Spicy yellowtail sushi roll with avocado, serrano chili, and wasabi mayo.

We visit Next Door a few times a year, and every time we're reminded why it's one of the best dining experiences in Rochester. Honestly, we should go more often because everything -- the service, the atmosphere, the menu -- is consistently impeccable. The menu changes periodically, which means some favorites come and go, but they're always replaced by new standouts. On our latest visit, we enjoyed a leisurely dinner on the beautiful patio near the wood fireplace, and the experience was perfect from start to finish. The miso soup was unique and deeply flavorful, with shrimp, tofu, and luxurious shimeji mushrooms. The baby gem and watercress salad surprised us with its creamy wasabi-cucumber dressing and refreshing crunch -- unexpectedly delicious. The grilled zucchini, glazed with honey soy and tarragon miso, was fantastic, especially where it had a bit of char. The sushi rolls were all incredibly fresh and perfectly balanced -- from the spicy yellowtail with serrano chili to the tempura shrimp with toasted coconut, to the inventive veggie and red dragon rolls. And for dessert, we tried the Chocolate Sensation, which honestly deserves a better menu description -- the sobacha, hazelnut, miso milk jam, and white chocolate ice cream combination sounds unusual, but it was outstanding and should not be missed. Next Door remains at the top of our list for high-end dining in the Rochester area. If you haven't been, put it on your list -- it really can't be beat. We'll definitely be back again soon.

We were pleasantly surprised when we came back to dine at Next Door, and found that they had revamped their entire menu as well as the interior decor. I love the new gold accents, from table lamps, to wall paintings, to chairs, to plants and even their plates. Service was excellent as usual and the food was amazing. We started off with the tuna tartare which melts in your mouth. Paired with the rice chip, avocado and yuzu sauce, it was like eating a symphony in your mouth. Just like Remy in Ratatouille said, when you combine two things, new flavors are created. Next we're the seared salmon, seared, scallops and seared wagyu. When I say they melt in your mouth, I mean they MELT in your mouth. My favorite was the salmon, followed by the wagyu and then the scallops. Honestly they were so good. Then came the roasted eggplant and they had the coolest bamboo sticks that you use to consume in one bite. The crispy rice on top complemented the eggplant so well. A delight with every bite. Finally we ended our meal with the grass fed ribeye which was savory, flavorful, tender and grilled perfectly to medium-rare. I loved how we were able to order so much and share them between each other. We were full and very content with our meal. We love the new menu and cannot wait to come back and try more dishes!

I'm a frequent flyer of Next Door. A big reason is because we have a wine locker, so there isn't any corkage fee for us. The ambiance is upscale and It's a nice place to bring guests, especially out-of-towners They have renovated and changed their menu. Unfortunately, I like their old menu better. I used to always get the Bento box, which is no longer an option. There new food items are still good, but like others have mentioned a little on the pricier side. I am still a fan because the service at Next Door is top notch, even though you pay a premium for it. They also host wine pairing dinners (Merry Edwards, Moet, Roederer, Chateau Margaux, Chateau Lafite) that I enjoy attending. So yeah, maybe for the special occasion. The no corkage fee for having a wine locker is the biggest draw for me.

Next Door by Wegmans offers a valet service. I don't think it's necessary since it's the only restaurant there but sure. The doors open to 2 walls of Granny Smith apples, different. It is dimly lit and you can see into the wine storage areas. I made a reservation and our table was ready when we arrived. The waiter informed us they had recently remodeled and now the menu is meant for sharing. The first item we ordered was the tuna tartare, it was very refreshing and light. The crispy rice served as a voyager for the tuna tartare. I remembered from last time that the nigiri had wasabi underneath so I ordered it without it. Next up we ordered the nigiri; shrimp, scallop, salmon, and yellowtail. The shrimp was cooked, I was expecting sweet raw shrimp. I wouldn't paid have for cooked shrimp over rice if I knew that. The scallop was nice and sweet. The salmon, salmon roe, and yellowtail was okay. It's very expensive, 3 pieces for $18-$24! We ordered the Chilean sea bass with tomato curry broth to share, $46. It was good, pan seared served with salad. Our dining experience was okay, I've been here a few times but it is very overpriced. For being that expensive, I expect the best quality seafood.

Wow! I was in the area for work and a friend had suggested it and it blew me away! Great vibe and terrific service from the minute we walked in. The food --- 5***** Everything we had was cooked perfectly and loaded with flavor - the beef tenderloin with brioche mushroom crumble - outstanding! And don't miss out on the baked cheesecake for two with panko macadamia crumble, mango sorbet. Amazing!

    Tuna tataki....Excellent and way yummy

Some of the best food I have had in Rochester. We sat at the bar....Kit was amazing bartender friendly and made good suggestions . Large bar and drink selections, no TV's. It was bustling. I liked the decor but it might not be your thing. Lighiting is low.. .so bring your glasses. We kept it simple Tuna Tataki, the "watercress salad" and the shrimp tempura sushi roll . All were fresh and delicious. The Tuna Tataki dish was so.good....we ordered it twice! The sauce is so good I wanted to lick the plate. We will definitely go back.

Glad I got to try this place before I moved since we had been meaning to come for years and years. I would say we had a very good experience as we were able to reserve/somehow got counter seating in the back where all the magic (cooking) was happening. It was really entertaining to see all of the food being smoked, chopped, cooked, etc and felt kind of like an omakase experience. Prices are definitely hefty hear but it did feel like an upscale experience. We really went for anything we wanted and ended up getting some delicioius nigiri (including lean tuna, a scallop and seared scallop truffle and a salmon), eggplant lollipops, grillled fish, a steak and a chocolate dessert and a few rolls. The total was over $315 for the 4 of us but it felt well worth it. Everything was very nicely cooked and tasted great and it was a tasty dining experience. When you hear Wegman's and think of the grocery store, this is completely different. Worth coming here for a special celebration/treat.

Food was delicious, steak was medium rare and was cooked perfectly. It came with butter mushroom which was pretty tasty. Sushi rolls were okay. Chicken had a great flavor.

I wanted to say upfront that the Next Door bar and grill had a lovely vibe and a good happy hour; but the price of the food is just too high for what it is I always sit at the bar and the service is excellent - the bartender was super on top of things! The drinks were great but if it was Not the happy hour prices I wouldn't think it would be worth it I did like the hummus but the sushi itself was not that special for 19 bucks for 6 rolls The chicken appetizer was ok, but not spectacular Overall service is 5/5, food is 3-4/5, and prices are the biggest down side I still think you should give the drinks a chance for Happy hour

Over priced and not worth what you pay/the trouble/hype. We used to love this place. We don't like the recent changes to the menu, pricing, and decor. This isn't a "Next Door" or Grill menu. It's Asian fusion and I know better Japanese restaurants in the area. Now you pay for sides separately and prices have gone up. 15 bucks for half a sweet potato that wasn't good at all. $15 for a tiny lava cake with a thimble of icecream. Portioning on the miso soup is half what it used to be. The steak was good but price went up. Truffle fries and service are the only reasons to go back. The bill was $250 for me and my wife by the end. If you want cocktails and good truffle fries sure... beyond that if you want fine dining and ambiance I feel you should look somewhere else.

Bronzino fish... off the charts with flavor. Cooked to perfection / incredible
    Lauren N.

From the service to the food ... incredible! And we're a tough pair, my husband has a severe allergy , they paid close attention to it with everything , even avoiding cross contamination. Our server John was so knowledgeable and detailed when explaining things on the menu. Drinks superb . Everything top quality , from Food , ambience , the service , the drinks , everything... now we just need one in Florida . But this will be my Go to spot when we come up quarterly for work! Def a favorite !

They have a vegan menu that you must order a head of time and everyone at the table must eat from the vegan menu at $65.00 each...The chef prepares the meal which is up to his discretion as to what he'll serve...Tasty but a tad high end...

The ambience was that of a typical hibachi restaurant. We were sat almost instantly at a hibachi grill, with two other people. The staff were over pretty quickly, and took our drink orders. I would say, our hibachi chef wasn't the most extravagant. He did the usual things you would expect, but he wasn't very talkative, and didn't get us really engaged. The food was really good though. I got the hibachi steak and chicken with the vegetables and double fried rice. Getting double rice, gave a boatload of rice. Both the chicken and steak were cooked well, and had good flavor to them. I really liked the vegetables, because they weren't cooked too much, and still had a crunch to them. I also ordered a Philadelphia roll, which was presented really well, and tasted very fresh. Definitely will be coming back here in the future for dinner!

The space is cozy and inviting, with booths wrapped around the conveyor belt so you can immediately start eyeing the plates gliding by. The sushi on the belt was fresh and tasty, though we noticed the selection leaned a bit heavily toward spicy‑mayo‑based rolls. Everything we tried was delicious, but we would have loved to see a little more variety for those who prefer something less saucy. Thankfully, the touchscreen ordering system made it easy to branch out. You can order drinks and à la carte sushi directly from the screen, and your items arrive on a dedicated upper‑deck conveyor that zips your order straight to your table. It's a clever setup and really helps round out the meal with more options. Drinks were delivered by an adorable robot, which added a fun, whimsical touch. You are seated at a tablet in front of a conveyor belt with the sushi making it's way around the restaurant. You can take whatever catches your eye as it passes in front of you, or you can order from the tablet. If you order from the tablet, little cars bring the food on a second, higher conveyor belt above the first one, or sometimes a robot brings it to your seat. So there are 2 moving belts, robots, and servers. It's a lot! Fun, but be aware. It is cool that you can see things moving past and try different things. The plates on the belt are also less than a full order, which means you can try more things, if that's your style. Service is pretty quick since you're helping yourself from the belt. They do a good job making sure there is a variety of items on the belt and seemed to restock pretty quickly. You can mostly chose from rolls and nigiri. I do like American style rolls, and enjoyed the options. The guy prefers nigiri. We ordered some tempura and picked some nigiri from the menu as well. I really enjoyed the veggie tempura. They have good salmon - we tried the peppered salmon, which he thought was too much, but was smokey and peppery, and I enjoyed. There was also a spicy yellowtail, and plain salmon that was also nice quality. We shared an ice cream sundae with one of the little fish shaped cakes for dessert, which was really good. I liked the little cake with the red bean paste inside. It was fun and pretty low key.

Whether you choose all you can eat or not, you order off the regular menu, and they bring it out fresh to order for one set price. You can share with other people at your table, if they also order all you can eat. Which was another plus for me. It is also, what we decided to do. Our approach was to try a little at a time, so we could try as much as possible. We both ordered different things, with the intent on sharing. I ordered 2 sushi rolls. One I wanted and one my BF asked me to order. He is relatively new to Sushi. He ordered Beef Teriyaki, with steak, rice and Zucchini. My BF said he did not like Zucchini. But he loved everything about this dish. Real steak, the Zucchini was cut thick, so it had a nice crunch to it. The sauce was out of this world. Very different from Beef Teriyaki I've had at other Japanese restaurants. Lots of flavor, not salt. I really liked the Sushi rolls I ordered, but my BF ended up only trying 2, before he decided he wanted to move on to other things. Leaving me to finish the Sushi myself. Which filled me up pretty good. When I go back, I am not going to oblige him with that courtesy again. Haha! Next time I will order one roll, so Im not too full to try more menu items. It's quite the menu. If you do not like Sushi, no worries, they have a wide variety of hot dishes and appetizers. They have a food waste policy, which I thought was a huge plus. A lot of items on the menu are small plate foods, so it shouldn't be a problem. BF received his food first, there was a bit of a wait for the sushi, I heard a lot of people ordering a lot of Sushi upfront. Which probably backed it up a bit. But it was not a problem. I just helped BF eat his steak dish. lol. You do not have to order everything at once. Staff walks around checking on you keeping a close eye out. You can order more items off the menu as you go. The Ambiance was also very nice.Very comfortable, perfect for date, family, or friend nights out. They also had some whimsy, which is nice. Their Uniforms, have a Yoda saying on it. Which is definitely fun to note. The food was fresh, and delicious. A great way to upscale "all you can eat" I will definitely be back. Usually I cannot eat enough to make all you can eat worth it. But I would do it again here. Our bill was reasonable. But If I knew exactly what I wanted and it was less expensive than all you can eat. I would also order off the menu. This is my new favorite Sushi Restaurant. They do serve alcohol. Wine, beer, and sake. The beers are mostly Japanese beers. Staff were super friendly, happy, and helpful. They will walk you through the process. They have real menus, and also a QR code menu. The only improvement I would recommend, is that once they take your initial order. It would be nice to be able to use the QR code to order more items, instead of waiting on staff. I think it would work great with their food waste policy. But that's just a friendly suggestion. When I do reviews, I do take pics of the ladies room, if no one is in there. I think it should be normalized. Theirs was impeccable. The entire establishment was super clean.

There were about 10 people ahead of me on the waiting list, and the food quality remained delicious throughout the meal. The service was also keeping up with the demand. The sashimi was incredible. I can't say I don't like any sashimi, but I love them all. Almost every sushi and sashimi we ordered was delicious. However, there's one thing I don't care for: the sticky rice shumai/shu mai. We think it's lacking in flavor. Overall, we had a great time at this restaurant. The food was delicious, and the service was good. I do think there's room for improvement in the dessert menu.
