We enjoyed the shareable plates, we weren't wowed by The Wiccan Chicken and Shrimp Tacos without shrimp, since there were little to no vegetarian options. I did enjoy their cocktails. Went here for my birthday on a Wednesday evening. The ambiance is very cool with the old exposed brick and interior, but if you aren't by the bar, it's dark. We had to use the lights on our phones to read the menu. Between the lighting and the font they use on the menus they are hard to read. I had a beer, my wife and son both had mixed drinks which they said were pretty good. Food took a long time to arrive based on the amount of people there, and the entrees weren't hot. I had the "Sage against the Machine" which was tasty, but only the center of my salmon was hot. Defintely seemed like the food sat for a while before it came out or was microwaved. Service people are dressed well, educated and friendly. We chose two appetizers, the chips and dip for the price I was expecting homemade chips. They were store bought chips. Still tasty. Drinks were spot on. Flavorful, not over poured and in a correct glass. Perfect. Dinner took a bit longer than expected but was flavorful and worth the price. Maybe because we came on Labor Day, they were short staffed. But food took FOREVER to come out!! The service is good (I would say great but it was hard to wave someone down sometimes). The staff are very friendly and helpful (especially when we had a lot of allergy requests). The ambiance is amazing with high ceilings, tables, unique decor, and even the check came in a cute little box! Food was good too. It just took about 40 plus min for the food to come out (but they kindly brought the kids food out as soon as they could). One of the best restaurants in the Southwest suburbs! I eat here twice a week on average, and am never disappointed. The current kitchen staff may be their best team yet! The bartending team is one of the best amd most experienced in all of Chicagoland, and can hang with any bar in the city. They are masters of craft cocktails, with an impressive original cocktail and craft beer menu. The wait staff are incredibly friendly and also a team of veterans who take care of their guests like family. I'm not enough of a whiskey or bourbon fan to understand nor appreciate, but the guys behind the bar are, and they're the ones making my drinks! (Hell ya!) so... Five shining stars for this absolute gem in Plainfield. Their space is large enough for events and rentals. Our server was so nice. The way he described the ingredients in the "good sauce" convinced us to order that extra side of fries and it was worth it. Mind you, my husband and I already each had a side of whipped potatoes. My husband and I have visited many times, but I want to give special recognition to the server we had yesterday -- Dick. From the moment we arrived, he went out of his way to enhance our visit, starting by sharing a bit of the establishment's history with our friends who were experiencing it for the first time -- a gesture that was both thoughtful and welcoming. Tonight, our travels took us to Plai field for a birthday party at Sovereign. Upon entering the establishment, we were created immediately at sat in the cozy corner. Initial impressions of ambiance were warm with the soft glow of yellowish lighting. Their drink and food menu were plentiful. The problem was it was so dark in the room that everyone one of us had to turn the flashlights on our pho es on to read the menus. The second issue we had was that it took forever to get a waitress to help us. The service was very slow all night. The 6 of us tried something different. One had pork chops, another had scallops, my wife had the flounder, I had the half chicken, another had the steak, and last was the Wiccan Chicken. Everyone really liked their dishes except my wife. We both agreed her flounder was nothing special. Definitely would not order that again. My half chicken was very favorable. It came with French fries, but the waitress told me it came with rice. That was very disappointing. The fries were good in the sauce that is pooled at the bottom of the dish... just not what I wanted nor expected. The ambiance was normal noise level, so that was not an issue. Overall, the place has a very nice atmosphere, the food, for the most part, was good. The service and pricing not good at all. I'd say they are worth stopping in if you don't mind waiting awhile for service, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go back. read more

Tried this restaurant with my husband over lunch. We started off with Blueberry Watermelon Mock tail which was amazing. For food, we had focaccia and fried green jalapeños. Personally I liked focaccia over the fried green jalapeños. For main course we then had veggie sandwich with a side of kale and chicken burger with a side of mashed potatoes. The mains were delicious. The ambiance was so trendy and hip. They have pretty huge seating area. The decor was so modern. The service was great. Our server was warm, friendly and super attentive. This will be my second review of this establishment. my first review was in 2022 and was critical of the atmosphere that the restaurant's management chose to create. on our previous visit loud,abrasive,vulgar heavy metal music was playing during our entire visit, which was early afternoon on a weekday, not Saturday after 10pm. today we were pleasantly surprised by the lovely atmosphere created by cheerful pop/jazz music played at a reasonable volume. The food was much improved, I had a delicious breakfast griddle sandwich and my wife had a fried chicken on biscuit with gravy. both were so very good that there was no need for a doggy bag. The service was very good, the facility has impressive features. I'm pleased that they decided to offer a more appropriate music selection,which may be the deciding factor that made me write an updated and more favorable review. highly recommend Sovereign. read more

I love the ambiance of this place. It has a great location downtown Plainfield and the patio this evening was so great. I don't like the outdoor tables as I would bump my shin on the mid height bar. Our service was good but not exceptional. However, I did like that every time a server came out they were carrying something even if it wasn't for their table. The menu is fairly small so there aren't a lot of choices but I was interested in just about everything. I had the rapture of the sea which is their seafood special as it was a Faroe island salmon with lentils. I really enjoyed the salmon, and while the lentils were not bad, I might've enjoyed the dish with a different pairing. My wife had the meat special called Born of Fire which was a baseball steak with a Demi glacé and Parmesan fries. Her fries and the Demi glacé were pretty solid but none of it blew me away. I'd give the meal a 4.5. Id be interested in trying the chicken and frites as it looked pretty decent when I saw others get it. I really enjoyed my righteous and the wicked (pear martini). We were immediately greeted and sat when we walked in, I thought we might be turned away since it was close to closing time. They are professional, courteous and quick. It has a gothic hipster vibe that could simultaneously pass for an upscale date night. The ceiling is exposed and the furniture and lighting is all dark. Now, the food. I ordered the gnocchi with a medley of mushrooms and cherry tomatoes. It has a generous peppery, brown balsamic sauce. My friend ordered a burger and he enjoyed it. The fries are top 10. Perfect crispy outside with a satisfying crunch and mushy inside. The house fries come with a delectable Cajun seasoning, I can only dream about how good their truffle fries are. Loved it here! Our first trip to Sovereign was for their recent whiskey dinner which featured a Prix Fixe menu of bourbon-inspired dishes and pairings with Weller 12, Blanton's, and Eagle Rare. The food was fantastic, highlighted by the Maple Bacon Bourbon Upside Down Waffle Cone. The whiskey pairings were great and the whole experience was very reasonably priced. I came in for a weeknight dinner with a friend. Frank was our sever and he was great. He took the time to explain the menu and portion sizes. They have an excellent local beer and cocktail selection. On our visit we sat inside, but they have a nice patio area as well. I went with a half order of wings to start. They were delicious. Then I had the clucker chicken sandwich. It was good as well. JUST LIKE HEAVEN - I don't believe it was coincidental when I got seated at Sovereign and close to me was a framed picture of Robert Smith, frontman of The Cure. During dinner they played a song from their latest album released in 2024 which made me very happy (odd given the album is so dark and mostly talks about death and getting old). I had to order a dark beer (imperial stout) to go with the dark mood of my soul. Our polite waiter recommended the frybread appetizer. I rate it 10 points and highly recommend it to anyone visiting this location for the first time. I also ordered the tuna special they had for the day. I personally thought it was a little bit on the salty side, but I am not a fragile thing and was able to appreciate the entree for its flavor. It was a decent size serving too.
