This restaurant has an okay atmosphere and a great location in Summit, NJ where they will likely continue to do business. Unfortunately, that is all that can be said nice about this restaurant. The sushi portions were unbelievably small with barely enough rice under them. The prices were surprisingly high but quality did not match. The nori (seaweed) around the sushi rolls tasted cheap. Even the rice was not properly cooked (with hard grains in it) I am Japanese and their food was an embarrassment to Japanese restaurants everywhere. This is my favorite for sushi - when it comes to taste. They have the best specialty rolls like the dark angel roll. Choose any one of them - they're all delicious. I never get anything else from here. Five stars for the sushi! But, the service is just really terrible. It always makes me feel uncomfortable but I suck it up because my family enjoys eating at the restaurant as opposed to take out. I know it sounds harsh but one star for the service. It was really dark inside. My co-worker and I went for lunch. We ordered the two roll special. It came out to about $13.15 for me and a little less for hers. I got the salmon skin roll and the eel roll. It wasn't a lot of food, wasn't all that filling, but it's sushi in Summit, which is a wealthier neighborhood. They give you these cute little fruity gum boxes at the end, which I loved since I used to have them as a kid all the time. Cute place, but it didn't wow me. Went with a friend to Taka for a switch-up of the normal sushi spots I go to. I wasn't sure exactly what I was getting into, but the prices online looked pretty good and decided to give it a shot. I was pleased with the decision. Walked in and immediately observed that I shouldn't walk into the glass, which has a large sticker on it saying "NOT A GLASS DOOR!" Gotchya. My friend and I decided to sit at the bar since it wasn't too crowded (6pm on a Tuesday night) and our server came over immediately. Ordered the Dragon Roll ($11) and a regular Tuna Roll ($4) and both were very tasty. The staff was very helpful and actually gave us some suggested rolls, just in case we didn't want to look at the menu. Against my better judgement I decided to start giving Taka another try because they are about four blocks from me and the food is usually very good. I ordered two sushi rolls the other night and it took an HOUR. 4 blocks. Two rolls. And the roll I usually get was horrible. My review is for the lunch special during the week. I ordered the 2 sushi roll special (spicy tuna and yellowtail avocado rolll) which came with salad and miso soup which was nice since other restaurants only give you one or the other. My meal was good (sushi was fresh), but I've definitely had better sushi meals. I did like how I came with only one other person and they let us sit in a both which seats at least 6. There is a banner outside the restaurant that notes they are the #1 sushi place in northern NJ. Maybe they are, but I didn't notice anything that stood out. Based on other reviews, perhaps coming for dinner and doing BYOB, or ordering a special role makes this place great? For me, nothing really stood out. Im typically not the type of person to write a yelp review, mostly because I am the manager of a restaurant myself. I only write a review if I was extremely dissatisfied with my experience, or extremely happy, and I can say I was for sure dissatisfied today. My friend and I went for a late lunch in town, and we decided to go to taka. Ive ordered out from here a few times, and never had a problem. Today, we went around 1 o'clock. There was only one other table in the restaurant, and they were about done eating so we were the only ones there basically. We ordered, and I had asked if I was able to switch the white rice out for fried rice with my meal (hibachi chicken), and asked how much it would be. The waitress had no idea about anything, every question we asked, she had to go "ask a manager", she came back and told me that they didn't swap that out for a charge, that I would have to order a whole side of fried rice which was $10!! WHAT!! So i declined, my friend then went to order and she is allergic to shrimp and her meal came with shumai ( which is shrimp dumplings). She asked if she could just get pork dumplings instead, the waitress said yes. So now were sitting there for 10-15 minutes, and the waitress comes back over and says "I'm sorry but they just told me that they can't give you pork dumplings instead of shrimp you would have to order a whole things of dumplings, which is $8 extra"... now working in a restaurant this infuriated me. For someone who has an allergy you're not going to be willing to give them something else? What is the problem with making 2 pork dumplings instead of 2 shrimp dumplings. So then I asked what she could get instead of the dumplings and she said RICE OR VEGETABLES ... woah... now you're going to offer rice or vegetables, in substitution for SHRIMP? It felt like they were trying to suck our money out of us, and rip us off. At this point I'm very annoyed, my friend is too and she said she will take the rice. Our food comes out, I begin to eat my food, and the veggies are cold. Now seeing were the only table in there at this point, I'm just very confused why my plate is cold. Again like I said before, I'm typically not the person to complain, but I did. I asked to speak to a manager. A server came over, and told me the manager wasn't there... what do you mean the manager isn't there? There should be a manager on shift at ALL times (again I am a manager of a restaurant). So she asked me if I would allow them to re make my plate one more time, so I agreed. My food comes out again 5 minutes later, and it was luke warm, I think i would have been happier if they put it in the microwave. I just don't understand why my food came out 2 times cold/ luke warm. We usually get takeout and the sushi is always fresh and fairly priced. I am not a big fan of dining in at this restaurant. The room is very dark and if you sit in the front three waitresses continually stare at you while you eat. What up? Do you think I am George Clooney? Parking is not optimal. There are city lots, which will all be pay lots within a month. You could always just copy the Land Rover drivers and park wherever you want on the streets and put your hazards on. Just moved back to the area in december and discovered Taka Sushi the first week. Since then, we have eaten there every other week or so. Very friendly staff, great sushi and other dishes, casual, and kid friendly. It's BYOB also - which can save a lot on the bill. I've eaten at Taka many times, I love their food. I've eaten at a lot of sushi places in the area and in NYC, and Taka is one of the best. I consider it be a cheaper/closer Nobu (yes I believe it is that good). Several of their dishes that I really like are the rock shrimp, yellowtail jalapeno, chicken yaki udon. YUMM-MMY! My wife and I had dinner at TAKA Sushi last night, and it was excellent. We shared the "Taka combo for 2", (or something like that). I'm far from a sushi-pro. I've only started to eat it recently. However, I DO know seafood...and this was very very fresh, and deliciousness the two normally go hand in hand. The price seemed very reasonable as well. $40 for dinner for 2 is very fair, especially when it's BYOB! The combo came with miso soup and was delicious as well. The service was great as well. Very attentive, not overbearing, and very friendly. Even as the dinner crowd grew, our server's) were available at any moment. In fact, it was my go to spot but I have to edit my review to include something that has happened to me twice here now. After getting the bill and giving them my credit card, they tell me 1) their machine doesn't work or 2) they don't have chip capabilities and suggest I pay cash. The first time, albeit an awkward request, I had cash on me. The second time, they suggested I go to the bank down the street, which not only charged me a fee to use their ATM, but also a fee for using my card. I was upset they hadn't told me when I first came in, and since this has happened twice now, and they had sufficient time to update their systems, I will go elsewhere. The staff are very friendly and the salmon teriyaki lunch box is really good. The only thing i found disappointing was the sushi rolls.

Food was good. But a mouse ran across the floor during dinner and completely grossed me and my friends out. The waitstaff didn't even react. Didn't apologize. ..didnt even acknowledge the fact that we jumped up, screamed and basically left the restaurant because of this. Makes me think this is a regular occurrence. Gross! read more

Taka Sushi has a great ambiance and good service. We've only tried the raw, sushi entrees and rolls etc., but they also offer cooked hibachi, teriyaki dishes too. The sushi is some of the best town! Hadn't visit this restaurant in a while, sadly, things have gone downhill. Walked in there no one greets us there are two female workers just looking at us and actually seemed annoyed as if we just interrupted whatever they were doing. We get a table and we're just trying to settle, waitress asks right away if I want something to drink, come on gimme a minute to settle!! Well we start looking at the menu call waitress back and she comes to our table as if she was doing us a favor by taking our order. Got 3 sushi rolls which were tiny (but prices weren't) and a kids chicken teriyaki which was flavorless, ordered the salad that came with it and when the waitress brought she basically just threw it on the table along with a fork. She seemed annoyed the entire time, very rude, no manners at all.... don't think will be coming back anytime soon! read more

This has been the sushi place for my family for over 5 years. Consistent fresh sushi and other plates, friendly staff, and very nice owners. Beef Negamaki is an excellent and substantial plate for those who don't like fish. I'm not a huge sushi guy myself but I enjoy the other food that Taka has to offer. My fiance on the other hand loves sushi and says this place is the best in Summit by far. For my taste its a little bit on the pricey side and the wait staff could definitely be a bit more cordial and attentive but overall not a bad place. read more

Taka is our go-to sushi place, though it's starting to get a tad over-popular (I guess a good NYT review will do that). The sushi is always fresh, and the wait staff is friendly and attentive. The cooked and more traditional dishes are standard but good--yaki udon and hibachi are usual orders--but the gyozo and rock shrimp starters will keep you coming back. If you can, go during the week--weekends are filled with Summit's beautiful people and gum-chewing teens on dates. read more

Second visit and it only gets better. Apps: beef negamaki - the "in-between" scallions were super fresh and was not over cooked nor dry. Aged Fried Tofu - first thought? deep fried and overly battered.. boy, was I wrong! Lightly coated in panko, this delish squares are so delicate, it melts in your mouth!
