Good place for sushi. I came here Friday evening (Valentines day) around 5:30pm, and the restaurant was half full. The decor really gave the Japanese vibe. The restaurant only has 1 chef and 1 waitress at the time I came, so the waiting time for table, got order and food was served was 30 minutes or so. The restaurant was packed shortly after I got my table, and take-out ordered kept coming, to the point chef couldn't take anymore orders. I got dinner combo, which 4 rolls sushi and 2 salad. Sushi was great. The ginger salad dressing is not bad as well, but definitely can be improved. After having a not-so-great experience the last time, I happened to be in the area and decided to stop by 4 years later. I immediately recognized Taka/the owner behind the sushi counter. I was immediately greeted and sat and wanted just a quick bite. I ordered a few starters, ikura (salmon roe) and hotate (scallop) nigiri. Both were excellent and fresh. I walked up to the counter and asked Taka if he had any specials that were not listed on the menu such as uni (sea urchin). He said he did have sea urchin that day and I opted in for a couple of orders. The uni was fresh and tasted great. After my starters, I opted in for the chirashi which is an assortment of fish on a bed of sushi rice. All the fish tasted fine, I found they were sliced in odd shapes but that didn't take away the dish. I personally did find the rice to be under-vinegared but that's a personal preference. Overall, a good experience and my original 2/5 is now a 4/5. I'd stop back in if I were in the area. read more

Back to the Taka House, this time for dinner. The food is just as good. Four of us ordered a Love Boat for 3, a Vegetable tempura, a salmon teriyaki dinner and the Bento A. That was a lot of food. The Bento A amount was enormous! The service needs improvement, there is only one wait person, when we got there helped ourselves with napkins and chopsticks. Pretty good Japanese food! Came here with a party of three. Wasn't too busy and we were immediately served. Staff was friendly. They both got sushi and I got Bento box B. Struggled between 3 and 4 stars here, since the sushi truly was decent! In a pinch and on the way home from Webster, I might consider ordering from here again. We went with the sushi deluxe (12 sushi pieces/tekka roll/soup/salad), a spicy tuna roll, and gyoza. Prices are TOTALLY reasonable which is another big win here. $40 with tip for a lot of food, and everything tasted fresh. The problems are with ordering, the restaurant itself, and variety. When I arrived to pick up my takeout order, my masked jaw fell to the floor. Every table that wasn't housing diners was absolutely dirty/covered in food, there were three parties waiting to be helped, and the woman taking orders was running around and shouting demands at people waiting for takeout orders. The folks making sushi were also taking dine in orders and attempting to get ahead of bussing tables. It was a Saturday night and they were clearly understaffed, since at 6:30pm there were only ~6 parties there for dine in, and they were completely overwhelmed. When we got home, I was surprised to see that out of 12 nigiri pieces, only one was salmon. The soup was fine and the dressing was a-okay, I was just surprised by the sushi that was featured. Not docking them really here, since you get what you get when ordering this way. I would look forward to trying some other menu options here, but it is tough to imagine it being great given the dirty dining room/so much food sitting out, and a back kitchen they were very keen on keeping covered up. Don't judge a book by its cover bc you would miss out on delicious food hidden in a strip mall! The hot tea was served immediately. The spring rolls and shrimp shumai were steaming hot and there was plenty of duck and ponzo sauce. I ordered yellow tail nigiri and the Angel roll. With virtually no frame of reference for upstate NY sushi restaurants I found Taka House to be quite adequate and reasonably priced for both nigiri, maki, and specialty rolls. I shared 2 maki, a special house roll, edamame, and a at least 6 orders of nigiri and my half of the bill ran only $30 pre-tip. That's the good part. The bad part? Whatever was going on that night with the act of table-clearing. Although there's a sushi bar I opted to dine at a table and was told to "sit anywhere you like". Eyeballing the room I saw at least 4 tables/booths strewn with dirty dishes, wadded up napkins, and the debris of diners who had come before me. None of these tables were cleaned as I dined and as other diners left none of their tables were cleaned off either. I left shaking my head and asking my friend what the hell was going on with that and she assured me that, as a somewhat regular diner, that's the first time she's seen it like that. I'll take her word on it but if I returned and walked in to see all those dirty tables a second time I'd do a u-ey. I don't know exactly what it says about a restaurant that can't or does't clear tables on a timely basis but I can't imagine it's a positive. Regardless of the table situation, I had no gripes with the food and would return again if in Webster. Meanwhile: Bus your tables, Taka House; nobody wants to look at that. read more

Tom yum soup was the worst ever, it seemed like they deglazed a wok, it was not the usual red/orange color instead it was a light muddy tan there were chunks of imitation crab, a few shrimp and what seemed like tuna. The rolls I ordered were ok, I went with yelper suggestions and I don't know why cause I don't love cream cheese in a roll like the orange salmon had or tempura shrimp like the mango had, they were ok. I know that I ordered soup but I think if you eat in you get soup and salad, most other places give it to you with take out too but not here. read more

Taka House is a Japanese restaurant tucked away in a Webster strip mall. Taka House is off the beaten path for me and I am not too famliar with the area, but the Yelp reviews piqued my interest. The ambience was pretty average. Nothing fancy, but that's not surprising based on its outward appearance. It's a smaller restaurant with maybe 10 tables in total. Everything was seemingly clean and tidy. Service was good. Our waitress was pleasant, prompt in taking our orders, refilling our drinks and even providing separate checks for our party of 7 without a fuss. I couldn't really ask for more. I found the food to be fairly pedestrian. I ordered the Chicken Habachi along with a Samurai Roll. Portion sizes were generous. The Chicken Habachi dinner was $14 and came with a salad, grill vegetables (zucchinis, onions) and rice. The good thing was that it tasted pretty healthy and was not too oily. However, tasting "healthy" also meant it was on the bland side. Usually hibachi restaurants have tasty but unhealthy sauces to help with this, be it a ginger or a mayonnaise based sauce. Unfortunately, Taka House has no such sauces available. Granted these sauces are not very Japanese, they have become staples in the American hibachi experience and not having them available was disappointing. The Samurai Roll was about $10 and consisted of spicy tuna and avocado topped with seared white tuna. The seared white tuna didn't do anything for me and seemed more like a tasteless filler. Maybe I just ordered the wrong roll, but my eating companions were also less than impressed with their dishes. A friend usually orders the chirashi bowl everytime she goes to a new Japanese restaurant and uses it as a basis for comparsion. She ranked Taka House below Shiki & Sushi King and thought the fish was less fresh. Overall, Taka House is an average sushi spot for me. The shining spot of the dinner was the service. Otherwise the food quality and value was just okay. I probably will not be back on my own accord, since there are better options closer to me. read more

Being a Japanese American from California, I had a craving for Japanese food after being in Webster fo work. Ordered side order if Shrimp Tempura and Vegetables, Kappa Maki, and Shrimp Tempura Roll. First of all, I didn't hear any Japanese spoken from the waitress and the Sushi chefs which was a warning. But I have to tell you, the Tempura was very good. Light, crispy and very good dipping sauce. The sushi was good although I thought the rice needed more seasoning The ingredients tasted fresh and I did enjoy my meal. I normally love this place - it's my "go to" sushi place. However, tonight my husband & I went for dinner, it was busy but we were able to get a table very quickly. It took a reasonable amount of time to get waited on. I ordered sushi, my husband ordered teriyaki. My sushi came out fairly quickly, but my husband didn't get served. We waited at least 15 minutes before anyone noticed my husband's order was missing. We were told they forgot to make it, so we waited and waited and waited, finally my husband said forget it, but it was done & they brought it out to him. He said the vegetables weren't cooked and most of the salmon tasted spoiled. While they apologized for the wait, they didn't do anything to compensate us for messing up hud order. I struggled a while as to whether to give Taka a 2 or 3 but finally decided on 3 stars. By definition, the restaurant really is "Meh - I've had better" but even though three stars is supposed to denote A-OK, a great misnomer by Yelp, it's a decidedly average restaurant so 3 out of 5 isn't in appropriate. The atmosphere is nothing special and the restaurant is small but it has a nice sense of intimacy. And then again, you can't say that many sushi places have much atmosphere. Only a few tables of six so do call well ahead if you're bringing in a party larger than 6. Tuna nigri was fresh, meaty. The King Crab lobster roll was very tasty. Just the right blend of ingredients. And the service was excellent, friendly and prompt with a smile (as other reviewers have commented on as well). Presentation is very plain, however. Two things counted against Taka. First, among the various rolls we had, the Spiderman roll (Fried soft shell crab, cucumber,avocado, masago, topped with tuna, salmon, shrimp, special sauce) was not fresh. Either the tuna or salmon (couldn't distinguish but I believe it was the salmon) was fishy - both to the taste and smell, an unforgivable offense. But there was another major flaw that led me to downgrade my rating for Taka. The rolls were not rolled properly. Not just one, but all of the rolls were prepared much too loosely. They were difficult to handle with chopsticks and fell apart when dipping in the soy/wasabi. That's the one thing a sushi restaurant should do and do well. I could roll these better at home and for that, they're lucky they didn't receive two stars. I most likely will go back but I may ask to review the fish before I order next time. The reviews here labeling Taka House the best fresh sushi in Rochester are far, far from accurate. Frankly, Umi in Victor, which I've been hard on before, serves much tastier combinations and in a much more elegant style. I enjoy looking at their plates so much more. For more utilitarian presentation but better tasting and much more properly rolled sushi, California Rollin still takes my vote. My advice to other reviewers, get out and sample other restaurants more before writing such highly superlative reviews. You can mislead others when it comes to choosing dining options. read more
