Brandt beef burgers and beef tallow fries; I'm hooked. Tanner's Prime burgers in Oceanside is always a busy spot near the 101 and for good reason. Their staff is always courteous, even on a late night stop like this last one, and their burgers are really top notch. No wonder they've made to the Michelin Guide. Being so close to the coast makes it a little challenging for parking, but they do offer a few spots on their lot. The restaurant is kept clean and there seating options both inside and outdoors. I've tried the Prime double and Prime Dirty double burgers and love the Beef bacon added in. The Beef tallow fries are perfectly crispy and goes well with their special sauce. To drink, I've enjoyed the Tanner's Prime lager. This is definitely a must when you're in Oceanside and I'll keep coming back.

Yum!! The burger was delicious, with such great texture and flavor. I especially enjoyed how crispy the edges were while the center was cooked just right. We also got our dog a prime patty, and it was devoured in less than a minute. Sounds like we'll be back the next time we visit :)
This place... phenomenal. Honestly the smash burgers are insanely good. We love coming here for some big juicy burgers. Their sauce is really good to dip your fries or add to your burger. They even have puppy patties for your pups. This place can definitely get packed, specially on the weekends, but it is worth the wait!
Long overdue review of the best burger spot in North County. When I want a burger, definitely Tanner's. When I'm trying to decide on where to eat, Tanner's is always up for consideration. My go-to is the double burger with no cheese and no sauce. They give you the sauce on the side if you want to put some on, but I find it better without it. Pairing it with one of their refreshing beers (N/A from Best Day Brewing available) and their beef tallow fries is perfection. I'm not a fan of their Fatty Patty, a cookie ice cream sandwich -- it's weirdly too fatty of a mouth feel. I really wish they would sell the cookies by themselves. I had them at a different event, and I've wished for more beef tallow choc chip cookies since. If I liked baking, I'd get a tub of their beef tallow (yup, it's for sale) and make them myself. Hint hint to any bakers out there. And if you've read this far, I'll give up one of my hacks. Skip the line and sit at the bar. You can order full menu from there. Even if there's only one seat, you can sit there with a beer and put in your full party's order. Enjoy!!
Pretty good burgers! Fries were ok. Pretty pricey for the concept (order at counter and they bring it to you. Staff was ok a mix of friendly and just there to do their job didn't show much emotion. Causal ambiance had an OK Time finding a seat.
Ordered the 2/3 Double Prime Burger salad style to cut out some calories... hahaha. This thing was HUGE! Definitely a heavy meal, but so worth it. The beef was super juicy and flavorful, and everything was loaded with toppings and sauce. Honestly, I didn't even miss the bun! Definitely a fork-and-knife kind of burger, unless you're ready to get messy and just grab it with your hands. The tallow fries were just as good! Super crispy, light, and not overly greasy. They paired perfectly with the burger, and I could easily eat a whole order on their own. Overall, everything was delicious and super filling. Definitely coming back!
When you are leaving Legoland and need a good burger, this is the spot. One of the better smash burgers I've ever had. My son really enjoyed their wagyu hot dog. The tallow cooked fries are delicious especially with the cheddar sauce.
This was my second time at Tanner's Prime Burgers, and I was just as excited to come back after how much I enjoyed it the first time. Parking can be a little tricky since the lot is small and usually pretty full, so you either have to get lucky or street park farther down and walk over. The line can get long too, but this time we waited about 30 to 40 minutes total from getting in line to receiving our food, which felt pretty reasonable considering how busy they were. The staff was also friendly and welcoming throughout. On our first visit, we got the Tanner Prime Burger with a single patty and left wishing we had tried the double. This time we finally did, and it completely changed the experience. They definitely don't skimp on the meat, and the double patty makes the burger significantly heavier and much more filling. I still enjoyed it, but personally, I actually preferred the balance of the single patty and will probably go back to that next time. The Tallow Fries were also great, with a really flavorful, crispy texture. I may have gotten a little ahead of myself with the double patty this time, but Tanner's is still a spot I really enjoy and look forward to coming back to.
Not bad not great. The line was long for lunch 130pm. The food presentation looked great. First bite was great. Then put on the burger sauce and hot sauce. Good. Towards end of it, both my brother and I felt although burger meat is Prime and clean, the aftertaste wasnt spectacular, and we were not sure if it was the burger or the sauces or the plain house beer Tanner lager (which is self proclaimed "clean" taste whatever that means but was not anything special). We full but not crazy about it. Before leaving I bought fountain drinks and was impressed with the house sweet tea (honey and minty taste) and the lemonade. I preferred the lemonade, while my bro favored the sweet tea.
This spot did not disappoint. Got the Dirty Double and some fries. Fries were super crispy. Lots of foot traffic and it can get loud, but it's a great spot to grab a bite and hang out. Service is super fast. They even have some outdoor seating

That is insanely high praise from Californians when In-N-Out is our burger poster child. I'd have to say that I agree with them. There's almost always a line, but it's worth it! We got the Tanner's Prime Burger along with some Tallow Fries. They bring everything you'd ever need in a tray right out to you- napkins, hot sauce, and Tanner's sauce all in tow. The burger is wow. It's a holy grail lineup featuring a brioche bun, juicy patty smashed with bacon, American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, caramelized AND raw onions, and a Cascabella pepper. You just have to try it for yourself. It's so indulgent, decadent, and everything you'd dream a burger to be. Their Tallow Fries are salted to perfection and are a NEED to accompany the burgers.
The devil is in the details right? You can have great ingredients but to make a burger truly tasty it's how you bring it all together. Tanner's does an excellent job executing the smash burger. One of the best I've had! The patty was well seasoned and nice crispy texture. The bacon adds smokiness. The brioche bun is soft and light. It does not dominate the bite like so many bad burgers. And the tallow fries??? Pure ! The fries reminded me of the original MacDonalds fries cooked in beef tallow. But way better execution. Crispy and cooked just enough. The size was perfect. And the salt the used amped the flavor. Super good!!! Overall the food is 5 stars. The overall setting is perfect for burgers. Everything is open air so the place stays cool on a hot day. Lots of seating. Service was efficient. In this place moving quickly and turning tables is a must to keep the line moving. Overall 4 stars for setting. I must warn you there are lines. You will wait. And when it is sunny it gets brutal right before you enter the ordering area. There are umbrellas so use one if you don't want to get burnt. And the parking is good if you ride your bike. But there are places to park in the neighborhood. I will be back. The burger and fries are too good not to!!! PS Try their house lager . Just a great example of the brew and perfect for hot days.

When I try a new restaurant, I ask two questions: what is this place trying to do, and does it deliver? Tanner's Prime is a smash burger spot from a Michelin-starred chef, so the answer should be obvious. Except I ordered a hot dog. From a burger place. In my defense -- it was good! But the burger was hands down better: crispy-edged smash patties, melty cheese, peppers with a little bite, on a bun that somehow stays soft under all that. The hot dog is a fine supporting actor. The burger is the star. Now, the friction. Online ordering was shut down on a weekend night -- they get slammed, I get it -- so I ordered in person and waited. Twice. Fine. What wasn't fine: I got home and the loaded fries were missing from the order. Three different employees touched that bag, and yes, I know I should check my order -- but I also think it's fair to expect the restaurant to check it first. I went back the next day, and to their credit, the manager refunded the fries and the tip. That's above and beyond, and honestly the reason this isn't a harsher review. So: great food, a service stumble, and a manager who earned back some goodwill. If/when I return -- yes, I'm checking the bag. read more

i love tanners! their burgers are so filling and flavorful. i like how they provide sauces that you can use as much as you want. you can ask for chopped chillies as an add on and the edges of the burger are so crispy while having a good bite on the center! the fries are so crispy and fried in tallow. it's topped with onions, sauce, cheese and a patty! every item has a chili on it. the milkshake was tasty and had a nice and subtle chocolate flavor without being too sweet or overwhelming to drink! they do have a parking lot but other wise there is street parking. there's plenty of seating, just be patient if it's too busy! it's worth the wait. read more

Solid smash burgers, but TikTok definitely blew this spot up. We waited about 45 minutes just to order, so be ready for a crowd. The burgers are well made. The Tanner's Prime Burger comes properly stacked with the Brandt beef smashed with cowboy beef bacon, caramelized onions, New School American cheese, lettuce, tomato, raw sweet onions, and a cascabella pepper on brioche. The Prime Dirty Double leans heavier on the cheese, pickles, and sauce for that classic greasy smash hit. Dirty Tallow Fries: Huge plus that they fry in beef tallow instead of standard vegetable oil-the Russet potato fries were crispy and rich without tasting greasy, especially loaded with the extra prime beef, beef bacon, cheese, and garlic aioli. Good quality all around, but tough to fully justify a 45-minute line for what is ultimately typical smash burger fare. 4/5. read more

Worth the wait!! Line was long but service was fast and friendly. Waited for approximately 30 mins to order but got our food promptly. Tables come and go. The burgers are delicious! The burger sauce on top compliments the taste of the burger so well. The fries were honestly just fries - nothing special. I will be coming back to try other items on the menu! read more
Stopped by Tanner's on my way back to San Diego from an LA trip! There's very limited parking there so I had to park on the street. I arrived on Friday around 12 pm and was 2nd in line but by 1230 pm there were several people in line so definitely recommend going at 12 pm or earlier! I got the tanner's prime burger and the dirty tallow fries. The burger was really juicy and delicious and perfectly smashed!!! The tallow fries were good and reminded me of the animal style fries from In n Out but it did seem a bit odd that that there was a beef patty plopped on top of the fries. Will definitely be back the next time Im in town! read more
Burger was quite hefty and filling, even as a single. Definitely worth while to get a double next time. The tallow fries were rich and perfectly salted. The burger is brought to our table with their burger sauce and hot sauce. Would come back! I love the open outdoor concept of the patio area that opens toward the lot. Made the 30 minute trek to Oceanside bc of the raving reviews but sadly still doesn't beat In-n-out for me. The tallow fries are not greasy which is good. Got the 1/3 single burger and it's bland. The buns are a bit too thick for the proportion to the patty. It was also falling apart and easily can get messy. It's good but not great. Perhaps my high expectations made me bias but it's too pricey for an inferior burger and fries to In_n-out. This is a one and done for us. read more

It was a beautiful, warm, blue-sky California Saturday, and the perfect opportunity to take a drive on a winding road with the top down. After some thought, I decided to drive to Oceanside and reward myself with a burger from Tanner's Prime Burgers, having previously been delighted by the quality of their food. The drive was exhilarating, as I sped down I76 with John Coltrane blasting from the Bose sound system and the wind in my face, knowing that my treat awaited at the end of my drive. I arrived and, to my surprise, a parking space was available in the parking lot, and I quickly parked. The service line is quite long, but to my delight, the World Cup match between England and Norway was on every monitor in the joint, and the sound was on! Truly amazing! Placed my order for a double Tanner's Prime Burger (100% USDA PRIME All-Natural Brandt Beef® smashed with Cowboy BEEF Bacon, Caramelized Onions, and minus the New School American Cheese on a Brioche Bun with Tanner's Sauce, Crisp Lettuce, Thinly Sliced Sweet Onions, Juicy Tomato, and a Cascabella Pepper), a single Tanner's Prime Burger, two Tallow Fries (Russet Potato crispy fried in All-Natural Beef Fat seasoned with Sea Salt and Black Pepper), a Ketch Brewing, Hazy Conditions IPA, and a Tanner's Prime Lager. Spent the next two hours enjoying a great meal and watching the World Cup match with a group of great people enjoying the experience on a perfect day under the sun. The burgers and fries were as delicious as I recall, and the crispy edges of the smashed beef patties elevate their burger to a different level. Truly the treasure desired at the end of a long drive. We came on a Saturday during peak hours (5:30) and the line was pretty long. There's only 4-5 things on the menu so we both got the double cheeseburger with their tallow fries. The patty itself was super thick and really salty. The bun was a soft brioche bun and that helped with the saltiness. The burgers were super greasy and dripped a lot so I recommend keeping the wrapper on. Their ranch was amazing though and paired well with their tallow. Would I come back? No. Do I think it's worth a wait? Also no. It just tastes like a normal burger to me that lacked flavor. read more

Tanner's Prime Burger brings smashburger goodness to a revitalized area in Oceanside. Tanner's has been on my list for a while as it's always brought up in conversations on who has a good smashburger. After trying it for the first time it has definitely lived up to expectations. Tanner's has a simple menu of 2 types of burgers, a salad, a hot dog and fries. The star of the show is the Tanner's Prime Dirty Double consisting of a 2/3 lb USDA PRIME All-Natural Brandt Beef smashed to perfection with crispy edges. Served with a beef bacon, caramelized onions, juicy pickles, and double cheese on a Brioche Bun with Tanner's Sauce. What I really liked about the burger was the thin crispy edges with an almost beef jerky like texture but as you keep eating the patty thickness comes through and yes the beef using USDA prime provides a robust taste. This burger left me fully satisfied and full. The other notable that is a must pair with is the Tallow Fries consisting of a russet potato fried in beef fat - great flavorful that went well with the burger and tasted great with the burger sauce and ketchup. Tanner's Prime Burgers is a definite must try for any burger lover as they offer one of the tastiest smash burger experiences in the North County. Be prepared to for a line as this place gets packed at peak lunch times. There is a small lot on site but street parking is available in the neighborhood. read more
Alright Yelp I'll give you the skinny on Tanner's Prime Burger. First off this is a smash burger place that holds a Michelin star. This place is like the In & Out of smash burgers. They are simply offer burgers, shakes and fries. I would think if this place as a more fancier version of In & Out. Does this place deserve a Michelin star for their burgers?..... in my humble opinion yes! I would say this is the best smash burger I've had. My second favorite place would be Amboy Burgers in LA. I had the double smash with no beacon. Every ingredient hit the spot, the bun has a nice buttery taste, meat well seasoned and even the secret sauce is special. I imagine every ingredient was carefully critiqued before butting together this award winning burger. Lastly, I came on a Sunday line out the door probably 30 minutes in line and another 30 to get my burger. I would say I would try to avoid the crowd next time, but either way it's still worth the wait. read more
nice casual burger joint located in downtown Carlsbad that's good for watching sports! Lots of indoor & outdoor seating as well as TV's!! Tanners prime double burger (8/10): $15.95...expensive. Very generous portion size although the meat was a tad bit dry & I wouldn't say it had a unique flavor. Loved the onions on it though!! Tanners prime dirty double (7.5/10): a little sour & spicy due to the pickles and cascabella pepper. Juicy & lots of flavor, just not my fav! Tallow fries (6/10): not as fresh & crispy as I'd hoped but still ate em all LOL. Would consider going back if I was in the area. read more

Tanners smash burgers are quite exceptional. If you are looking for a smash burger with a nice crisp edge mixed with fat and salt, look no further. Tallow fries are crispy and salty with a hint of tallow. The hot dog is fine but rhe burger and fries are the big winners. The line is worth it. I would and will return every time I am in the area. read more
5/11/2026 Got there early on a Monday before noon. Only one family and one other person dining there. It was not busy, yet. But after 12:00pm, lines started forming quickly! TANNER'S PRIME BURGER Got it as a double. Burger is a good size and it was very filling! For one person, it is a lot! Better come hungry because it is hard to eat the whole burger when you ate already. Maybe for guys it might be different though. The smashed patties were very juicy and dripping with beef fat! The crisp lettuce, sliced sweet onions and tomatoes helped keep the burger from being too heavy. They also give you a small Cascabella Pepper too. They serve your burger with their bottle of sauces brought together on the side. I liked their hot sauce which tasted like Frank's RedHot. Their main burger sauce was the typical burger sauce you get, kind of reminded you of McD sauce and In N Out sauce without the pickle juice tang. Ordered the Tanner's Prime Burger as a single burger for my mom, but did not try the single burger. But everything looked good! For those who only want more meat and cheese flavor in their burger, order Tanner's Prime Dirty Double. KIDS PRIME SLIDER Got this for my mom, but she did not like it after a bite of it, so I ate most of it. It is a simple slider with a single patty with American cheese on a brioche bun. There's also their own sauce called Tanner Sauce. It is a slider, so it is smaller than Tanner's Prime Burger, but the smashed patty was bigger than the brioche bun, so it was quite filling! Since it was grilled in tallow fat, you can taste it too and it can feel heavy after a few bites. Personally, I wouldn't recommend this. Tanner's Prime Burger is much better with the crisp lettuce, onions and tomatoes to cut the tallow fat. Love that they offer salad too, Tanner's Prime Burger Salad, everything minus the bun. TALLOW FRIES This was crispy and nicely salted. Slightly more saltier than I'd like though. It was good, but wished it was cut thinner, like McD fries. Overall it was good and I ate it with their hot sauce. After eating all this, your hands will smell like tallow. So wash your hands more than once! Wanted to get their beef tallow vanilla ice cream sandwich called Tanner's Fatty Patty, but sadly they did not have any that day. CUSTOMER SERVICE The whole staff was friendly and smiling. Good service overall. SEATS Plenty of seats indoors and outdoors! Sat in the booth and it was very comfy! Two unisex bathrooms available. PARKING It is a small parking lot, but there is street parking too. Overall, I had a good experience, but I will admit that the patties cooked in beef tallow is quite new to my palate. Okay OMG, Tanner's got to be the BEST burger place I've ever been to. There's a good reason for the lines despite the parking situation. It's worth it! The staff are pros at handling the busyness at the same time smashin' it with excellent customer service. Luv the super chill vibes!! Tanners got me hooked on their 100% USDA Prime Beef. Drove out to visit Oceanside and had to stop here! I've seen this place all over socials and had to try it out. Tanner's is definitely an experience! The smash burger was cooked to perfection. Every bite just melts in your mouth and you know you're getting a great quality burger because they come out piping hot! The line was a bit long but it moves quickly, what seemed like over an hour wait was just about 20/30 mins! It is a very casual little spot! I recommend if you're in the area! Don't forget to grab a chocolate shake it was super rich and flavorful! read more

This is supposed to be the loaded fries at Tanners Burger, but this is what I got at the Frontwave Arena last night. Tanners, for $16.99, you can do better. This won't make me and my family come visit your restaurant. read more

Came on a Sunday evening and there was a line. It does move fast and took about 12-20 min of constant shuffling along. Once you order at the counter, it's self seating and self bussing. Burgers were an absolutely smash for both the regular as well as the dirty. Dirty tallow fries were alright... I think I'll try them normal next time and skip all the toppings on it making it really heavy and soggy. read more

When you walk in, the bartender greets you and also takes your order--a really interesting concept. I can see the line getting long, since it's a popular spot. I ordered the Old Dirty with a side of fries and house-made lemonade. At first, the lemonade tasted a little different, but then I realized it was sweetened with honey, which was a lovely surprise. The fries were top-notch; they were seasoned so perfectly that I didn't even need ketchup. You can tell they're cooked in quality beef tallow. The cheeseburger had a nice flavor, too. My only small complaint is that it comes on a little tray, which makes it tricky to take apart the burger and rearrange the toppings. I had to use napkins to put everything back in place because the ingredients kept slipping out the bottom. I'll definitely be back to try the milkshakes and more burgers. read more

These burgers are touted as one of the best burgers in San Diego. Decided to check it out because of this and to see if the line (that wrapped around the location into the parking lot) was worth it. Came here on a Sunday and it was packed. Please be prepared as from the moment we got in line up until we got our food was 50 minutes. So if you're here for a quick bite during rush hour may not be the best move. When it isn't packed they apparently do take out orders. Highly recommend but please note that they turn them off during the rush. This place touts beef tallow and their specialty cheese and you can tell for both. All in all they care about the oldie but goodie flat top burgers which were absolutely solid. The bacon was crispy. It was flavorful. Solid all around. My only bummer was that it was a tad greasy but it could be because of the rush. All I need to say is that the moment I took a bite I thought "yep. One of my top burgers I've had in SD." Their fries were fantastic. Next time will get some with cheese on it as the cheese they use is ooey gooey. The fries were a middle between shoestring and regular. Their tallow dip and their tanners sauce were real showstoppers. I could be buried in the tanner sauce when I die and be happy. Think a sweeter less onion-y version of in n outs animal style sauce. Topped it off with the ice cream sandwich and their milkshake. Chocolate lovers rejoice for the milkshake! Rich chocolate. It hits you in the face in a good way. The ice cream sandwich cookies were homemade tasting and the ice cream was yet again beef tallow. Just when you think beef tallow can't make anything else better you think well damn I guess I like beef tallow ice cream now. I recommend both. Special shout out to LA (our server and the bartender). She was lovely and went out of her way to help us. Everyone did so the service was fantastic. There are tables inside but also bar seating and outdoor seating. This place is both a restaurant and a bar and a place to watch a game. Unlike most burger joints they have coffee, their own beer, their own lemonade, cocktails, sauces etc. I mean damn you can buy their beef tallow. I'd be lying if I said I didn't think about it mid bite. There's a small lot but plenty of street walking. Also it's conveniently located right off the 78 and the 5 interchange. All in all was it one of the best burgers in SD? Yes. But would I drive past the line if it was over 30 minutes? Probs yes. read more

They have beer, wine, and hard seltzers. There's also a drink called the "Tanner's Sunrise" which is pretty much a mimosa.
Could you remove the halal friendly tag as that is misleading, if the beef isn't halal if possible?
Hello! I have looked into this and do not see a Halal tag on our account, as we are not Halal. I have spoken with Yelp support and they are unable to see a Halal tag, either. To clarify, we use 100% USDA Prime grade beef but we are not Halal.

I don't believe they take reservations but I believe it is walk up only and plenty of seating.
Are there any chicken/ fish or meatless options?
You could potentially get the salad and ask for no burger or bacon. Other than that option everything touches beef (meat or fat) that I see in their menu from hot dogs to burgers to fries to ice cream.
Do you have pickles?
The burgers has pickles in them, not sure if they sell them on the side.
Does Tanners use Peanut oil for any of the frying? There isn't a phone number to call to verify for an allergy... I assume it it all Tallow, but need to verify please
