I've come here a couple times, and as much as the hairstylists are good for the most part, I was quite disappointed in my experience today. I called to reschedule an appointment for next week, since life happens and I couldn't go the day of for the appointment. So I call the receptionist, and she rescheduled me for the following week, same day and everything. I then get a call back HOURS LATER from what I am assuming a different receptionist by I believe the name of Laura/Lauren? Something along those lines. And they wanted to charge me a late fee, something I had not had to deal with in the past (and I've rescheduled in the past). You would think they would train staff better and for the area itself. I felt like it was a rip off and frankly a scam. I canceled my appointment all together. I won't be coming back. That was really unprofessional and unnecessary. My advice is to go elsewhere. There are far better places anyway, with far less attitude and more professionalism. read more

I've been looking for a salon to stay loyal to. It's hard for me to commit to a specific place because I look for many things in a salon. By far, Tangles has met all my expectations. So I'm definitely coming back! I met Stephanie, one of the stylists, at my workplace. We talked about hair and I told her I was looking to cut my hair soon. I cut my hair about every year or 1 1/2 years because I grow it out to donate. She suggested that I come visit Tangles. She gave me her business card, but I misplaced it. So I looked Tangles up on Yelp and set up an appointment. I called Tangles and the receptionist set me up with an appointment with Lynn, on Saturday, 1/21/17. I usually do a normal bob just above my shoulders, but this time I got the courage to try an A-line long bob! Unfortunately I was pretty vague with Lynn. I just told her to cut my hair as she pleased, just as long as I can put it in a ponytail. And she did just that! My cut is amazing! I also informed her that I wanted to put highlights in my hair. Something that would give my hair some dimension, and as long as the color did not damage my hair. Definitely no bleach! I didn't have a preference in color. She chose out a nice light brown, and assured me that the color only uses natural oils. Therefore it wouldn't damage my hair. (Don't worry, I intend on cutting away the color before donating the next time around) I love the way Lynn cut and colored my hair. I was very vague on how I wanted my hair, but she has made me fall in love with my new bob! I'm glad I had the courage to try it. Another great thing about Tangles is, if you're donating the cut is free! So I just paid for my other services which was just my color. Its amazing how Tangles offers the cut to be free if you're donating your hair. I'm glad that they care and support what I do! Nicest people in the world. I went to see Sarah for a l'oreal profiber treatment weeks ago (my hair is super damaged) and the salon greeted my promptly, got me gowned and seated right away, with a cup of coffee in my hand. It was so refreshing when so many salons are always running late or don't have the whole greeting thing together. Finally! Curly hair specialists on the East Side/SGV. These guys do DevaCurl (Devachan style, of the "Curly Girl" handbook) - cutting it dry, then conditioning, then "plopping" it before air drying. I had had some dry cuts before but never done the full deal, and I was pretty sure that was what I needed for my mixed hair (type 3a curls). Tonya was terrific - warm yet professional, checking in about my usual hair care routine while giving me tips. I'm changing jobs so told her I wanted a look that was super-professional without straightening or having to put it up. (My pet peeve: The style gurus that straighten everyone's hair as an essential first step to looking professional and polished. Well intentioned for fashion perhaps, but ultimately kinda racist, no?) And then she rocked it! Afterward I went to see a friend who's a blurter. She said, "OMG, you look fantastic - like you just stepped off the corporate jet!" Yay Tonya. Details: Everyone was very nice - no waiting, felt pampered, handed from person to person like clockwork. Plenty of mags & people looking after me. Two hours exactly, arrival to departure. Parking sucks, but that's Old Town. A note on the Deva products: When Tonya finished with me, my hair was still kind of crunchy and wet looking. Oh no, it's like a Jheri curl! Tonya assured me that it would soften up in a little while. She was right! A half hour later I couldn't believe how shiny and soft and frizz-free it was, bouncy curls all over - the texture I was used to, but better! Isabel has been my stylist for a couple of years now, and she is fantastic. I can only speak about Isabel and not about the other stylists, but when I come in, she sits me down to talk about my hair and what I liked about it from last haircut, what I didn't like about it, and about styling for my new haircut. This "conference" is conducted away from her station, in a separate area near the shampoo stations. My haircut always comes out nice with her. I've gotten a lot of compliments about the styles I've chosen over the years. Isabel always helps me pick out products that she thinks would work well with my hair. Something else to mention is that I really appreciate is the opportunity to come in for short "tune up" appointments in between haircuts. These short appointments make sure that my hair continues to look fresh and well maintained. These are complimentary. About the salon itself - This is not a trendy salon or even one that tries to be trendy, which is one of the reasons why I like it. Getting a haircut here is a fun experience (who would have thought that would come from a guy?) Everyone at this salon is extremely friendly, and always smiles with a hello. They make you feel welcome as if you were in someone's private home. The receptionist always greets you in a friendly way when you walk in the door and offers you something to drink. Everyone here is very professional and has a great positive, laid back attitude, and again, not trendy or snobby at all. Parking is mostly on the street in front of the salon since it's Old Town (or in a parking structure). The receptionist is always ready to give you some change to put in the meter, and if are in being worked on and realize you didn't put enough change in the meter, they are more than happy to put change in it for you. So I came here to get a brazilian blowout since i had purchased a groupon..the lady was very nice and I got it all done in about an hour and a half with a nice shampooing. It looked really nice when I came out and they even sold me on the acai shampoo and conditioner..which I don't really know if its necessary or not.. :/ Well anyways the point of a b.b. is that you blowdry your hair after you wash it and its supposed to un-frizz your hair and its also 'healthier' because there aren't chemicals. I have no idea if any of it was true, but it's cheaper than other straightening treatments so I decided to give it a try. I definitely wouldn't recommend it considering its still puffy and big, not as bad as before but if you're gonna spend over a hundred bones, you might as well go for the complete straightening treatments for smooth silky flat straight hair! read more

I can love my hair again! I'm very low maintenance, especially with my hair. I hate having it down because it always blows in my face or gets in my way when I'm trying to snack (it was definitely time for a haircut). I found this place on Groupon ($50 got me a haircut and a deep conditioning treatment). Super! I didn't have to hurt my wallet trying out a new place. I met with Isabel who took wonderful care of me! We got into talking about our dogs and after a wash and snips here and there, my hair was voluminous and wavy. I even walked down Colorado Blvd and got a few compliments running some errands. I passed up on the deep conditioning (I've been reading ingredient labels on everything and I'm really careful when it comes to toxins) and opted for a blow-dry for my next visit. Isabel doesn't normally take substitutes for her already amazing Groupon offer, but she did when I told her how hesitant I was when it came to chemicals anywhere near me. Fast forward a month later, I came in for a blow-dry prior to an event I was hosting. I was dressing as Kate Middleton and needed some good waves that would last me the night. Of course, she wows me again with a great look. But what really makes the difference is her educating me on how to do all of this myself at home. I took her advice on how to use velcro curlers immediately the next day as not to lose the bounce and volume I had from my visit with her. And my hair never looked so great! I went to this Salon today for the 1st time since I had a Groupon for Blow Dry Special. This salon is located on Green St, arking is available at meters or 90 minutes comlimentary parking at Delacey Public parking garage, $2 for every 30 minutes thereafter. I got to the salon 15 minutes before my appointment but I was welcomed by lady at Front desk who kindly offered me choice of beverage (tea, water, coffee) while waiting for my stylist. Unfortunately I was assisted by my Stylist Danielle 20 minutes past my Appointment time as she was still finishing up with customer ahead of me. Danielle was friendly, pleasant and made my hair look beautiful. Salon has modern, clean look, only area that needs improvement is to assist customers at scheduled appointment time, that's the whole idea of making an appointment. Aside from that, conveniently located, very clean, and I almost forgot they even check with you to see if you parked at meters and if necessary for you to give them some change so that they can feed meter while preventing you from getting a ticket;) read more

I have always had a love/hate relationship with my hair...and most of the time it was hate all the way. My hair is fine and straight...parts of it grow down like normal...but some parts grow up, yeah like straight up...and then there are the spots where it grows sideways...and then there is the small and inexplicable bald spot. All of this coupled with the deep emotional scars caused by a really bad haircut in 4th grade and well, I have hair issues. There is only one person on this planet who can tame my troubled tresses and the is Michelle B. at Tangles. Michelle is not only a talented hair stylist but she is also a sweet and patient person. I am that nightmare client who shows up with long blonde hair and wants it dyed a deep red...and then a month later wants it blonde again...and then pink...and then purple...and then blonde again...and then wants it all cut off...and then wants to grow it out...you get the picture. Anyway, Michelle has taken me through all colors and lengths and I have always been very happy with the results. As for the salon...I love it!!! Everyone is so friendly!!! I am always greeted by name, and immediately offered a beverage. They will also feed your meter for you if you are parked on Green Street. I've been floating around to different places in Pasadena in search of someone who can cut curly hair, and after looking at some pictures online as well as the reviews, I recently decided to try Tangles. I'm so glad I did. I recently had my hair cut by Danielle, and I haven't had a short haircut that looked so good in quite some time! With curly hair, it's hard to find someone who can keep your hair from turning into a triangle when you cut it short, but the Deva Cut that I had done was fantastic. My hair looked good after the cut, which is extremely rare as my curls prefer to freak out over hair cuts. Danielle is also fantastic. She listened to what I wanted to do with my hair and then made my hair look good. Since my hair cut, I've gone through an entire cycle with this hair. Even on washing days, which are the days when my hair tends to frizz the most, my hair has looked good. A good cut really does make a difference. Sad to say but was VERY disappointed with my last cut at Tangles Salon 2 mos ago. Its taken me this long to write the review because I felt ashamed and disappointed that I let this happen and that I have been in shock since losing ALL my locks. Unreal! I went in with long curly hair and walked out with short curly hair up to my ears! I had been to the salon with my Mom 3 or 4 years ago and I trusted the stylist to come back for a great cut! I was specific in what I wanted and even had a picture to show the stylist. She looked at it and just started cutting. We were talking and I didn't notice how short it was because with a Deva Curl stylist, the hair is cut dry, always. It wasnt until she WASHED MY HAIR! :( After the wash she flipped it over and no more long locks!!!! The picture and my cut looked NOTHING alike. I wanted to cry but I was in shock! But I realized then and to calm myself down, that hair grows back. Luckily for me, summer was coming AND I have thick curly hair that usually grows back quickly. The next day, (Mother's Day) I straightened my hair to take a look at the cut and the layers - A mess!! Still in shock - On top of it being Mother's Day, I lost my mom almost three years ago and made it harder to get through the day. Now that its growing out, the layers are completely off, too short on top and too heavy on bottom. With having a pretty round and full face, short hair doesn't look good on a curvy girl like me. Too ease the pain and find some confirmation to what I could clearly see, I went to the actual Deva Curl DevaChan salon in L.A. for a consult and explained my awful experience. Everything I noted on my own the Deva stylist pointed out just the same and said I was definitely on point with the inconsistencies of the cut! :( The last time I had a bad hair cut was when I was 10 yrs old (Not at Tangles Salon) and my long hair (to my butt) was cut to a short bob and wasn't what my mother asked the stylist to do. My Mom was so upset she cried! You'd think my first reaction would be to cry but again, I was in shock for days. Unfortunately, I will NEVER be going back to Tangles Salon. Beware and ask questions! Even if you know and trust the stylist. Be certain YOU as a client and the stylist are on the same page and communicating the look that's right for you. I DO NOT RECOMMEND natural Curly Hair girls to this Deva Curl stylist. What I would like to see is that the stylist go back and/or keep up with Deva Curl cuts for all curly hair types. Not all curly hair is the same and not all styles and cuts are for every Curly haired girl. So DISAPPOINTED with Tangles Salon :( read more

It completely depends who you get in this salon. Danielle is amazing, Sabrina was pretty good, and Lilit gave me SUCH an AWFUL cut!!!! I gave really clear instructions, which is necessary when you have someone new. Even as she was going through, and it was starting to look awful, I asked again to make sure everything was clear. I could literally see her cut in front of my face and I would say, that's not looking right. She just kept cutting shorter trying to fix it, so I ended up with much shorter hair than I wanted (I had specified about the length initially!) The receptionist (very sweet) could tell I was upset. She called about a week later to see if it was better (it was not.) The owner of the salon offered to fix it for free. That's pretty great customer service. She did what she could but it still looks awful. Btw, it's 2 months later now and it is still awful. Can't wait til my next cut with someone else. Some nice things: -friendly staff and receptionist -NONE of that terrible haughty, we're-too-good-for-you attitude that you often find in fancy salons -Dani is totally down to earth and fun to talk too -So easy and such a comfortable atmosphere. Had to find a new salon when we moved to Pasadena and since I have typically done the "wheel of hair cutters" at Supercuts in the past (you get whomever cuts hair the fastest with a wide range of outcomes), had no compunction picking the salon closest to where I now lived which happened to be Tangles. I was assigned Bri, and when she asked how short I wanted my hair I blurted out a vague memory of the level of the blades at my last cut, "2 on the side and 4 on the top" I think I said...after she had been cutting for a few minutes and remarking over and over again that my hair "sure grew fast" I realized I had given the wrong settings...I looked like she was preparing me for marine bootcamp.....lesson learned...the next time we nailed it. Let me put it this way: I live in New York City, and my hair salon is Tangles in Pasadena. I have been going to Kathy since 2008. I have dark blond hair and do highlights. She is the best colorist I have seen - when I get my hair colored by Kathy, you can't tell the "line" where the last color job was done. She's able to do any style or color, which is great. She understands my kind of hair (fine and brittle) and makes it look great. I pay less than half what I would in New York for a similar quality haircut/color. Tangles is an amazing place. My mom and sister also are regulars there, and we all have different types of hair. I hear that the other stylists there are great too. Hooray for Tangles! read more

I really love this salon. I've been going for about 2 years now, after my stylist moved here from another salon. I'm always greeted immediately and made to feel welcome. The salon is lovely, nicely decorated, and is kept up very well. Also, the owner is really supportive of training and updating techniques for the stylists, which I love. Parking is sometimes an issue, as it is an any Old Town business, but when I park at a meter, the front desk staff are always kind enough to refill it for me if it's close to expiring and I'm not done yet.
