Vegetarians are delighted here as well Moving on to vegans such as myself... they offer a delicious and I mean SCRUMPTIOUS veggie burger that I would carry out or eat at a patio table anytime! One star off for the stink of cooking animal flesh which killed my appetite and the meaty appearance of everyone's burgers did as well. The star off is also due to their inability to provide any information at all about their French fries and the cooking oil used Vegetarians and those on diets did great with their salads and appetizers Celiacs only fair a very weak okay for the gluten-free options We came here as a large work group, and the service was EXCELLENT Atmosphere was not suitable - we would not return as a group. Empire has a great atmosphere, especially if you can grab a spot on the rooftop. I visited on a sunny day and really enjoyed the view overlooking the river. I ordered the "Jane," which is a pretty standard burger with lettuce, tomato, and cheese. It was good overall and cooked well, but it wasn't anything especially memorable or the best burger I've had. One thing that surprised me was how limited the menu was considering how large the restaurant is. I expected a bit more variety. Great Naperville burger spot! Especially in warm weather when the rooftop is open and enjoyable with a river view. 5 stars for atmosphere and great vibes!! We've always had great service and there's plenty of seating though it does get busy at dinner time. The burgers here are good! Tasty, and a variety of interesting options, not the most memorably delicious burger ever but it's a really good solid burger option at a nice spot downtown. My favorite though is the Big Dipper burger which comes with an au jus- this is super tasty! My FAVE item is the burger cigar appetizer. This is a stand out for me! Now warning.. it is greasy. But in the best way!! The sauce is savory and a little sweet with a crispy wonton outside and gooey pimento cheese and burger filling-- definitely give it a try! We had lunch at Empire. We sat upstairs on the roof in the enclosed greenhouse area. It was 20 degrees outside but we were roasting in the sun. I probably would not choose a sun table again for that reason. They have a nice selection of local brews on tap. I had the Yardbird Chicken Sandwich with a side salad. The chicken was dipped in a buttermilk broth and cooked perfectly. The sauce on the chicken was sooo good. I ended up cutting it up because it was super messy and fell apart when I tried to lift it. The pretzel roll was just okay. Their menu is pretty limited - burgers, sandwiches, a few salads and they did have fish tacos. I would go back. read more

We recently spent the day in Naperville and decided to hit a few places for small bites in order to try a few intriguing menu items. One place we wanted to try was Empire, for their "burger cigars." They are an angus and pimento cheese spring roll, which are very tasty. Also, our server treated us well. The interior is pretty cool, and the outdoor seating (I could see from outside) seemed neat. My two-star review comes from other issues with my time at Empire. I went to the restroom before eating, and in the accessible stall, huge drops of water were coming from a partially taped up pipe above the commode. It was extremely gross. They really should have done a better tape job and checked on it to see if the dripping was happening. When our burger cigars were served, the sauce, which I had requested to be on the side, was not on the side. The bottom of the three stacked "cigars" did not have much sauce on it, so I opted to just scrape off the minimal sauce instead of bringing it up to my server. The water served at the table was warm, not even a tad chilled, and the air-conditioning was either not on or not set at a comfortable temp. The textured water bottles served at the table are shaped much like wine bottles, so I wonder how well they are sanitized due to something else I witnessed. I watched a table being cleared. The table setup in the restaurant is they have appetizer plates already set up in the middle with napkin-wrapped silverware on top of them before patrons are seated. The person clearing the table left the unused small appetizer plates left there from the last guests. When the table was sprayed and wiped down, the guy held the plates in one hand and wiped the table down with a rag with the other hand. I feel it is very unacceptable to leave unused dishes on the table when guests have already sat there with said plates at the table. They could have been touched or coughed or sneezed on. This was so gross, which made me really get the ick from the fact I'd drank from their "wine bottle sized" water vessel. I doubt they care much about sanitation, given how they "reuse" the appetizer plates. read more

Downtown Naperville is packed with all manner of places worthy of your Instagram feed, but I find myself drawn to Empire for a number of reasons. In addition to top notch food, the vibes at this restaurant along the river between Main St and Washington keep me coming back. Their cocktails always satisfy, especially their mules & mojitos. Try the root beer old fashioned! Draft list is big, they always have plenty of nice options on tap including local area brews. For apps, we love the poutine ($10): fries with cheese curds, gravy, bacon, and sour cream. Their burgers are 1/2 lb and come with a wide variety of toppings. The signature Empire burger ($16) has a 50/50 bacon patty, sunny side egg, cream cheese, spring mix, and maple bourbon syrup on a pretzel bun. It sounds chaotic, but don't knock it until you've tried it.....it's amazing! Last visit I ordered the Sophia Loren ($16), a burger with fresh mozzarella, tomato, basil, artichoke pesto, and balsamic glaze. It was tasty, though not the best choice here. I loved the patty melt ($16) with grilled onions, jalapenos and chipotle mayo on Texas toast. Their house chips are dusted with a unique sugar-salt seasoning. The Key West ($15) might be the best turkey burger in existence with chili garlic aioli, a pineapple ring and maple glaze. The Yardbird ($15) is another solid pick, a fried chicken sandwich with bourbon-tomato jam (!) and dill salsa. Crispy fish tacos (3 for $16) come with cilantro, avocado, radish slaw and jalapeno crema; those too, are aces. Bread = 5 Circuses = 4.5 Empire's fried doughnuts ($11) are legendary. These irresistible bites are rolled in cinnamon sugar and served warm along with crème anglaise dipping sauce. I'd say they're as good as, if not better than, the doughnuts at Next Whiskey Bar in Plainfield. In case all of that wasn't reason enough, Empire has the only retractable roof deck in the Chicago suburbs. I prefer the top floor because the ambiance is much more open and airy than the darker (and trendier) first floor. Also, they've got trivia on Monday nights. Last time my wife and I won 1st place and got $30 off our bill! * TL;DR * Across several visits I've come to expect delicious food and great vibes at this downtown Naperville restaurant. Service has rarely faltered and being able to enjoy the rooftop bar year-round is incredible (I've sat up there in the dead of winter, and although it's not shorts-and-T-shirt warm, the heaters go a long way towards comfort). Doughnuts are probably the best thing here, a must-order. Whether for a quick drink or long meal, Empire is very much worth your time. P.S. look for the quirky spiraling 'staircase to nowhere' inside! The family and I decided to stop by Empire for a quick lunch. Parking in Naperville can be an issue, however, we usually park at one, of three?, parking garages. They are rarely filled. One is to the north, another to west, and one to the south east. Empire was very easy to locate, and we arrived shortly after they were opened. We were seated right away, and I think Empire were busy than they expected...felt very sorry for our waitress who was running around almost non-stop. She was also very apologetic which I cannot and will not dock points for. The location inside was very nicely laid out. We were seated on the outer perimeter which I didn't mind especially since we have a toddler and a stroller. I was always under the impression this was a restaurant/club which I can see for the night life. For our appetizer, we got the Burger Cigars. They were arrived shortly after. I found them to be very delicious..even my toddler daughter enjoyed them and she usually is not fond of meat. For my lunch, I got the Abe Forman with a side of chips instead of fries. The burger was very delicious. The meat was perfectly cooked at medium rare. There were slices of sausages with some caramelized onions, and a bleu cheese sauce. Overall, I would get this burger again. I might try their fries next time. However, I did enjoy the chips tho! Overall, the service was long but they were still very friendly, and she tried her best. This bar and restaurant is located in downtown Naperville. I'm here on a business trip and this is where our group had dinner. If I live here, this would be the type of place that I would frequent. Our private dining area was upstairs with outside the patio over overlooking the river. They also had a full bar upstairs. We were treated to appetizers and drinks. Downstairs they had live music starting at 9pm. Staffs was attentive and made sure our drink orders were filled and appetizers kept coming out. My buddy and I met up to watch sports, have drinks, and share some burgers. Overall, we had a great experience and I absolutely plan to revisit this organization when I'm in the area. The burgers were FANTASTICALLY juicy. The fries were a bit plainer than I thought they would be, but not a turnoff. The prices are actually pretty reasonable as well considering it's in downtown Naperville. The only two annoyances we had is one of the bartenders kept putting our whiskey in liqueur glasses. We sent at least 2 drinks back. And the other thing was they don't have the FULL sport packages for the tvs in the sports bar (we were advised only local sports). No nba package. No nfl season pass. We went to the Empire in Lombard tonight and what a disaster it was. We sat at the bar and the service was horrible and quite honestly they weren't even that busy. W My friend ordered the Sophia Loren burger and I ordered the Jane burger. It literally took 1.5 hours for our food to arrive. When it finally did arrive my friends burger was as dry as a hockey puck with a piece of mozzarella on it the size of a quarter no tomato no basil aioli and they even managed to screw up the chips they gave her. Mine was a little better but not much. This meal ended up costing us 100.00 and it waw definitely not worth a nickel. Honestly, I deserve a refund. Our burger club was supposed to go elsewhere in Naperville, but their hostess was terrible and we decided to try Empire instead. It is on our Burger Club list, so we decided, what the heck, let's try it. The place is huge! Tons of seating and an area for live music indoors. We were seated immediately and the server was on us like white on rice. She immediately took out drink order and then gave us time to figure out our food orders. There were five of us and three of our party got the Gronk Burger. It's a double patty, but not a smashburger. They're thick patties. with cheddar, fried onions, bacon, and beer BBQ drizzle. It's definitely a big burger. So much so that the ingredients were lost within the burger and were unable to be individual flavors amongst the meat itself. One person got the Jane and said it was a pretty good burger. I ordered The G.O.A.T. The goat cheese was plentiful, the candied bacon was thick, and the honey drizzle was not a drizzle but instead was a downpour. My burger was floating in honey that I had to remove the bottom bun. I'm not adverse to removing a bun to eat a burger with knife and fork, but never at the outset. It was a sticky mess. And despite this setback, the burger itself was very good, until...the last 1/4 of the burger tasted as if it was coated in salt. And I was not the only one at the table with this issue. One of the Gronk burgers was also halfway dipped in salt. I don't know what happened when they finished cooking the burgers, but the salt was overwhelming. In addition to my salty burger, I upgraded my fries to the poutine fries. Don't do this to your order. I took the hit for you. The curds were dry and chewy. There was a significant lack of gravy. And I was charged $10 for this upgrade and it wasn't worth it. So in the end, the service was great, the ambience nice, and the food mediocre - well, the burgers are quite mediocre. If you go to Empire, try ordering something else and leave the burgers in the pile of salt. read more

Overall pretty happy with our choice to eat here. We visited for dinner after doing an escape room nearby, and wanted to find a place where we could be seated pretty quick. That was the case here--the place is pretty big with lots of seating downstairs and upstairs. We were told the rooftop was enclosed so we chose that. It turned out that only half of it was enclosed and we were seated on the other half in open-air. Given it was pretty chilly and windy, that wasn't what we were going for. Fortunately there was still a table for 4 located in the warmer half and we were able to move there instead. We noticed at least two other parties do kind of the same thing, where they were seated outside, look around for a little bit, and then get up to leave (or perhaps ask for another table). It would probably be helpful to note that half of the rooftop is uncovered before sending folks up on colder nights. We ordered some food and drinks after getting to our new table and everything came out really quickly. We started with poutine which was good, but a little small and only had a few cheese curds on top. I ordered the Key West burger and really liked it. Since we had fries in the poutine, I opted for the chips and they were unexpectedly sweet, but pretty good. My husband got the Best Wurst and liked that too, though couldn't really taste any of the chipotle mayo that was supposed to be on it. We love a pretzel bun and theirs were good. Just be warned they are a little messy so if you are on a date use a fork and knife lol. My G.O.A.T burger was excellent, and didn't require any additional condiments. Whoa Baby! I was staying at Hotel Indigo about a 1/2 block away and decided to try Empire for Team dinner during our stay. We selected this restaurant because of the menu variety and I'm so glad we dined here. We arrived at 6:15ish on a Tuesday night with no reservation and we were given the option to sit inside on the first floor or outside on the second floor. We opted for a booth on the first floor. The team was super excited to try the burgers recommended by our waitress the Empire and the GOAT! We also did some sharing with tater tots and the poutine fries. The tarot tots weren't loaded as I imagined them but instead stuffed with bacon and cheese. I didn't mind them but they weren't what I really wanted. The poutine fries were just ok the sauce or gravy was lukewarm when they arrived. I opted for the GOAT burger and was super excited to try a burger with goat cheese and candied bacon. When my burger arrived it looked amazing minus the bacon (it looked like normal bacon) . I dressed it up with the honey and took a bite and again it wasn't hot it was lukewarm so that was a bummer. The flavors were rich and satisfying but the bacon also didn't taste candied so I was a little disappointed. I ordered the side salad and loved that it came with strawberries and tomatoes, I asked for the dressing on the side. The salad was good but I think too many toppings and not enough lettuce. My colleagues really liked their empire burgers as well (they all finished them). My fiance and I stopped here for dinner and it was an interesting experience. We were seated right away which was great, however, once seated the service lacked. It took about 15 mins for anyone to notice we were there. We almost walked out and at the last second someone did approach us. We decided to put in our drink and food order at the same time to avoid another 20 mins of staring at each other with hangry expressions. Within 2-3 mins our food orders came out. It was freakishly fast and not in a good way. Thankfully I'm writing this review the day after and no stomach ache for either of us. Our beers eventually got to our table which I guess is fine. Speaking of tables - they are extremely sticky. We heard others commenting about it as well. The staff member explained to the table behind us that the sanitizer they use causes a chemical reaction which leaves a sticky feel to their tables. Food was OK. We both ordered burgers - the big dipper and the empire. The pretzel bun is a nice touch, everything else was meh. We both ordered our burgers medium - 1 came very well done and the other came medium rare. The meat itself looked questionable that I stopped eating completely. The beer was fine, plenty of choices which I appreciated. Empire won't be a place I'd recommend to meet up with others, but if someone absolutely wanted to go - I'd stop in for a beer, pass on food and sit at the bar. read more

We were in downtown Naperville a few days ago and wanted to visit the famous Empire Burgers and Brew! It's summer time so their outdoor rooftop seating is open which was so nice! They also have a rooftop bar open so you can even hang out there before or after you eat! The service here is incredible, the staff is always so welcoming and sweet and gives recommendations if it's your first time! I've been to Empire one time before and it was years ago so I was really excited to try it out again. I got the veggie burger with a side salad and my husband got the Jane burger with a side salad. The veggie burger patty is made of black beans and corn. It was pretty flavorful but the burger itself felt soggy. The patty wasn't warm and lacked freshness, which was disappointing because had it been freshly prepared, it would've been absolutely incredible. The Jane burger was good but nothing to write home about. The burger itself did not taste fresh and lacked flavor. The side salad was quite refreshing, though! It was fresh and tangy and went really well with the burgers! I think I had very high expectations given all the rave about Empire in the Naperville area. I do think it's a a great spot for a date or a hang out given its location, rooftop seating, and industrial vibes inside. In terms of food, however, I feel like it just did not meet my expectations and I've had better burgers around the area. read more

A group of us were at a local university for a conference, so we decided to get out to enjoy some downtime with each other. Someone suggested Empire, and it was a great suggestion. They were able to accommodate our large party and provided us with friendly service. I did not stay long enough to enjoy all that I wanted to enjoy, but here is what I will say about what I did have: "Strawberry Kiss:" This gin-based drink is tasty and refreshing. They use prairie gin which is very juniper-forward, so if that's not your thing, be sure to ask for a different gin. New School Sour: We had a designated driver who requested a non-alcoholic beer. She kept raving about it, so I knew I needed to try it. It is the best-tasting non-alcoholic brew I have ever had. It had a hoppy taste but was light and crispy. We ordered Empire Tots and Dirty Chips for the table. The tots were more like potato balls instead of regular tots. The sunny-side-up egg on top was a little weird but overall added tremendous flavor to the tots. The chips were SO good. We thought they were going to be spicy because of the buffalo, but they were not. Everyone seems to love the Fried Doughnuts, so we ordered those for the table, too. They were warm, and crisp on the outside, but nice and fluffy on the inside. They came with a side of crème anglaise for dipping, but we honestly did not need it. The doughnuts were so good that I ordered a bag to go LOL. PS: Everyone said the burgers were pretty good. This was a wonderful rooftop experience. Beautiful sunny day and the staff were all friendly and helpful. I liked that the music wasn't too loud and it was fantastic music too. The star of the meal for me was the fried donuts and poutine fries with cheese curds. Burger wasn't anything to shout about but still delicious. We will definitely be back !! The service here is pretty terrible and the food is just okay. We were put on a waitlist and sat at the bar while we waited for a table. The bartenders were not very attentive and one of them actually took a menu while I was looking at it and pointing something out to my sister, who was next to me, and gave it to the young girls sitting next to us. When we were seated we were given water and then did not see the server for a while. When she came back, we ordered drinks and empire tots. The tots came out, but we were not given plates or silverware to eat them with. Someone came out with plates, but we did not have anything else. We waited for a bit- the tots getting cold- but nobody came afterward. We eventually had to go ask one of the many staff members idly congregated in the corner for silverware and napkins; when we were given them we were told they did not have any knives. Soon after, our server came back and we asked for knives. Miraculously she found them almost immediately. We placed our orders. The food came out and it was good enough, but not great. I can't find a reason to return aside from the fact that they have a rooftop patio, which might be nice on a sunny day before you realize you'd still have to deal with mediocre service at both the bar and the restaurant tables. read more

Not a bad place to grab a burger and a beer. Good location with fair prices for the area. Service was hit or miss guy was nice enough but didn't make adjustments to order and we had to flag him down to get refill of water and beer/cocktails. Also be warned .50 for a side of ranch. Pro tip get the chips instead of fries. read more
