This review is for takeout. Taku Sando has been on my list for a while now and one afternoon I decided to order two sandwiches to split with my husband. While delivery was crazy late...we were not disappointed with both the portion sizes and decadence in flavor. Wow, were both sandos good. We got the chicken katsu sando and the egg salad sando with onsen egg and both were delicious. Can't wait to try this spot out in-person!
I was excited to try Taku Sando, and it did not disappoint. We walked in and ordered at the front. The staff were so kind and greeted us. They were patient with our order, and we got the food in about 10 minutes. The space has indoor and outdoor seating, both were so beautifully decorated and comfortable. The bathroom even has a bidet! In terms of the food, that chicken katsu sando was the BEST sando I have ever had. Hands down beats every other sandwich I have ever ate. The meat was tender, juicy, crispy. The cabbage slaw was crunchy without being too saucey, letting the natural flavors of each component really shine. I love how soft the bread is, and especially how the sandwich was served hot! Most places have it cold, but I prefer this much better. The tamago sando was good too, but it was pretty standard. I would definitely come back for that chicken katsu sando again!
Really enjoyed this katsu sando spot! Been meaning to try and the past 2 times they had pretty long lines so I didn't end up going. Was free Friday before dinner time and there were no lines! I wanted to try the chicken over the pork. The chicken wasn't dry and the sauce was very subtle. The sando wasn't oily and I reaalllly liked their bread! My friend had the pork katsu and I didn't like that as much because it had a meatier taste. Next time I'd def want to try their egg sando though!
It has been a few days since I ate here and I still cannot stop thinking about the pork katsu sandwich. The portion size was generous, with a crispy exterior, a juicy center, and soft, delicate bread. I am honestly still salivating just thinking about it. The only thing I wish it had was a bit of acidity to cut through the richness. Aside from that, the sandwich was absolutely divine, and I had no trouble finishing it even though I was completely stuffed. You order at the front, receive a buzzer, and then find your seat. There are three seating options to choose from: indoor seating, a covered outdoor area, and a fully outdoor section. We chose the covered outdoor area since I did not want to leave smelling like food from sitting inside. I cannot wait to come back and try more items on the menu!
My brother had bought a couple sandos back home to try including the chicken katsu, ton-katsu, egg, and the potato korroke sando. To my surprise, my favorite one was the potato korroke. The chicken and pork katsu was a little too dry for my tasting. The egg one wasn't as flavored as I hoped - definitely not Japan 7/11 flavored (I miss this one so much). All of this could be due to the fact that I had it cold. I hope to go to the location myself next time to have it fresh! Portions were huge and there were good amount of filling for each bite!
Tried this spot recently and we all loved the ton-katsu sando, the milk bread was squishy, the pork was crispy, and the sweet sauce and crunchy veggies were nice counterpoints. I think it could have had a tiny bit more flavor in the breading or sauce, a little kick or savoriness here and there would have elevated it even more. The back patio is so nice, with a good amount of seating and cute little benches with cushions. The food came out pretty quickly and was fairly priced for a substantial meal. I'd go back to try those fries!
Great portion sizes and amazing flavors!! We got the pork and chicken to try which were both amazing. But if I had to choose one I would do the pork. We were definitely stuffed after from all the food. Decor inside was also super aesthetic and had an outdoor area of sitting too which was nice. Got lucky because by the time we left there was a huge line out the door to order. Would definitely come back here !
The smell of fresh, warm milk bread wafts out from the inside of the store, enticing passers by such as myself. Came by on a Saturday around 12:30pm and luckily, there was barely a wait. The staff were all smiles and welcoming. I was a bit hesitant given similar sandwiches are available at other places for a much lower pricepoint, but the sandos here are HUGE and quite worth the price. Taku Sando does not skimp on their fillings. The bread is fluffy, the katsu is crisp and plentiful, the tamago mix isn't too rich, and the matcha cream with the strawberries are divine. The sandos make for a perfectly substantial grab-and-go lunch, and I'd love to come back to try their other varieties!
Got the Tamago Sando here and I thought the prices were reallyyy expensive for sandos. However, the portions are pretty generous and they do fill up the sandwich. With my sandwich, I feel like they almost put half a dozen eggs in there and even though I split the sandwich, I still felt a bit egged out after. I thought the ambience was really cute as you can go to the back and eat and they have a camping area with snow peak gear. Everything felt really cozy and intimate.
Tonkatsu Sando here is phenomenal -- always enjoyed a good katsu and this place was right up there with the best of em. Generous helping of Pork stacked on a nice pile of cabbage, covered in the right amt of that special sauce, sandwiched between two heavenly slices of milk bread. When you first unwrap this thing, you'll say to yourself.. "no way I'm finishing this" or maybe "let me clear me calendar rest of the day" .., but I was actually surprised at how easily I was able to finish it, and how together the sandwich kept! (Really not much mess) -- the challenge here probably isn't finishing the Sando ... it's NOT finishing the Sando once you start .. it's so tasty, good luck stopping ... Outside has a little porch area and inside is roomy, but I enjoyed watching them making the sandwiches behind the counter
Food: I got a tonkatsu sando and ramen egg sando. I also got a chance to try to potato korokke sando and dashi furikakke ribbon fries. Of course, the bread was so good with its soft pillowy texture and nostalgic mellow sweet flavor. The tonkatsu sando was heft with intertwining layers of fried pork cutlet goodness. So juicy and meaty. The thinly sliced layer of cabbage really helped to cut the fattiness of the tonkatsu giving all a good balance. The egg sando had silky, creamy egg oozing from the innards. However, it was a bit disappointing as I was hoping the egg salad portion would have been better seasoned (sorry, Japanese 7/11 still hits harder). The korokke was surprisingly delcious with its light batter coating a light potato innards making for a toothsome bite. The ribbon fries were okay. It reminded me of those spiral potatoes you get at the fair. Unfortunately, they came a bit on the colder, softer side. Service: It was fast and appreciate the buzzer system. Friendly enough Ambiance: it's a relatively small place. I love the almost camping-like dining area set up that have outside. The open kitchen is cool to see as well.
I just don't get the hype...it's ok but would not wait in line or come here often. The pork tong-katsu sandwich was not enjoyable. The meat was very chewy and lacked much flavor. The bread was soft and like putty, which most people seem to love but I will pass. The pork overwhelmed the bread, and I was not able to chew through part of the meat without using my hands to help rip it. The matcha-strawberry sandwich was much better, it was the right blend of sweet and refreshing! It also looked very unique and unlike most other sandwiches. Def take a pic for Instagram! The ambiance was ok, it was compact and had small seating areas which are very typical of Tokyo cafes. There was a backyard which seems nice in spring/summer but was chilly for us in November. The service was fast and polite, which was impressive during a weekend rush.
Who wouldn't want a fried piece of meat on milk bread? Sadly, this place wasn't all I thought it could be. Each katsu sando was 16 dollars. The chicken was better than the pork but both were fried to the point of dryness that I couldn't really distinguish the taste between the meat. You really only taste the wasabi sauce. Also, if they cut the meat a little thicker, it may help bring out the natural flavor of the meat more. Instead it's kind of like a thin cardboard size slab of chicken and pork. Overall, not worth the trip to even try once. Though their backyard was a nice surprise. read more

Delicious katsu sandos! The bread was soft and pillowy while the tonkatsu was perfectly fried. We got the tonkatsu and chicken sandos- I would have to say the chicken one was slightly juicier and the pickles added a nice touch. The dashi furikake ribbon fries were perfectly seasoned- this is a must get. Probably my favorite thing here. Lastly, we got the yuzu ale which was very refreshing. Overall, the food, service and ambiance was great. They had a nice cozy outdoor patio in the back. Note we did have to wait ~30 minutes for our sandwiches on a Saturday after, but we just went to walk along the water. read more
We tried the tonkatsu sando and the chicken sando, and both were perfectly crispy and full of flavor, especially with the sando sauce. The vegetables inside added a nice balance to the dish. We also got the fries (not pictured), which had a unique cut and were delicious. The prices felt fair--each sando was $16, the fries were $8, and we also ordered a yuzu drink for $6, which was refreshing. I'd definitely recommend this spot to anyone craving these flavors! read more
Really great sandwich with a generous slab of meat. We all got the tonkatsu sandwich and really enjoyed it. Very flavorful! My only gripe is that some of the bread got soggy quickly due to the cabbage slaw. The fries were very interesting! I didn't feel like the dashi furikake flavor was strong at all though, but the texture was so cool and the portion was SO generous. A bit of a messy meal, puts you in a food coma. But yum! Incredible sando! It seemed like forever since the sign has been up for awhile and the rest of the block has already been populated with great restaurants, but they finally opened their doors for takeout today. We tried the delicious egg salad sando and the even better Chicken Katsu Sando. The fries are also excellent, that style where they spiral a whole potato into thin, crispy chips. Can't wait to come back for the pork, potato, and everything else. read more
The wait in line was long for sure, especially since I went during the weekend. It was around 4:30 PM, and I probably waited 30 minutes in line and 20 minutes for the food. There was surprisingly plenty of seating, especially outside. I rarely prefer outdoor over indoor seating, but their outdoor seating made it feel like I was at someone's backyard party. It was a cute and homey set up. Was it worth the wait? The Ton-Katsu Sando reminded me of the 7-Eleven tonkatsu sandwiches I've had in Japan, so I would say yes just because of sentimentality. The tonkatsu was perfectly crisp and balanced well with the amount of cabbage. Because of the sauce, the flavor was rich. Personally, I felt like the meat or overall portion size could have been increased slightly for the price, and I felt like that was especially true for the Chicken-Katsu Sando. The chicken sando felt overpowered by the flavor of the sauce, since there wasn't enough meat in each bite. I'm not expecting double the portion, just enough to have some chicken in each bite. Rating 8.3/10 So glad to have another sando place in NYC, and this place is of course making their bread in house and selling it as whole loaves as well. I had the chicken katsu sando, my personal go to and it was really delicious; the bread was super soft and did not get soggy, the katsu was crunchy, hot, fresh, and tender/juicy. Really really good, and worth a revisit. Another noteworthy dish is the dashi furikake fries, which are essentially ribbon fries dusted with a beautifully umami and aromatic seasoning. There are other flavors too, but this is a great addition to katsu sando and something most other places don't offer - i haven't seen it yet. What's a sandwich without something potatoey to go alongside it ? All in all, want to come back for their pork and egg sandos as well. Wishing this place a lot of success. read more

I love a good chicken or pork katsu sandwich! Unfortunately, Taku Sando didn't quite hit the mark. Ordered pickup and went in the store. It was a little chaotic and disorganized, I wasn't really sure where to wait for pick up so I got in line. I can accept some of the blame because I picked up the sandwich and drove 20 minutes back home before eating it, but I would say that's even less than delivery time so it should've held up. The taste was good, but unfortunately the bread was too soft and soggy by the time I was eating it. It kind of mushed into everything else and didn't maintain its structure. Didn't bother with the other menu items but honestly there wasn't much.. chips and salad? Meh. For the price I paid I think I'd rather go to Takahachi instead. Maybe it's better if you sit in the store and eat it immediately? But I likely wouldn't return unless I'm nearby and willing to dine in. read more
Quaint little Japanese joint serving tasty Katsu Sandwiches. Good vibe and good staff however a bit pricey imo. 2 sandwiches in white bread and a coke plus tip $45 is a bit high even for Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Location is great and right next to WNYC park where you get a great view of NYC skyline. read more

I came here on a Thursday around 3 PM and there was no line (I also went at a random time lol). I got everything on the menu and my favorite was definitely the chicken Katsu sandwich and absolutely get the fries! The egg sando was okay, nothing that was remarkable compared to the egg sandos I had in Asia. I think I would pass on the pork and potato moving forward. Inside there is plenty of seating as well as a little garden in the back with heated lamps. Wait time was about 20 minutes for us to get all our food. The restaurant is located in a very trendy location with lots to do. There's a plant store across the street and tons of little boutiques to shop at as well as a pier and a dog park at the end of the street. Overall, I would come back! read more
We visited taku sando around 12:45pm on a Saturday and there was a small line out the door. They're pretty quick to take your order, which is right by the entrance. I love their simple menu, which usually means they've perfected their craft There isn't a ton of seating indoors, but they have a backyard with very cute camping style seating, including a firepit and heaters! We only waited a little bit to grab seats indoors for the 4 of us -Tamago sando: I preferred this one over the katsu one. They make their bread in house and you can SMELL the goodness throughout. I like that the slices are on the thinner side, and they really pack the sandwich with egg salad. It's so soft and fluffy! and while I've never had an egg sando in Japan, I'm hoping it tastes like this or better - Pork katsu sando: Generous with the meats and I liked the kick of mustard mayo. I ended up getting full from the egg sando, so I only had a bite of this, but my husband liked both sandwiches equally - Ribbon fries with dashi furikake seasoning: super thin spriral potatoes! Not your average fries - I think I liked these better because they were so thin and crispy with a good amount of seasoning The sandos are pretty big! My Ton katsu Sando sandwich was good. It is pork but for some reason to me it taste like 85% chicken and also look like chicken texture wise but differently not. If you don't like the traditional looking pork that's dark and a lot of fat, I reccomend this sandwhich. They do have a chicken version also. It's bit pricey $16 but worth the try and I enjoy every bit of it. The sauce with it almost taste like bbq but is not. The cabbage inside does add a nice crunch to the sandwich too. I even shared half with my girlfriend and was ok. I didn't eat to be full but if I ate the whole thing I would be happy. The ice genmai matcha tea is light in flavor but my girlfriend loved it. I didn't like it as much because I like more sugar or things to be more heavily in ingredients. There is a outdoor back yard vibe at this place. Table is low but yea. Toilet seat inside restroom has so much buttons lol read more

Finally got to try this viral sando spot. This place was pretty crowded and seems popular. There was also a good amount of indoor and outdoor seating in the shop. I got the tonkatsu sando and the sando was super flavorful. The fried pork wasn't dry at all and it was very tender. Also, the portion of the sando was bigger than I expected. I was full after eating the first half. The ribbon fries were interesting. It was a mix between a chip texture and like a baked potato texture. The seasoning was pretty good. We got this special seasoning which gave it a spicy kick. There was a big portion of the ribbon fries which would be great for sharing. Overall I would come here again to try their other sandos. read more

I'm glad I finally got to try this place out. We came on a holiday weekday and it was pretty hectic. You order at the counter and are given a number. There's some seating inside but the backyard it's def the prime spot. It's a pretty cool setup with all the Snow Peak gear. Food took a while to be ready but that also gave us enough time to find seating. The sandwiches are pretty big. We ordered the pork and chicken katsu - both delicious! I love that they make their own shokupan. It really makes a difference. The chips were great, too! read more

Has an outdoor backyard space, making the restaurant dog friendly. Seating is first come first serve but I found turnover to be quick. Personally I enjoyed the chicken sando over the pork sando because it was easier to bite through. Kids who visit get a coin for the gacha machine to win a little prize. read more

After an extended hair appointment, I was hungry and in need of quick sustenance. The name Taku Sando stood out to me. In the corner of my mind, I remembered a tiktok where it talked about the Sandwiches from this place. So I decided to go there. This is a place that uses colors in their aesthetic so you are not getting just the black and white vibes. Even the utensils are colorful but the vibe is not overwhelming. I love the fact they have small items for sale in addition in cute colors like pens and stamps. They emphasize their sandwiches and wine. In terms of the latter, you can see bottles of wine next to the Knick Knacks they sell and a bunch of wine related drink options. The cashier is right when you enter which isn't a problem when it is not packed (it wasn't on a early Friday night) but could be a problem otherwise. In my order, I got the egg sandwich and a yuzu ginger ale (nonalcoholic). The yuzu ginger ale was refreshing and delicious with the balance of sweetness and tartness coming from the yuzu. When I saw the egg sandwich, I thought it was two small stacked on top of one another. But in actually it is more like a Big Mac as it is one sandwich with a piece of bread in the middle. They don't do the additional piece in the katsu sandwiches and I get a why because without it the egg salad would be a lot. The Japanese egg salad itself was creamy and they don't skimp on it. The Japanese milk Bread (shokupan) they bake is thin but fluffy to the taste. But for me, If i were to get the egg sandwich again, I would getting the ribbon fries. This would be to add more crunch to the dining experience since eating the egg salad by itself could be boring after a few bites. I would go for the Katsu options next time because they look so good. The toilet is heated and it may have bidet options which is always a nice touch. Overall with its relatively simple menu, I think this is an easy place to get a glass of wine and a nice lunch. read more

I was excited to try Taku Sando, and it did not disappoint! We visited on a weekend afternoon and had to wait in a short queue. Once at front, the staff were friendly and quick to take our orders. Most of the seating were located in the connected outdoor terrace. It was decorated with camping gear, so it felt like we were on a trip! We tried the Chicken Katsu Sando and the Pork Katsu Sando - one with the miso and the other with the house sauce. The miso I heard was a new addition to the menu, and was a little sweeter. I liked both (!), so if you are going with a group, I would highly recommend getting both options to try the different flavors. The milk bread (made in house!) was fluffy and the best part of the sandwich! The portions were very filling and we left feeling very satisfied. read more

Saw a youtuber eating here and katsu sando with homemade bread caught out attention. Nettled in Greenpoint neighborhood, this small but hip eatery is charming. We had to wait in line a bit but not too bad. Ordered their classic katsu (pork) sando and furitake flavored ribbon fries. Katsu sando was 3.5/5. Katsu was very thin and much smaller than the bread itself. It was not as crispy as i had hoped and my piece had a lot of tendons. Bread is really thin and moist and soft but held the pork pretty well. The cabbage was nicely seasoned but wished there was a bit more. The ribbon fries were not good. It was not crispy and soggy. Not really pleasant to eat and also had no flavor. Would not recommend getting this. Not sure i will ever come back to try other stuff. It was a bit disappointing. read more

Was excited to try this place! We waited about 15 mins on line on a late Saturday afternoon and then waited another 20 mins to get our food. The sandwiches were pretty good but it was a little dry. In my opinion, the chicken katsu sandwich was better than the pork. I would recommend this place but not sure if it'll be a repeat place to go to. read more

I came to learn of this place because of Instagram and the restaurant is cute I loved the outdoor space but the sandwiches weren't the best. We ordered one chicken and one pork sandwich and it looked and tasted exactly the same. Same bread, same shredded cabbage, same cutlet, same sauce and the same taste. The sea salt fries are like real potato chips and were quite tasty. The ginger ale is homemade and was really way better than the sandwiches. The woman who took our order was nice and explained the menu. Once you order you get a buzzer to let you know when to come back to the counter to pick up the food. I have to say, I don't think that I will be back personally. It's a lot of hype because of IG. read more
