Ok, Ive noticed that all the cool kids on Yelp bash the sushi in Rochester. So, in an effort to be cool, I am going to preface my reviews of every sushi place by noting how much Rochester sushi sucks, and then expounding upon all of the places I've had sushi to show how worldly and cultured I am, thus giving my opinion on sushi more credence (in my own mind). Hopefully I can be one of the cool kids too! So here it goes: all Rochester sushi is horrible. I've had sushi in Japan while I was stationed with Greenpeace in the small coastal village of Kyagi. I've had sushi in Tokyo made by the most famous sushi chef in the world (waddup Morimoto-san!!!). I've had sushi in LA. I've had sushi in Boston in which, rather than seasoned rice vinegar, the rice was bathed in the tears of whiny Boston sports fans. I've had the freshest sashimi possible when I was a mercenary in South America while we were on Covert Ops and had to catch our own food from the ocean and couldn't start a fire for fear of revealing our location. So let me tell you, Rochester sushi sucks. Blah, blah *insert half-witted shot at Rochester here* blah, blah *cap it off with a pretentious, self-aggrandizing comment*. Aren't I the COOLEST? Seriously, though, Taka House is some good sushi. Not quite up to par with my favorite in Rochester, but it's close, and I will definitely be back. All of the rolls were constructed very well, and even though they were packed with ingredients and in some cases quite large, the rolls never were in danger of falling apart. The service was very good and friendly, and the chef and server thanked us repeatedly and were very gracious. It's nice to see that some restaurant owners still realize that customers are their bread and butter, and if you treat them well, they will return the favor. We ordered the following rolls: Christmas Roll: Crab, shrimp, avocado, mayo, masago, crunch, topped with pineapple, tuna, tobiko, and special sauce. A+ for presentation on this roll, it really was beautiful, and aptly named. All the colors of Christmas, along with a sprinkle of crispies around the roll to look like snow. It also was delicious to boot. Samurai Roll: crunch, spicy tuna, avocado with mayo and seared white tuna on top. Very good, the searing of the white tuna added just a touch of, for lack of a better term, smokey quality that was quite good. Probably my favorite of the four. Taka Dynamite Roll: Salmon, avocado, crab, asparagus deep fried with mayo and spicy sauce. I liked the different textures in this roll, and it was very tasty. American Dream Roll: Spicy tuna, salmon, yellowtail, masago, scallion, eel, shrimp, and avocado wrapped with fish cake and ponzu sauce. Very good, definitely would order again. The complimentary miso soup and/or salad that comes with ordering 4 rolls were good, but nothing remarkable, which is OK by me. Located in a small plaza. Plenty of seating, and ample parking. read more

This hasn't happened in a while, but I had an evening of dish envy when I ate at Taka House. My boyfriend and I hit up a new-to-us sushi place in Webster before a visit to the newly renovated AMC theater. Sushi was just what we were in the mood for. I was hungry and added an order of miso soup and the green salad with ginger dressing as an appetizer. It was the perfect start to my meal. The miso soup was so comforting and the broth wasn't too salty topped with crisp scallions. Just what I needed after a week with a sore throat. The ginger salad was (and is anywhere you get it) a straightforward dish. Romaine/iceberg with ginger dressing. Truthfully, I just wanted a taste of that dressing. The salad may have been overwhelmed by it, so I had to shake some off the lettuce. ($2 for the soup and $2.50 for the salad). Worthwhile. Here's where I went wrong, I ordered a super fancy roll - the Angel Roll. All the ingredients sounded delicious and it seemed like my belly was in the mood for it. Once I got the dish it was intense. The roll was piled with tempura crunch, which I subtlety pushed aside on the plate. There also was a smidgen too much spicy mayo. Loved the flavor, just too much of it for me that evening. So I also scraped a bit of that off. Then I had the good stuff - the roll had shrimp, spicy tuna, avocado. The roll was huge, and tasty, don't get me wrong. I just realized as I was eating it that I really was wishing for the simple sashimi appetizer and spicy tuna roll that was set across from me. Sometimes I dream too big when it comes to food and think more, more, more! In this case, implement KISS (keep it simple stupid). Taka does a sashimi dish well. Willy's favorite was the yellowtail and the spicy tuna roll was ideal to finish things off, topped with a dash or two of sesame seeds. The restaurant is quaint, tastefully decorated with Japanese art and mini-posters depicting the different types of sushi at each table/booth (helpful for the newbies). Service was timely and our server (perhaps one of the owners) was darling. I'd love to sit at the sushi bar next time to see the sushi chef at work. read more

Taka House - Angel roll - tuna, shrimp, avocado... - Sushi Bars Near Me - Webster, New York

I love Taka House because they have a ton of delicious sushi fare at a reasonable price for what you get. Located on Ridge Road, they're located in a plaza, so parking can be a challenge on weekends, especially since they share the lot with Hooligans and Painting With a Twist. Inside, the vibe is quiet and clean. The staff are all very polite and helpful. I usually feel more attended to at Taka House than I do at many other restaurants. The prices aren't cheap, but what you get for the price makes it a great value. There's a trend with new restaurants where they'll charge you $10 for a plate of 4 "artisan" dumplings. Not here. It's just good, traditional sushi and Japanese food. I'm okay with paying a little more if I get a lot for it. Their bento boxes are a great example. You get an entree, like chicken teriyaki; a serving of white rice; miso soup; green salad with ginger dressing; tempura veggies and shrimp; an appetizer, like beef negimaki or shrimp shumai; plus a full-size sushi roll. All for $22. That's a lot of bang for your buck. The food is delicious, too! I'm a big fan of ginger dressing, and while I'd agree that they overload their salads with it, I'm not above mixing it with white rice to get the most out of it. Their teriyaki sauce is the perfect combination of savory and sweet, likely because all teriyaki dishes come with slow sauteed onions for a really great flavor. The tempura batter isn't overly oily, but didn't come out quite as crisp as I'd expected. They also offer veggie options for those who don't eat meat, like teriyaki tofu. I'm not a huge fan of silken tofu, but they got a nice crispy batter on it when I ordered, which made it worth my time. The sushi tastes fresh and they offer a great mix of unique and traditional rolls, as well as veggie options. Taka House is a great choice for sushi/Japanese food in Webster. Went back to Taka House last night and had another excellent meal and experience. Service was top-notch again and the sushi was excellent and deliciously fresh and well-prepared. Taka House has the best sushi I've ever eaten, made to order right in front of you! The Samurai Roll is our absolute favorite with the spicy scallop roll coming in second. The tempura shrimp and vegetables are outstanding, along with the fried rice. They have a great ginger dressing for the salad and delicious miso soup as well. This is, by far, the best sushi in or around Rochester, NY. I love sushi, eat all of it (sashimi, specialty rolls, tobiko, roe, and even uni) a few times a week. At Taka, the family staff is always welcoming. The environment is tranquil and pleasant. Always quiet. The presentation is superb. It makes you want to take home a picture and hang it as art. Came here while in the Webster area with my boyfriend hearing many good things about it and decided to give it a try. We had high hopes, especially for our love of sushi. The service was very nice and fast. And the place is decorated in Japanese decor, with a low noise level. When we first looked at the menu we saw that many things were a lot cheaper than other Japanese restaurants. And they also had different things. For example the soft shell crab. It is battered and fried served with soy sauce. It comes with a good amount for $8. Their sunomono is different, it has salmon, crabstick, cucucmber, shrimp, and some sort of white fish. For my main course I had gotten the seafood udon. It didn't taste like nabeyaki udon from any other place, it reminded me of more of a tom yum soup. It was filled with squid, catfish, crabstick, and bamboo. Very nice and filling. I also tried the bubble gump roll, which is pretty much double shrimp! Its shrimp tempura and cream cheese with avocado and shrimp on top with eel sauce. I would recommend it. Their sushi sashimi combo is like any other place. Nothing spectacular about it. Just good. But I noticed that their salmon isn't as bright of an orange, it didn't taste old or anything but I've never seen it that pale before. The food was delicious! I went for a mid-afternoon lunch with my boyfriend and coworker. The service was quick and courteous. The choices were fairly varied and well done. I ordered a dinner for two with my boyfriend which included 4 rolls and any choice of soup or salad. The only thing that annoyed me a little was that it said any choice of soup or salad but they meant one or the other of miso soup or the garden salad. They also charged you separately for each roll you ordered SK I'm not sire how that's a deal or special. The food was quickly prepared and beautifully done and I would certainly go there again. Quaint, authentic, and delicious. There is one sushi chef whom I assume is the owner and he makes everything fresh to order. Not limited to sushi though...many other Japanese staples on the menu as well. The presentation is also excellent...Taka House is the real deal when comes to authentic Japanese cuisine. Taka House has become our go-to for sushi in Rochester. The rolls are always fresh and while we have our favorites, we have never been disappointed by trying something new on the specialty roll menu. We have tried several sushi restaurants throughout the state and NYC, but Taka House holds the top spot on our list. Even though the sushi is reason enough for our continued return, both the atmosphere and great service enhance the experience. Very good and better than expected sushi on my first visit to Rochester/Webster. Excellent selection of rolls and premium rolls, although the rolls are slightly smaller than those I've had in LA. Great service and helpful recommendations, and tables are turned over quickly to keep the wait at a minimum. The King Crab roll was my favorite, but all the others we ordered were all a close second. meh I came by for lunch on a Friday. One other person in the restaurant. I had the sushi appetizer which consisted of 5 or 6 Nigiri pieces. The sushi was pretty decent however the Tempura Udon I ordered was really pretty sub par. The udon was basically a simple dashi broth with absolutely no body. Noodles, scallions and ??Cilantro??. Oh and the bowl was square with a metal spoon instead of the standard Chinese ceramic (I'm being an Udon snob I know, but it bugged me). Will stick with Shiki. read more

First time visiting Taka House. Came with an appetite and was looking forward to trying the sushi. I ordered the King Crab Lobster Roll and fried rice. Although the service was fast and the staff friendly I was not impressed with my selection. The fried rice was bland with egg, carrot shavings and corn. Yes, I said corn. Good sushi and service. This is a seat yourself, low key type of place. I have been at a variety of different times and it is never busy.

Have eaten here twice in the past week, as I'm in town for business and couldn't find too many choices for sushi. I'm not big on rolls, preferring a la carte negiri and sashimi. The seafood choices were limited, as they tend to be in many of the myriad sushi/Asian combo restaurants in the U.S. As most people should realize, virtually all sushi served in the U.S. is previously frozen. Here, some of the fish in the sushi refrigerator/case was still in its original freezer packaging - kind of ruins the illusion of "fresh" sushi... There was no Toro, Uni, or Amaebi, this despite the first two being listed on the menu. I got the impression that these items were very seldom available. Still, the chef and staff were polite, and the sushi I had was quite good, and simply but artfully presented. I would not hesitate to recommend or to eat here again, but I suppose I'm spoiled for more adventurous and diverse sushi selections. read more

This place is OK. My favorite Japanese restaurant in Rochester is Shiki. If I am in Webster and I would like to eat Japanese food then I would come back to this place. I came with an hour and a half before closing and I was the only table. The food was not that bad it was pretty good but could have been better along with the atmosphere. We were told "We don't have anymore seats" when we walked through the door. Yes the restaurant was busy but we were basically told "get out" seeing as there wasn't an open table at 7:30 well before the restaurant was closed. Oddly enough the bar did have seats open. I was in the mood to try a new Sushi place and this one caught my eye since it's right next door to one of my new favorites, Mona Lisa Cafe. This is a quaint Japanese steakhouse that has both Hibachi and a sushi bar. When we went there, there was a sushi chef and our waitress. I'm not sure, but I believe they're a couple and this is a family-run business. The waitress was *very* attentive to our needs! She came around just the right amount of time (not too much, not too little). We never had to wait long for anything, especially drink refills. They had a special for 2 people, buy 4 rolls of sushi and get salad or soup included. My wife and I got that and both chose the ginger dressing salad, which was great! The sushi was very good! Decently priced and well made. I thought there was plenty of fish in the sushi. I was satisfied with it. We'll definitely stop by again to try the Hibachi sometime. read more

I was super pleased with this sushi restaurant- it was close to where I lived, was accommodating for special requests and was super fast. The couple of times I have been they were able to make a wide variety of rolls with high quality fish and service. Only complaint is they have a smaller menu than others in the area, but they do each roll with high quality. I would definitely return. read more

I went here with two coworkers for lunch on a Tuesday. Both myself and a coworker ordered the spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls and it came with a ginger dressing tossed salad, the other ordered a salmon bento box. Every place I've ever been at that serves this has their own approach to the ginger dressing, either because they make it themselves or buy from a different vendor. It was fine, not bad, but slightly separated as the ginger mostly stayed on top and the liquid was at the bottom of the bowl. The food came out in a reasonable amount of time, there was 3 other tables that sat down when we did. The spicy salmon is cooked and shredded and put in sushi rolls and the tuna is traditional as expected. Because they use the same sauce, used generously, I had a hard time know which roll was which. I have no major complaints except for the fact the sushi rolls were extremely loose (not sticky rice?) and fell apart easily when dipped and this was true for all 5 rolls that were on our table. The taste was decent, not noteworthy. I wouldn't bend over backwards to go again but it's fine for the price. I have read the other reviews here and I find some of them way too optimistic and a couple reviews were concerning. I actually think I had a good experience there but anybody who thinks this place is some 5 star place may need to think again. read more
