nominal ATM fee as far as ATM fee's go. Service is good and the staff is friendly, variety is excellent, quality is ok (I mean come on their donuts). It's clean, but in a bit of a run down strip mall. This donut shop holds a special place in my heart, as we used to go here all the time back when I was a little kid. My favorite has always been the "maple bar filled" as I used to call it. :) [section omitted due to Yelp flagging my original review] ...in true old school fashion they are still a cash only joint - no big surprise considering how inexpensive donuts are, but just make sure you have cash BEFORE you go so you don't end up paying $3 extra or something by getting cash at a nearby ATM. Or in my case, before you drive a mile down the road to the Chase drive-thru to get cash and have to wait 20 minutes behind someone who accidentally picked the Spanish language and was dumb enough not to close out their transaction before driving away. SCORE! Haha, you HAD an account balance. suckerrrr So once I finally had cash I drove back to the shop and got my glorious maple bar filled (cue angelic music). My wife likes chocolate old fashioned donuts, as does her mom (who was in town to visit), so I got 2 of those.
