Their food is superb, particularly the cheese naan. I have traveled the country looking for comparable cheese naan, and have not found any.

Was craving indian food and was so excited for my food however I did find the food was very bland and nothing special. Ordered the butter chicken and naan. Chicken was really dry. My favorite thing about indian food is it's usually very flavorful and has lots of spices but I felt like it lacked a lot.Disappointed :( read more

The Ambience was soft and romantic, lighting was dim, music was at a moderate level, and the restaurant was clean. The service was fantastic. Our waitress checked on us often and explained the dishes with sufficient detail. The food was amazing! This was my first time trying Spinach Dal Curry and Tofu Mutter! I'm a sucker for the spiced tomato sauce and will definitely be ordering this one again. We all enjoyed the naan which was the perfect cut, density and temperature to accompany our entrée! Tried to get a seat at Ken's Artisan pizza tonight but the wait was too long so we walked down to the newly opened Spiceland, an Indian restaurant in the downtown Bend space formerly occupied by Chomp Chomp and La Magie before that. High marks. Food was very good, service was top tier and the space is nicely appointed (not much change from Chomp Chomp). They're still getting their feet under them but off to a promising start. read more

Review of Spiceland Indian Restaurant (Lunch for Four) I visited Spiceland Indian Restaurant with three friends for lunch. The staff were polite, the space was clean, and we were seated quickly. Our table was slightly unkept at first but was promptly tidied, and water service arrived right away. Once everyone joined, orders were taken without delay. A few issues did stand out. One friend had to change his order because the restaurant was out of his first choice. While some dishes came out hot and steaming, my chicken vindaloo was barely lukewarm, and the rice served was similar, not very warm and a tad clumpy. The bigger letdown was flavor: vindaloo is typically a boldly spiced dish, but mine was surprisingly bland. Overall reactions around the table were mixed, with most of us finding the food average. The exception was the garlic naan, which was light and airy and with just the right touch of garlic. Considering the all-around experience and that this was lunch, with my à la carte chicken vindaloo (served with rice or naan) listed at $18.95, it seemed overpriced.. Ha, luckily, one of my friends picked up the check. In the end, good company made the lunch enjoyable, but the food ir ambiance itself didn't leave much of an impression. Enjoyable! Water: off taste, reminds me of the water from a water gun. I wasn't able to drink the water. Mango lassi: not as sour am I used to but it was yummy. I wish it was served with ice. Raita: I've never liked raita. But I love it here. Fresh, salty creamy Butter chicken: it was as expected, it was great! Tandoori chicken: beautiful color, great flavor, amazing sizzle. We got medium spice, it has a kick, I want to order the hot next time! The flavors were rich and authentic, and the service was warm and welcoming. Highly recommend the butter chicken. read more

The food was excellent: Aloo Mutter (peas and potato curry), chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb curry which was especially delicious. The naan was excellent although we ordered two servings when one was enough for three people. The lighting is a little harsh. It gives you the feeling of a very bright diner instead of a fine dining restaurant. Tone it down a little! Otherwise everything was excellent. read more

The rawa masala dosa was so good! I especially liked the tomato chutney that came with it. Another exciting thing to note is that their naan is vegan, and they use vegan butter. I wouldn't have guessed, and only found out because my friend asked for me. Coconut tofu curry was very rich and decadent. Eggplant curry was heavy on tomatoes which is not how I like my eggplant, but the texture was fine. I'll definitely be back for the dosa, and look forward to trying more of their veggie curries next time. Great service, nice flavors, and an overall good addition to downtown dining. read more

Cheap beer. Great atmosphere. Food was also good. I'm new to the curry scene. My beef curry had tons of bones. To the extent that I believe they're supposed to be in there. Even so, does there have to be that many bones? More bone picking than chewing. Really tasty. I just didn't want a chore while I ate. Don't waste your time, it was awful. I can't speak to the ambience because we had it delivered. We had samosa chaat, which seemed to be missing the samosa. The flavor was decent, but not great. The paneer butter masala was awful! The paneer was brown, the rice cold and clumpy, and the sauce was terrible. No spice, and we ordered it medium, and let a horrid aftertaste. We couldn't get through it. The naan was soggy and burnt...not a great combination. We will stick with our usual...The Real Taste of India! read more

I wanted to like this place. We just moved to the area and have been looking for a good Indian restaurant so we decided to try this place vs a truck because the weather was so hot and hoped to cool down once inside.. When we entered, the place was stifling hot. I got used to it and didn't mind it too much. We waited for about five minutes and someone came and showed us in the direction of a table. We were not given menus or anything, just told to "sit here". We did. The waitress serviced three tables around us. She never came to us. The (probable manager) came to chat with people at other tables near us, but not us. I tried to get the waitress attention several times yet she never seemed to notice, despite looking at us several times and seeing me wave at her. The men sitting next to us noticed how long we had been waiting and that no one was approaching us. I knew they were a bit busy so continued to wait politely, hoping the manager would come ask us how we are etc as we seen him do to other tables. Nope. All in all we waited 17 minutes. Maybe that's not a lot of time for some but to us it was given the temp that day was around 90, there was no AC, and we were not even offered water. We got the feeling that they didn't want to serve us for whatever reason and then left. read more

We tried them tonight. We were fairly impressed with the service, and the venue, and the food was quite good. My wife had the lamb shank and I had goat curry. We shared the onion pakora with chickpea coating appetizer, and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our only complaint, and a very minor one, was the lack of a knife at the table to separate the meat from the numerous, sharp, small bones. Salt at the table would have been convenient as well. All in all, well worth the trip! We'll be back! read more

Some of the worst Indian food I've ever had. The vegetable pakora was all onion except for the potatoes that were cold in the middle. The chicken korma and chana masala were just totally wrong (not what those dishes are supposed to be) and oddly spiced. The korma was all clove and the chana masala was tomato based. I had very high hopes that Bend finally got some good Indian food but Just like every other Indian restaurant here, I left feeling sick, disappointed in the quality, and didn't care to take leftovers. I normally give a place the benefit of the doubt and try it a few times before swearing it off but one visit was all I needed here. Not worth going back. The service was mediocre, I think the heart was there but experience was not. The ambiance here was nice. Big full bar, but they couldn't make us a drink. My caveat is I've spent time in India, I've eaten at restaurants all across the American west, and you come to tell very easily the difference between quality food and these sub par restaurants that just care about making money, not feeling people healthy delicious food. read more

The food tasted incredible when my wife and I ordered take out shortly after this location opened. We ordered two separate dishes, with two different types of meat/sauce. Sadly, the pleasant tastes were followed by the explosive...problems that arose shortly thereafter and seemed to last for days. I have finally rehydrated my body sufficiently to leave this review. This place was phenomenal!!! What an amazing treat to find real South Indian food and in eastern Oregon was completely unexpected ! I lived in south India and I have extremely high standards and it lived up to my hopes. The sambar was likely the best I've ever had. We also ordered the biryani bc the chefs are Hyderabadi and it was very good. Perfect spice level too. The rice pudding was also insanely good too and I usually don't even like it that much. The restaurant was also beautiful and the chefs were all super smiley and sweet. I love that you could see the kitchen which looked very clean. One of the owners (Craig) served us and he was really warm and friendly, he clearly had a lot of pride in his business and the authenticity of the food and he was also very proud of Bend. We had an amazing dining experience! Thank you!! My only critique is that I wish the dosa was more crispy on the edges, and I would have loved if the thali included a small side of pickled mango. read more

After walking in, there was so much spice/pepper in the air from a sizzling entree, that all 4 of us started coughing, as well as the greeter. We considered leaving but so glad we stayed. This is a terrific restaurant, and a great new addition to the downtown Bend scene. We sat at the bar, and were warmly welcome by Craig, one of the owners. We enjoyed a few draft beers while we perused the large menu. We ordered lamb samosas, and Tandoori chicken Thali (with rice, Naan and dipping sauce). It was plenty of food for two. The food arrived promptly and perfectly cooked. Craig spent time with us, telling us about his vision for the restaurant. The ambiance was clean and non-fussy. We had several beers, and the bill was just over $60 total. As for the less than positive reviews for Spiceland, I encourage folks to let the staff work out any kinks before blasting reviews. This is a new restaurant trying to bring affordable, diverse ethnic food in a challenging economic environment. Frankly, given the reasonable price point, I think it's a steal.
