Farm to Smash specializes in smash burgers and fries, and everything is made with a focus on quality. They cook in beef tallow instead of seed oils, use avocado-based mayo and spreads, serve fresh ground beef (we literally saw them grinding it), and even bake their buns fresh. It is definitely on the pricier side, but you can honestly taste the difference in quality. It is a small storefront with a few barstools inside, plus a patio area in the parking lot that is sectioned off with benches, so there is some seating available but it is still very casual. Now to the best part, the food! We started with drinks and got organic agave lemonade, one plain and one strawberry. Both were super refreshing and really good, though we probably should have asked for ice. For food, we ordered two double smash burgers: the Flamin Smash with fresh jalapeños, all-natural American cheese, pickles, and chipotle spread, and the Rodeo with bacon, all-natural American cheese, pickles, and original spread. Both were incredible. The burgers were perfectly cooked smash burgers with that great crispy edge, and the meat tasted extremely fresh with everything cooked just right. The lady at the front was also extremely friendly and kind, and she recommended the double patties as the way to go. Honestly we would have still been very happy and satisfied with a single patty. We also got a small fry and a small loaded fry. The fries are made from fresh potatoes, cut in house daily, and fried in beef tallow, which made them crispy and flavorful. The loaded fries came topped with all-natural American cheese, bacon, grilled onions, and we chose the original spread, and they were just as good as the burgers. The pickles were also amazing, super crisp and flavorful, and we honestly went back to ask for more. I am assuming they are made in house because they stood out that much. First, let me say that I love the place. The first time we went the owners were there and their passion and focus on healthy food was really apparent. The were engaging and the food was great. We went back last night and they were not there. It was a very different experience. The cooks were loud and "horsing around". I didn't expect much from it, but actually, it was the favorite. The chipotle burger was good, but the garlic aïoli was very strong raw garlic flavor which if you're not a fan of you may not like. Overall, the burger was great, but without the extra garlic aïoli sauce that I got on the side, it would've been pretty dry honestly. As time has gone on, I feel like there consistency is hit or miss. Giving them 3 stars feels harsh so I will leave it at 4. Out of 10 I would say they are a 7/10. Farm to Smash is very good. Of all the burger spots I've been to around San Diego, it ranks pretty high. And while my own experience here didn't match the heights of some other reviewers I've seen, I do want to come back and eat again, try their other offerings and see if any minor issues I had were one offs. I had The Rodeo, their version of a bacon cheeseburger. The patty itself was flavorful, well seasoned, but I did not get as much crispiness as I had expected from the smash. It was still juicy and good, just missing the chewy edges to the meat. And while the bacon and pickles gave it a great amount of heft, the sauce heightening the flavor with a good amount of sweet and a bit of tang, I felt that overall, it needed a bit more to put it over the top. A very good burger, just not brilliant. My son had the Flamin' Smash, which he was able to polish off about half of before the heat became too much. Talking as someone who can handle a good amount of heat, it was very tolerable, but even I could feel it by the end as I finished it. Still, my primary issue with this burger were the jalapeño; cut and served raw, they were a bit bitter. I think they would have been better if they were either pickled or fried. He also had a Chocolate Shake, which I'm sure he wished he had saved more of before his burger hit the table. And between us, we split a small serving of the Loaded Fries. The fries themselves were delicious, crispy and salty, with a great underlying flavor from the tallow. However, they were absolutely drenched in the Original Sauce we ordered them in. Where it should have been a healthy drizzle on top, it was instead a goopy puddle that completely dominated every bite of our side. And it was a bit overpowering. Again, Farm to Smash is very good. They've got great flavors, seem to have a nice range of ingredients, and have a good technique to their cooking. I'm just personally not a huge fan of the combinations I've tried. If and when I come back out here, I would think/suggest that one should order a plain cheeseburger with a side of their sauce to appreciate their beef and cooking. What sets Farm to Smash apart from other burger places is their seed oil free promise, house-made avocado oil, and premium blend of chuck roll and brisket ground daily in the kitchen.
