I have been going there for more than 15 years, and recently I have reached a point of certainty that I will not go back. Prices have risen to where it's not as good value. Food quality has gone down. Depending on the server, portions are small. Time before last, I asked for 3 cup chicken and got all bones. My daughter's favorite:fried chicken strips were on the back counter - they never offered it up when it was my turn to choose. The meat ball, "Lion Head", is so bland. Soup has become so diluted. It used to have more veggies, even seaweed. The male owner is stingy and stern, like I am bothering him, because my Chinese is limited. You can take advantage of the deal for dine-in or take-out. If you're in the mood for potstickers, they're pretty good too. I have been coming here since the early/mid 2000s, so here are some pro-tips I've learned over the years to make your TC experience a success: 1. Go early or don't go at all. The entrees sit there cafeteria style once they're done, and though new entrees get cooked throughout the day, they get cold pretty fast. Go during prime lunch time, ideally before 1 pm, to get the freshest food. 2. Add pearl milk tea for only $1.50 -- it's not the best, but great for the price. Taiwan Cafe is one of those places I grew up eating at because my family lived so close, so it holds a lot of sentimental value for me. The milk tea isn't the greatest here (fairly watered down and the boba is nothing to write home about), but every time I come I get the strawberry slushie with my meal because it's what I've eaten since I was a little girl. Best value meal here is obviously the two scoops of rice + three dishes combo. When available I always get the eggplant, the chicken with mushrooms and edamame, and the green beans. Beef with broccoli, kung pao chicken, and curry chicken are also good. Perfect comfort food. When I'm not feeling like the combo, though, I've always had a soft spot for the shrimp fried rice. On the weekends they do a Taiwanese breakfast/brunch in the mornings, with you tiao (fried dough), soy milk, and various other pastries. The Chinese buns here are excellent. The ladies behind the counter always greet me in Chinese and are quick and efficient with my orders. Prices have risen a little this past year, which was somewhat disappointing that last time I visited, but business owners gotta do what they can in this economy. When I got to the restaurant I was a little disappointed as it looked like a run down cafeteria, but I have learned to never judge a place by its looks. Me and my friends got two hot al la carte plates and I ordered a beef noodle soup. The al la carte food was luke warm so it wasn't appetizing whatsoever. It felt like the food was on a hot plate all day, and just served as is. Such a shame because the taste of the food was quite good. With the beef noodle soup it was bland, that really felt like they boiled some canes beef broth, threw in cooked noodles and called it soup. Today despite the pandemic and rising food prices they're still selling $8 plate lunches with the same deal which is insane! Cash only though so come prepared. Takeout costs a bit more and don't come with soup. I got the mapo tofu, kung pao chicken, and spicy fish. They give you a ton of rice so to avoid waste and extra calories I'll be asking for just one scoop. The kung pao chicken was a bit sweeter and soggier than I remembered. If you know me, you know I eat A TON. This was definitely 2 meals worth of food. For an extra $1.50, you can get a milk tea+boba also. I'm kind of torn about this place - I like the hole-in-the-wall feeling. It has everything that a poor college student would love, cheap, fast, filling, and pretty tasty offerings. I came for dinner with a friend and we both agreed the food was good, albeit cold. I'm not sure when the best time to come for hot food is. Maybe for lunch? I sample a few items, the green beans, kung pao chicken, and eggplant. I actually really loved the fish my friend got. It was spicy but really flavorful. I also really liked the kung pao chicken, it wasn't heavily breaded, which I find distasteful at many fast food Chinese places. The green beans were not super crisp or fresh but they were well flavored. The rice was also cold. So, even though I liked the way everything tasted, all I remember is the lukewarm food. As for the atmosphere, the tables are cleared away but there is a layer of grime on most things. I know a lot of people say this reminds them of home but for me, home cooking is warm and inviting and I found the restaurant food and staff to be cold. I also appreciate that it is very, very cheap for the quantity of food you get. So, if I lived near Taiwan Cafe and broke, I would definitely opt to eat here instead of McDonalds. But, it is a 30 minute drive for me so I don't think I will be back anytime soon. read more

I have been coming here for about 10 years and I have nothing but good things to say. They have good classic Taiwanese breakfast dishes such as green onion pancake, soy bean milk, and pourrage. The main winner though is the lunch and dinner options. When you enter into the R Restaurant you are greeted with displays of food that you get to choose from. You can choose to have three main dishes and rice or just two main dishes (more meat). Just the amount of pure variety of choices that you get to pick nay be overwhelming at first, but you will find your favorites soon enough. The meal comes with soup (usually a vegetable egg drop soup) and bubble tea if you want. The sweetest part of this deal is that it only cost around $7, $7 for 3 dishes, rice, bubble tea, and soup is really a great deal. It has been keeping me coming back here for years (that and the consistency of the food). They also have traditional Taiwanese shaved ice but they rarely make my favorite topping any more which was glutinous rice balls. (It was the only place in the Dallas area that I could find that had shaved ice and glutinous rice balls, although big bowl shaved ice use to but they stopped making them also, they only have the store bought kind). This place is in a nondescript strip mall and has a decent sized dining space, on two distinct halves of the restaurant. You order at the counter either through their menu or the cafeteria style food they have in the trays. For $7, you get so much! They offerings are diverse and from there, get ready for the grease! We got the beef, lamb, and chicken from the trays and ordered some dumplings and scallion pancakes off the menu. All of it was super greasy and even got so much food. Each portion is huge. This has been a family owned, local Chinese restaurant in the area for ages. They're known for a panda express method of choosing food, but the catch is they have authentic Chinese food! On weekends, they even have steamed buns and more options to order from. ( You can also order from menu on wall anytime ) I usually eat here every other week due to its cheap price and consistency, and it's not bad. The food itself tastes pretty good, but the downside is it's unhealthy. Most of their dishes have a lot of oil so be careful if you track calories and such. They have a variety of options, but I enjoy weekends because they have Bao Zi. The service is extremely fast except for sometimes on weekends because it's a Hot place to eat lunch.
