Went to the first of 6 Wine Dinners featuring the different wine regions of France. Last nights was Burgundy. Chef was adamant about keeping everything authentic to the region. What a beautiful, upscale dining option in the south suburbs! Tallgrass's restaurant mixes the historic charm of downtown lockport with an elegant interior. The restaurant itself feels very intimate and exclusive because of its size. The drinks menu has something for everyone where the food menu focuses on specialty items you can't find at most other restaurants in the area. For cocktails, I highly recommend their martini service. I got both the French Martini and Espresso Martini and thoroughly enjoyed them both! My SIL also got the Vesper Martini which was surprisingly amazing. All had a unique flavor profile, spirit forward, but also balanced well. My husband also got the TG Bees Knees which was delicious. For food, we started with the Baked Feta. This came with four warm pieces of bread to pair with the warm feta and sauce. For entrees, our waitress said the most popular dishes were the Duck and Seasonal Catch. My husband ordered the Pan Roasted Duck and enjoyed the tenderness and flavor. I ordered the Ravioli Au Dauphine which was served as a sheet. I enjoyed the filling flavor mixed with the sauce and cheese topping. It was the perfect winter pasta. My brother and SIL shared the Pork Belly Confit and Pan Seared Scallops. All dishes came out with a beautiful presentation. Across the board the portions seemed a bit small but you could taste the freshness and quality of the ingredients they used. Gabby waited on our table and was such a joy. She was smiling always, made some great recommendations, gave us a good laugh at times, and was kind to take our photo to savor the night. Let's start off with I have wanted to try this place for years. I left the area, moved to the city and never really thought about it. Now I moved back to the burbs and here I am. The restaurant was clean and beautifully appointed. We were promptly greeted and sat down right away. The staff were beyond nice! It's my birthday so there was a beautiful birthday menu and a glass of prosecco to go with it. We started with the bread service with the most delicious compounded butter. The prawns were so delicious and tender. Definitely had a fresh taste, that wasn't frozen. We shared the Parisian gnocchi and tallgrass burger. The herbed gnocchi was so delicate and melted in your mouth. The burger was juicy, not greasy. Cooked to a perfect medium. If you are looking for a city worthy restaurant in the burbs this is it. I noticed that the restaurant had reopened under new guidance from a locally known Chef and Mixologist couple. The previous iteration of Tallgrass was always a culinary experience but had a bit of rigidity to it that sometimes detracted from the overall experience. I still love what the old Tallgrass did from a culinary standpoint but this is the present and here is my review. This experience was well above and beyond that of the old days. The scene - The look and vibe of Tallgrass is now chic, cool and a bit modern even though some of the old restaurant's elements remain. There is a new and absolutely amazing patio waiting on warmer weather. I'll take a 5 pm Thursday reservation every week from May 15th through October 31st!! Pro Tip - Order the bread service and compound butter spreads when you order your drinks. You will want it with your appetizers and your charcuterie board if going in that direction. First - The main menu and the specials menu had so many amazing items on it. The warm date and bacon appetizer was delicious, unique and a perfect start. That focaccia bread would've been perfect to scoop up the remaining date and bacon salad. Second - the cocktail menu options are unique, flavorful and well composed. Madison oversees the "bar" program and it is flourishing. Lots of choices and this evening we tried 5 different cocktails. Our favorites were the Bacon Fat Washed Vodka Martini and the Warmed Spiced Cocktail which was perfect for a cold evening. Third - We ordered the Charcuterie board and loaded it up with 5 different options. The Chef (owner) introduced the area to the À la carte version of charcuterie dining some years ago and he brought it to Tallgrass. AMEN. Photo of our board is in the pics. Order a bottle and a board, sit back and enjoy. Fourth - We were already fairly full so we skipped proper entrées. As a person who loves to explore food it is my mission to come back and try as many items on the menu before they disappear into the ether due to seasonality and the culinary whims (freedom) of the Chef. Fifth - Dessert... our table ordered separate desserts and the Canelés that I had were superb. Crispy, chewy, light and fluffy all in one. Yum. A few items of note - it is an older building so frigid temps can impact the experience. We dressed for walking from public parking to the restaurant and it suited us well inside. The entry is no longer through the basement. It is on that newly created patio side (courtyard). The staff are fantastic. This is a special place. Delicious, creative food offerings, polite and well-trained service, and relaxed elegant ambiance! An anniversary celebration, my wife and traveled over an hour to Tallgrass in festive downtown Lockport. Lockport, led by Mayor Steve Streit, has transformed the historic downtown into a great place to walk, dine, and enjoy! We enjoyed complimentary Anniversary champagne to start! We shared the Beef Tartare which was presented artfully by Lena from under a smoke dome! I also enjoyed the salmon crudo. For entrees, we had the Parisian Gnocchi and a Halibut seasonal catch. The former was comfort food with asparagus and snow peas in a tasty sauce and the latter was served with delicious roasted tomatoes and peppers over a carrot reduction. Finally, save some room for dessert! We had a delicious chocolate mousse with chocolate pearls for a special crunch and the French Canele. Both 5! So completely underwhelming. It was almost like we felt we were unwanted as soon as we walked in. Had a reservation at 7:30. It was almost completely empty but somehow the staff had no time for us and kept hitting my chair. It felt kind of personal-as I am a POC it is hard not to feel paranoid. We each had the three course meal and the French onion soup was cold (without cheese which just was odd but maybe for the best?) , the Cacio e Pepe was cold (I was asked if I wanted a take home box when I couldn't finish it-which added to the insult), my husband's squash was cold and though the steak was pretty good it was the bloody cow, not the cooking, honestly. At 8:30 we were told they were closing down and we had to hurry our dessert and after dinner drinks. (Poached pear-busy and not exceptional) On a Saturday. We had to find someone to pay our bill because they were busy cleaning up the place. $400+ for an experience that I could have gotten at a Francesca's, Phoenix or Jack Gibbons for less than half the price and with SUCH a better feeling at the end of it. We had one of those rare nights out alone without kids and were pretty excited to have a romantic time....and I would rather have just cooked at home. This was a hidden gem in the suburbs. They have a great tasting menu (you choose the courses) and exceptional service. Free parking in the lot close by as well as street parking. We did the 7 course tasting which was excellent. However, a 5 course tasting is more than enough food. Honestly, each course was delicious but i thought the crisp shrimp was just ok. Highly recommend a drive over here, definitely on par with the Michelin star restaurants in Chicago but not overpriced. read more

We haven't dined at Tallgrass in years and I was so happy to be back again. This is an upscale fine dining restaurant. With only 8 tables, it's intimate and romantic. We came to The Green Dinner on St Patrick's Day. It was a fabulous multi-course dinner. We started with cocktails, an old fashioned and a paloma. My husband and I were underwhelmed with them. The server was making cocktails so...not really a mixologist crafting good cocktails. However, their wine list is very good and we switched to wine. To start, we had a small Gruyère tart with a shot glass of a cold soup that the patrons were asked to guess the three ingredients. I guessed carrot, apple & leek. So far off...cauliflower, carrot and grape. It was a fun element to the dinner. Courses... SMOKED SALMON TARTARE CRISP POLENTA, SCALLION EMULSION * SPINACH GNOCCHI, PECORINO SAGE BROWN BUTTER (amazing...my favorite!!!) * ASPARAGUS, AVOCADO, ENDIVE, ARRUGULA GREEN GODDESS * SPRING CAPON BREAST, MUSHROOM PESTO WATERCRESS SAUCE * FLOURLESS CHOCOLATE GATEAU CHOCOLATE CRUNCH, MINT ANGLAISE (They should have served this in another vessel as I lost so much of the crunch falling on the table) * Then we were brought a little dessert shot of a whipped cream and cherry. Our first visit since the remodel/ownership change. A lovely remodel, entering through the old garden courtyard with a new door and windows which added light to the previous space. The beautiful floor and ceiling have been left unchanged. Remains an intimate setting. The new ownership has kept the classic Tallgrass logos and the beautiful French music .The menu is smaller, remains quite French, with options for three courses and a charcuterie course. This was an interesting dining experience. You choose 3, 4, or 5 courses and pick from quite an extensive tasting menu while identifying which option you'd like for your main entree. Each course was delicious but nothing was mind-blowing. Some of the flavors, like those in the butter shrimp medley, were off just a bit but portions were plentiful and we went home stuffed. I got the seasonal souffle for dessert and was unfortunately underwhelmed. Again, the tastes were off and I think it was a tad undercooked. Have always wanted to try this place. Came by earlier in the year to find they were closed and appeared to be going through renovations. We were finally able to go there this past weekend. Upon entering the restaurant I was quite surprised on the interior. It took me back years. I overheard that there were new owners and a new chef. I was under the impression it was Americana cuisine before but now it was French Fusion. We ordered the onion soup and red and gold beet salad. The salad was very good, just had a hard time finding the hazel nuts. Soup was unremarkable with a crouton the full size of the bowl. Very difficult to cut pieces off in the bowl without spilling. My fiancee ordered the gnocchi and felt it was too heavy on the potato side, not airy. I had the fuck breast, which I found very tasty. read more

Well, I have been there for three anniversaries. The first one was really good. I was really amazed. The other two very disappointed went downhill a lot. It just wasn't the same as the first time we went very disappointed. The food was OK. It wasn't bad at all however, I like my food a little hotter. The plates were so hot. You couldn't touch it but the food like ice, which is really weird which we had to have it reheated which is crazy for the money to pay. Service was good. The first time we went excellent the last two times we went fair. Some people may hate different experiences but that's my two or three experiences. The first time we went was really nice. I really thought it was different friendly nice looking fairly clean inside a little weird on how you pay if you pay with cash, but it worked nonetheless. The last two times I'm not too sure. I'll be back. Just lost something in a translation somewhere in the last couple of times we were there and cost too much money and way too much time like everybody else trying to go for a good good time a good evening and get disappointed twice not cheap to find that out. All I can say is if you wanna try it I'll try it out, but be wary you know be wary of what you are looking for some people have a great experience not so hot. That's all I gotta say. read more

My friend has been talking about this place forever and a day. We finally went last night. Had a 6:30 reservation and were seated immediately. The menu/concept is quite unique. Any menu item (except desserts of course) can be an appetizer size or a main dish size. You can select items from the menu like any other restaurant; have a 3 or 4 course tasting or you can do a 7 course chef directed tasting as long as all parties at the table select that. Always being a duo that goes big or goes home we went with the 7 course chef directed tasting and said we were okay with upcharged items. FOLKS! What a delight. From the first slice of bread to the last bite of the multi item dessert selection we were wow'ed. Everything was delightful, different, fresh, wonderfully seasoned and fantastically plated. I cannot pick my favorite course. Full disclosure: This was a major splurge and one that most folks couldn't do on a weekly basis, but talk about bang for your buck. We were both really pleased with the entire experience. The staff goes out of their way to be helpful and the gentleman who delivers the dishes and explains them does a great job. I would definitely recommend this place for anybody--with the options of selecting what works for your appetite and budget you cannot go wrong. read more

Crazy expensive, looks are incredibly outdated, they had the AC at like 65, and all but the wine list are just awful. Prices on the list and many of the wines on the menu are terrific, but that was the only positive we had. Went for our anniversary, did the 5 course for $89/person, plus any add-ons for the dishes we ordered. I had the diver scallops, they were rubbery, plating looked like a child saw a Michelin star restaurant dish and tried to recreate it, needed at least some finishing salt. Parsley walnut pesto ravioli was fine, but there was a bit too much lemon juice and the grated parm on top was definitely from a big bulk bag, not freshly grated parmigiano reggiano, which I think is a small ask for the price of the food. Capon breast with ratattouille was a joke, the breast was a bit chewy, not very juicy, and the vegetables were cooked until gray and transluscent. The Grilled NY strip was the worst, rubbery, yet cooked to my asked medium rare, no seasoning, and there was a dill emulsion of sorts, that is not a welcomed compliment to a steak, that belongs with smoked salmon. Also there was supposed to be some jalapeno lime element to the steak, absolutely none there. And the gratin potatoes were fine, but should be a touch crispier in my opinion on the top and bottom. Truly an awful experience, do not waste your money or time. You could have an amazing meal up at Niche in Geneva or Vie in Western Springs, both of which have been open for a long time and received Michelin stars. Or go to the city for an a meal and spend 1/2 as much as you would here. I cannot believe how horrendous this meal was for the price. I will regret this meal and how much it cost me, for a long time. read more

I was told that this place was probably one of the best in the western suburbs. And it's the closest thing without actually going into the city for some quality dining. And so far from my experience here, that I agree with that statement. They have a 3,4 or 5 course meal. They also have a 7 course tasting menu. If you're hungry, then go for the 5 course meal. If you have an ok appetite and you're ok with smaller portions, you should try the 7 course tasting menu. I opted for the 7 course tasting menu, because I had a feeling I would be back, so I can try out more of their dishes. Again, service was above average. I was there on a random Wednesday evening. Slow night with only 3 tables being utilized and only Colleen was serving. She was very attentive. I asked if she can make me a Mai Tai, and although it took about 20 minutes, she was very determined to find out on how to make it. And it was pretty damn good too. My recommendation...go for the house assortment dessert plate. Aside from the hair in my food, she replaced my dish right away, comped my drinks, I had a great time. The staff was incredibly friendly. Food, eh. 3 Course meal. Scallops as my starter - Amazing Seafood Platter- An extra $5... it was OKAY. Lobster lasanga was over cooked and flavorless. The deviled egg was definitely bitter. Shrimp on a cracker was nothing special. Salmon perogi was too salty and had a strong fishy smell. Crab puff was delicious. Duck confit as the main course- nothing to write home about. The sauteed Japanese was too salty and had a strong mushroom smell. The duck breast was cooked to my preference, however it was drenched in the gravy of the mushrooms. The confit was in a crepe, was not as flavorful as I had anticipated. For my mother's 60th birthday my parents and I went to Tallgrass (special restaurant for a special occasion!) It's a sort of conspicuous gem on the slightly scrubby old main street of downtown Lockport, a place that seems like it could really make something more of itself if it tried a bit harder. Anyway, Tallgrass seems to want to make you aware of its specialness by putting you through an obstacle course just to get inside. You enter below street level, which lends a kind of speakeasy vibe, but then promptly hike up a steep set of stairs again. The dining room is a very cool space, with molded ceilings, chandeliers, and tiled floors (the multi-mirrored bathroom could plunge one into a paranoiac panic). We opted for the three courses (which was plenty, and they had no problem with us sneaking bites off one another). The first course consisted of appetizer or salad choices. My dad got the bruscetta salad, and I the wedge of romaine (proscuitto being a more delicate version to the stodgier bacon crumbles that one generally sees). But my mother made the best choice with an appetizer combo consisting of a literally melt-in-your-mouth lobster ravioli, a deviled egg (its filling the consistency of whipped cream), a crab beignet (think of Cafe du Monde making the perfect crab Rangoon), and a smoked salmon gnocci. For the second course, my father had the steak with lobster bernaise sause and king crab lettuce roll with a potato terrine. He enjoyed the entree but thought the terrine (think potato lasagna) was awkward. I enjoyed my entree overall: tender diver scallops with bacon (the proscuitto again would have been better) in a voluptuous vanilla sauce, garnished with tiny balls of honeydew and cantaloupe (rather hard to nab with a fork) and some stringy, tough leeks. It was a tasty disk, though a slightly weird execution. My mom chose halibut with lemon butter and mango sauce with proscuitto, which complemented one another nicely. The dessert course offered a wide variety to choose from, especially with several options for "tasting" menus. My mother did this and received a combo of an apple crisp, blueberry crumble, chocolate souffle, orange creamsicle pot de creme, and creme brulee served in an eggshell. I got the chocolate version, which was interesting but really too heavy: chocolate mousse, a mini souffle, a "tower" wrapped around a filling of whipped cream and raspberry, an insanely rich truffle, and a tiny crepe with banana-chocolate filling. Of all I preferred the mousse: like a smooth, luscious chocolate pudding. Service was very attentive, the only bobble being when the server brought the wrong Chateau Neuf du Pape (red rather than white); since reds can be much more $$, this was a booboo. They offered to change it, but we tried it and were okay with it, and the price disparity wasn't insane in this case. Overall, it was a good choice for a special occasion meal in the sw suburbs. Tallgrass can stand tall as one of the highlights of fine dining if you are looking in the region of Joliet. read more

This place is truly a gem. I recommend everyone go at lease once. If nothing else then the dessert and being treated like a dignitary. From the moment my wife and I walked in they called us by Mr and Mrs, (last name) the whole time. It was the little touches that make this already amazing place over the top. I liked the fact that they have a dress code for Men. This is a rarity in today's world and I am all for going for a nice evening with jeans and a polo but sometimes on special occasion I like to dress in a jacket and it takes away from the evening when the rest of the people are in causal attire. Even our bill, at the end of the meal, came beautifully handwriting in almost a calligraphy format. The food was amazing, my wife and end went with the 5 courses a piece and it was a little too much, but it was our first time. Would do 4-courses on the next trip. read more

The staff (waiters,bartender) were friendly and informative, clearly trying to make the best of a negative work environment. I booked a reservation a week in advance and was contacted the night before to confirm our reservation. I was hung up on before I could ask any questions but figured it was the beginning of a long night. I called the evening of our reservation to inform the potential of being 10-15 minutes late and was told aggressively we have no openings. I explained I had a reservation and if being late was an issue we completely understand. I was then told "if it's more than 15 minutes I can't guarantee you anything. This made me hesitant but I understand the conditions being a foodie and we went anyways for our anniversary. We showed up 8 minutes late and everything seemed to be fine. We opted for the 5 course meal after twice asking for clarification of the menu. My main "course" was for the lamb chops in which I asked for it to be done medium. The rack was cooked as ordered and the lamb chop was not rare but raw and cold. I am not one to send something back but showed the waitress who clearly understood and took my dish back. It was returned to me as previously cut but now a cold rack of lamb and a seared over done lamb chop grizzled and hard to chew. I simply stated i did not want the course and requested to speak the the chef as I have many highly acclaimed friends/chefs in the restaurant industry. It seemed to be microwave cooked/heated. The chef had already left so the owner came to the table and stayed we don't even have a microwave in this restaurant. I again calmly explained my frustration and said for the amount of money ($250) I expected to receive a newly prepared entree at the expected preparation. The owner then reluctantly stated if you can wait another 30mins you can get what you want. I then said it's fine just charge me for a four course meal instead of the five. As he walked away he muttered "f"ing ahole" and walked away. I then proceeded to say I believe I talked you on the phone earlier and you were quite rude. He turned around, slammed his fists on our table and said, "how long have you even done anything in your life ,I've been in this industry for forty years." I was shocked and simply stated long enough to know as a young professional this isn't how you treat a customer. At that my wife and I were told to "get out and do me a favor and don't come back." We were awe struck and honored the owners request. At that the staff was extremely apologetic stating we are so sorry he can be grumpy. Coming from the city and simply looking for a good fine dining experience we we were obviously disappointed. As a healthcare professional new to the area being judged on age for a kitchen mishap is unacceptable. We were asked to not return and obviously won't. Don't give them your money when they clearly could care less about their patrons. Extremely disappointed and have never experienced anything like this in the restaurant industry. So... we really tried to like this place... I really don't understand why all the positive reviews. Maybe Tallgrass people just don't get out much. I took my wife here for her birthday, and I have to say there are certainly much, much better places to go. We arrived and walked downstairs, only to be confronted by the matradee who apparently did not like the fact that we had just walked in. Apparently she had forgotten to lock the door. Sorry not our fault... But, Just a really, really, dumb way to enter a restaurant. Regarding the food, we enjoyed the squash ravioli and that was pretty much it. The duck was good but way too spicy hot, the guitar pasta was tasteless, and the beet salad really should be renamed the arugula salad, being there were barely any beets to taste. Strangely, they walk around with a bread basket, asking what you would like, rather than leaving a sample or two of bread to taste. The biggest joke was having to wait A HALF HOUR for the souffle of the day, which was downright awful. It wasn't even cooked... it was more like the soup souffle of the day. And of course, NO APOLOGIES FOR HAVING US WAIT, AND NO ONE EVER CARED THAT THE DESERT WAS SENT AWAY UNTOUCHED. As we left back up the stairs outside, my poor wife almost clobbered her head on the metal gate on top, being it had gotten dark outside, and was almost impossible to see.
