Friendly chef grilling up fresh meat.
Cecil W.

Note: Unfortunately, my first visit, I did not ask their hours, I will try to do so next visit. Driving by one night and see a brand new taco truck joint near my home! Smelled good on the way up, had to go back for something! Located on the corner of E. Washington and N Altadena, right in front of 7-Eleven. Parking is that same plaza. These guys are here 3 times a week, not sure exactly which days, there was a language barrier. On approach, 4 guys were very friendly, though they spoke only a little English, it was enough to make it through! They sell tacos, quesadillas, mulitas, burritos, and tacoquesos. They don't have a menu... so we didn't ask each specific price but overall seemed very fair if not great! For meats, they offered al pastor, carne asada, and tripe, though, I might've missed it if they offered more. They also offer grilled onions on request. Watching the chef grill the meat was mouth-watering! Each meat looked so tender and smelled delicious! We ordered 6 al pastor tacos, 6 carne asada tacos, 1 al pastor quesadilla, 2 al pastor burritos and 1 pineapple juice. The tacos tortillas are freshly made, they literally shape and cut it fresh to be grilled! The burritos near completion, will be offered to you to add toppings such as salsa, onions and cilantro, etc. The pina wasn't mine, but i heard it was very good as well! Salsa and condiment bar is self-serve. They offered green salsa, avocado salsa, radish, cucumbers, onions, and cilantro. Total was $56 flat, so I guess you can do the math on that. Each item was very tasty! Specifically the al pastor was amazing, flavorful, juicy, and tender! The carne asada was also very good, albeit a little salty, so pair it with the cucumber or radish! Condiments were very fresh and since it was self-serve, we were not skimped. The quesadilla was great as well, very cheesy and meaty. Overall, the experience was top-notch, customer service was great, food was great, location/parking was easy and convenient, and pricing was great also. Note to self and others, bring gloves to eat or utensils, because the al pastor is messy! I am so grateful a GOOD taco truck opened up nearby and will definitely return!

Tasty street food. They have an assortment of proteins and lots of condiments. Quick, delicious, Southern California comfort food. I ordered a burrito with al pastor meat, melted cheese, rice, beans, avocado salsa, tomatoes, cilantro, lime. We also had the quesadillas and carne asada tacos. Meats were very well marinated.

The only complaints were the fries totally lacked flavor and I guess they were out of cheesecake and I wasn't even offered a replacement option, just given rice pudding. It was ok, I don't mind it but the cheesecake was part of my choice in ordering from here and I would've done the churros next if I was offered a choice. The fries were just there. They were beyond bland and idk maybe that's the intent when the sando packs such a punch. I dipped a couple in consommé before deciding they were just extra carbs and I wasn't feeling it. I did get a giant onion skin that first bite of sando as well. The salsas were a little too much for my weak palate. But the taco and sando! Outta this world! Both meats were tender, and delicious. I would absolutely order both again, the consommé is the perfect sidekick to both. Still bummed about the cheesecake. The idea of it sounds amazing. But delicious foods nonetheless.

If I see "salsa" I'm thinking house salsa. Let's be specific~ Speaking of salsa, I ordered salsa verde and got something more like salsa amarillo? It's the blandest salsa ever. I could get more out of a sauce packet tbh. I don't know if the water down their salsas maybe? Of the (probably) many watered down items served here, this horchata has at least 3x more water than flavor. Also don't know how you can water down the flavor of meat but add that to the list too. I will say texture on the meat is good like I know it's not over or undercooked, but I taste next to nothing. Also received the most solid as a rock limes ever. Confused how that even came to be. This place is full of shiny gimmicks with no substance. If you're looking for good mexican food look elsewhere. It's southern california, you've got options.

The food was delicious and the prices can't be beat. My personal favorite were the aguachiles, they were perfection! We also ordered two shrimp tacos and surf and turf burritos and neither disappointed. There seemed to be only one person working so kudos to the chef as the food came out fairly quick but you could taste the freshness. When we went it was empty but a few people had pick up orders. The restaurant looked clean and well maintained. I can't wait to come back as those aguachiles are still on my mind.

When I came in it was near closing time and there was no one sitting inside. I think they were closing up, but I had enough time to order something to go. I ended up ordering two fish tacos. It was neatly packaged and plenty of toppings, along with some salsa on the side. When I finally got around to eating the tacos, it was very tasty and there was a nice crisp to the Ensenada style tacos. I definitely cheer for places like this, and I tend to score a little higher only because I feel like there needs to be more places like this around. Not only that, but they have a pretty extensive menu, but I really just came here specifically for the fish tacos on this visit.

My coworker and I went all in on the birria lineup, because the whole office was talking about birria so we grabbed the Birria Papas (w added guacamole) and Birria Tacos. The papas came out swinging: legit hand-cut fries piled high like they had something to prove. Messy, loaded, and worth every napkin. The tacos were a little on the petite side, like "did I accidentally order the sample version?" but still tasty enough to keep me from complaining too loudly. Now let's talk about the secret hot sauce. First of all, why is it secret?!?!? 2nd of all, I get it. That stuff is not playing around. One bite and my mouth was on fire!!! If you like heat that punches back, this is your moment!! The spot itself is super clean, the staff is genuinely nice (not the fake "have a nice day" nice), and everything just felt easy and welcoming. Prices won't make your wallet cry either, which is always a bonus, esp how expensive everything is these days!! Only downside, the parking is a bit of a game of luck. We got there early and snagged a spot, but otherwise, you might want to park across the street and pretend it was your plan all along. Overall: great food, spicy surprises, and zero regrets!!! Would absolutely go back. Make sure to ask for the "secret hot sauce" you won't regret it!!!

Alright, so I gotta say food is pretty darn good. Just few things I can say that need improvement…read morebut all in all great flavors and service. Lots of seating, lots of parking( lot in the back). From the design and thought put into the decor, menu and all the other options (like candy, liquor, beer and wine) you get, it's pretty amazing. We ordered a plethora of items to see what would be our favorite. I gotta say it was pretty much everything. Super polite staff and the flavors of the food made you feel good. You're truly in for a treat. Asada burrito super bomb, great flavor decent size and for the price it's great. See I like to eat(like you!) so I wouldn't have minded if it was tad bit bigger and tad bit heavier. But flavor was super delicious. Crunchy potato tacos, like finger food, once I saw someone else's tacos I was like uh oh I'm gonna need a lot more tacos. Except we stuck to ordering a few items to just see how it goes. And yeah, like I said tacos are SMALL. Like baby size. Not normal if you ask me but to each their own I guess. Birria cup lacked meat, but the flavor was amazing, you get 3 baby sized corn tortillas and that's pretty much it. You would expect more meat but after looking at the taco sizes yeah. You ain't getting anymore! So order more! Asada fries as well, portion wise could have been more giving. Loved the house made fries, great touch. Or atleast I am assuming they are house made, tasted very fresh cut if you know what I mean. Except the portion is tiny, like everything else. So if anyone is understanding my lingo is that Madre Maiz doesn't really put out large portions, which makes you want to order more and spend more. Then again they have their flavor to compensate for the quantity? Last can't leave out the guacamole, fresh and delicious with the bag of chips. Now that food portion has been expressed, let's talk about the meat being slightly on the dryer side. Soft but definitely dryer than majority of the taquerias I have been too. The asada 100% was dry and lacked any form of juiciness. Flavor was there but just dry. 100% needed sauce. The red sauce was chipotle based, the orange was habanero, and the green was cilantro/maybe avocado based(no heat in the green). Every bit of sauce helped every bite. Was it worth trying and reviewing? Yes. Will I ever go back? 100% cause that burrito was pretty good. For 12-13 bucks it's not bad at all, might need two. Beautiful decor, and plenty of seating outside and limited on the inside.

We sat inside since we had a sleeping baby in a stroller, and was surprised to find there are a few others doing the same with a stroller also! Plenty of space for all of us too. Between the 3 adults, we had ordered 2 main dishes and 1 ceviche to share. It was the perfect amount of food and I'm glad we weren't overzealous and ordered 3 mains as it would've been too much. We got a mole enchilada, ceviche tropical, and the carnitas chilaquiles. everything tasted amazing and it was the perfect dish to introduce my parents to the unique mole flavor. staff members were very friendly and super accommodating, glad we ventured out to Mercado!

On a positive note, the restaurant itself was quiet and not very crowded, although there seemed to be a steady flow of to-go orders. The service was fast and friendly, which I appreciated.
