I am giving my review strictly from a takeout standpoint. I will say we have ordered takeout from Sushi King over 6 times and can speak to the consistency of the food you are getting. We have gone inside and met the staff when picking up our food. It is a family owned business. The family is very friendly and welcoming. Taking a star off because the food often does take a long time to be ready. A couple of times we have be told the food will be ready at a specific time and end up waiting at least 30 mins past. The wait for the food is really my only complaint as the sushi is consistently fresh and delicious. I have never had a bad experience with the sushi. The prices are also affordable. You get fresh quality sushi rolls for less then the price of Wegmans to go sushi (and superior quality imo) Will have to stop in for a dine in experience one of these days. read more

My friends and I love Sushi King! They are always accommodating when we have a big group, we take up the whole place. I've done plenty of take our orders as well. My go to is the sushi sashimi for 2, $46 for a platter of 10 pieces of sushi, assorted sashimi, and 2 rolls. Such a great deal. They sashimi is always fresh. It also comes with a side salad and miso soup. We absolutely love this. I've tried other pieces of sushi off friends plates and haven't had a bad one yet. 4.5 stars. Very good sushi place in such an unassuming little town. Was able to find seating right away on a weeknight. Tried the sushi for two which included 20 pieces of sushi and two rolls. This came with miso soup and salad to start the meal with the combo. The slices of fish were very thin but they were expertly cut and long. There was a good variety of different types of fish and everything tasted remarkably fresh. Something we didn't know (and we didn't ask since it was a hot day) is there is free hot black tea or green tea which is another perk. Also tried the tempura banana and it was a surprisingly tasty dessert: not too oily. OMG - OMG - OMG I don't know where to begin or what to say but OMG BEST SUSHI PLACE and not just in Rochester but the BEST SUSHI PLACE EVER. My boyfriend (who I turned into a sushi snob as well) and I ordered 3 rolls - all 3 we both rated a 10! I was shocked, bewildered and amazed and my taste buds in glory. After every bite my boyfriend kept yelling to the sushi chef best sushi ever, yeah man, wow so good, etc... The place is very very small and is run by a husband and wife team and sometimes their daughter helps waitress. Because they are so small and don't have that many people working there the service is slow ! And when I say slow it is SLOOOOOW! Does not matter how many people are there you will be waiting forever for anything. Get a water pitcher, order rolls all at once, and if want more than one drink order them at the same time. But it doesnt matter its worth waiting 5 hours for the rolls. We also ordered crunchy porcupine appetizer - very different and delicious. My boyfriend also ordered the noodles as well which he said were the best he has had in Rochester as well. Second time here we got their popular bento box with chicken Katsu and beef teriyaki which was an amazing price. The teriyaki beef was out of this world cooked to perfection.. the chicken katsu on the other hand wasn't very good and not comparable to the katsu I am used to but I am used to Hawaiian Katsu not Japanese. This place is the best sushi I've had in Rochester. It's also the slowest. It's not the server, it's the kitchen. As long as you accept the speed of service you will get a very good meal. We started with the tempura vegetables, perfectly cooked and flavorful, plus the calamari. The calamari and the sauce were very tasty, but it was a little overdone. For rolls we got the Farmer and the Dream. Both were fresh and excellent. While we were eating a woman came in looking for her takeout order. I met a friend here for dinner on a Tuesday after she had recommended it based on a previous visit. She warned me that the last time she came it was on a Friday and it took over an hour to get their food, but today we didn't have any issues. Probably because it was a Tuesday. Anyway, the restaurant is small-ish so I could see how it could get crowded on a busy night. I ordered the chicken gyoza and beef negimaki apps and both were good. I especially liked the gyoza; the portion was very generous for only $4.95 (8 pieces). The negimaki was pretty good but I wished it had a bit more flavor. I also got the Dream roll and chicken fried rice. The rice was absolutely delicious. Lots of flavor and a good sized portion. The Dream roll was exactly that! It had crab, cream cheese, green onions, and a few other ingredients that I can't remember. It was also tempura fried. I told my friend it was a "gluttony" roll because it was so decadent and indulgent! Highly recommend it if you wanna treat yo' self. Overall I really liked the food here. The prices were fair and the portions nice and big. I would probably recommend going on a week day if you don't want an extended wait. Unknown gem alert!! I've driven by this place so many times and didn't even notice it, it's just a very small establishment with a couple employees behind the sushi bar. This does result in a little bit of a longer wait time, like when you go in for a table be prepared to be there for awhile. But the sushi is so delicious , fresh, and authentic. Family run business as we saw the whole family at the restaurant working. Portion sizes are large so even though they are expensive we had leftovers & were able to get 2 meals out of each entree. Service was a little slow but they were pretty busy with to go orders but I feel like they should not neglect customers that are dining in due to this. We had soda to drink & the tops of the cans were extremely dirty. I always have disinfectant wipes on hand as we had our baby with us so I used those to clean the tops. But please be aware what you hand your customers because that was a big turn off to receive 2 very dirty cans of soda. I totally get that a lot of places are short-staffed right now. I sat down at 6:15pm with a party of 4 on a Wednesday night and there were 3 other tables (party of 1 and two other couples). It looked pretty slow so tbh I thought the service was going to be great as they had 2 servers covering 4 tables. A server didn't come to our table until 6:30 to get our drink orders so we put our dinner order in while we had her. At 7:15 we finally got our side salad and miso soup that came with our bento box. At 8:15 we had still not receive our entrees so we told them we wanted everything to go. They didn't pack our dinner order to go until 8:25 and they screwed up our orders. Ahh, just what I wanted after nine long months without and thankfully, Sushi King did not disappoint. SK is one of the places that has the best fish all around as far as quality, taste, and portion. We ordered the Sushi for Two which comes with the usual miso soup and salad with ginger sauce for both of us as well as an array of various nigiri (a healthy slab of fish on top of rice). The fish just melted in my mouth like ice cream on a hot day. That's what I'm talking about! The chef has a unique way of cutting the fish as all of the pieces had extended "heads and tails" if you will, so you get more fish than rice. The dish also included the Fantastic roll and Eel Special roll - both delicious. The fish was 5 stars! I did not rate 5 stars for two non-food related reasons: service and parking. There was only one table, who finished their meals already, when we walked in. Now our dish was big so I understand that it took time to prepare and carefully cut and arrange the fish, but it took way too long for our soup and salad to come out. Also, it was my first time going there and I didn't know where to park. The building is on the corner of a busy intersection so I couldn't lollygag around in my car looking for the lot. I thought there was an alley way right next to the building on 441 that led to the parking lot in the back, but it was not. The waitress said there are two entrances to the back lot - one at the pizza shop on 441 and the other is behind the building on Five Mile Line Rd. Do you like watching people eat? Then this is your place. This might be on the kitchen, not the server. 40 minute wait for my wife and daughter's meals. 60 minutes for my son and me. That means the boys got to watch the girls eat. That also means that, after the girls were finished, they got to hang around and wait for us to get served and then watch *us* eat, which we did very quickly out of consideration for them. Sushi isn't a kind of food I like to gulp down. The restaurant was empty. During our meal, there was only one other table occupied, and we were there a *while*. There were a total of two takeout orders picked up while we were there. They were not busy. The sushi was good, not any better than other places around town with reasonable service. And like I said, maybe this is the kitchen and not the server, but the result for paying diners is the same: it sucked. We go out to eat to eat *together*. If you serve half the table a full 20 minutes before the other half, you have completely failed us. Not a word of apology or explanation from the staff. They don't care. One star might seem harsh since the food was good, but with service like that, there's no way we're ever coming back. Went on a Friday night, small place with under 10 tables. So, for the positive, the sushi was decent. Not great, not terrible. Regarding previous reviews, it is not on par with sushi in any major city so adjust your expectations. Now, for the negative, the service is terrible and unorganized. Waited 15 min to be asked for a drink order, gave it and then poof, nothing. Had to ask after 20 min and watching other tables get theirs and it came. Never asked for refills. Ordered two appetizers and 6 rolls. Apps didn't come out or came out well after the rolls. Usually works the other way around. Arrived at 7, didn't leave till 830 and the order wasn't even complete. It's sushi, it's not a fine dining experience so that's way too long. Also, the rolls came out randomly, not all together and sometimes after others orders from tables that arrived after us. That's a first for me but hey, whatever. The staff did adjust the bill and removed the items that were missing or came late. Sushi King is a small mom n pop sushi restaurant. It is labeled as a small plates restaurant. This means that plates are made one at a time and are served in the order that they were placed; meaning that your food will come out when it is ready. If your an impatient person; Its your own fault if you go here and can't enjoy your experience. The sushi here is Fantastic. Its fresh, it looks amazing, all the fish that is being picked out for the restaurant looks amazing, and is being maintained at the proper temperatures. The staff is as kind as you are to them. The main sushi chef here makes all the sushi himself. It's definitely one of the better sushi places in the area and is affordably priced, especially at lunch when their specials are available. I highly recommend this place if you are not an impatient, disgruntled, petty human.
