This place is slipping fast. Taj used to be one of my favorite places and especially loved the lunch buffet! The past several times I've been, the food quality just is not what it used to be. Not easy to explain but just not great anymore. A Cpl dishes were so salty it was almost shocking on the first bite. The most disappointing thing was that my younger sister visited from Vermont. She's a vegetarian and before she got here. I talked this place up pretty big. Unfortunately, when I took her there, the buffet was in very sad shape. You can tell the food had just been sitting out and wasn't particularly even warm. Looked dry on the edges and just tired looking. When I asked if they were bringing more food out because about 50% of the trays looked like they had about one scoop left in them, one of the guys motion to someone else to start bringing out some more food. I understand not wasting food, but this is at about 1:15 in the afternoon so really not that close to when they would normally clean the lunch buffet up. I don't know. The whole experience was just overall kind of sad. I was really hoping my sister would enjoy it by the less they are feeling like I need to apologize. The service was also pretty much nonexistent. We were barely greeted and sent down to find our own seat. Never offered anything to drink, and when I was walking to the buffet, I asked if someone could come take her drink orders about 10 minutes into a meal. Just didn't seem like anyone cared at all that we were there. I don't know if it's new ownership or management or what. Maybe they need to replace their chef. I hope it comes back to the quality that it once was though because I really want to still love taj! read more

This restaurant is like mom's home cooking. The staff are absolutely wonderful. They are attentive, and kind, and always make sure the buffet is stocked with fresh home made Indian dishes. My water class was never empty for long, and the ambience makes you feel like you've been personally invited to a luncheon or a dinner. I highly recommend! read more

I took my son to Taj Palace for his 13th birthday because we've enjoyed the lunch buffet in the past. This visit was nothing like what we've experienced before. We arrived at 1:00 and the buffet was in rough shape. About half of the food was out, most looked old, and the quality was far below what I expected. The chicken tikka masala was in a white sauce and didn't look right. The rice was cold and dry. There was no naan available. The whole setup looked like it had been sitting out too long, even though lunch is listed until 2:30. The server brought us a plate of naan when I asked, which was kind, but the buffet never improved. I ate one bite of the tikka masala. My son ate a few bites of chicken and some watermelon. We were there for fifteen minutes. When I asked if anything could be done on the bill since we barely ate, I was told no. I still paid the full $35 and tipped. This was supposed to be a special birthday lunch. Instead, it was a disappointing and expensive mistake. I hope the restaurant takes a serious look at their lunch service, because the quality today was unacceptable. We will not be returning. read more

I've been a customer for over 10 years. When Reedy and his wife stepped away things changed and I go much less because of it. The buffet is the same every day now and my water glass is usually unfilled and the staff walks right past me with a full pitcher. Today I saw another customer get their own refill. Ridiculous value for $21.95 you get your main curry with a huge pile of rice plus like 4 side things with a bunch of naan. Service is fast and extremely nice, so many smiles. My husband and I have lived for the street from Taj since they moved from downtown to the SE side. We ordered to go at least once a week for the last 2 years. One of our favorite spots in Bend. It makes me sad to say, something has changed. Whether it is a new chef or an attempt to save money, the quality of their food has gone down the last three times we've ordered to where we unfortunately no longer want to come back. The tikka masala is less flavorful, they've changed the breading on the chicken piccora. It's a shame. Taj, please return to the way it was! read more

My partner and I stopped in here while visiting Bend and we had a good time. I ordered the butter chicken and it was creamy, flavorful, and filling. Our server was very nice and made sure we had everything we needed. The restaurant was clean and comfortable, with minimal decorations. The bathroom was clean and easy to locate. There was a parking lot next to the restaurant and EV chargers in the Walmart parking lot next door, so we were able to charge the car while eating which was an added plus. read more

We are here first time in Bend and looked at Yelp reviews and visited this place. From the time we entered the restaurant till we left, it was such a pleasant experience. The owner (Mr. Reddy) is warm and welcoming and so is his staff. They treat you well, get you the best table available. We ordered spicy Indian tea followed by Navratna Korma and biryani. All veggies / curries come with both complimentary naan and rice. Everything is utterly delicious. Portion they serve is huge and I mean it. Their prices are low compared to quality and portion of food they serve. I was really impressed with everything they had to offer and will definitely recommend everyone visiting Bend to at least visit the place once. I too will be here for sure once I am back to Bend. This is such a gem to central Oregon. We don't have a lot of cultural variety of food here that is authentic-mostly a lot of fusion places, overpriced and lacking flavor. NOT TAJ PALACE. Been coming here for years-prior to their move to south Bend, they were downtown. I was scared when they moved locations because sometimes businesses go down hill or lose their flavor. but i am so happy it's stayed open and is just as delicious and wonderful as it was before. And now, better parking! The entire staff is wonderful, go above and beyond, and are warm and welcoming. The food is to die for. We've done the buffet a couple times but usually stick to the menu-we want garlic naan and samosas! The sauces that come with the samosas are so epic. I can never choose a favorite. Each bite I use a different sauce, on rotation, because they are all so good. We love you, Taj Palace! read more

The food was okay but lacked flavor. I ordered online so I'm wondering if I ordered in the restaurant, would I have been able to ask for different spice level? I definitely had the mild version. Honestly some of the best Indian food I've had and probably the BEST consistently delicious food in central Oregon. I tend to get mostly the same things every time I go; butter chicken, tikka masala, chicken Kurma, chicken 65(app) garlic nann and you CANNOT forget to get the mango lassi. I was not a tikka masala fan before this place, I just think I've never had good tikka masala before. The staff is so kind and fast always love coming here. This place is mine and my boyfriend's FAVORITE takeout/date night food. Love to snuggle up on the couch and rot after eating so much of this delicious food! read more

Food is delicious and authentic, offering a large menu with tons of authentic dishes that have descriptions in case you're unfamiliar with the food names. The staff is amazing, family owned and their own family recipes from India. They are so kind and all have big smiles all the time. The ambiance is great, they are offering a buffet on weekends too and they offer affordable prices for authentic Indian dishes... couldn't get better. I'll be back soon. read more

This review turns out to be close to a repeat of what I wrote for the now defunct Mantra restaurant. Solid Indian fare but not nearly as good as what you can get in other towns (outside Central Oregon). - Samosas are very good. Nicely fried without being greasy. - Saag paneer is decent although the serving was a bit small. - Chicken vindaloo is also good but not remarkable. I expected more body and spiciness. - Chicken tikka is dry and bland. I think I'll use the leftovers to make another dish. - Vegetable koorma, OK. - Sambar maybe better than OK. - Garlic naan is decent, but not the best I've had by any means. You don't get much with an order.  We did get a lot of regular naan with our entrees but it was fairly bland. - None of the entrees had any kick whatsoever. I think the proprietors are used to serving patrons who can't tolerate spicy food. Prices are about in line with what you expect in Bend. You'll be charged a delivery fee, a 'state mandate' fee and a non-cash transaction fee if you use a credit card. All that came to about $13 for this order, which doesn't include gratuity. I don't mind paying a little extra to help restaurants survive the pandemic. All in all, A-OK but not more than that. Mantra was superior. Taj Palace also doesn't open their kitchen until 5 PM so if you're looking for an early dinner, you'll need to go elsewhere. read more

We were hopeful for an ethnic meal in Bend that wasn't a burger or pizza. I think there is potential here, as some things were tasty (riata, dal curry, vegetable curry, chutneys)... however we were disappointed with the chicken tikka masala (seriously, it was yellow in color). The lamb kirai was okay, but blander than I was hoping. The vegetable pakoras were a bit tasteless and heavy. Is there a way to order the entrees that are more authentic, rather than a diluted Bend version? Is there a secret password? If so... let me know and I'm willing to give it another try. Otherwise, I think we will avoid ordering Indian food when we are in Bend. read more

2 stars for effort. Takeout: We did takeout three times before they moved to their new location and each time, we were disappointed. The Indian food certain does not taste like the Indian food we've had everywhere else. You have a watery, flavorless curry sauce for entrees like chicken tikka masala, and everything is overpriced for the quality you get. Being the only Indian restaurant for the longest time, it was the only choice but also maybe those from here haven't had the opportunity to taste actual, delicious Indian food. Indian food is my ultimate favorite kind of food, and is my comfort.. I'm sad that I can't even rely on this restaurant (or the only other one in town). I recently learned how to make butter chicken from scratch so now I'm going to experiment and be happy I won't have to pay to go here again. Buffet: We visited the new location and did the buffet lunch about two weeks ago. It was thoroughly disappointing for $15.95/person. My daughter is usually crazy about Indian food but she hardly touched her food. There are frozen TV dinner type meals with better tasting Indian food, especially at Trader Joe's. Tried this place while on a work function in Bend. I had the chicken saag, and it was a bit different than the saags I've had in the past. This one is a bit more creamier than others, and it tasted pretty good, but like I said, just not the best I've had. I'd give it probably a B/B+. I also tried the chicken biryani, and again, this was good, but there was just something missing about it that I can't put my finger on. I'd probably give this around a B+ as well. The naan wasn't too great - it was overcooked so that it was burnt and very dry. Almost had like a cracker consistency instead of bread. But yea, I would probably come back here again if I'm ever in Bend, but I think I'd try other dishes to see how they compare with other places I've had. read more
